Writer/director Alex Garland left a huge mark with his 2015 directorial debut Ex Machina and sliced his way through our psyches in a much different way with this year’s Annihilation. Last month, we heard he would be following that up with a new science fiction TV series for FX. Now the cable channel has officially ordered a pilot, and we know the show is called Devs. Read on to learn some plot details about Garland’s new sci-fi show.

Deadline reports that FX has commissioned a pilot for Devs, which Garland wrote and will direct. Here’s their description for the new show, which is being described as a “tech thriller”:

In Devs, a young computer engineer, Lily, investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, which she believes is behind the disappearance of her boyfriend.

Garland previously stated that this show would have more in common with Never Let Me Go (which he wrote) or Ex Machina than with the more hallucinogenic Annihilation, and after reading that breakdown, I’m getting a very Ex Machina vibe. That film centered on an enigmatic creator of a cutting-edge tech company that’s responsible for some sketchy shit, and it seems as if Garland is using a similar framework here.

This also sounds like much more of a fast-paced thriller than anything Garland has handled before, which is exciting. And while that premise may seem traditional on paper, Garland’s previous work proves that he’s rarely’s content to work on a project that’s straight down the middle. He tends to fold cerebral, haunting messages into his work, and I expect Devs to be a bit more challenging than its description indicates.

We know Garland will write and direct the show’s pilot, but will he have time to helm every episode of the series (assuming it gets picked up)? In an interview with Fandango, Garland explained that Devs would be an eight-part show and that while he’d like to direct each part, that’s still up in the air. “It’s already written [and] my plan at the moment is to direct the eight episodes, but for practical reasons that might not be possible,” he said.

Alex Garland only has two feature films under his belt as a director, but he’s quickly become one of the most exciting science-fiction filmmakers working today. And with early buzz for his upcoming film Annihilation suggesting that his directorial debut Ex Machina was no fluke, all eyes are on what Garland will do next.

It turns out, he’ll be doing much of the same — but this time, it’s on TV.

Garland appears to operate by the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy. The filmmaker rose to fame as the screenwriter of several acclaimed sci-fi films, including 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go, before making the leap to the director’s chair with Ex Machina in 2015. Not content with a straightforward sci-fi thriller, Garland’s stories more often veer toward cerebral and challenging.

Now, Garland is planning to bring that fixation on the humanistic side of sci-fi to TV. Garland will be creating an eight-part sci-fi TV series for FX, Garland revealed to Fandango:

“The next project, provided it happens – hopefully we’re gonna shoot it later this year – [and it’s] an eight-part television series for FX. It’s a sort of science fiction, but it’s a much more technology based sci fi whereas Annihilation is a more hallucinogenic form of sci fi and more fantastical form of sci fi.

This is slightly more in common with projects I’ve worked on like Ex Machina or Never Let Me Go, which are taking something about our world now – not our world in the future, but our world as it is right now – and then drawing sort of inferences and conclusions from it.”

In 2017, Garland signed a deal with FX to create new television projects. This untitled eight-part series will be his first collaboration with the network.

Garland didn’t offer any more details about the project, but he did tell Fandango, “It’s already written [and] my plan at the moment is to direct the eight episodes, but for practical reasons that might not be possible.”

At first glance, Ex Machina and Never Let Me Go don’t have too much in common. Ex Machina is a cold, chilling sci-fi thriller that blurs the line between humanity and artificial intelligence. Never Let Me Go is a distressing coming-of-age film about clones whose sole reasons for existence are as expendable organ donors. But they deal with a similar question: What does it mean to be human?

It’s an intriguing premise for a sci-fi series, especially for a network that doesn’t shy away from ambitious, boundary-pushing series. FX has arguably the best current slate of TV shows on cable TV, ranging from trippy superhero series like Legion, surreal comedies like Atlanta, and powerful character vehicles like Fargo. An Alex Garland sci-fi series exploring the meaning of humanity is a perfect match with the network.

Some of the best news to come out of this year’s CinemaCon is that Alex Garland‘s new science fiction movie Annihilation looks excellent. However, it was accompanied by some bad news: the adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer‘s novel has been delayed to an unspecified date in 2018. Still, the next film from the director of Ex Machina will surely be worth the wait, especially since VanderMeer himself has seen a cut of the movie and has some very nice (and very intriguing) things to say about it.

For those of you unfamiliar with the novel, Annihilation follows a group of four women (a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor, all unnamed) on an expedition into “Area X.” What is Area X? The book doesn’t offer a concrete answer. It’s a mysterious place cut off from the rest of the world where…well, let’s just say weird stuff tends to happen. This is the 12th expedition and the previous 11 expeditions all had a really bad time. Honestly, saying much more than that would be saying too much, but I will add that things go terribly wrong.

VanderMeer was recently a guest on The Ringer’s The Watch podcast (via The Film Stage), where he spoke about working with Garland. Or rather, he spoke about not working with Garland, as the filmmaker kept him in the loop but wasn’t being precious about the adaptation process:

The first thing I realized is that even though Alex Garland says he’s not an auteur, he is an auteur. So my expectation was to not have anything to do with the movie and that’s the actual fact. He wrote the script and he was kind enough to keep me in the loop during every part of the process, but that wasn’t for me to put my two cents in, basically. It was just so I would know what was going on.

And while the film differs from the novel, VanderMeer seems impressed by what Garland has accomplished:

It’s actually more surreal than the novel. There are a couple places where I was like, “I might need an anchor here.” The ending is so mind-blowing and in some ways different from the book that it seems to be the kind of ending that, like 2001 or something like that, people will be talking about around the watercooler for years… Visually, it’s amazing. I must say that and that’s all I probably should say.

While Annihilation sounds like a straightforward enough movie on paper (an expedition goes wrong in an weird, possibly alien world), the novel feels like a tough nut to crack. It’s deliberately vague, wringing an unsettling tone and tension from what you do not know and what you cannot see. As a book reader, I’m especially curious to see how Garland has re-imagined the ending, especially since VanderMeer compares it to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

VanderMeer also took to Facebook to share his thoughts on the movie and his adjectives will probably please horror and science fiction fans:

I’m not really sure what I’m allowed to say about it or not say about it, so I’ll keep it simple…I’m still composing my thoughts and feelings about it. I can tell you it’s mind-blowing, surreal, extremely beautiful, extremely horrific, and it was so tense that our bodies felt sore and beat-up afterwards.

The film stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, and Gina Rodriguez as the four women on the expedition, with Ex Machina veteran Oscar Isaac playing Portman’s husband in scenes set outside of Area X. The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but let’s go ahead and pencil it in as one of our most anticipated movies of 2018.
