Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton fled his home when faced with a subpoena following a lawsuit by abortion rights groups, according to an affidavit by the man trying to serve it.
According to the affidavit, first obtained by the Texas Tribune, Paxton escaped in a truck driven by his wife, Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton after the process server, Ernesto Martin Herrera, arrived at his home.
The subpoena required Paxton to give evidence Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by several abortion rights groups, who are seeking protections against legal threats made against them for helping women travel to other states to get abortions.
Texas has enacted tough new restrictions on abortion following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling earlier this year.
In his affidavit, Herrera said he parked outside Paxton's address on Monday and saw a man he recognized as Paxton. He approached the front door and saw him turn around and walk away when he saw Herrera.
The door was answered by Sen. Paxton, who said her husband was on the phone and in a "hurry to leave."
Herrera said he had already spotted Paxton inside the house, so he went and waited for an hour.
He then saw Paxton emerging from a garage, but when Herrera called out Paxton's name, he "RAN back inside the house," Herrera said in the affidavit.
Shortly after, Sen. Paxton emerged from the property, got into a black truck parked in front of the house, and opened the passenger side back door, at which point "Mr. Paxton ran from the door inside the garage towards the rear door behind the driver side," said Herrera.
The process server added: "I approached the truck, and loudly called him by his name and stated that I had court documents for him. Mr. Paxton ignored me and kept heading for the truck."
Herrera said he left the subpoena documents by the truck, but the Paxtons sped away "leaving the documents on the ground."
Responding on Twitter to media reports about the incident, Paxton, who is is up for re-election in November's mid-terms, said he fled because he feared for his family over a "stranger lingering outside my home."
—Attorney General Ken Paxton (@KenPaxtonTX) September 27, 2022
He said: "The media wants to drum up another controversy involving my work as Attorney General, so they're attacking me for having the audacity to avoid a stranger lingering outside my home and showing concern about the safety and well-being of my family."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's probing questions at a congressional hearing more than three years ago bore legal fruit this week when New York Attorney General Leticia James announced a $ 250 million civil lawsuit against former President Donald Trump — and credited the Democratic lawmaker with sparking the investigation.
The New York attorney general's office announced Wednesday that it had asked federal prosecutors to investigate Trump's business practice regarding possible federal crimes.
The request comes on the heels of James filing a sprawling lawsuit against Trump, his three eldest children, and the Trump Organization, accusing the former president of inflating his net worth and claiming that his business artificially inflated or deflated asset values for tax purposes.
The announcement is the culmination of James' three-year probe into Trump and his New York business empire. But the story of Trump's most recent legal malady begins at a February 2019 congressional hearing — where a then-freshman lawmaker went toe-to-toe with a convicted criminal.
Just one month into her newfound role as a congresswoman, Ocasio-Cortez stole the show at a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing where Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer and fixer, testified publicly against his one-time boss.
Ocasio-Cortez, who sent shockwaves through Washington, DC, the year prior after she unseated a longtime lawmaker in New York's Democratic primary, earned praise for her questions and follow-ups which prompted Cohen to make some enlightening revelations.
The New York congresswoman probed Cohen about whether Trump had ever provided inflated assets to an insurance company.
Cohen, who was sentenced in 2018 to three years in prison after pleading guilty to charges in two separate investigations, confirmed that the then-president had offered up fraudulent asset information. Cohen also said several Trump Organization executives, including Allen Weisselberg, Ron Lieberman, and Matthew Calamari, were aware of such practices.
"And where would the committee find more information on this?" Ocasio-Cortez asked. "Do you think we need to review his financial statements and his tax returns in order to compare them?"
"Yes, and you'd find it at the Trump Org," Cohen replied.

The New York attorney general this week credited the 2019 exchange with prompting the probe.
"I will remind everyone that this investigation only started after Michael Cohen, the former lawyer, his former lawyer, testified before Congress and shed light on this misconduct," James said.
Trump responded to the New York AG's suit in a statement on Truth Social, accusing James of being a "failed AG" with a "lack of talent." A lawyer for Trump also released a statement, saying James' office is focused neither on "the facts nor the law" and is instead interested in advancing her "political agenda."
State prosecutors in the case are aiming to permanently ban the Trump family from doing business in New York after James said Wednesday that her office believes there is enough evidence in the civil suit to show that Trump and his organization violated federal criminal law.
It's the most recent legal trouble for Trump, who faces a slew of increasing legal troubles, including an FBI probe into how he handled classified materials.

Shoppers with six-figure salaries are turning to Dollar General stores amid soaring inflation in the US, the discount store's CEO Todd Vasos said this week, per CNN.
Speaking at a retail conference on 7 September, Vasos said Dollar General stores had seen an influx of wealthy customers in recent months, CNN reported.
"The highest trade-in that we've seen and the most robust has actually been between the $ 75,000 and $ 100,000 group, Vasos said.
The company says its "core customers" usually earn under $ 40,000 a year, according to CNN.
Vasos added that some of these higher earners had previously been customers at the height of the pandemic and were now returning, CNN reported.
Dollar stores have generally experienced a revenue boost during times of economic uncertainty. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dollar General's profits soared and even eclipsed its closest competitor, Dollar Tree, in May 2020.
In recent months, Dollar General has seen a revenue spike as higher prices and recession fears across the US have made some Americans more financially conscious.
Dollar General reported revenue of $ 9.4 billion in the second quarter of 2022, a 9% increase from the previous year.
Representatives for Dollar General did not immediately respond to Insider's request for further comment made outside normal working hours.
In recent years, the company has added more discretionary items, such as home furnishings and party supplies, to lure wealthier shoppers into Dollar General stores.
Other discount stores have seen a similar trend in recent months. Rival dollar store, Dollar Tree, said the majority of the store's new customers had salaries of $ 80,000 a year or more.
During a recent earnings call, Dollar Tree's CEO, Mike Witynski, said shoppers were "feeling pressured like they never have before," and were "relying on our stores to meet their budget goals."

Former President Donald Trump lashed out at his one-time ally Bill Barr on Friday after the former attorney general defended the Justice Department's raid on Mar-a-Lago.
"Bill Barr had 'no guts,' and got 'no glory.' He was a weak and pathetic RINO, who was so afraid of being Impeached that he became a captive to the Radical Left Democrats," Trump wrote in a post on his social media site, Truth Social, referring to Barr as a "Republican In Name Only."
"Barr never fought the way he should have for Election Integrity, and so much else. He started off OK as A.G., but faded fast – Didn't have courage or stamina. People like that will never Make America Great Again!" Trump continued.
In a second post, he also criticized Barr's handling of the Russia probe and the "Laptop from Hell," presumably a reference to Hunter Biden's laptop.
Barr was largely considered a staunch ally of Trump while serving as his attorney general from February 2019 to December 2020. Their relationship changed when Barr came forward to say the Justice Department had found no evidence of widespread voter fraud that would have impacted the election results, directly defying Trump's insistence that the election had been stolen from him. He departed the administration one month before the end of Trump's term.
In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Barr dismissed arguments that the Justice Department's decision to raid Mar-a-Lago was an overstep.
"I personally think, for them to have taken things to the current point, they probably have pretty good evidence, but that's speculation," Barr said.
He also dismissed Trump's defense that he had declassified all the documents that were being held at his Florida club and residence.
"I, frankly, am skeptical of this claim that, 'I declassified everything,' because, frankly, I think it is highly improbable," Barr said. "And, second, if in fact he sort of stood over scores of boxes, not really knowing what was in them, and then said, 'I hereby declassify everything in here' — that would be such an abuse and such recklessness that it's almost worse than taking the documents."
In another interview with The New York Times, Barr also called Trump's request to have a special master, or a court-appointed outsider, to review the documents a "crock of shit."
During the Mar-a-Lago raid on August 8, the FBI seized highly classified documents, according to court records. The Justice Department is investigating potential violations of laws pertaining to the handling of government documents.

On the veritable eve of ABC’s General Hospital returning with its first fresh episodes in 10 weeks comes word that the character of Sam will soon, if temporarily, look different.
As reported by Daytime Confidential, Passions alum Lindsay Hartley (ex-Theresa) was tapped to fill in as Sam, replacing longtime cast member Kelly Monaco in the role.
“Some big shoes to fill…precious too,” Hartley shared on Twitter. “I hope you enjoy watching Sam as much as I have enjoyed playing her, temporarily
”
Why the short-term switcheroo? Monaco’s mother fielded that burning question on Twitter, once GH fans got to fretting.
“Kelly is great and should be back on set Monday,” Carmina Monaco reassured, explaining that Kelly was sidelined by a 14-day quarantine after encountering a breathing problem with her mask on her first day back on the soap’s set. But after three COVID tests that all came up negative, “I’d say she is better than great,” Carmina said. “Thank you for all of the love
”
ABC recently announced that General Hospital will be back on the air with new episodes beginning Monday, Aug. 3, having resumed production after a four-month coronavirus-imposed shutdown. (Get storyline details here.)
GH will be the second of broadcast TV’s four daytime dramas to get back on the air with new episodes, following CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful, which returned with originals on July 21.
A return date for The Young and the Restless, which has been back in production for a week, remains TBD. NBC’s Days of Our Lives — currently in the throes of a mass cast exodus — will head back to the studio in September without any lapse in fresh material (the show benefited from having eight months of episodes banked when production was halted in March).

Syfy’s Krypton ended its battle-heavy Season 2 with a comparatively intimate and yet seismic slugfest, while Nyssa embarked on a daring journey that was… for the birds?
With Zod’s forces primed to attack the New Lurvan base, Jayna and Dev discuss with a freshly awakened Lyta how badly they would be outnumbered in combat — that to even attempt a defense would be a “suicide mission.” Besides, Jayna suggests that even if they ultimately get to Zod, Lyta won’t want to snuff her own child. But upon hearing of his latest acts of treachery, Lyta declares Dru no son of hers!
Lyta suggests that they enlist disenfranchised Sagitari, who will be loyal to her, and in turn dwindle Zod’s ranks. But even if that works, in the wake of the Wegthor conflict, how can they “fake an entire army,” Dev asks. That actually won’t be so great a problem, Jayna interrupts, noting that Seg has returned — alive, to Lyta’s great relief, and with others at his side. Alas, no sooner does the rebels’ plan start to take shape than Zod catches wind of the potential break in his ranks, and puts a stop to it.
Now definitely outgunned, the rebels, led by Jayna and Dev, commit to fending off the enemy best they can while Seg sneaks off to confront Zod at Kandor. And while lasers fly back and forth on the snowy battleground, Seg arrives at Kandor and addresses a crowd, alerting them to Zod’s somatic reconditioning tactics. When Dru arrives and scoffs at the lad’s claims/attempted coup, Lyta shows up to reveal herself to the people and tell the story of the Black Mercy fakeout. She effectively drives home the fact that Zod, their “savior,” used reconditioning to secure their bidding.
Zod orders the interlopers to be arrested, but his commander, processing all of the news, shrugs, “Arrest them yourself!” Seg then steps into the plaza, ready to rumble, echoing the Superman line: “General, would you care to step outside?” As the men begin trading blows, Seg is clearly being bested. Lyta then joins in the fight. She and Seg, pummeling their son in tandem, proves too much for Dru to handle. Seg pins Dru to the ground and slugs him near-senseless. Seg starts to choke his son to death, but Lyta beckons him to hold back. At Seg’s request, the commander orders the ground forces to retreat from New Lurvan.
Now, what to do with Zod…? We realize that the finale’s cold open — in which the general was about to wage war on no less than Earth — was but a fantasy he is enmeshed in, having eventually been “imprisoned” with Black Mercy, by his parents.
Later, celebrating their big win in New Lurvan, Seg bumps into Lobo, and after much chest puffing on both sides, the frenemies wind up striking a deal: Seg will help find Lobo find Brainiac, if only so he can find his abducted son Jor-El (“Silly name”). Seg also learns that Nyssa has gone “missing,” having stolen Adam’s zeta beam device to travel to planet Rann and find the inventor Sardath (and in turn, track down Brainiac/Jor-El). Exploring where she landed, she finds a mass of charred corpses, and then one scorched humanoid who’s in the process of taking his last breaths. Later, she is aghast to see fly overhead dozens of… hawkpeople?
* Having been crushed by rubble in last week’s battle, Adam Strange lost feeling in his legs — but soon enough Val has outfitted him with a handy jetpack that will take some used to operating, at least when indoors!
* While sweeping the perimeter of New Lurvan after the battle, Dev and Jayna discovered Doomsday, encased underground in ice.
* In the very final moments, following Seg and Logo’s chat, we learn what Brainiac is actually up to — taking tiny Jor-El, in his space vessel, on a long journey to… Earth, where the wee one will be “a god among men.”
What did you think about Krypton‘s sophomore finale?

Mary Barra might have the toughest job in corporate America right now. As mourners gathered on Wednesday to pay tribute to former U.S. President George H.W. Bush at the Washington National Cathedral before a front row filled with current and former American presidents, the chairman and CEO of General Motors made her way into closed-door meetings on Capitol Hill to face another sullen group of national leaders: the members of Congress whose constituencies will be the most impacted by GM’s recent announcement that it will halt production at five plants in North America next year and cut up to 15,000 jobs.
It was nearly 27 years ago that Bush made his way to Japan with then GM Chairman Robert Stempel to meet with Japanese leaders and business executives in an effort to open up markets and make American automobiles more competitive with surging Japanese imports. The trip ended with Bush vomiting his dinner into the Japanese prime minister’s lap. Meanwhile, GM and the other Big Three Detroit automakers continued to have their lunches eaten by their Japanese counterparts.
Barra, the first female CEO at a major automaker, has continued to act decisively to run a smaller, more profitable company.
To steer an American car company through the rugged terrain of the automobile industry in recent decades is to be driving a vehicle that always seems dangerously close to a new cliff. After climbing past Ford in 1927 to become the world’s largest automaker, GM soared for decades, growing into a global behemoth that dwarfed competitors like Toyota and Volkswagen. But chinks in the side-impact armor that began to show during the 1980s and ’90s burst open during the Great Recession when GM came crashing down to earth, abandoning four of its North American brands in return for a federal bailout.
Now, after a resurgent decade, GM again finds itself in a precarious position, and so does Barra. GM “has to be the most thoroughly disliked company in Washington right now,” Rep. Debbie Dingell, a Michigan Democrat, told CNN. In the past week, Barra has been publicly scolded by President Donald Trump and now privately confronted by congressional delegations from each of the three states where the plants targeted for closure are located — Michigan, Ohio and Maryland. GM’s shake-up is the result of a variety of factors, including the massive market shift from sedans to sport utility vehicles, not to mention the tariffs on imported steel imposed by the Trump administration earlier this year, which GM claims have cost it around $ 1 billion.
The 56-year-old Barra, who Forbes recently ranked as the fifth most powerful woman in the world, has faced such fire before. Just days into her new job as GM’s CEO in January 2014, a crisis involving an ignition switch malfunction in older vehicles resulting in 124 deaths threatened to upend the company’s post-bailout success, and Barra was called to publicly testify before Congress on the matter. But the stark remarks that Barra, a GM lifer who earned a Stanford MBA on a GM fellowship and spent 33 years with the company before becoming its CEO, made at an internal town hall meeting at the time were perhaps more significant. “I never want to put this behind us,” she told her company. “I want to put this painful experience permanently in our collective memories.”
The Michigan native’s subsequent bold actions matched her words as she used the crisis as an opportunity to fire underperforming executives, redirect the company’s culture and streamline a bloated organization the way she had once reduced a 10-page dress code policy as the company’s head of HR to two words: “Dress appropriately.” “Mary is as strong as they come,” the legendary investor Warren Buffett once observed of Barra. “She is as good as I’ve seen.”
Barra, the first female CEO at a major automaker, has continued to act decisively to run a smaller, more profitable company, even when that has meant closing GM’s struggling European operation, abandoning markets in places like South Africa and Russia, and selling its Germany subsidiary Opel-Vauxhall. She has also steered the company in some risky but promising directions, from the $ 1 billion purchase of Cruise Automation in 2016 to help the company cement its position in the autonomous driving market to the recent narrowing of its manufacturing to SUVs and trucks. “The reality is that in the sedan market, the Camrys and the Accords and the Civics of the world have dominated that space forever,” says Kelley Blue Book executive analyst Akshay Anand. “And that was not something that was going to change overnight.”
Such moves, however, can require some ruthlessness. The recent layoffs blindsided many workers — right before the Thanksgiving holiday. “These were very difficult decisions,” Barra said in a statement released Wednesday after meeting with members of Congress, where she claimed that many hourly employees at the impacted U.S. plants would have the chance to work at other GM plants. Still, as GM employees brace for the future after the company endures yet another cataclysmic event, this particular “painful experience” may be one that Barra and remaining GM employees want to put behind them and not commit to their “collective memories.”

The UK has the power to unilaterally stop the Brexit process, the EU’s top legal advisers have said, contradicting statements from London that stated Article 50 could only be stopped with agreement of all 27 EU member states.
The advocate general, in a report prepared for the European Court in Strasbourg, stated that the UK could suspend the already triggered two-year Article 50 process, according to a lawyer for the group that brought forward the case.
“Advocate General Campos Sanchez-Bordona proposes that the Court of Justice should declare that Article 50 … allows the unilateral revocation of the notification of the intention to withdraw from the EU,” the bloc’s top court’s statement read.
The Advocate General’s opinions are not binding, judges will now decide on whether or not to accept his advice, though the have a tendency to do so in most cases.

The important data loss bug that interrupted the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, version 1809, may be fixed, but it turns out there are plenty of other weird problems with the release.
As spotted by Paul Thurrott, the update also breaks the seek bar in Windows Media Player when playing “specific files.”
This is the kind of bug that leaves me scratching my head, wondering what changed to break such a thing, and why. The various old and new Windows media stacks are certainly complicated beasts, but it’s not clear what the October 2018 Update even changed in this area. At least this time around, it doesn’t seem that the bug was reported before 1809 actually shipped, though it’s hard to be definitive about this given the difficulty in finding anything in the Feedback Hub bug reporting tool. Microsoft does promise to fix the bug, but the timeframe is vaguely open-ended: it will be “in an upcoming release.”
