  • The Trump administration on Friday said limits on mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants were unnecessary as they were too costly.
  • Those remarks have sparked an outcry from environmentalists who feared the next step would be looser rules favoring the coal industry at the expense of public health.
  • Under the Mercury and Air Toxic Standards, or MATS, enacted under former President Barack Obama, coal-burning power plants were required to install expensive equipment to cut output of mercury.

  • The EPA has been thinking about a rule change since August, but a group of electric utilities said looser rules were not needed since they have already invested billions of dollars in technology to cut emissions of the pollutant and comply.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Trump administration on Friday said limits on mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants were unnecessary as they were too costly, sparking an outcry from environmentalists who feared the next step would be looser rules favoring the coal industry at the expense of public health.

Under the Mercury and Air Toxic Standards, or MATS, enacted under former President Barack Obama, coal-burning power plants were required to install expensive equipment to cut output of mercury, which can harm pregnant women and put infants and children at risk of developmental problems.

The confrontational stance of the Trump administration was described by journalist Josh Rogin in a Washington Post opinion piece. He said Pence outlined it to him during a flight aboard Air Force Two on the VP’s Asian trip.

The US wants China to offer concessions on a wide range of grievances, from intellectual property protection to territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is also expected to make a pledge to change Beijing’s economic, military, and political behavior during his meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires on November 30. If Washington is not satisfied, there will be “an all-out Cold War,” according to Rogin.

“I think much of that will depend on Argentina,” Pence said. “The president’s attitude is, we want to make sure they know where we stand, what we are prepared to do, so they can come to Argentina with concrete proposals that address not just the trade deficit that we face… We’re convinced China knows where we stand.”

Pence said the US is “in a strong position” for a potential escalation of the trade war it has already unleashed on China. He added that the US had no intention of ceding influence in Asia to China and will not back down if Beijing choses to continue its current policies.

“Then so be it,” Pence said. “We are here to stay.”

Washington has been ramping up pressure on Beijing in recent years, imposing tariffs on Chinese goods and lately accusing China of interfering in US domestic politics.

Beijing seems to have no intention to concede. It responded to US tariffs with its own protectionist measures and continues its multibillion-dollar One Belt investment program, which is meant to secure additional stable trade routes to its most important suppliers and customers.

  • China is building the world’s largest indoor ski resort in Shanghai.
  • The one milion square-foot project will have three different ski slopes and offer 25 non-skiing activities
  • The Chinese government is encouraging its citizens to take up skiing and other winter sports ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Skiers in Shanghai, China, won’t have to travel to faraway mountains anymore to hit the slopes. Foreign real-estate investors recently announced plans to build what they say will be the world’s largest indoor ski resort in China’s most-populated city.

The development, called Wintastar Shanghai, is projected to span about one million square-feet, with three separate ski slopes. The site will also offer a range of other attractions. The three slopes will each present different levels of difficulty for skiers, with one described as providing “Olympic standard for training,” CNN reported Tuesday.

In efforts to tackle a global oil glut, OPEC and other supply-cutting nations have been coordinating output levels. After a months-long crude rally, the cartel is meeting this week to discuss increasing supply. Here’s what you need to know.

When are the meetings?

  • Friday, June 22: Current members of OPEC — Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela — are scheduled to meet at 4 a.m. ET. A press conference is set to follow at 7 a.m. ET.
  • Saturday, June 23: OPEC and other countries that have agreed to coordinate supply cuts, also known as OPEC+, are slated for a 4 a.m. ET meeting, followed by a 5 a.m. ET press conference.

How has compliance been so far?

OPEC+ as a whole has largely followed the supply-cutting agreement, with current output about 1.5 million barrels per day below September 2016 levels. HSBC analysts estimate compliance as high as 170% in April, or 850,000 barrels a day below the baseline.

AMD is gearing up for 7-nanometer CPUs and graphics cards https://briefnews.eu/amd-is-gearing-up-for-7-nanometer-cpus-and-graphics-cards/ https://briefnews.eu/amd-is-gearing-up-for-7-nanometer-cpus-and-graphics-cards/#respond Mon, 30 Apr 2018 08:26:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amd-is-gearing-up-for-7-nanometer-cpus-and-graphics-cards/

Intel recently told investors that its 10-nanometer “Cannon Lake” chips won’t be ready until 2019, but by then, it might get leapfrogged by its PC arch-rival. AMD told investors that it’s sampling next-gen Zen 2 processors with 7-nanometer tech in preparation for a launch in 2019. The company is also testing a Radeon Instinct machine learning graphics cards that use 7-nanometer Vega-based technology. The GPUs will be manufactured by TSMC, said AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su, but the company will also use Global Foundries, presumably for processors and other products.

AMD recently launched its second-generation Zen chips, which use current 14-nanometer 10. Zen 2, meanwhile, will move to a 7-nanometer manufacturing process. TSMC reportedly leads the race to develop that tech, which uses bleeding-edge extreme ultraviolet lithography rather than conventional, visible wave-length light. It was a bit of a surprise that AMD would use TSMC for its graphics tech rather than GlobalFoundries, which AMD spun off itself in 2009.

If AMD can hit its targets, it’ll put a lot of heat on Intel, which will only be introducing 10-nanometer tech by 2019. Intel has said that its tech is a “generation ahead” of 10-nanometer tech from other firms, but even if that’s accurate, 7-nanometer chips would erase that gap. According to leaked slides, AMD’s next-gen Vega graphics tech has double the memory interface width and double the bandwidth of its current GPUs.

AMD didn’t say whether the 7-nanometer graphics tech that it’s using for machine learning tech would come to gaming cards, but that seems a foregone conclusion — it’s just a question of when. Either way, things are finally going AMD’s way, as it turned a $ 81 million profit this quarter on $ 1.65 billion of revenue, compared to a $ 33 million loss in the same quarter last year.

  • A US District Judge ruled last week that Florida’s partisan process for the restoration of ex-felons’ voting rights violates the Constitution.
  • This decision could enfranchise many of the 1.7 million Floridians currently denied suffrage due to their criminal records.
  • This could tilt Florida’s electorate to the left for decades.

At the end of 2013, Stephen A. Warner went before Florida’s Executive Clemency Board to request the restoration of his voting rights. Gov. Rick Scott, who presides over the board, promptly pointed out that Warner had been convicted of felony voter fraud in 2010.

“I voted for you,” Warner told him. “I probably shouldn’t respond to that,” the governor said with a laugh. He then granted Warner’s request, restoring his right to vote in Florida. That same day, he denied dozens of applications from ex-felons who declined to profess their political affiliation.

NVIDIA is gearing up to end 32-bit OS support https://briefnews.eu/nvidia-is-gearing-up-to-end-32-bit-os-support/ https://briefnews.eu/nvidia-is-gearing-up-to-end-32-bit-os-support/#respond Sun, 24 Dec 2017 10:01:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nvidia-is-gearing-up-to-end-32-bit-os-support/

The time of the 32-bit OS continues its slow descent into obsolescence. NVIDIA announced that Version 390 of its graphics card driver would be the last to support 32-bit Windows, Linux and FreeBSD systems.

While this shouldn’t come as a surprise 64-bit systems have become the norm, there are folks and organizations out there that are stuck using legacy machines. Maybe they have to run 16-bit or 32-bit applications that 64-bit systems don’t support.

Of course, using older operating systems typically means using less secure operating systems. This is how the WannaCry ransomware was able to cripple the UK’s NHS. It exploited a vulnerability in older versions of Windows that the hospitals were running for various reasons including controlling critical medical equipment and accessing patient data.

If you’re personally running a 32-bit system and you count on NVIDIA graphics drivers, it probably time to start looking to upgrade if you can. Sure change is scary. But not as scary as the security issues that pop up using old technology.

Theranos is gearing up for a rebound with $100 million to get it through 2018 https://briefnews.eu/theranos-is-gearing-up-for-a-rebound-with-100-million-to-get-it-through-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/theranos-is-gearing-up-for-a-rebound-with-100-million-to-get-it-through-2018/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 22:18:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theranos-is-gearing-up-for-a-rebound-with-100-million-to-get-it-through-2018/ Elizabeth Holmes TheranosLarry Busacca/Getty

  • Theranos has raised $ 100 million in secured debt financing, according to an investor letter reviewed by Business Insider.
  • The funding is the first for the embattled blood testing company since March 2015.
  • In the letter, Theranos outlined its plans for the next few years, including working toward FDA approval for its Zika blood test.

Theranos is gearing up for its rebound.

The embattled blood-testing startup told investors on Friday that it had raised $ 100 million in a secured debt financing transaction from Fortress Investment Group. The financing is subject to product and operational milestones, and includes warrants for 4% of the company equity. Fortress was acquired by SoftBank earlier this year.

“Based on our present projections, we believe we will have sufficient liquidity through 2018, by which point we hope to have secured regulatory approval for miniLab testing for the Zika virus and begun submissions for additional assays,” Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes wrote in the investor letter reviewed by Business Insider.

It’s the first time the company’s raised a funding round since 2015, the year it started facing questions about the accuracy of its tests. After the last funding round, the company was valued at $ 9 billion.

Theranos has been under fire since October 2015 after the Journal published an investigation that questioned the accuracy of its blood test. Eventually, one of the company’s lab-testing locations was shut down, and Holmes was originally barred for two years from running a clinical lab. The company later settled with CMS, the government agency responsible for regulating blood-testing labs, by agreeing to not own or operate a clinical lab within the next two years. Theranos said in the letter its continuing to cooperate with the SEC and DOJ in their respective investigations.

A turn-around plan

The letter outlined the quality, regulatory, and structural changes Theranos has taken in the past year, including consolidating its offices into its Newark, California manufacturing space (leaving its space in Palo Alto), adding an anonymous hotline for employees, and getting certain manufacturing licenses. The company has also posted its scientific publications and presentations, an area that has been less transparent for the company in the past.

Holmes also gave investors a timeline of where the company’s headed over the next few years.

  • In the next 18-24 months, Theranos hopes to launch its Zika virus test, and work toward regulatory approval for some infectious disease testing.
  • After that, the company hopes to expand into more routine lab testing.
  • Then, some day, the hope is to have “tailored personal sensing systems,” based on Theranos patents that could be anything from sensors, patches, or testing a patient might be able to do at home.

“We do not underestimate the work ahead,” Holmes wrote. “The Fortress transaction gives us an opportunity to realize product milestones, resolve remaining legal issues and position Theranos for additional financing events down the road. We have a window that requires planning, preparation, and execution.”

Walmart and Amazon are gearing up to take over the $5 billion meal-kit market from Blue Apron https://briefnews.eu/walmart-and-amazon-are-gearing-up-to-take-over-the-5-billion-meal-kit-market-from-blue-apron/ https://briefnews.eu/walmart-and-amazon-are-gearing-up-to-take-over-the-5-billion-meal-kit-market-from-blue-apron/#respond Thu, 21 Dec 2017 22:34:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/walmart-and-amazon-are-gearing-up-to-take-over-the-5-billion-meal-kit-market-from-blue-apron/ amazon meal kitMatt Weinberger/Business Insider

  • Walmart’s stock dropped about 6% in mid-June on the news that Amazon had scooped up Whole Foods. That’s because investors have seen what Amazon can do when it decides to disrupt an industry.
  • This year, Amazon’s e-commerce sales are expected to increase 32%, to $ 196.8 billion dollars, up from $ 149 billion in 2016.
  • The two giants have flexibility when it comes to their offerings — Blue Apron doesn’t, and it could mean bad news for the newly public company.

Walmart was either bored or feeling left out. The retailer, which has been fighting to compete with Amazon in online sales, has officially started selling meal kits. This comes after Amazon bought Whole Foods in June and began selling meal kits shortly after.

The move also comes after the embarrassing IPO of Blue Apron in July, in which shares briefly hit $ 11 before steadily declining to $ 4.27 as of Tuesday morning.

The meal-kit delivery business seems fun on the surface. But in reality, it’s a low-margin, highly competitive market, and Walmart is late to the game.

Walmart is riding the initial hype

Walmart just starting selling meal kits in early December, but it’s already sold out of at least three of its limited options, such as the carb conscious $ 59.70 “Feel Good Meal Kit” from Home Chef that offers chicken, pork chop, and salmon.

The company is selling kits from two third-party vendors, including Chicago-based Home Chef, founded in 2013, and Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Takeout Kit, founded just last year. As of Wednesday, there were 16 options available from the two companies combined.

This seems to be a low-risk way for Walmart to feel out how interested its customers are in meal kits. If the interest is there, expect to see a much wider range of options in 2018 as it looks to take market share from its competitors.

Walmart’s more aggressive online approach seems to be paying off. Last month, it beat Wall Street forecasts on both the top and bottom lines and raised its holiday shopping forecast. In response, its stock shot up about 11% to a new all-time high of $ 100.13.

Amazon will be just as tough to defeat in the meal-kit biz

Walmart’s stock dropped about 6% in mid-June on the news that Amazon had scooped up Whole Foods. That’s because investors have seen what Amazon can do when it decides to disrupt an industry. This year, Amazon’s e-commerce sales are expected to increase 32%, to $ 196.8 billion dollars, up from $ 149 billion in 2016.

To put that in perspective, Amazon is expected to hold 43.5% of total e-commerce sales, up from 38% in 2016. Here’s a breakdown of the online e-commerce market according to data from eMarketer.

Company 2016 Market Share 2017 (Estimated) Market Share
Amazon 38.1% 43.5%
eBay 7.8% 6.8%
Apple 3.2% 3.6%
Walmart 2.8% 3.6%
Home Depot 1.4% 1.5%
Other 46.7% 41%

Obviously, Amazon has the big upper hand. But you probably didn’t need a chart to tell you that.

Amazon is a part of our everyday lives because it’s quick and convenient, and we trust it. When it comes to food, those are the two most important things. We want our food quickly and in the most convenient way possible, but we also are more careful about the place where we buy food vs. where we buy something like a notepad.

The companies huge base of consumers who are already locked into the Amazon world via Prime could be easy to sell on Amazon’s meal kits as it grows the Whole Foods empire. For Walmart, it is slowly becoming a household e-commerce name as it works to prove it can ship quickly and be trusted.

Bottom line: Walmart and Amazon have options, Blue Apron doesn’t

It’s important to note that the U.S. represents a $ 5 billion meal-kit market, so there’s room for more players than Amazon, according to a recent report from food and beverage market researcher Packaged Facts. However, for Amazon and even Walmart, meal kits are just a fun experiment.

If this strategy doesn’t turn out to be profitable, or valuable enough to its customer base, Walmart can easily cut ties with Home Chef and Takeout Kit. However, if it does turn out to be popular and profitable, then Walmart can look at maybe acquiring one of the meal-kit companies, just as private grocery chain Albertsons acquired meal-kit company Plated for $ 200 million in September.

That’s obviously not the case for Blue Apron, which says its mission is to make “home cooking accessible to everyone.” At the end of November, Blue Apron co-founder and former CEO Matt Salzberg stepped down and was replaced by CFO Brad Dickerson.

However, a new captain can’t save a sinking ship — they can only try to keep it afloat a while longer. The bottom line is that Blue Apron didn’t have a unique business model that would prevent big-time players like Amazon and Walmart, or even Albertsons, from doing the exact same thing, except better and cheaper.

Walmart is right where it needs to be for now. The company had a blowout earnings round, is expecting a big Holiday shopping season, and is experimenting with new ways to continue to grow a loyal online customer base through things like a meal-kit delivery option.

One thing’s for sure: Blue Apron is getting coals in its stocking.
