An American journalist who pointed out the extensive edits the New York Times made to its article about the Israeli bombing of Gaza found himself in a heated Twitter argument with the Israeli consulate. A Twitter account “Editing The Gray Lady,” which tracks edits to the Times, revealed on Monday how the US paper of record changed its headlines and copy to describe the events in Gaza. “Incredible propaganda,” Ben Norton, a New York-based writer for The Real News, commented on the edits, adding that the Times “bent over backward and rewrote its article to erase how Israel initiated the violence in Gaza, obscuring the fact that Gaza’s self-defense was ‘retaliatory’ and instead pushing the covert Israeli operation until the end.” That attracted the attention of the Israeli consulate in New York, however, which admonished Norton to “get it right.” Norton was having none of it, laying out a timeline of events in Gaza and insisting he did get it right and the consulate was wrong. “If the terrorist propaganda TV station of a genocidal terrorist group like Hamas is your source of news, we understand exactly what sort of ‘journalist’ you are,” the consulate replied. “Bombing a TV station of a news outlet is a war crime, even if you don’t like the journalists running it,” Norton shot back. If the terrorist propaganda TV station of a genocidal terrorist group like #Hamas is your source of news, we understand exactly what sort of “journalist” you are. pic.twitter.com/gz1xG9vok4 — Israel in New York (@IsraelinNewYork) November 14, 2018 This is hardly the first time Israeli diplomats have used Twitter to directly address journalists reporting on the conflict. In August, Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon accused the BBC of lying over a Gaza story and demanded the British broadcaster “change it IMMEDIATELY.” In July, Nahshon lashed out at CNN International to “STOP YOUR MANIPULATION,” saying they “got it wrong and not for the first time.” Think your friends would be interested? The deadliest Israeli-Palestinian clashes since the 2014 Gaza War have resulted in three more casualties: Hani Ramzi Afaneh and Mohammad Khalil Shaqoura, both 21, as well as 12-year-old Shadi Abul-Al, WAFA news agency reported.
At least 248 people have been injured or suffered from tear gas exposure, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Fifteen people have been hit by live bullets.
Israeli Defense Forces have referred to the protesters as “rioters,” insisting its response was proportionate and in line with its rules of engagement. The Israeli army spokesman said that the protesters pelted Israeli forces with rocks, burn tires and threw two grenades and bombs, inflicting an injury to one Israeli soldier. The soldier had suffered a shrapnel wound and received medical attention on the spot.
The IDF also claimed that nine Palestinians attempted to break through the fence on the Israel-Gaza border but were stopped by the Israeli security forces. In retaliation, the IDF targeted two Hamas positions inside Gaza with tanks and aircraft.
Tensions have been running high on the border for six months now, since the first “Great March of Return” protest on March 30 drew some 30,000 Palestinians. So far, 178 Palestinians have been killed and over 19,000 injured in the weekly protests.
The situation has been exacerbated by the US recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and the grand opening of the embassy there in May, which has drawn anger from Palestinians, the entire Arab world, and even some US allies in Europe.
The Trump administration’s recent decision to defund the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) and shut down the Palestine Liberation Organization offices in Washington have also fueled Palestinian anger.

A 17yo Palestinian has been killed by an Israeli sniper during Friday’s ‘Great March of Return’ protest. Nearly 400 others, including journalists and paramedics, were injured in clashes with the IDF along the Gazan border.
Israeli snipers have once again been active along the Gaza-Israeli border as Palestinian protesters continue to put pressure on the frontier in weekly protests that started March 30. The latest march drew at least 7,000 activists, who, among other things, protested against Washington’s recent move to cut some $ 60 million in funding from the UN Work and Relief Agency (UNWRA).
Amid tense confrontation just east of the Rafah crossing, one of the snipers shot 17-year-old Bilal Mustafa Khafaja in the chest, killing the teenager, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Another 395 people, including 35 minors, three paramedics and three journalists were injured in the clashes near the border fence, Wafa news agency reported. While many people sought medical treatment from tear gas and rubber bullets, at least 100 people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds.

In response to the violent “riots” which “damaged security infrastructure,” the Israeli military struck two Hamas observation posts in Gaza. “Since March, Gazans have violently rioted along the security fence every Friday and today was no exception,” the IDF said. “The rioters rolled burning tires and threw rocks, firebombs, and a grenade at IDF troops who responded with riot dispersal means.”

GAZA/SDEROT, Israel (Reuters) – Israel and Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip, agreed on a truce on Thursday, two Palestinian officials said, an understanding that would end an escalation in fighting that has drawn mutual threats of war.
There was no formal comment from Israel, but an Israeli official who spoke on condition of anonymity denied a cease-fire had been reached. Israel rarely acknowledges reaching any such agreement with Hamas, a group it designates as a terrorist organization and with which it has fought three wars in the past decade.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

“IDF fighter jets targeted over 20 terror sites in military compounds and in a Hamas training camp. Among the sites targeted were a weapons manufacturing and storage facility, a complex used for the Hamas naval force and a military compound used for rocket-launching experiments,” the IDF said Thursday morning.
At least three people were killed and over a dozen injured in the Israeli raids, according to Wafa News.
The Israeli military said it was forced to respond to an ongoing barrage of missile fire coming from the Gaza strip. Throughout the course of Wednesday and early hours of Thursday morning, Hamas fired over 150 projectiles into southern Israel, forcing the IDF to initially conduct 12 raids on the Palestinian enclave. More raids were then ordered after Hamas failed to stop their belligerent activity.

“Additionally, five training camps were targeted as well as a main warehouse and a meeting point used by the senior commanders of the Khan Yunis Brigade,” the IDF said. “Thus far, over 140 of Hamas’ strategic military sites have been targeted.”
The IDF remains on high alert and said it is prepared for a variety of scenarios. “Hamas is responsible and bears the consequences for the ongoing events,” the military reiterated.
While sirens continue to sound off in southern Israel, the Iron Dome managed to intercept 25 launches out of an estimated 150 fired by the militants. The city of Sderot saw the most action throughout Wednesday, with at least four projectiles landing there.
The rest of the missiles are believed to have landed in uninhabited areas. At least 19 people so far have sought medical help related to the attacks. Among the latest casualties is a 30-year-old foreign worker from Thailand who suffered severe injuries to her chest and limbs, Times of Israel reports.
Wednesday’s cross-border escalation is believed to have started after an IDF tank struck Hamas posts in Gaza, in retaliation for an attack on a vehicle involved in the construction of a barrier along the border.

Israel blocked supplies of fuel and gas to Gaza on Thursday in response to the continued sending of incendiary kites across the border, according to Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman. The measure will affect the Palestinian enclave which already suffers power cuts, especially for hospitals, AFP reported. The crackdown comes in response to “the pursuit of terrorism,” using incendiary balloons and border clashes between Israel and Gaza, Lieberman said in a statement. Israel has lost tracts of farmland and forests to fires set by kites and helium balloons laden with incendiary material and flown over from Gaza, Reuters said.

Israeli fighter jets have carried out strikes against Hamas targets in the Gaza strip, in response to the violence and “terrorist acts” the group instigated at the border, as well as cross-border rocket launches, the IDF said.
“Tonight, IDF fighter jets targeted an attack terror tunnel in southern Gaza, in addition to several terror sites throughout Gaza, among them complexes used to prepare arson terror attacks and a Hamas terror training facility,” the IDF said, posting a video of the strike.

The strikes, the army said, were conducted in response to Hamas-instigated violence along the security fence at the Israeli-Gaza border, and to the cross-border arson attacks which, the IDF claimed, damages Israeli land on a daily basis.
During the Israeli raid, Hamas militants reportedly retaliated by launching 17 rockets, five of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. “Hamas is responsible for the events transpiring in Gaza and emanating from it and will bear the consequences for its actions,” the IDF said.

A mysterious explosion in Gaza city has killed at least two teens, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. While the cause of the blast is still being investigated, police have reportedly discovered fireworks at the incident site.
On Saturday afternoon an explosion rocked the Shujaeya neighborhood in Gaza City. Ambulances immediately arrived at the site of the incident to discover two 17-year-olds dead and another eight people wounded. Three of the injured remain in critical condition after being rushed to the hospital, the Health Ministry said.

Fatal explosive incidents in the Palestinian enclave are often blamed by local authorities on accidents or Israeli subversion, while Israelis usually suggest that they happen at weapons manufacturing or storage facilities belonging to Hamas.

A vehicle and two Hamas “observation posts” have been targeted and destroyed by Israeli Defense Forces, while the Iron Dome anti-missile system has intercepted at least three rockets fired at Israel from Gaza.
A “barrage of projectiles” was launched towards southern Israel after IAF aircraft and IDF tanks shelled the militant organization’s targets inside the enclave. The destroyed targets included a vehicle allegedly belonging to a Hamas operative, believed to have been “heavily involved” in explosive balloon attacks. In addition, the IDF struck two Hamas observation posts.
“The Hamas terror organization will bear the consequences for facilitating terror and instability,” the IDF said.

On Tuesday night sirens sounded in Hof Ashkelon, Sha’ar HaNegev and Eshkol Regional Councils when nine rockets were launched from the Gaza strip, the IDF said. One of the projectiles was intercepted by the IDF’s Iron Dome Aerial Defense System. Afterwards, Israel detected three more incoming rockets, two of which were tackled by the air defense system. There were no reports of injuries or damage from the other eight projectiles, which usually strike uninhabited areas.
Earlier in the day, an Israeli jet destroyed another car and an observation post used by Palestinians to launch arson balloons. Over the last couple of weeks, Israel has intensified its effort to stop balloon and kite launches of homemade incendiary devices, which have become a symbol of Arab resistance during the Great March of Return protests along the Gaza-Israeli border since late March. In order to put a halt to these terrorist activities, Israel has limited the amount of helium gas that can be brought into Gaza, restricting it to medical treatment purposes only. The IDF and the IAF, meanwhile, intensified the crackdown on Hamas, which they hold fully responsible for the upsurge in cross-border violence.
