He continued: “But the truth is, especially for garden designers,

“They’re so busy with their clients’ gardens, they often don’t have time to look after their own.”

Introducing his Gardeners’ World guest Monty added: “That was the case for many years for Nick.

“However, the events of the past year meant that for the first time in ages, he could turn his skills to his own garden.”

RELATED STORIES

For its season-opening trip to the Garden of Eden, Syfy’s Wynonna Earp gave the iconic location the cold shoulder — foregoing flora and fauna for a frigid tundra that seemingly stretched to the horizon.

“It was literally called Blizzard Lake — a body of water that had frozen,” series lead Melanie Scrofano told TVLine of the location shoot at Albertina Farms, south of Calgary, which spanned the season’s first two episodes. “So every time I ran on it, I was, like, listening for cracks, you know? I was so scared!”

The lake literally lived up to its name when, for the climactic moment in which Wynonna, Doc and Waverly scrambled to find an exit, a blizzard blasted the screen, amping up the end-of-world excitement.

“Oh, my God, the timing was incredible,” Scrofano raved. “We had actually shot that sequence and then we had to turn around [the cameras], and then it f–ing starts to blizzard and we’re like, ‘Well, this doesn’t match.’ So then we had to go back and shoot the first part again. But it was incredible because thematically it felt like the Garden was trying to work its magic on us. It was the type of thing you cannot plan and you cannot buy.”

Wynonna Earp Frozen LakeAlas, no magic was on hand to keep the cast anything close to warm as they filmed on a frozen lake. Now in its fourth season of production in Alberta, Canada, “It was the most excruciatingly painful cold I think we had experienced on the show,” Scrofano shared.

Storyline-wise, though the Garden’s chills and thrills may be behind them, Wynonna and Doc (played by Tom Rozon) returned home to find that life in Purgatory took a gnarly turn for the lawless during their fast-passing 18-plus months in that other realm. What will be their first step in processing this new world order?

“I think it’s safe to say alcohol,” Scrofano deadpanned. “I’m sort of joking, but I’m sort of serious.” Then turning decidedly serious, she offered that “Wynonna doesn’t have her [supernaturally powered] gun, but now she has Doc — and now he has her — so just to know that each other are safe, I think, will give them both strength to face whatever is coming up.”

Garden News: A look of shear delight https://briefnews.eu/garden-news-a-look-of-shear-delight/ https://briefnews.eu/garden-news-a-look-of-shear-delight/#respond Sun, 23 Sep 2018 06:29:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/garden-news-a-look-of-shear-delight/

These living and breathing boundary structures offer shelter to countless forms of wildlife as well as helping to reduce the impact of air pollution in the surrounding area and when strong winds blow, they are unlikely to keel over as air filters through the numerous gaps.

And of course, the crisp, clean lines of a newly cut hedge smarten the appearance of any garden.

Depending on which variety of plant the hedge is comprised of will determine when it should be cut and whether it needs just one annual prune or more regular attention.

It goes without saying that no hedge should ever be cut when birds are nesting within, in fact it is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built.

That doesn’t mean you can’t prune a hedge in spring or early summer but always check for nests before starting.

It’s currently a little too late to prune conifers such as the commonly grown Leyland cypress which is best trimmed in August but it is still safe to sharpen the outlines of hedges that include yew, holly, Griselinia, Thuja plicata and hawthorn.

This can be done either manually with hand shears or with electric or battery powered hedge cutters.

Always take the precaution of wearing safety glasses to protect your eyes from the myriad small particles that fire out in all directions when hedge-cutting is under way. Sturdy footwear and a well-positioned ladder are also a must.

For lengthy jobs, ear protectors should be worn.

A small garden may not warrant the use of a full-sized hedge cutter or indeed have space to store one but an ingenious little gadget from Stihl provides gardeners with a lightweight, compact pruning tool that will keep shrubs and hedges in good shape, with little effort.

The HSA 25 Shrub Shears have interchanging blades that include a grass cutting blade to maintain borders and lawn edges and its Lithium-ion battery has a running time of 110 minutes.

14 surprising things you didn’t know about Olive Garden https://briefnews.eu/14-surprising-things-you-didnt-know-about-olive-garden/ https://briefnews.eu/14-surprising-things-you-didnt-know-about-olive-garden/#respond Tue, 31 Jul 2018 21:24:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/14-surprising-things-you-didnt-know-about-olive-garden/ Olive GardenSarah Schmalbruch / INSIDER

Olive Garden is a massive chain restaurant in the US, widely known for its unlimited salad and breadsticks. In less than 40 years, it’s grown from one Florida location to almost 900 stores throughout the world.

But there are many things you might not know about the chain, even if you’re a regular customer. Read on for more surprising facts about Olive Garden.

They’ve been ranked the number one Italian chain restaurant.

It has long-held the position of the top Italian-themed restaurant in America, according to Restaurant Business, with Carrabba’s consistently trailing at number two. It’s also consistently been one of the top-performing casual dining restaurants overall.

They used to share buildings with Red Lobster restaurants.

Before being sold off in 2014, Florida-based Red Lobster was a sister company to Olive Garden. There were even attempts to combine the two into one building, similar to fast food combination restaurants, but they have all since been closed due to under-performance.

The look of the original restaurant models resemble a Tuscan farmhouse.

In an effort to immerse you in the look, feel, and taste of Italy, the restaurants were modeled after a farmhouse in Chianti, Italy, according to Eater. They even offer a regional Tuscan menu in honor of the area that inspired their restaurant.

A spokesperson for Olive Garden noted that the newer prototype for the restaurants doesn’t quite fit this mold, though.

How to get rid of ants: Top tips to kill annoying insects that infest your house or garden https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-ants-top-tips-to-kill-annoying-insects-that-infest-your-house-or-garden/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-ants-top-tips-to-kill-annoying-insects-that-infest-your-house-or-garden/#respond Mon, 23 Jul 2018 20:12:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-ants-top-tips-to-kill-annoying-insects-that-infest-your-house-or-garden/

How to get rid of ants is a common query for Britons in the summer time.

There are many reported ways to get rid of the pesky insects, which can bite.

Ants can crop up in your house or your garden, but they cause havoc in either location.

What is more, the more ants you have in your garden, the more likely you are to find them in your house in winter.

So, how can you deal with these six-legged pests?

Get rid of ants in the garden

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) reveal you must destroy nests to cull the ant population.

It claims this is difficult and said: “In most situations it is best to tolerate the presence of ants.”

Website Gardening Know How claims Britons can get rid of ants in the garden with pipe tobacco.

The experts said: “To get rid of ants in yard, you can soak the tobacco in water overnight and make a tea with it.

“Discard the wet tobacco, and use gloves when handling the solution.

“Pour the liquid over the ant hills and soak them. The ants will die.”

Get rid of ants in the house

Ants in the house can be removed with white vinegar.

According to Top 10 Home Remedies, you can get rid of ants using regular sprays of the white vinegar.

The site explains that the smell of the vinegar will drive ants away.

“White vinegar will also send an eviction notice to ants on your premises. They cannot bear its strong smell.

“In addition, the smell masks their scent trails, making them lose their direction.”

Wasps are another major problem when it comes to UK homes.

How to get rid of wasps is a common question, therefore.

However, experts suggest peppermint oil might help.

According to designer and lifestyle expert P. Allen Smith, peppermint oil will deter wasps from your home.

Princess Eugenie: Royal wears quirky 'love' hat for Queen’s garden party https://briefnews.eu/princess-eugenie-royal-wears-quirky-love-hat-for-queens-garden-party/ https://briefnews.eu/princess-eugenie-royal-wears-quirky-love-hat-for-queens-garden-party/#respond Thu, 31 May 2018 23:05:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/princess-eugenie-royal-wears-quirky-love-hat-for-queens-garden-party/

Princess Eugenie attended a garden party today thrown by her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, at Buckingham Palace.

Never one to shy away from a daring hat design, the princess wore a boater-style hat emblazoned with the word “love”.

The 28-year-old was at Buckingham Palace for one of the Queen’s famed garden parties, which also saw her cousin, Prince William, 35, in attendance.

Eugenie might have love on her brain as she is set to marry fiance Jack Brooksbank later this year.

The two, who have been together for eight years, will marry at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, this October – the same venue Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials took place.

Laughing and chatting with her cousin the Duke of Cambridge, Eugenie kept things demure in a navy, knee-length dress in a cotton material.

Belted at the waist, the navy dress  off her slimmed down figure, with button detailing running down to just below the waist.

Understated yet elegant, the dress had large, 3/4 length turned up sleeves, with the princess choosing to unbutton the top few buttons of the dress.

With very little other detailing the unusual hat added a playful twist to the more monotone ensemble.

Also navy blue in colour the playful boat hat displayed the word “love” in what appears to be beads. Navy blue mesh covered the princess’ eyes.

To complement the look, Eugenie wore minimal makeup and wore her flame-red hair loose, adding a more relaxed element to her garden-party ensemble.

On her left hand,  the stunning coral-coloured engagement ring given to her by Brooksbank, very smilier to that of her mother, Sarah Ferguson Duchess of York, 58.

Keeping the focus on her stunning rock of an engagement ring she accessorised with simple, gold drop-down earrings.

Eugenie finished off the elegant all-navy ensemble with a classic pair of navy blue pointed toe stilettos.

By her side her cousin William looked dashing in a coat and tails, finished off by top hat and umbrella.

The only royal to have a social media presence, Eugenie posted another elegant look from Buckingham Palace gardens to her Instagram account yesterday.

Wearing a white floaty dress with striking floral prints, the princess captioned the image: “So lovely meeting the incredible Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award achievers and their families @dofeuk. In my next life looks like I could be a comedian.”

Made of a delicate fabric, the wraparound dress floated in the breeze as Eugenie laughed and joked with the crows gathered in Buckingham Palace gardens.

The Princess was stepping in for her grandfather, Prince Philip, who has retired from public duties despite this being his namesake project.

Princess Eugenie is said to allowed social media accounts as she is not a “working royal”, which is illustrated by the fact they are not listed on the royal.uk website.

Ex-burglar reveals the ONE secret about your garden that will keep YOUR home safe https://briefnews.eu/ex-burglar-reveals-the-one-secret-about-your-garden-that-will-keep-your-home-safe/ https://briefnews.eu/ex-burglar-reveals-the-one-secret-about-your-garden-that-will-keep-your-home-safe/#respond Thu, 31 May 2018 15:56:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ex-burglar-reveals-the-one-secret-about-your-garden-that-will-keep-your-home-safe/

Britons are starting to head off on their summer holidays, leaving behind empty gardens leading to homes full of valuable possessions.

Gardens can often be the place thieves begin their break-ins, providing potential hiding spots and clues as to the home-occupier’s whereabouts.

According to online services marketplace Bark.com, crime statistics show burglary has increased by nine per cent in the UK after 2017.

In a report written by ex-offenders, it has been revealed that steps as simple as keeping on top of your gardening can deter potential home invaders.

If the lawn is freshly mowed and weed-free, then burglars will question whether a house is in fact vacant.

Burglars will watch houses for a few days to see patterns of the occupants so it’s a good idea to hire a gardener to come around each week, the ex-burglars advised. Long grass and possibly litter or junk mail spilling out of your letterbox are all signs that your house is not occupied – the perfect target for thieves.

If you plan on being away for more than a couple of days, ask a neighbour or friend to clear away your junk mail, or even have your mail directed to a post office of different address while you’re away.

Giving the appearance of an occupied house and garden, automatic timers for garden lighting can also be used to deter thieves.

This will confused burglars and give the illusion you are still at home, keeping them at bay.

Leaving a interior light on seen from your garden will also help burgle-proof your garden and home. If someone you know is keeping an eye on your property, possibly feeding your pets, ask them to move blinds up and down to change the exterior appearance of the home.

Keeping garden bushes, trees and shrubbery maintained will also reduce the amount of hiding spots potentially used by thieves. Ladders, chairs and tables should also all be secured or removed, as thieves can use these to help reach second story windows.

Along with preventative measures for keeping your garden burglar-free, more proactive measures can be put in place to make it a thief-free zone.

Try planting dense, thorny bushes that are panful to touch, climb over or push through. Such plants include blackthorn, holly, hawthorn and gorse.

Garden fences can also be reinforced to be more burglar-repellant, by simply adding a spiked or thorny rose bush-adorned trellis to the top of fencing of at least 20cm height.

Despite opting for height in the back garden, when it comes to front gardens it is better to keep hedges, bushes and fences low, so intruders can be easily spotted by neighbours and passers by.

On top of these extra safety methods to keeping your garden, and consequentially home, burglar free, make sure all back gates are locked with a padlock and use clutch-head screws to attach the gate’s bolts – so they are not easily unscrewed.

Also make sure your gate can’t be lifted off its hinges and consider using gravel to pave your garden, as gravel is noisy and will draw attention to burglars.

The report by Bark.com also revealed the tips for keeping the interiors of your home safe this summer.

Compiled by the same ex-convicts, the comprehensive list includes surprising tips such as having a recording of a dog barking and those involving social media.

For Britons looking to sell their homes, another list of simple tips can ensure your property comes out top with potential buyers.
