The Nintendo Switch has overtaken another console in lifetime sales: the GameCube. The Japanese console maker sold 3.19 million units in the last quarter, brining the Switch’s total install base to 22.86 million. The beloved GameCube, by comparison, managed 21.74 million in its six-year run. For Nintendo, these are healthy numbers. The company sold 2.93 million Switch consoles in the same period last year, before entering a bumper holiday season that shifted 7.23 million units. The house of Mario will need similar success this year to hit its sales target of 20 million for the current financial year.

Nintendo’s books are also looking solid. Today, the company reported revenue of 221 billion yen (roughly $ 1.96 billion), up from 220 billion yen (roughly $ 1.95 billion) during the same quarter last year. Operating profit, meanwhile, hit 30.9 billion yen (roughly $ 274 million), up from 23.8 billion yen (roughly $ 211 million) in the second quarter of 2017. The growth is small, but positive in a generally quiet period for Nintendo. Aside from Super Mario Party, and the cardboard-folding Labo Vehicle Kit, there haven’t been many Switch exclusives recently. The company has been leaning instead on indies and third-party releases like Mega Man 11.

The Japanese console maker has some blockbuster releases planned for the holiday season, however. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a beloved brawler that features almost every conceivable character from Nintendo’s back catalogue. It will be flanked by the adorable and beginner-friendly Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, which work in tandem with the still immensely popular Pokémon Go mobile game. They’ll be supported by a raft of smaller third-party releases such as Transistor, Guacamelee 2 and the dungeon-crawler Diablo 3. For Nintendo, this is as good as it gets (in a year where it doesn’t have a mainline Mario or Zelda release, anyway.)

Over the weekend, a Japanese auction site revealed an incredibly rare version of Nintendo’s Wii remote: one that was designed not for a Wii console, but for the previous generation’s GameCube. And at least one game developer has already attested to its legitimacy.

The previously unrevealed remote controller, which sold at Yahoo Auctions for 74,000 yen (approximately $ 663 USD) on Thursday, looks incredibly similar to what eventually launched for the Wii. The button layout and shape of the remote looks quite similar, and it includes a paired “nunchuk” controller and sensor bar. But unlike the wireless Wii controller that eventually launched in 2006, this one is hardwired—and includes a GameCube controller connector at the end of its apparently long cord.

Fans of the early-2000s era GameCube version of the original Animal Crossing likely remember the game including a handful of emulated NES titles that could be played by obtaining in-game items for your house. What players back then didn’t know is that the NES emulator in Animal Crossing can also be used to play any generic NES ROM stored on a GameCube memory card.

Security researcher James Chambers discovered the previously unused and undocumented feature buried in the original Animal Crossing game code and detailed his methodology and findings in a technically oriented Medium post this week.

The key to opening Animal Crossing‘s NES emulator is the game’s generic “NES console” item. Usually, this item simply tells players who try to use it that “I want to play my NES, but I don’t have any software” (separate in-game items are used to play the NES ROMs that are included on the Animal Crossing disc).

As revealed by industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, Nintendo is teaming up with NVIDIA to release some of its Wii and Gamecube games in China for the first time. While NVIDIA’s Tegra chip is at the heart of the Nintendo Switch, in this case, the games will run on the NVIDIA Shield, which hit the market today in China. NVIDIA confirmed that New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and PUNCH-OUT!! are all available now for the Shield in 1080p, while others including Super Mario Galaxy are “coming soon.”

Ahmad posted videos of Nintendo games running on the Shield (sourced from Weibo) and provided some pricing info, saying that the Shield in China costs 1499 RMB (about $ 226), while each remastered game costs 68 RMB (about $ 10). We wouldn’t expect anything about this arrangement to expand beyond China in the foreseeable future, but the licensing arrangement is a way for Nintendo to crack the market officially. We don’t have much information on the Shield that’s available in China, but it is different from the US version, with local “content, store, search and more” plus a voice control AI powered by Baidu.
