Gamescom is a loud, in-your-face, five day maelstrom of sights and sounds and videogamey things. It’s fun, but rather ill-suited for games which are not all about guns and competition and strife and WINNING something or other. Still, there are more than enough upcoming titles out there that celebrate the good things, that dazzle with their beauty, or that impress with their design or narrative. Here are a few of them.
Overland (Finji, when it’s done)
Sure, the world is ending and everything is bad. But grab a bunch of friendly strangers and some good dogs and go on a road trip. Overland is so meticulously and elegantly designed, and listening to Adam Saltsman talk about game design makes you want to just continually nod in agreement.
Mosaic (Krillbite, Summer 2019)
Mosaic is both searing criticism of the modern, capitalist grind and a celebration of life’s small wonders. Or at least I think it is? This is certainly going places.
Neo Cab (Chance Agency, 2019)
Granted, playing as the last human taxi driver in some fully automated near-future scenario does not sound too exciting at first, but thanks to some outstanding writing and characters that feel, well, human, Neo Cab just sucks you in.
Gris (Nomada Studio, December 2018)
The first time I played Gris pretty much exactly two years ago, I knew that I would love this unconditionally. I still do. You can do it as well, and soon. My game of the show, and probably my game of the year in a year that already had so many amazing games.

So yes, there will be videogames. And the videogames will be good. Everything will be alright.
]]>GAMESCOM 2018 – UPDATE THREE: The Shenmue 3 release date has been revealed.
In a pre-recorded video presented by Yu Suzuki, new footage of Shenmue 3 was showcased and when it will launch was announced.
Shenmue 3 will be out on PS4 and PCs on August 27 2017.
Koch Media, who are releasing Shenmue 3 with Deep Silver, also announced a new title for Nintendo Switch.
They revealed that Saints Row The Third will be heading to the hit hybrid console.
They also announced DLC for Kingdom Come Deliverance.
GAMESCOM 2018 – UPDATE TWO: Michel Koch, Creative Director from Square Enix, took to the Gamescom 2018 stage to reveal more on Life Is Strange 2.
Koch showcased the trailer for Life is Strange 2 and also revealed that LiS 2 will be playable at Gamescom 2018.

Earlier today at Gamescom, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang showed off its latest graphics cards, which are built on its new Turing architecture to be the company’s fastest GeForce cards ever. Moving on from teraflops, NVIDIA is now talking about GigaRays, which measure its ability to handle the ray tracing technology that will produce better lighting and effects than we’ve ever seen before. Whether you’re looking forward to a $ 1,200 RTX 2080 Ti or an $ 800 RTX 2080 (or just waiting for prices to come down) for your next gaming PC build, our video can show you the best of today’s highlights in a bit less than 14 minutes.

Nintendo Switch fans might want to get a ticket to Gamescom, because the console is going to be highlighted in a big way.
Ahead of the rumoured Nintendo Direct presentation for August, the company has revealed its lineup for Gamescom.
Taking place in Cologne, Germany, the European gaming expo runs from August 21 until August 25.
Nintendo will showcase upcoming Switch exclusives like Super Mario Party and Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
“Visitors to Nintendo’s booth at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany this year are in for a treat, as they’ll be the first to try some of the fun new minigames in Super Mario Party, as well as being able to go hands-on with other upcoming Nintendo Switch software, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and more,” Nintendo explains.
Super Mario Party is said to take the board game mode back to its roots.
According to Nintendo, there’s even a strategical element thanks to the addition of individual Dice Blocks.
The post continues: “Additional game modes, such as Toad’s Rec Room that pairs up two Nintendo Switch consoles, plus the Online Mariothon minigame gauntlet, make this one party where everyone can enjoy themselves, and visitors to Nintendo’s booth in Hall 9 can try out five of the new minigames themselves as a taster of the fun that awaits.”
And Super Mario Party isn’t the only game on show at the event.
Other playable titles are said to include…
• EA SPORTS FIFA 19
• Dark Souls: Remastered
• Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes
• DRAGON BALL FighterZ
• Starlink: Battle for Atlas
• Killer Queen Black
Nintendo has also announced plans to broadcast a series of videos live from the showfloor.
“Those who can’t attend the show in person can get a deeper look at a selection of already-announced upcoming games on Nintendo’s YouTube channel, with a series of videos recorded at its RedCube studio on the gamescom showfloor throughout the week.
“Fans can tune in to see new gameplay from a selection of games, including Super Mario Party, Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country, and DAEMON X MACHINA from Marvelous, featuring the game’s producer Kenichiro Tsukuda.”
It’s possible that more games will be revealed if the company holds a Direct conference ahead of Gamescom.
The best thing I overheard at Gamescom were lots of people telling their friends to visit hall 10.1 – because that’s where you go to play those cool indie games. Here are some noteworthy games from the show floor and a few upcoming titles that were shown in the business area.
Symmetry (Sleepless Clinic, 2018)
A spaceship crash lands on an abandoned, frozen planet. The survivors scrounge for resources to repair their base and just try to survive in this hostile environment. And then the hallucinations start… apparently, the crew is not alone. Someone, something is out there, and it’s not friendly. Symmetry impresses with its lovely, low-poly art style and its pretty cool color scheme. There’s lots of micromanagement while you order your people around, and the addition of a story sets this apart from your regular survival sim. It can also get pretty grim, but what else are you to do when one of your crewmates is dead and there’s no Matt Damon to bring you potatoes? Yummy.
Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2 (Crazy Monkey Studios, 2017)
Vinnie’s back, and he brought a friend this time. Who’s Vinnie, you ask? Oh, just your run-of-the-mill mobster, fighting other gangsters, zombies, and assorted bad guys in this action-platformer sequel to the 2015 game of the (almost) exact same name. It’s a weird mash-up of different styles, somehow jumping from 1930s mafia aesthetics to zombie apocalypse to D-Day, but it somehow works and it plays quite well. The run-and-gun mechanics with some slight platforming thrown into the mix felt incredibly juicy and polished. This one might fly under people’s radars just because it is such an odd mixture, but it’s definitely worth a look.
Unforeseen Incidents (Backwoods, 2017)
It’s all about dark secrets and deadly diseases in this classic point and click adventure. A mysterious plague is spreading, and only our hero, small-town handyman Harper Pendrell, can somehow put an end to the grisly conspiracy surrounding it. This certainly looks and feels like classic adventure gaming with some unconventional character design, which is meant to say that it looks quite promising.
Ruiner (Reikon Games, September 26)
Ruiner is dark, gritty cyberpunk that makes Hotline Miami look like a children’s birthday party in comparison. Its killing sprees play out fast and nasty, with you picking up discarded weapons, dashing around, and generally bringing the pain. The game’s tough and twitchy gunfights didn’t quite win me over at Gamescom, but given enough time and patience, I can definitely see the appeal in that endlessly repeating cycle of killing, dying, and trying again.
Flotsam (Pajama Llama, 2018)
If you like survival strategy games but are tired of yet another one where little dudes are chopping down trees to build some houses, you are going to love Flotsam. Forget all about those trees, because the world is flooded and your tiny ragtag group of survivors have to make do with whatever the currents carry their way. Build stuff from scrap and learn to recycle while fending off strange sea creatures and trying to survive at sea. I got some hands-on time with an early build and it’s probably going to be a while until this one gets released, but if you’re looking for a survival game that shakes things up a bit, keep your eyes peeled for Flotsam on the horizon.
FAR: Lone Sails (Okomotive, 2018)
I wrote about how much I like the style and atmosphere of FAR: Lone Sails before, but this time I actually got to play a new build and I loved just about everything about it. Eager to learn more about the deserted world she inhabits, main character Lone sets sail into the unknown, encountering light environmental puzzles on the way. You also have to keep the engine of her weird vehicle running, hoist the sails, and generally make sure that everything’s working and nothing’s on fire. FAR might turn out to be a rather short experience, but that doesn’t keep it from being one of this years (admittedly numerous) Gamescom highlights.

]]>Solo (Team Gotham, 2018)
Described as a personal experience for puzzle lovers and players interested in interesting narratives, Solo has you helping a little sailor travel through an archipelago chock-full of puzzles and philosophical musings. These puzzles seem quite varied and the narrative interludes don’t really serve any purpose except making you think hard about your own life. What most impressed me, though, were all the little details that made Solo’s world come alive, from the lively fauna to the ability to take pictures with your camera just because it’s nice. What a wonderful world to lose yourself in (and think about heartbreak).
Real Farm Sim (Triangle Studios, 2017)
Well, I can tell you right away that I don’t quite see the appeal here, but apparently there’s a huge market for agricultural simulators out there. So, what makes this indie outing by a small Dutch studio noteworthy? There’s both a sandbox mode that lets you mess around in all kinds of tractors and farming equipment and a mission-based career mode which lets you build up your farm from humble beginnings to the mother of all farms. All of this without getting your hands dirty.
Children of Morta (Dead Mage, 2018)
This tough, top-down dungeon crawler relies on familial ties to give you a sense of progression. Much like Rogue Legacy before, you’re playing as a family who makes a living from dungeon-delving and monster-killing. Pick the family member that best suits your play style and upgrade your skills or family facilities inbetween runs. The game really looks quite lovely and I dig the slightly somber atmosphere.
Aegis Defenders (Guts Department, 2017)
The character design of this tower defense / platformer hybrid gave me some serious Studio Ghibli vibes, which is always a good thing. As grandpa/granddaughter team you traverse a rather lovely-looking 16-bit world, fight critters, and set up your defenses to brave an onslaught of enemies now and again. While the platforming felt just a tad sluggish to me, the overall presentation has me very much looking forward to the full release later this year.
Nine Parchments (Frozenbyte, 2017)
Set in the world of their Trine games, Frozenbyte’s Nine Parchments is a cooperative action game that has you flinging spells as one of (up to) four wizards. It’s bright, it’s colorful, and it offers a ton of customization options, so everyone can run around with silly hats and whatnot. This one is a blast if you’re playing with a full party – and you might need the extra help if you want stand a chance against the game’s huge bosses. That giant mantis shrimp definitely meant business!
Marz Rising (Door Fortyfour, 2017)
Space zombies are invading your Martian settlement, so go build some towers and zap those monsters good! There is a pretty neat twist to this tactical base defense game: each building needs crew to operate, so you need to have a plan for what to build and where to place it. If the zombies overrun your towers, you can still tell your people to retreat and operate another building, so you’d better make sure that they don’t end up as zombie snacks. The tower defense genre isn’t exactly known for being innnovative, but Marz Rising looks like it could actually bring something new to the table.

With things looking pretty bleak in Azeroth, the world’s greatest heroes prepare a desperate mission into the heart of the Burning Legion’s stronghold.
Blizzard revealed today that World of Warcraft: Shadows of Argus will see players battle against the forces of the Legion on their home turf, the fel-scarred planet Argus.
This was all revealed during Blizzard’s Gamescom conference, which officially revealed the Shadows of Argus release date falling on August 29.
“The journey to Argus begins within the Exodar. Velen is gathering allies to join him on a journey most perilous aboard a new ship known as the Vindicaar,” a Blizzard statement explains.
“Once on Argus, adventurers progress through a series of story chapters in three new regions. Each week, new elements of the story on Argus become available, telling the tale of what was, what is, and what could be.”
Here’s how Blizzard plan to break down the adventuring each week:
Week 1: Begin the invasion of Argus and embark on an epic storyline beginning in Krokuun. Team up with the Army of the Light and take the fight to the very heart of the Legion in the Antoran Wastes. Gain access to new World Quests and Emissaries on Argus.
Week 2: Finish the story of Krokuun and travel to the ruined draenei city of Mac’Aree. Gain access to Invasion Points and thwart the Burning Legion’s plans on other worlds. Additional World Quests in Mac’Aree are available along with access to Invasion Points.
Week 3: Finish the Shadows of Argus storyline, unlock all World Quests, and venture into the new dungeon, the Seat of the Triumvirate. Activate your Netherlight Crucible on the Vindicaar to begin forging Relics.
The new Patch 7.3 adventure kicks off with the quest: The Hand of Fate. Azeroth’s heroes are asked to travel to the Exodar and meet with Velen and his gathering allies—many of whom are familiar faces.
“After you join up with Velen and the rest of the invasion party, it’s time to embark aboard the new draenei vessel — the Vindicaar.
“It serves as the base of operations for your time on Argus and is outfitted with a variety of conveniences that become accessible over time, including an innkeeper, mailbox, profession trainers, portal to Dalaran, repairs, quest givers, vendors, the Vindicaar Matrix Core, Navigation Console, and Netherlight Crucible.”
More key information from Blizzard on the new World of Warcraft launch:
Netherlight Crucible: The Netherlight Crucible is a forge that will help you enhance the relics on your Artifact weapon. As you progress through the storyline on Argus, you’ll unlock the forge’s abilities and the additional power of your Artifact weapon through your chosen relics.
Navigation Console: The Navigation Console aboard the Vindicaar connects to beacons on the surface of Argus. These beacons will help you quickly travel from point to point throughout Argus and back to the Vindicaar when needed.
The Matrix Core: Several Vindicaar powers unlock within the Matrix Core at the heart of the ship as you progress through Argus. These powers can be used to aid you along the way.
Profession Trainers: Not all Profession trainers can be found on the Vindicaar, but with a new world to exploit explore, there are new opportunities for new crafted items. Azeroth’s finest will need the best equipment to take on the challenges ahead— and opportunity awaits for their crafters.
Traveling Argus: Lightforged Beacons are similar to flight paths and are discovered as you progress through the storylines within Krokuun, Antaron Wastes, and Mac’Aree. These beacons transport you quickly back to the Vindicaar or out to any additional beacons you’ve discovered throughout the three regions.
New World Quests: As with the Broken Isles and Broken Shore, World Quests become available throughout the various regions as you venture through Argus. They offer a variety of rewards and a new Emissary Quests that align with the new factions Army of the Light and Argussian Reach.
Overwatch fans are about to get their first look at the game’s brand new map, as Blizzard prepares for part one of its Gamescom 2017 reveal.
The brand new Overwatch map will be shown for the first time as part of a Blizzard preview video later today.
Overwatch fans can tune in at 5pm UK time for a look at the map, which will be playable at the Blizzard booth.
“We’ll kick things off by releasing a special preview video of all the playable content we’ll be showcasing at the event,” Blizzard revealed.
“Be sure to mark your calendar for 18:00 CEST (5pm BST) on Monday, August 21, and head to YouTube to watch it.”
Unreleased voice lines suggest the new map is called Junkertown, which ties in to the lore of Junkrat and Roadhog.
Blizzard will confirm the name of the map later today, and will hopefully reveal the release date on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
You can watch the action unfold at 5pm by checking out the YouTube video below.
And that’s not the only big Overwatch reveal planned for Gamescom 2017.
Just two days after previewing the new map, Blizzard will fill in the story gaps with a brand new animated short.
This will go live on Wednesday, August 23 at 5pm UK time, and will also be streamed on YouTube.
“The world premiere of a new Overwatch animated short will take place on our main stage and via live stream during the Blizzard Reveal Ceremony on Wednesday, August 23,” Blizzard confirmed.
Blizzard is also about to make the new reporting feature available on PS4 and Xbox One.
But Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has warned fans that the reporting system is still a work in progress for Blizzard.
“Also, it’s important to note the reporting system and punishments are very much an ongoing development for us,” he said. “Improvements will continue over time.
“We are working on increased punishments for high frequency offenders, email notifications when your reports result in disciplinary action (we’re experimenting with this right now and we’ll expand this as we refine it) and eventually notifications in the game client when your report results in disciplinary action.”
This will be accompanied by two new deathmatch modes, which are currently being tested on the PC.
