On disc, we’ve got one of this year’s Best Actor nominees, one of this year’s Best Foreign Film nominees, a Best Foreign Film nominee from 1960, a pair of worthwhile catalog titles, and a bit of a cheat.

ON NETFLIX

High Flying Bird: There’s one edit in Steven Soderbergh’s latest that tells you everything you need to know about how he makes a “sports movie”: he takes us riiiiiight up to the moment when a high-pressure round of one-on-one basketball is about to begin — and then cuts away to a rich NBA team owner and his trophy wife boarding their private jet. That juxtaposition underscores what the insightful script by Moonlight’s Tarell Alvin McCraney is really about: not the game but the commodification of the game, and the treatment of its players not as people or even athletes, but assets. Soderbergh, as you’ve probably heard, shot it on an iPhone for maximum flexibility and speed, and it moves like a shot (and looks awfully good), while the great André Holland (the MVP of Soderbergh’s late and lamented The Knick) is terrific as the fast-talking, faster-thinking agent at the story’s center.

ON AMAZON PRIME

Wild Honey Pie!: There’s a particular kind of feeling to fooling around in an afternoon that moves into evening, as drinks are consumed, inhibitions are shed, secrets are told, and desires are indulged — how quickly little flirtations get out of hand. Jamie Adams’ low-key comedy/drama gets that feeling just right, and a lot of other notes besides; it captures the complications of long-term relationships with candor and humor. And its modesty is its virtue, spending just a few tough days with its long-married and increasingly frustrated couple (played with warmth and skill by Jemima Kirke and Richard Elis). A charming little movie, filled with quiet truths.

ON DVD / VOD

Shoplifters: Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Palme d’Or winner is a fascinating exercise in the power of perspective in regarding protagonists, though it’s nowhere as dry as that sentence makes it sound. (Put that quote on the DVD case, Magnolia!) It’s the story of a family bound by desperation, scraping by on bits of work and stolen food, and how they take on a new member who seems in even direr straights. “I bet they’re relieved she’s gone,” the mother says of the little girl from the abusive home, and it feels less like a kidnapping than just another shoplifting. Kore-eda works in such a deliberately slice-of-life style, with such assumed sympathy for its protagonists, that the contrast when suddenly seeing this story from the outside is overwhelming; it’s the kind of movie that you don’t realize has snuck up on you until you’ve already been clobbered.

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

At Eternity’s Gate: “When facing a flat landscape, I see eternity,” Vincent van Gogh asks. “Am I the only one who sees it?” Julian Schnabel asks that question (over-asks it a bit, to be quite honest) in this biographical drama, which covers the last few years of Van Gogh’s life — a period in which he felt like a rudderless failure, and went a bit mad. Gate respects and honors the man, played with full-blooded power by Willem Dafoe, but isn’t afraid to puncture him occasionally (often via his interactions with an entertaining Oscar Isaac, as friend/rival Paul Gauguin). This is an ideal match of director and subject; many of these compositions are, yes, painterly, but Schnabel also brings a technician’s understanding of the art and a fellow journeyman’s sympathy, using intensely personal handheld camerawork to capture the artist’s inner life, and not just the immortal work he created. (Includes audio commentary and featurettes.)

The Deuce (Season 2): We don’t usually include TV show sets in this movie round-up, but, I’m sorry, exceptions must be made; the latest by The Wire’s David Simon and George Pelecanos is not only one of the most cinematic shows on the tube, but it’s one steeped in movie history. Dirty movie history, that is, as Season 2 moves into the era of porno chic and New Hollywood grime, while maintaining its keen interest in the history of 42nd Street sex work and the never-ending cycle of NYC clean-up. Its stars all shine, but Maggie Gyllenhaal is particularly memorable this time around, continuing to find the complicated corners of a pornographer with the soul of an artist. The Deuce keeps getting lost in the shuffle of Peak TV and HBO overload; it’s worth catching up with. (Includes featurettes.)

ON BLU-RAY

La Vérité: The one and only Brigitte Bardot is at her absolute coolest in this 1960 Best Foreign Film nominee by director Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diabolique), a new addition to the Criterion Collection. She turns in an eye-openingly tortured and genuinely affecting performance as Dominique, a young woman standing trial for the murder of her lover; her carefree early days and the ramp-up to the crime are dramatized in flashbacks, sumptuously photographed and vibrantly played; it’s an evocative portrait of ‘60s French “café life,” and a potent reminder of this gifted performer’s skill and nuance. (Includes archival interviews and Clouzot documentary.)

The Group: Sidney Lumet — best remembered for the gritty, testosterone-fueled heights of Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, and Prince of the City — was a little out of his element with this 1966 adaptation of Mary McCarthy’s best-selling novel, which details the post-graduate adventures of a tight-knit group of young women. But the film is handsomely mounted (Boris Kaufman’s color cinematography is to die for), and he marshals one hell of a cast, including Candice Bergen, Joan Hackett, Shirley Knight, Larry Hagman, Hal Holbrook, and the future Lucille Bluth, Jessica Walter, whose catty singleton (“I’m appalled by all this vulgar breeding”) is the unqualified scene stealer. (Includes trailer.)

Starsky & Hutch: You’ve probably forgotten this 2004 adaptation of the beloved ‘70s cop show (new on Blu from Warner Archive), and I can’t say I’d blame you; it’s sort of your prototypical early-oughts Frat Pack comedy (including, as it does, starring roles for Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Vince Vaughn), crossed with that other bane of our existence, the classic TV show adaptation. But there’s a lot to like about this one: its absolute refusal to take its source material seriously; the well-honed comedy-team byplay of Stiller and Wilson; stellar supporting turns from Jason Bateman, Juliette Lewis, Fred Williamson, Chris Penn, Patton Oswalt, and (especially) Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear; and a reminder that, pre-Hangover sequels, director Todd Phillips was more than capable of breathing comic life into stale material. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, gag reel, and deleted scenes.)

A Russian Tu-142 bomber blindsided a US flagship taking part in NATO’s massive Trident Juncture 18 drills off Norway. Spectacular photos of the flyby have expectedly sparked a media uproar, while Moscow called the flight routine.

The plane appeared in the air at the very moment the marines on board the USS Mount Whitney, the flagship of the US Sixth Fleet, gathered on deck for a group photo. The flyby provided the American troops with a rare opportunity to check out the Tu-142, which NATO codenamed ‘Bear-F.’

“It’s a long-range maritime patrol reconnaissance plane,” one of the marines said. Military.com reported that the US soldier was “fascinated” as he witnessed the Russian Bear live in the air for the first time.

But tabloids, among them The Sun, rushed to sensationalize the incident, saying that the Russian plane was “risking all-out war with 29 allied states” – if not an all-out Third World War.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that two Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft performed a planned flight over the neutral waters of the Norwegian Sea on Friday. The planes spent 12 hours in the air and successfully returned to base in the Russian northern-central Vologda Region.

“All flights of the naval aircraft of the Russian Navy are carried out in strict accordance with the international rules for the use of airspace without violating the borders of other countries,” the ministry said.

Trident Juncture 18 underway in Norway are NATO’s largest drills in decades, involving some 50,000 troops, 10,000 combat vehicles, 65 ships, and 250 aircraft.

After nine years of construction and controversy, China is set to officially unveil the world’s longest sea bridge on Tuesday at a ceremony in Hong Kong.

At more than 34 miles long, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is part of a master plan to create a global science and technology hub by connecting two Chinese territories, Hong Kong and Macau (the world’s largest gambling center), to nine nearby cities.

With an economic output of $ 1.5 trillion, the new mega-region — known as the Greater Bay Area — is positioned to rival Silicon Valley. The plan also includes the construction of an $ 11 billion bullet train, which opened in September.

The bridge is expected to open to traffic on Wednesday, though only certain vehicles — shuttles, freight cars, and private cars with permits — are allowed to cross. Pedestrians and bicyclists are prohibited.

While some have criticized the structure as a waste of taxpayer dollars, others tout its ability to connect up to 70 million people in the region.

Take a look at its remarkable design below.

The $ 20 billion structure is 20 times as long as the Golden Gate Bridge.

The title of world’s largest sea bridge previously belonged to the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, which stretches 26.3 miles.

The structure should hold up in the face of 211 mph winds. That claim was put to the test in September, when Typhoon Mangkhut swept through Hong Kong, destroying roofs, shattering windows, and toppling trees.

Collusion! Twitter melts down as Trump Jr. and Mueller spotted at same airport gate https://briefnews.eu/collusion-twitter-melts-down-as-trump-jr-and-mueller-spotted-at-same-airport-gate/ https://briefnews.eu/collusion-twitter-melts-down-as-trump-jr-and-mueller-spotted-at-same-airport-gate/#respond Fri, 27 Jul 2018 22:44:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/collusion-twitter-melts-down-as-trump-jr-and-mueller-spotted-at-same-airport-gate/

Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Donald Trump Jr. were photographed at the same airport gate, setting tongues in Washington wagging about the ongoing ‘Russiagate’ investigation, flying in coach class, and the notorious Gate 35X.

The photo, published by Politico on Friday, shows Mueller and Trump Jr. at Gate 35X of the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). The special prosecutor is seated on the left of the photo, reading a newspaper. Behind him, to the right, the president’s son is talking on his cell phone.

The two men are seemingly unaware of each other. That has not stopped the #Resistance from fantasizing about the “meeting.”

A NBC reporter wondered why President Trump’s son would be flying commercial. Donald Jr. and his brother Eric have run the Trump Organization since their father was sworn into office in January 2017. Trump has famously used his full-size private jet on the campaign trail, so why was his son flying coach, and to where?

A Politico reporter answered the second question at least, confirming that the flight was headed to Westchester County Airport in New York.

The one thing DC pundits, Trump supporters and #Resistance types could agree on is that the Gate 35X in DCA’s Terminal C was “one of the worst airport gates ever, anywhere, of all time,” as Jessica Sidman of The Washingtonian put it.

The gate is actually a conduit to a bus terminal, where passengers board shuttles to the small airplanes parked on the tarmac. Around 6,000 people pass through it every day.

‘Baldur’s Gate’ designer James Ohlen leaves BioWare after 22 years https://briefnews.eu/baldurs-gate-designer-james-ohlen-leaves-bioware-after-22-years/ https://briefnews.eu/baldurs-gate-designer-james-ohlen-leaves-bioware-after-22-years/#respond Fri, 13 Jul 2018 08:09:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/baldurs-gate-designer-james-ohlen-leaves-bioware-after-22-years/

James Ohlen might not be a household name, but if you love video games, you might have played some of the titles he helped create. He became a full-time designer to work on the original Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II back in the ’90s, and he has since worked as lead designer and creative director for various projects, including Star Wars: The Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic. Now, the industry veteran has announced that he’s leaving BioWare after 22 years of working for the company. In fact, he’s taking a break from video games altogether to embark on “something smaller and more personal” — a publishing company focused on creating Dungeons & Dragons adventures, in particular.

Ohlen said the most fun he’s ever had in the industry was working on Baldur’s Gate back in the late ’90s. He said he’s been a D&D fanatic since he was a kid and that it’s time to be part of it again. In his tweets, Ohlen linked to his new project, which describes itself as a “a publishing venture formed by a small group of passionate veterans from the video games industry.” For his first book with the new company called Odyssey of the Dragonlords, he’s working with fellow SW:TOR designer Jesse Sky.

While his departure will surely be a loss to BioWare, it seems fitting that he’s leaving the company for a D&D-related reason. According to GameInformer, the developer’s founders, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, first heard of him, because he ran two legendary D&D campaigns with lengthy waiting lists.

Google Maps Street View: Has the Gate to Hell finally been discovered? https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-has-the-gate-to-hell-finally-been-discovered/ https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-has-the-gate-to-hell-finally-been-discovered/#respond Thu, 15 Mar 2018 11:21:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-maps-street-view-has-the-gate-to-hell-finally-been-discovered/

Google Maps Street View – developed in 2007 two years after Google Maps – is often used by people looking to plan their directions or look up an address.

It has also captured a number of beautiful landmarks and natural phenomena over the years.

Yet the website has found what appears to be the End of the World, coming with directions to Hell.

Of course, it isn’t all that it seems after all.

Spotted in Altus Avenue in Mojave, California is a sign reading “End” where the road stops.

Looking past it there is nothing in sight apart from a long dirt track and desert for miles.

Worryingly, there is also a sign on the ground pointing to hell, making it all the more ominous.

It is actually marking the end of the desert highway on the Mojave Desert.

As the end of the road, drivers attempting to traverse the region are warned to turn back as opposed to tackle the treacherous route.

The Mojave Desert is one of the driest deserts in North America, meaning it would be a great destination for hell with the weather conditions.

There is little in the area although is known to be the only location where the Joshua trees are present.

Route 66 passes through the Mojave Desert, which is one of the original highways in the US, measuring 2,448 miles.

Another gate to hell has been captured by the Google cameras.

A mysterious sight in Turkmenistan shows a crater that has been burning for over 40 years yet no-one knows why.

Called the Darvaza Gas Crater, translating as “Door to Hell”, it has become a popular tourist attraction with travellers.

It has been burning since 1971 and is the largest gas field in the world.

British Airways expands its biometric boarding gate trials in the US https://briefnews.eu/british-airways-expands-its-biometric-boarding-gate-trials-in-the-us/ https://briefnews.eu/british-airways-expands-its-biometric-boarding-gate-trials-in-the-us/#respond Fri, 09 Mar 2018 04:29:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/british-airways-expands-its-biometric-boarding-gate-trials-in-the-us/

British Airways is expanding its biometric boarding gate tests in the US. Last November, it began testing self-service boarding gates in Los Angeles Airport that don’t require customers to produce either their boarding pass or their passport. Instead, passengers only need to look into a camera, wait for their biometric data to be checked against their passport, visa or immigration photos and then walk onto the plane once their identity has been verified. So far, the US tests have been limited to those flying out of LAX on British Airways flights to Heathrow. But now, the self-service gates are also being tested in Orlando International Airport with customers flying to Gatwick as well as in New York’s JFK airport and Miami International Airport with passengers flying in to the US from Heathrow.

Passengers still have to produce their boarding pass and passport when going through check-in and security, but the biometric boarding gates eliminate the need to use the documents when boarding. British Airways says that in Los Angeles, the gates have allowed 400 passengers to board in 22 minutes, which is less than half of the time it typically takes. The company says that the technology, produced by SITA, uses facial identification systems similar to those on smartphones.

British Airways is far from the only company developing biometric systems for airports. JetBlue is running a similar trial that allows passengers to self-board without travel documents on flights from Boston to Aruba. And last year, Delta began trying out facial recognition systems for checking luggage and using fingerprints instead of boarding passes. Dubai International Airport is working on a tunnel equipped with facial recognition cameras and iris scanners that would eliminate the need for travel documents and both Australia and the US are interested in wider applications of biometric systems in airports.

“Our latest trial with SITA in Orlando is helping us to reduce the time it takes to board our aircraft, and early indications are that using biometrics for arrivals has huge potential too,” Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ director of brand and customer experience, said in a statement. “These trials will help us to evolve the technology and processes we use to best suits the needs of our customers.”

  • Lindsey Vonn did not medal in the ladies’ combined event when her ski clipped a gate on her final run.
  • Vonn had entered the final run in first place and had a good shot to win gold in the slalom portion of her final Olympic event.
  • Fellow American Mikaela Shiffrin salvaged another medal by jumping up from sixth to second in the final run.

There was no final moment of Olympic glory for Lindsey Vonn as she blew a good shot at winning a gold medal in the ladies’ alpine combined when she clipped a gate and did not finish the slalom portion of the event.

Vonn entered the second run in first place, with more than a 0.7-second lead over Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway and Michelle Gisin of Switzerland. Fellow American Mikaela Shiffrin was in sixth place after the downhill portion with a good shot at making up ground in the slalom, her specialty.

The bridges to make ‘The World’s Most Spectacular Bridges’ list have been crowned by National Geographic Travel.

There are 12 included from around world that are sure to have adventure-seekers, engineers, bikers and romantics checking them off their bucket lists.

From the fairytale-esque Die Rakotzbrucke in Kromlau, Germany to the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy – would you pay these bridges a visit?

Die Rakotzbruck, Kromlau, Germany

Nicknamed the ‘Devil’s Bridge’, the 19th century bridge is nestled in the fairytale setting of Kromlau Park.

Commissioned by Friedrich Hermann Rotschke in 1860, the bridge has become a spectacle amongst the park’s visitors as its specific design creates a circle when its reflected in the water below.

Rolling Bridge, London, England

Paddington Basin isn’t like any ordinary office development in the capital. Created in 2004, Heatherwick Studio’s Rolling Bridge gives city commuters and tourists access to the Grand Union Canal.

The bridge’s eerily quiet hydraulics were inspired by Stan Winston’s animatronic dinosaur tails from the film Jurassic Park, writes Caitlin Atherton for National Geographic.

The bridge mimics a caterpillar unravelling after opening to let boat traffic through.

Inca Rope Bridge, Akpurimac River, Peru

Known as Q’eswachaka, the bridge is among the last handwoven Incan bridges.

It’s made of woven grass and spans a massive 118 feet, hanging 60 feet above the river.

Every June, local bridge builders gather to untie the existing bridge and weave a new one out of local ishu grass. A traditional song and dance then takes place.

Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge, Zermatt, Switzerland

Located in Randa, the bridge is the longest hanging bridge for pedestrian use in the world.

It offers hikers a jaw-dropping experience, spanning 494 metres and running 85 metres above ground level at its highest point.

While the bridge is free to access, it may be one for those afraid of heights to avoid as you can se through the grating you walk along.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California

Carrying both US Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait, the suspension bridge has been been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Rather than walking along the bridge sidewalk you can now enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the bridge from Hawk Hill’s new trail or while whale watching on a deck trampoline as you sail beneath the bridge at sunset.

Stepping Stone Bridge, Fenghuang, China

Made of cut and sunken stones, the bridge stretches across the Tuojiang River in China’s Phoenix Ancient Town.

It may be a challenge for some walkers, but the surrounding views have been described as second to none.

Living Root Bridge, Nongriat, India

Like the name suggests, the bridge it made out of Indian rubber tree roots and is said to be able to support the weight of 50 people at once.

The double-decker bridge is soon to be a triple-decker one and is expected to survive several hundred more years.

Bridge of Sighs, Venice, Italy

Passing over the Rio di Palazzo, the bridge is made of white limestone and was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment.

The bridge’s name was given by the poet Lord Byron to suggest that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice through the window before being taken down to their cells.

Britain’s most beautiful rail stations were revealed at the end of last year.
