Moreover, there’s still the question of some 90 tonnes of gold to be smuggled out along with the surviving crew. Production is currently underway in Milan, but viewers have already raised their concerns about whether showrunner Álex Pina will be able to deliver the goods in Part Five. One fan took to Reddit to speculate if the Professor actually has contingencies in place to spring his team from the Bank of Spain, or if he’s been making things up as he goes along. Redditor purplerainbowsrule posted: “So many characters in Parts 3 and 4 have said that melting the 90 tons of gold is the only way the team are going to escape the bank, but what is the importance of this?”
In the early 1970s, though, it was a different place with a different vibe, and it’s where I lived. On a block of duplexes, bookended by apartment buildings right on the big thoroughfare of Utica Avenue. Record stores where I’d buy my records, butcher stores where I’d go buy meat for dinner and try not to stare too much at the tattooed arms of Holocaust survivors.
I was 9 years old and, in general, everything was OK. I had started to lift weights; in fact, this was THE year I had started lifting weights, making manifest a certain kind of kiddie machismo. This included dirt-lot scuffles, slap boxing for fun and very much the kind of stuff I did not do at my tony elementary school outside the neighborhood.
In December 1971, it snowed like mad. Booted and suited, we — me and three of my buddies, the Brothers Etienne — pulled each other up and down the sidewalk on a sled until fatigue set in.
“Sledding?” The 17-year-old slapped me in the face, spinning me around and down to the snow.
“Too bad we don’t have a hill,” we moaned. With the Rockwellesque prospect of snowy-day delights like sledding down hills filling our heads, we remembered the small park that sat on the other side of Utica. It was closer to the projects than we usually went but it had hills, snow on those hills and probably, this close after the snows, a paucity of dog poop, ever a New York hazard pre-Giuiliani, whose pooper-scooper laws changed what had been a long-running and smelly city gag.
“Let’s go to the park.” It was further than we usually went, and we broke for a bit to tell our parents where we were going. A park, a sled, snow, kids. They signed off immediately, and off we went.
One sled, four of us, two comfortably fitting on the sled, and it was a blast. Up the hill, bombed down the hill, back down, cutting curved lines around trees. Yeah, it was a blast. So much of a blast that when we saw other people enter the park, we didn’t take much notice. It was winter, it was a park. Nothing strange at all.
What was strange was about 14 of them, a mix of Dominican teenagers, suddenly standing at the top of the hill where two of us were waiting for the sled. Standing and looking at us.
“What’s up?”
“Huh?” OK. Now the radar was turned on. They were way too close for comfort, and they didn’t look comfortable, which made us very uncomfortable.
They formed a loose semi-circle around us, and now mostly me since I had spoken first. The hill was at my back.
“I said, ‘WHAT’S UP?’ ” He was about 17 years old, I would have guessed. I have no idea how tall since, at 9 years old, there were a lot of people taller than me.
“Just sledding.” My two friends down the hill who had grown up in Port-Au-Prince knew enough at this point to stay down the hill. Smart move.
They formed a loose semi-circle around us, and now mostly me since I had spoken first. The hill was at my back. The 17-year-old nudged a kid closer to my age forward. He was maybe 11, though physically someone I could have easily taken under different circumstances. All part of an arithmetic I did in my head. I wasn’t sure what they wanted, but the way it was shaping up, I was guessing me and the nudged kid were going to fight.
“Sledding?” The 17-year-old slapped me in the face, spinning me around and down to the snow. I scrambled back to my feet, not wanting to get whatever was coming to me without being able to use my legs to run if there was a chance. When I stood, the 11-year-old was in front of me, watching me, as the 17-year-old hissed, “Say it again.”
I stood, saying nothing. The 17-year-old walked toward me, packing ice and snow into a tight ball about the size of a softball. He handed it to the 11-year-old, who mashed it into my face. I started to raise my fist and, as I did, everyone leaned in a little. Everyone but the 11-year-old in front of me. He just stood and watched me. Not angry. Not not-angry. Affectless, in front of me and packing another snowball.
I lowered my fist; they leaned back, and I just looked at him. Into his eyes. This moment was his and mine, and I’d not let him off the hook and wanted it known that as long as this wrong was happening to me, I’d be witnessing, remembering. The second iceball, because at this point it was more ice than snow, hit and I wiped my face. This happened two more times before the 17-year-old said, “Let’s go” and just as quickly as they showed, they left.
The two of us on the hilltop walked down to join the other two. We walked back, across Utica in silence.
Six months later, my family moved out of Crown Heights and over to Flatbush. Sixteen years later, I sort of figured out that I had probably been a reprisal since we weren’t robbed. For what? Probably always a good question, even if in this instance it would remain unanswered.
And my takeaway? I guess that sometimes it rains on the just and the unjust alike. Cold comfort, though, on a cold day in December.

FSB officers will spend 24 years in a high-security prison for being a member of a gang of rogue law enforcers, which for years terrorized businessmen and guest workers in Russia’s Tyumen, killing at least ten.
Four officers from the FSB (Federal Security Service) and the police put together a gang to lure cash from shady local businessmen, involved in money laundering, instead of arresting them.
The men, who were assigned to protect the law, resorted to the most violent and heinous crimes in pursuit of their goal. The so-called “Killer gang from the FSB,” which was active in the Siberian city between 2008 and 2016, has the blood of at least ten people on their hands.
The scheme they used was cunning and merciless. The dirty law enforcers sent businessmen anonymous threats and then offered their protection services. In order to show off the results of their work to the clients, they abducted and murdered guest workers from Central Asia, whom they dressed in fancy suits to look like serious menacing people.

The gang also didn’t shy away from a violent robbery. Shortly before New Year holidays in 2008, they broke into the home of one uncooperative entrepreneur to snatch his cash, gold, and expensive watches. The property owner was put in a car, taken to the woods and shot dead there.
In 2015 they murdered two taxi drivers – just because they needed vehicles to be used in their future crimes.

The rogue officers were arrested early last year after being betrayed by one of their own members, who apparently experienced a pang of guilt. After the killing of another migrant, FSB lieutenant, Aleksey Korotkov, anonymously tipped his colleagues, the honest ones, on the location of the body.
The uncovering of the gang’s activities caused a major uproar and saw several high-profile firings in the Tumen law enforcement, which included the head of the local FSB branch.
Korotkov became the first gang member to be sentenced in the shocking case. On Wednesday, a military court in Yekaterinburg handed him 24 years in a maximum security prison and a fine of 500,000 rubles ($ 7,500). The man was also deprived of his lieutenant rank.
The former officer was found guilty of seven murders as well as theft, robbery, carjacking, fraud, and hooliganism. He initially faced life in prison but received a milder sentence due to full repentance and cooperation with the investigators.
In his final word at the court, Korotkov asked the relatives and friends of his victims to forgive him, saying: “I fully acknowledge my actions and the consequences I’ll face.”
His other accomplice, Aleksandr Kobylin, who was a martial arts trainer for the FBS officers, is currently awaiting his trial.
The gang’s leader, FSB sniper, Sergey Gilev, committed suicide in a pre-dentation facility by cutting his own throat. Former policeman, Sergey Zazuliya, remains the only dirty cop still at large.

All American went into its winter hiatus with one very big win and one very big loss.
Wednesday’s fall finale brought a number of simmering storylines to a boil, resulting in major life changes for Spencer — and everyone in his orbit, for that matter. Let’s recap what went down in the eventful hour:
THE GANG’S ALL HERE | Much of this week’s episode focuses on Shawn and Coop’s continued involvement with Crenshaw’s gangs, a situation that’s been getting increasingly sticky for the teens all season. One morning, while Shawn is making breakfast for his daughter, gang member Tyrone shows up at his door, and he gives Shawn and Coop a worrying ultimatum: They either ride with Tyrone from here on out, or they’re going to be in serious danger.
Coach Baker’s wife, Laura, finally gets to flex her legal skills in this episode, and she offers to get Coop and Shawn the protection they need — provided that Shawn cooperates with Laura’s team and rats out Tyrone to the D.A., who has been looking for intel on Tyrone for quite some time. Shawn is adamant that he’s not going to snitch on any gang member; if he’s going to get out of the gang life, he’ll find a way to do it himself.
Later, Shawn eventually does come up with an exit strategy. He meets with Tyrone the following day and hands over a backpack full of cash — all of the money that Shawn has been squirreling away from previous jobs and visits to Alvin’s barbershop. He’s ready to give himself and his daughter a fresh start down in Louisiana, and he’s hoping he can buy his way out of the gang life… and, much to Shawn’s surprise, Tyrone accepts the offer. After realizing just how much dough Shawn is willing to fork over, Tyrone dismisses Shawn from his duties — but, because he’s also a jerk, he informs Shawn that he “overpaid” for his ticket to Louisiana. “You ain’t worth that much, Shawn Scott,” Tyrone says before driving off.
But Shawn’s happy ending is ultimately too good to be true. Just as he’s arriving back at his apartment, giddily telling Coop over the phone how thrilled he is to be getting a fresh start, Shawn is shot in the chest by a rival gang member. He collapses as the shooter drives off, then dies on the sidewalk. (It’s a testament to All American‘s writers, and Shawn’s portrayer, Jay Reeves, that I was ultimately heartbroken to see Shawn’s story end this way.)
Coop is understandably wrecked over Shawn’s death; after all, she was on the phone with him when he died, and she heard the gunshots loud and clear over the line. Patience, on the other hand, is admittedly glad that Shawn’s death is getting Coop out of the gang world for good… until Coop informs her that that part of her life isn’t over just yet.
Elsewhere in the hour…
* Despite pressure from his superiors, Coach Baker refuses to let Asher play in the big homecoming game against Malibu — and Asher retaliates by revealing Beverly High’s entire playbook to one of the Malibu players. Unsurprisingly, when it comes time for the teams to face off, the game begins as a bloodbath for Beverly. Malibu’s defense is all over the field, blocking Beverly’s players as if they know exactly what Beverly is trying to do with the ball… because they do know what Beverly is trying to do with the ball.
Coach Baker and Spencer have a desperate brainstorm during halftime, and they decide to enlist Spencer’s Crenshaw friend, Chris, for help coming up with new plays. With assistance from Chris (and that fancy new Windows tablet that the show was very clearly advertising!), Beverly High blindsides Malibu with their plays in the second half, and Beverly emerges victorious, clinching the division title. But after watching Asher exchange a nod with one of Malibu’s players, Jordan realizes that Asher is the one who gave Beverly’s playbook to Malibu, and he threatens to have Asher taken off the team completely for what he’s done. (Asher, meanwhile, is sent to live with his mom for the foreseeable future, because his dad no longer finds him useful now that he’s not playing football. Yikes.)
* Despite their pledge to only remain friends for the time being, Leila and Spencer give in to their mutual attraction and sleep together after the homecoming game. Leila tells Spencer that it’s cool if he wants to forget the whole thing happened and just go back to being acquaintances, but Spencer has the opposite idea. He’s tired of pushing down his feelings for Leila, and he’s ready to pursue a relationship with her. (Leila responds by kissing him and dropping the sheets she had wrapped around her body, so let’s assume they’re on the same page about all that.)
* After the football game, Malibu’s head coach — who we already know loves to make Coach Baker miserable — takes Spencer aside and reveals that he used to know Spencer’s father. Spencer is skeptical at first, informing the coach that his father abandoned him six years ago… but the coach knew Spencer’s father to be a very good guy, and he suspiciously tells Spencer that his dad wouldn’t have left if he didn’t have a good reason. “And Billy Baker?” the coach continues. “That man will do whatever it takes to get what he wants.”
* Speaking of Coach Baker, he finds himself in a bit of a pickle at the end of the episode. When Beverly High’s sports committee receives an anonymous tip that one of the football players has violated the drug policy, Coach Baker tells all of his players that they need to be drug-tested immediately. But there’s a problem: Jordan was the one who did drugs when he got high the previous night, and he regretfully tells his father that he’s going to fail the drug test if he takes it. Later, during a brief moment when no one is manning the table lined with urine samples, Coach Baker walks over to it and swaps out his son’s sample for his own.

A Ukrainian parliament hearing on a high-profile murder became heated after the prosecutor general lashed out, calling an MP barely printable names and reportedly saying “suck my c**k” after a vote of confidence.
The Rada, the Ukraine parliament, has witnessed many heated debates and quite a few fistfights. But the Tuesday session will probably be well remembered thanks to an impassioned speech by Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko, who spared no insults for people criticizing his handling of high-profile investigations.
Lutsenko, who is known for getting his job two years ago despite having no background in jurisprudence, was called to the parliament to give MPs an update on the murder of activist Katerina Gandzyuk. A vocal critic of the government in general and the law enforcement in particular, she was attacked with acid in July.
After three months of agony, she succumbed to her injuries last week, sparking outrage among Ukrainians who accused the authorities of a failure to solve the crime.
After several MPs criticized Lutsenko’s handling of the case, his nerves were apparently on the brink. He marched to the podium to give them a piece of his mind using the terms such as a “gang of scum shedding fake tears”, “collecting interests in blood” and “a young ignoramus, who spills his brain diarrhea right in this chamber” to describe his opponents and said the country cannot tolerate MPs who “do not a damn thing and only know how to babble on TV”.
He said he had enough of this and was going to resign. The parliament speaker even called for a non-binding vote. It showed that if a motion to dismiss Lutsenko were submitted, the parliament would vote against. The prosecutor, according to at least one eyewitness account, told someone in the chamber to “suck my c**k” after the vote as he was leaving for a break.
As of Wednesday, Lutsenko’s resignation was reportedly sent to his friend and patron, President Petro Poroshenko. But in Ukraine this hardly indicates an actual intention to resign. The country is to elect a new president and a new parliament next year, and losing a key ally is against the interests of Poroshenko, whose approval ratings remain in single digits despite already spending months on various publicity exercises.

Fearing the vicious Salvadoran MS-13 gang, which has plagued Long Island’s Suffolk County and threatens to spread its terror further, residents from the wealthy Hamptons area in New York are turning their homes into fortresses.
The extreme security measures include sleeping with guns, installing bulletproof windows and sometimes even luxury panic rooms.
Supermarket mogul, John Catsimatidis, told the New York Post that he sleeps with a gun underneath his pillow. “A Walther PPK/S, the same one James Bond carried,” he said.
“[My wife] Margo prefers a shotgun. Although, once, she thought she heard something, got the shotgun out and shot through the door,” he added.
Fears that the gang is spreading to the eastern tip of Long Island were bolstered by Southampton Town’s police chief Steven Skrynecki, after he stationed police with anti-terrorism gear at charity galas throughout the summer of 2017.
In April, the gang murdered four men at a soccer field in Central Islip. Three months later a Hampton Bays brothel, which was raided by police, was found to be tagged with an MS-13 sign.
The gang is “in Suffolk County. What’s an hour car ride? They are near,” an unnamed Southampton homeowner said.
Long Island contractor Chris Cosban, whose company Covert Interiors installs pricey panic rooms, told the daily: “The big thing [with homeowners] in the Hamptons is that if somebody has it, they [all] want it.”
The price for a panic room ranges from $ 25,000 to over $ 200,000 which Cosban explains with ‘a wow factor.’
“They like to brag about it,” he said. People used to open up their garages and show off their Lamborghinis, but “now they take guests to the wine bar in their safe room,” said Herman Weisberg from personal security firm Sage Intelligence.
He explained that clients look at the panic rooms as a secondary space that can double as a wine cellar or a secure room to display guns.
Some East Enders say that their wealthy neighbors are going overboard and “get more paranoid the richer they become.”

]]>The cross-border gang was busted by Customs officers in the Shenzhen metropolitan area in southeastern China. Shenzhen links Hong Kong to China’s mainland. Authorities arrested 26 people and seized their unusual equipment, which included two drones, as well as cables and motorized wheels.
“Each day, 10,000 to 15,000 mobile phones were smuggled across the border,” Chen Liang, deputy chief of the Wenjindu branch of Shenzhen’s anti-smuggling bureau, said. “As they operated 15 days a month, its monthly income reached over 10 million yuan.” Chen added that police detained the gang members on February 1 after a tip-off.
The syndicate operated for about six months, during which time they honed their scheme to perfection. The criminals used their drones to fly between two high-rise buildings on the Shenzhen side of the border and a village house on the Hong Kong side. The drones carried cables, which were then attached to motorized wheels inside two apartments. Bags were then tied to the cables, each containing up to 20 smartphones, a local government source told the South China Morning Post.
Second-hand mobile phones, mostly iPhones, worth about 500 million yuan ($ 80 million) were seized from the ‘high-tech’ smuggling ring. It is estimated that they managed to dodge about 100 million yuan in taxes with their operation. According to local media, this is probably the first case in China that involves using drones for cross-border smuggling.
