Tuesday morning’s Good Morning Britain saw hosts Adil Ray and Kate Garraway take the reins in regular host Susanna Reid’s absence and following Piers Morgan’s permanent exit last month. The ITV presenting pair had plenty to get through, including interviews with Alex Salmond, Jonathan Ashworth and Nadhim Zahawi. However, many GMB viewers decided enough was enough after witnessing a number of interruptions throughout the interviews and made their opinions on the show clear.

While there were a number of talking points from Tuesday’s GMB, none more grabbed the attention than the interview with Mr Salmond.

The Scottish politician, who’s heading the new Alba Party to oppose Nicola Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party, became embroiled in several heated clashes with Garraway as he tried to discuss his party’s plans and quest for Scottish independence.

In one instance, Mr Salmond even had to ask the GMB presenter to stop interrupting as they “weren’t going to get anywhere”.

“It’s going to be very difficult to conduct the interview, can you let me answer the question?” Mr Salmond said as he tried to keep the chat on course.

But it wasn’t just during the chat with Mr Salmond that Garraway and Ray both came under fire for.

Both GMB hosts grilled Mr Ashworth on his and Labour’s stance on the possibility of Covid passports being rolled out in the future.

However, with Mr Ashworth insisting he found it “discriminatory”, Garraway and Ray both found themselves butting in to question why he was so firmly against the idea.

And it didn’t take long for both GMB hosts to begin trending on social media as thousands of fans voiced their disdain for the show’s outlook following Morgan’s exit in March.

“Watching @GMB and Kate Garraway is annoying talking over guests. They can’t even finish their points smh,” added a fourth.

While a fifth in response to the Mr Salmond interview penned: “Wasn’t much of an interview sadly thanks to Kate Garraway shouting over him.

“The amount of salary she takes you would at least expect her to be able to undertake the basics of her role.”

And a sixth didn’t mince their words: “Kate Garraway with a disgusting interview, not interested in what Alex has to say just throwing mud at him in the hope it will stick and constantly talking over him.”

A final viewer surmised: “@gmb the interview with @AlexSalmond with @kategarraway constantly interrupting him was one of the worst I’ve seen.

“It’s every show now it happens with a guest or cutting over a fellow presenter @benshephard. Somebody speak to Kate, it’s getting ridiculous now and it’s so rude.”

Garraway and Ray were filling in this week as Reid takes a break from presenting duties.

Ray will keep his place as the main host for the rest of April although ITV is still yet to announce a permanent replacement for Morgan.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays at 6am on ITV.

“It is disappointing though for anyone under 50 that is now going to have to wait longer for their vaccinations than they might have otherwise done,” Hawkins said.

“Can you just clear up what is behind this issue with supply because the Prime Minister pointed to the fact there was a delay for various technical reasons.

“But we know that India’s Foreign Minister has told the parliament there that vaccine export conditions are based on the assessment of adequate availability at home. So is it to do with the Indian Government not wanting to release these supplies to us at the moment?”

“No, the Indian Government hasn’t blocked the export of this vaccines, there have been challenges at the Serum Institute and they’ve done a fantastic job, the volumes of vaccines they’ve produced is amazing. We will get this vaccine, it won’t interrupt the overall flow,” Dowden replied.

Kate Garraway demands Tory minister ‘sort it out’ after ‘pitiful’ nurse pay rise https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-demands-tory-minister-sort-it-out-after-pitiful-nurse-pay-rise/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-demands-tory-minister-sort-it-out-after-pitiful-nurse-pay-rise/#respond Fri, 05 Mar 2021 10:57:12 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-demands-tory-minister-sort-it-out-after-pitiful-nurse-pay-rise/

Health Minister Nadine Dorries joined Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard on Good Morning Britain today to discuss the health department’s recommendation that NHS staff in England should receive a one percent pay rise next year. NHS staff have been excluded from a pay freeze for most public sector workers but Garraway clashed with Dorries over the “pitiful” suggestion.

Garraway said: “There are problems with saving lives as well as the economy, that’s the problem.

“But you know of course we know in our heads that needs to be but I think the problem is we’ve had so many words from Government about the wonder of the NHS, about the brilliance of nurses.

“They’ve been part of the most successful bit of the Government programme, delivering the vaccine, they’ve been the people doing the delivering.

“We’ve all clapped for carers, we’ve all said praise and then the reality looks like a one percent reward for a 100 percent effort and it’s going to sit uncomfortable.”

“You said you hoped they understood but the unions don’t, do they?” Garraway asked.

“The unions don’t understand they think it’s pitiful and I wonder if any of your former colleagues that you worked with have been in touch, have you talked to them?

“Have you got any nursing friends? Are you still in touch with that side of it to know what that reality must feel like for them?”

“I’ve literally just been speaking to one of them on the phone and via WhatsApp just a few moments ago,” Dorries replied.

“It was important for us that the NHS did receive a pay rise and I really hope that nurses understand that protecting people’s jobs, people’s livelihoods, continuing with the furlough scheme, continuing to keep people in work has to be our priority coming out of a pandemic.”

Garraway continued: “What we can predict is there’s trouble ahead not just with the economy but with the health service and particularly in your area in terms of mental health and provision in the community.

“Where you surprised and disappointed not to see any sort of social care put into place by this budget because that is going to be really important for all the areas, isn’t it?”

“The reason why I’m here today is actually to talk about the £79million that we’ve announced this morning to go into children’s mental health as part of the £500million we mentioned in the spending review on top of the £2.3billion we’re investing in mental health year-on-year.

“The announcement we made this morning is to specifically help children and young people who have been affected by the pandemic.”

Garraway interjected: “It’s much bigger than that though you know that and it’s great, well done.

“But it’s much bigger than that it’s not just related to that although it’s a very worthy cause it’s across the bond mental health problems for many areas of society and social care failings is something this Government committed to sorting out at the very beginning.”

“Those discussions are taking place and that is a priority also,” the Health Minister replied.

Kate Garraway opens up on impact of Derek’s illness in heart-wrenching ITV documentary https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-opens-up-on-impact-of-dereks-illness-in-heart-wrenching-itv-documentary/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-opens-up-on-impact-of-dereks-illness-in-heart-wrenching-itv-documentary/#respond Thu, 04 Mar 2021 17:59:21 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-opens-up-on-impact-of-dereks-illness-in-heart-wrenching-itv-documentary/

Kate, 53, was left heartbroken last March when her husband Derek, 53, was admitted to hospital after contracting coronavirus. Since then, the father-of-two has remained in a coma and although he’s made small steps with his recovery, the doctors are still unsure as to the full extent of the damage the illness has had on his body. The journalist has provided fans and Good Morning Britain viewers with updates on her spouse’s condition frequently on the show but in a new ITV documentary, she will speak candidly about the devastating toll the last year has had on her and the couple’s children.

The one-off special, entitled Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, will see the presenter discussing the events of 2020 and beyond.

A description for the show reads that the presenter will give: “An unflinching account of the profound effects on her family and on others.”

A journalist in her professional career, the mother-of-two will also talk about the longer-term effects of COVID-19 and what this means for people who have recovered after admission to hospital.

“As Kate lays bare in the film, her family, along with many others who have suffered the effects of the virus, is now facing the reality of adjusting to a very different way of life to the one they lived before the pandemic hit,” the description continued.

Kevin Lygo, managing director of media and entertainment at ITV has also offered viewers an insight into what to expect from the documentary.

Teasing the network’s Spring coverage, Kevin said: “Also announced as part of the schedule is a special one-off film titled Kate Garraway: Finding Derek.

“[It] will offer viewers an intimate insight into coping with the impact of COVID-19 as her husband Derek Draper remains seriously ill a year on from contracting the virus,” he continued.

Taking to Twitter, some fans have already reacted to the news, with one writing: “Brave and dignified throughout, we love Kate Garraway.”

As recently as Thursday morning, the mother-of-two opened up about not being able to see her husband during the current UK lockdown.

“We’re not used to not having relatives at the bedside, and I think that added dimension to it, for you, and all the relatives that it is just, just horrible,” he continued.

“So my heart really goes out to you,” Dr Down told the presenter.

The last time Kate was able to see her husband in ICU was during the Christmas period when the couple’s children were reunited with their father for the first time since he was admitted to hospital in March.

As well as featuring in a new ITV documentary, the mother-of-two will also be publishing a book about her family’s ordeal later in the Spring.

Entitled, The Power of Hope, Kate is hoping by talking about her own experience, she will be able to help others in a similar position.

The journalist said back in January: “I’ve been taking time to gather myself and focus like everyone else on getting through this latest lockdown.

“The pandemic is far from over and so is Derek’s journey but I have decided to share our story and what’s helping to keep me going, as we all try to work out what our new futures will look like.

“I am really hoping that it will help you with all that you are going through,” she wrote on her official Instagram page.

Kate Garraway heartbreak: GMB star ‘lives day-to-day on knife edge’ over Derek’s recovery https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-heartbreak-gmb-star-lives-day-to-day-on-knife-edge-over-dereks-recovery/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-heartbreak-gmb-star-lives-day-to-day-on-knife-edge-over-dereks-recovery/#respond Fri, 09 Oct 2020 01:10:17 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-heartbreak-gmb-star-lives-day-to-day-on-knife-edge-over-dereks-recovery/

Kate Garraway, 53, has spoken about her Derek’s condition several times on Good Morning Britain, having returned to her post back in July. The ITV presenter’s 53-year-old husband is still in a coma in hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 at the end of March, with the television personality looking after the couple’s children at home. In Friday’s edition of Gardeners’ World on BBC Two, the mother-of-two opened up candidly about her heartbreak and how she has planted radish bulbs to symbolise her spouse’s growth as he continues to recover from the illness.

Speaking in particular about the radishes, which are Derek’s favourite vegetable, Kate revealed there was a great “sadness” when they sprouted and her husband “wasn’t any better.”

The presenter then decided to change tact, explaining how she and the children planted things which would “take longer to bear fruit.

“And I’d say, ‘Dad will be better by then’… And of course, now that it’s been so long, we’ve got a huge basket of bulbs,” she continued, stating how the house will be rather colourful when the father-of-two does come home.

Talking further about her reason for turning to gardening, the news anchor said: “When you’re living day-to-day on a knife-edge, doing something that gives you a future just helps with a sense of progress, where there is actually none from the direct situation.

“It’s been the most important space for us,” the mother-of-two said, stating the garden is a place for the family to unleash their frustrations.

The presenter also said people “can’t think of short-term in a garden,” stating growing produce or flowers in an “investment for the future”.

Kate explained how she and the children continued to plant things as they have to have hope one day Derek will see how their hard work has paid off.

Speaking about being separated from her spouse, the mother-of-two said she would FaceTime him whilst in the garden, regardless of whether he could hear her or not.

“It’s obviously been an odd year for the world, and very directly, personally for me,” the mother-of-two concluded.

“Wonderful words as we brace ourselves for another week in these grim times,” she added, before telling her followers she would be on hand to man the Good Morning Britain desk over the next few days.

With Piers Morgan, 55, and Susanna Reid, 49, in the role of anchors for the show, Kate has been seen on-screen informing viewers of the latest bulletins.

Earlier this week, she explained to her co-stars her children haven’t seen their father since he was admitted to hospital six months ago.

It was revealed last month Derek had become the longest-surviving case of coronavirus reported in Britain since the pandemic began.

However, others weren’t happy with Piers’ interjection, as one added: “Once again not letting Kate speak, and then making it all about what you think. So pleased she shut you down!”

“With what Kate is living through right now no one should be interrupting her!!! Let her finish what she is saying, she has every right to get her FULL opinion out,” agreed a second.

Another fan praised: “@kategarraway has conducted herself with dignity throughout her husband’s illness.”

“@GMB Kate Garraway, you look fab today! You are the best example to us all, big respect & love Beating heart & prayers go to Derek, now & always. God bless,” echoed a fourth.

Kate, 53, was back on hand to present Good Morning Britain, just days after the news broke her husband Derek, 53, had become the longest case of coronavirus in Britain. The television star’s spouse remains in intensive care after being put into a coma to try and suppress the disease earlier this year. With the number of COVID cases starting to rise across the country, the newsreader made a plea to those watching the ITV show at home to follow the rules as they don’t know the “devastation” the illness can cause.

Following a discussion with Dr Hilary Jones, 67, on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s, 55, latest press conference, Kate said: “Derek’s mum and dad haven’t been able to see him.”

Fighting back the tears, she added: “I think if they can go six months without giving a hug to their son – making me feel emotional – who is so desperately ill, then the rest of us can make it through.

“I have huge sympathy with people who are fed up with it.

“I think if you haven’t been directly affected by it, you haven’t seen the devastation but your life has been devastated; your livelihood, your ability to feel a sense of joy then, of course, you’re going to feel frustrated.

“But it does make me tempted to show a picture of Derek in his current state and say you don’t want this in your life,” the presenter continued, issuing the warning to viewers.
