T-Mobile won the lion’s share of spectrum licenses in the latest Federal Communications Commission auction, helping it fill rural network gaps that evoked comparisons to Swiss cheese. T-Mobile’s winning bids totaled $ 304.3 million, letting it obtain 7,156 licenses out of 7,872 that were sold, the FCC announced yesterday.

T-Mobile’s licenses are spread across 2,724 counties (out of 3,143 total in the US). The second-highest bidder in dollar terms was PTI Pacifica, which spent $ 17.7 million on nine licenses in five counties. “With most of the available spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band located in rural areas, this auction provides vital spectrum resources to support wireless services in rural communities,” the FCC said.

The auction provided up to three blocks of spectrum, totaling 117.5MHz in each county. In terms of the number of licenses won, the second-place finisher was the North American Catholic Educational Programming Fund. Its winning bids totaled $ 7.8 million and cover 107 licenses in 84 counties.

THE canteen of Stockholm University could scarcely be more Swedish. Young blond students sip coffee and tap away on Macs. In room 3.89, an outpost of the campus, is another, newer Sweden. Refugees, all of them teachers, from lands far to the south and east are preparing for the classrooms of their new home. Several keep their coats on as Khadije Obeid takes them through the basics of the curriculum and shows a YouTube clip about education law. “In Syria the teacher has much authority,” says Samer, an English teacher, as he raises his hand above his head. “Here he is equal to the students,” he adds as he lowers it.

The ten women and seven men are on a “fast-track” programme for refugees with experience in occupations where labour is short. As well as learning Swedish, they get 26 weeks of daily classes, teaching practice and mentoring.   • Gap Inc.’s sales grew in the fourth quarter thanks to strong sales at its Old Navy brand.
  • Old Navy has become the parent company’s saving grace. While Gap Inc. has struggled in recent years, Old Navy has seen positive same-store sales growth for the past five years.
  • The store has a cult following of price-conscious customers who choose it over Gap because of its lower prices.

Old Navy is Gap’s saving grace.

In Gap Inc.’s fourth-quarter earnings, reported Thursday, same-store sales were up 5% overall at Gap Inc. This growth was driven by Old Navy, which was up 9% in the quarter. The company’s namesake brand, on the other hand, showed flat growth compared to the year before.

Old Navy has become Gap Inc.’s sweet spot. While its parent company has struggled in recent years, Old Navy has seen positive same-store sales growth for the past five years.

The growth at Old Navy is not specific to any one section of the store. “Old Navy had a super strong fourth quarter,” Gap Inc CEO Art Peck said on the earnings call. “It was very diversified and was not relying on any one horse to pull the cart.”

We visited a Gap and an Old Navy store in one of New York’s busiest shopping areas — Herald Square — on a rainy Thursday afternoon last May, and we saw firsthand why Old Navy is resonating well with customers:

We timed our visit to Old Navy with the start of Memorial Day weekend sales. The first thing that struck us was the amount of clothing and accessories that were on sale.

The store was awash with signs offering discounts ranging from 20% to 60% off.  

There were also several clearance sections around the store.

Even before discounts, however, Old Navy was still much cheaper than Gap.

A basic women’s cardigan cost $ 24.94 at Old Navy. At Gap, it was $ 49.95 (on sale for $ 25 with the Memorial Day weekend discount).
