Sophie Ibbotson

January 16, 2019

Some 25 years after the genocide that killed a million people, Sophie Ibbotson discovers an East African nation very much on the up.

What’s the first word which comes to mind when you hear “Rwanda”? No, you don’t need to say it; almost everyone thinks of the same thing. The Rwandan genocide is an inescapable bloodstain on modern history, countless individual tragedies rolled into one unfathomable horror. The names of those who died are written on the wall of the Kigali Genocide Memorial where a quarter of a million Rwandans are buried in its now peaceful grounds.

But
25 years on, Rwanda isn’t the same country it was in 1994. For one thing, over 60
per cent of the population has been born since
the genocide; their only memories are of what has happened after it. And
Rwanda’s most recent period has been a remarkable one. Nowhere else have
justice and reconciliation programmes been undertaken on such a scale, and
while it can never heal all wounds, Rwandans from every community have been
working together to construct a new, more unified national identity.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

  • Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sparked outrage with his positive Tweets about his recent trip to Myanmar.
  • Social media platforms — including Facebook and Twitter — may have worsened a humanitarian crisis there.
  • Twitter users are responding criticizing Dorsey’s posts for being “tone-deaf.”

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently visited Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar, for his birthday, to participate in a 10-day Vipassana silent meditation retreat. Since then, he’s been posting photos and detailed descriptions of his trip on Twitter, encouraging other people to go there if they can.

Now, Dorsey is facing backlash against his supposedly ignorant promotion of Myanmar, where social media platforms — including Twitter and Facebook — allegedly helped fuel a mass genocide, SFGate and other outlets reported.

Twitter’s Jack Dorsey promotes Myanmar despite genocide reports https://briefnews.eu/twitters-jack-dorsey-promotes-myanmar-despite-genocide-reports/ https://briefnews.eu/twitters-jack-dorsey-promotes-myanmar-despite-genocide-reports/#respond Sun, 09 Dec 2018 22:24:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twitters-jack-dorsey-promotes-myanmar-despite-genocide-reports/

Unfortunately, social network leaders still appear to be tone deaf regarding Myanmar’s reported atrocities. Twitter chief Jack Dorsey posted a series of tweets encouraging followers to visit Myanmar after he’d been there for a birthday meditation retreat, seemingly ignoring widespread evidence of the country’s government committing genocide against the Rohingya people and forcing hundreds of thousands of them to flee. He focused solely on his trip, noting that the “people are full of joy” and celebrating the experience of listening to a Kendrick Lamar album after breaking silence.

As the New York Times‘ Liam Stack noted, the issue isn’t just that Dorsey completely sidestepped the Myanmar government’s actions — it’s that he did so despite social networking (mainly Facebook) playing an instrumental role in fostering massacres and other crimes.

We’ve asked Twitter for comment. However, it’s reasonable to presume that Dorsey’s Myanmar endorsement won’t help Twitter persuade the public that it’s responsive to complaints. People have already accused the company of being reluctant to remove some of its most toxic users, and now its CEO appears to have glossed over a government’s horrific acts while touting his own journey of self-discovery.

Israeli lawmakers vote against recognizing ISIS’ anti-Yazidi cleansing as genocide https://briefnews.eu/israeli-lawmakers-vote-against-recognizing-isis-anti-yazidi-cleansing-as-genocide/ https://briefnews.eu/israeli-lawmakers-vote-against-recognizing-isis-anti-yazidi-cleansing-as-genocide/#respond Thu, 22 Nov 2018 03:51:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/israeli-lawmakers-vote-against-recognizing-isis-anti-yazidi-cleansing-as-genocide/ Israeli MPs have refused to recognize the suffering of the Yazidi minority living under Islamic State as a genocide. Up to 5,000 have been killed and over 3,000, mostly women and children, taken captive and enslaved.

On Wednesday, the Israeli parliament voted down a draft bill that would have formally recognized the atrocities of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) against the Yazidi people as a genocide.

The proposed legislation was rejected by 58 parliamentarians, including the members from the ruling right-wing coalition led by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Thirty-eight votes in support of the bill were not enough to tip the balance.

The ruling coalition holds 61 of the 120 seats, with Netanyahu’s party Likud controlling the biggest share, 30 seats.

The sponsor of the bill, Zionist Union MP Ksenia Svetlova, called the vote “shameful.” She also dismissed the coalition’s argument that the UN has not formally designated the well-documented massacre of Yazidis as genocide as “ridiculous,” according to I24 news.

While the UN has not formally labelled the suffering of thousands of the 700,000-strong Yazidi population living under IS rule as a “genocide” either, a UN-mandated inquiry endorsed the notion to do so last year.

Marking the third anniversary of the attack on the Yazidi community on Mount Sinjar in northern Iraq on 3 August, 2014, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic published a report, calling on the international community to “recognize the crime of genocide being committed by ISIL against the Yazidis and to undertake steps to refer the situation to justice.”

The report noted that some 3,000 women and girls are still being held by IS who forces them to endure rape and beatings. Many girls, some as young as 10, have been sold at slave markets as terrorists viewed Yazidis as “non-believers” and thus, property. Thousands of fighting-age men have been slaughtered, while boys were forced to convert to Islam and sent to their deaths. According to various estimates, between 3,000 and 5,000 Yazidi men have perished while as many as 10,000 may have been enslaved.

Voicing her dismay with Israeli lawmakers’ decision, Svetlova tweeted that the MPs “voted in hypocrisy and nationalist egoism,” arguing that there was no other explanation for the government’s stance.

Apparently, some MPs wanted to side with Svetlova but were forced to vote along party lines. Likud MP Yehuda Glick, himself an Orthodox Jew, said that he was “ashamed” by his own vote but that he “had no choice” other than to follow his party’s instructions.

Some 85 percent of the Yazidi population is believed to have been displaced by the wars wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria. Some have sought asylum in Europe. However, not everyone has found safe haven there; one Yazidi teenager recently told RT about her encounter with her IS rapist-turned refugee in Germany.

So far, only Armenia has officially recognized the genocide of the Yazidis. In January, its parliament passed a resolution condemning the massacre and called for the perpetrators to be held responsible. Armenia houses some 50,000 Yazidis, making them Armenia’s largest ethnic minority.

UN investigators says Myanmar military chiefs should be prosecuted for genocide https://briefnews.eu/un-investigators-says-myanmar-military-chiefs-should-be-prosecuted-for-genocide/ https://briefnews.eu/un-investigators-says-myanmar-military-chiefs-should-be-prosecuted-for-genocide/#respond Mon, 27 Aug 2018 08:45:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/un-investigators-says-myanmar-military-chiefs-should-be-prosecuted-for-genocide/

Top Myanmar military leaders should be prosecuted for genocide against Rohingya Muslims, investigators working for the UN’s top human rights body said on Monday. The call, accompanying a first report by the investigators, amounts to some of the strongest language yet from UN officials. They have denounced alleged human rights violations in Myanmar since a crackdown began last August. The three-member “fact-finding mission” working under a mandate from the UN-backed Human Rights Council assembled hundreds of accounts by expatriate Rohingya, satellite footage and other information, AP said. The UN-backed Human Rights Council created the mission six months before a rebel attack on security posts set off the crackdown that drove hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fleeing to neighboring Bangladesh.

‘You sign off on genocide’: Protesters attack Haley over Palestine (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/you-sign-off-on-genocide-protesters-attack-haley-over-palestine-video/ https://briefnews.eu/you-sign-off-on-genocide-protesters-attack-haley-over-palestine-video/#respond Wed, 23 May 2018 23:13:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-sign-off-on-genocide-protesters-attack-haley-over-palestine-video/

UN Ambassador Nikki Haley received the wrong kind of welcome at the University of Houston when she was met with chants accusing her of having blood on her hands and of signing off on genocide in her support for Israel.

Haley was mere moments into her speech at the university on Tuesday and had just referred to the “very busy few weeks in American foreign policy” when she was interrupted by a protester shouting, “Nikki Haley, the blood is on your hands.”

“Oh jeez,” a visibly nervous Haley said as the protester continued to shout, “you continue to sign off on the genocide of a native people” to loud applause and booing.

“Nikki, Nikki can’t you see, you are on a killing spree!” a number of protesters shouted. “Haley, Haley, you can’t hide, you sign off on genocide.”

Haley has emerged as a staunch supporter of Israel in her role at the UN. After Israel killed more than 60 Palestinians at the Great Return March protests last week, Haley defended its “restraint” at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council before walking out of the room when Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour began speaking.

“Nikki, Nikki you will see, Palestine will be free!” the protesters shouted. Haley looked uncomfortable throughout, a small smile falling from her face as the chants continued.

The protest ended with a walkout and loud applause as Haley continued to speak. “While disruptive as that might have been, it’s a reason to celebrate, because my husband and my brother are combat veterans and they fought for their right to be able to do that,” she said. The irony of the situation, with the protest being against her support for Israel’s killing of protesters in Gaza, seems to have escaped her.

Students for Justice in Palestine and 12 other groups released a statement explaining their issue with Haley’s presence at the university. “Nikki Haley’s spiteful actions before and during her time as ambassador to the United Nations demonstrate her blatant discrimination against Palestinians and blind eye to injustices around the world,” it said. “Nikki Haley has worked relentlessly to block the UN Humans Rights investigation into Israel’s murderous crimes in Gaza, which resulted in 109 dead and thousands more injured, including children, women and the disabled.”

The Caves That Sheltered Genocide Victims Now Bring Hope to Rwanda https://briefnews.eu/the-caves-that-sheltered-genocide-victims-now-bring-hope-to-rwanda/ https://briefnews.eu/the-caves-that-sheltered-genocide-victims-now-bring-hope-to-rwanda/#respond Mon, 12 Mar 2018 06:14:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-caves-that-sheltered-genocide-victims-now-bring-hope-to-rwanda/ During the Rwandan genocide of 1994, a network of giant caves located a 90-minute drive northwest of the capital Kigali was used to shelter many members of the victimized Tutsi community. Now, nearly a quarter of a century later, those caves are emerging as symbols of a new, welcoming Rwanda.

The Musanze caves, 32 bat-infested caverns that visitors have compared to the secret underground chamber where Bruce Wayne becomes Batman, may sound intimidating. But the two kilometer–long caves at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park — with five volcanoes and mountain gorillas — are slowly starting to draw an increasing number of tourists to a country still seared in the minds of many for a massacre that claimed at least 500,000 lives.

In 2013, the Rwanda Development Board, the agency responsible for attracting investments to the country, and the nation’s military unveiled a restored avatar of the caves, introducing tourist walkways, trails and stairs to the dark interior, coupled with paved floors. Open to tourists ever since, the caves — once believed to have been home to a king — have seen a steady growth in footfall over the past five years. The estimated 500 tourists who visited the caves in 2017 are nothing compared to the numbers enjoyed by other global destinations. But for a country that for years conjured images of fleeing refugees, the caves represent an important investment in an aspirational future where Rwanda can become a welcoming host.

This has helped us … improve the welfare of our families.

Uwanyagasani Felix, hotel manager

Already, the steady increase in tourism to the caves is boosting the economy of the Musanze district, spawning a rise in the number of hotels being constructed in the area and opening up opportunities for local craft shops to sell their wares. And while local tourists are few, most foreign tourists visit the caves with local guides and drivers, giving rise to a parallel hospitality industry catering to these relatively lower-earning Rwandans.

“(All) this has helped us to grow our business, recruit more workers and improve the welfare of our families,” says Uwanyagasani Felix, manager of Karinsimbi New Services guest house, which caters principally to budget travelers, drivers and guides, charging between $ 15 and $ 30 a night.

Located just a few kilometers from Musanze town — the district capital also known as Ruhengeri — the caves’ proximity to the national park helps draw in tourists who can go looking for gorillas and then trek through the caves, all in a day. The recently developed Musanze Caves Hotel, located in the rear end of one of the caves, is a hub for tourists to sit and relax at the end of their walk through the underbelly of the region’s volcanic mountains. Business at this hotel is booming, and workers happily complain about how they are increasingly finding themselves overwhelmed with the volumes they now need to cater to. Most tourists at the hotel are foreigners, and tourists from outside East Africa are also the principal revenue source for the caves. The entry fee for the caves is $ 5 for an East African and $ 50 for those not from the East African Community — a grouping of six nations including Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda, apart from Rwanda.

A South African tourist describes the visit as “quite perfect” and “extremely well-arranged” on TripAdvisor, encouraging fellow travelers to watch the horror movie Caves before going. “It could add a little spice to the trip.”

But the hotels are only one part of the economy that’s gaining. Many locals have found work in constructing these hotels, others in staffing them. The hotels are also a ready market for locally grown agricultural produce — potatoes and cabbage — allowing farmers to earn more than they could before when they had to travel long distances to find urban buyers. Because the caves are part of Rwanda’s efforts at renewing its image and drawing in foreign travelers and investors, the government has also built roads and other infrastructure here that is lacking in many parts of the country. This, in turn, helps locals transport goods to markets.

And then there are local artisans. Umohoza Aaliyah, who attends to customers at the Inshuti Arts and Culture Center, one of the many shops selling local paintings and handicrafts, says business can be seasonal. But each painting costs around $ 150, and selling even one a day on average brings a lot of money in a country where the per capita income is $ 2 a day. She receives tourists from the U.S. and Europe. To encourage local crafts, the government has also set up a showroom in nearby Kinigi.

But there’s more at stake than just economics. Most locals continue to treat the caves as a part of their modern history because of their role in sheltering those fleeing violence in 1994. Whether the caves succeed or fail as a tourist destination could influence how fast Rwanda overcomes that painful legacy.

GENEVA (Reuters) – The top United Nations human rights official called on Friday for alleged atrocities committed against the Muslim Rohingya minority in Myanmar to be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for prosecution.

Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, also urged Myanmar’s government to allow monitors into northern Rakhine state to investigate what he called suspected “acts of genocide” against the Muslim minority.

Dutch parliament recognizes Armenian genocide, escalating row with Turkey https://briefnews.eu/dutch-parliament-recognizes-armenian-genocide-escalating-row-with-turkey/ https://briefnews.eu/dutch-parliament-recognizes-armenian-genocide-escalating-row-with-turkey/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 23:27:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dutch-parliament-recognizes-armenian-genocide-escalating-row-with-turkey/ The Dutch parliament has voted to recognize as genocide the 1915 massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire. The move deepens a diplomatic row between the Netherlands and Turkey, which has seen envoys recalled.

The motion, which was passed with the support of all major parties, comes after the Turkish government summoned the Dutch charge d’affaires in Ankara on Saturday to express its anger at the motion.
Turkey’s foreign ministry on Thursday condemned the motion’s approval, saying that it would not be legally binding or valid.

Armenia has long sought recognition for the killings as genocide, with the country saying it left some 1.5 million Armenians dead. The Turkish authorities refuse to recognize the events, which took place at the height of World War I, as genocide, arguing that there were atrocities on both sides.

As many as 29 countries, including Russia, Canada, much of the EU, and South American countries, as well as 48 out of 50 US states, have recognized the Armenian genocide.

The motion’s passage comes amid an increasingly tense relationship between the Netherlands and Turkey. Earlier this month, the Dutch Foreign Ministry formally withdrew its ambassador to Ankara and announced that it would not accept the appointment of a new Turkish ambassador.

The ministry’s announcement came after the diplomat was barred from the country following a dispute that began last March, when the Netherlands blocked visas for Turkish officials campaigning for votes among expatriate Turkish in the lead-up to the constitutional referendum which ultimately granted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeping powers.

Erdogan said at the time that the Netherlands must pay for its actions. “Sooner or later, they will pay for this, but we will rapidly bring the Netherlands to account by diplomatic means. We cannot let this go adrift,” he said.

The Turkish president also called the Netherlands “very nervous and cowardly” after it declined to let the country’s foreign minister enter the country. “They are Nazi remnants, they are fascists,” he told supporters at a rally in Istanbul. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte responded by demanding an apology from Ankara, stating that such comments were unacceptable.
