This article contains spoilers for “House of the Dragon” episode five and “Game of Thrones.”
Most couples on “Game of Thrones” and its prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” are pretty much doomed from the start. Life in Westeros is hard, even for its most rich and powerful, and marriages are rarely a matter of love. For Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate), marriage is entirely political. They will unite two ancient houses and help cement political alliances, forging a new path forward with their offspring. Both of them a bit hesitant to wed because they already have romantic interests, but are able to come to an agreement that should satisfy everyone. They’re surprisingly progressive in a frequently backwards world, opting for a secret open marriage that will allow Laenor to express his true feelings for the Knight of Kisses, Joffrey (Solly McLeod), while Rhaenyra can continue her tryst with Ser Cole (Fabien Frankel).
The duo reminded me of another ill-fated pair from “Game of Thrones”: Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). Like Laenor, Renly was a gay man who was expected to wed a woman and beget heirs, and like Rhaenyra, Margaery was more than willing to find ways to ensure everyone could have their cake and eat it too. Unfortunately, Westeros is an awful place and love never wins, but you have to give them all points for trying.

Renly and Margaery were a delightful juxtaposition to some of the other couples on “Game of Thrones.” Almost every married pair kept secrets from one another, whether it was Cersei’s (Lena Headey) keeping her affairs with her brother a secret from the King or Ned Stark (Sean Bean) keeping the true nature of Jon Snow’s (Kit Harrington) parentage from his wife, but Renly and Margaery were pretty open and honest with one another. Margaery knew that Renly was in love with her brother, Loras (Finn Jones), and went out of her way to try and reassure Renly that she didn’t mind as long as he helped her produce heirs. Others weren’t as accepting of Renly, and there were plenty of tiny japes at his expense because of his sexuality, because homophobia is alive and well in Westeros. Eventually Renly met a tragic end because of his brother Stannis and Margaery goes on to take part in one of the franchise’s many tragic weddings, but for a brief period they looked like a potential progressive future for the Seven Kingdoms.
There was no real love between Renly and Margaery, at least not in the romantic or sexual sense, but they had one thing most of the other couples in the franchise sorely lack: mutual respect. While “House of the Dragon” is focusing on the feminine perspective, that doesn’t remove the rotten marriages. Alicent (Emily Carey) is basically a caretaker and baby maker for King Viserys (Paddy Considine), for example, while Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) only ever used his wife to gain a bit of property. Thankfully, Rhaenyra and Laenor have at least unique couple to look up to: Laenor’s parents, Corlys and Rhaenys Velarion (Steve Toussaint and Eve Best).

While figuring out the nature of their betrothal, Rhaenyra suggests to Laenor that they can have extramarital affairs as long as they make plenty of babies for the line of succession. She, like Margaery, doesn’t really mind that he’s more interested in other men, and she would rather be with Ser Cole or even her uncle Daemon (Matt Smith) anyway. There are some potential concerns down the line, as that Old Valyrian blood is strong, and people might ask questions if potential heirs don’t look like both parents, but if Cersei Lannister managed to keep her three incest children off the chopping block for as long as she did despite them looking like little clones of herself and her twin, then maybe people in Westeros don’t understand genetics all that well.
Either way, the way the two talk with one another shows the same kind of mutual care and respect that Laenor’s parents have for each other, and it would do the both of them a lot of good to continue mirroring that pair. Their progressive, potentially lovely plan was unfortunately undone by Ser Cole’s murderous display at the wedding, and they’re going to need to learn to lean on each other if they’re going to survive a future together in King’s Landing.

While I understand the inclination to continue to tell stories in Westeros, especially this one, because it’s based on history but adds dragon battles, maybe it’s time for a change of location for the franchise. Westeros is basically the Alabama of author George R.R. Martin’s world, where homophobia, misogyny, and incest run rampant, but there are plenty of other great, unexplored locations that deserve their own shot. After all, I love a gritty fantasy series with lots of sex and violence, but the regular inclusion of bigotry is a reminder of real-world misery that I would rather leave behind. While there is a series planned about Nymeria, who united Dorne, there should be a series about later-era Dorne, when it’s a beacon of knowledge, progressive ideals, and great wine. There’s still plenty of backstabbing, secrets, and political posturing in Dorne, but people aren’t condemned for their sexuality and bastards are given the same rights as children born in wedlock. Oh, and women have significantly more rights. Dorne kind of rules, and it’s a shame that we’ve barely seen any of it.
Similarly, there are the Summer Isles, which are described as being almost utopian, and other cultures even the books have yet to explore. Maybe it’s time to leave Westeros behind, or at the very least, take a little vacation to somewhere more enlightened.

]]>While it’s currently in public beta, the mod allows you to play through Half-Life 2’s single-player story from start to finish. The Source VR Mod Team integrated a handful of features found in Half-Life: Alyx to modernize the experience and make it playable in VR. For instance, you switch between weapons using the same selection grid found in Valve’s 2020 game.
Other VR-minded tweaks include the addition of optional laser sights, over-the-shoulder ammo storage, manual reloading and two-handed weapon handling. There’s even support for room-scale movement. The Source VR Mod Team says the project isn’t finished, but that hasn’t stopped people from enjoying the experience, with the mod currently holding an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on 732 reviews.
Like Black Mesa before it, Half-Life 2: VR Mod has been a long time coming. As Eurogamer notes, the project was first announced in 2017 and went through development hell before remerging in 2021. The fact you can play it today is thanks to a recent influx of new team members who "revitalized" development.

The pill-shaped cutout replaces the notch that houses the front camera and Face ID sensors, but has also been designed to animate to become part of the display, transforming its shape when delivering snippets of useful information.
Apple said it will open up the Dynamic Island technology to third-party developers to see what they can do with it, and while we can expect mainstream apps to quickly find ways to incorporate it, smaller developers are already thinking of how they might use it, too.
Spotted by MacRumors, software developer Kriss Smolka has come up with come up with a fun concept game based on the 1970s classic, Pong.
As you can see from Smolka’s tweet, you control the paddle at the bottom of the display, moving left and right to hit the ball. But in contrast to Pong, you want the static paddle at the top, which is actually the Dynamic Island, to hit the ball back.
Who has an iPhone 14 Pro right now? Need to test this on device asap!
🏝️ Hit The Island – our game concept for iPhone 14 Pro, still laggy but it’s turning out nice

— Kriss Smolka (@ksmolka) September 13, 2022
At the current time, the ball stays in play wherever it goes, with the player scoring a point every time they hit the opposing paddle. But as it’s a concept, Smolka could end up changing it so the aim is to get as many consecutive hits on the other paddle, or perhaps by adding a countdown clock encouraging you to get as many points in a limited time. It’s also possible that the bar will start off larger and gradually reduce in size with every hit, making it increasingly harder to succeed.
While simple in the extreme, the Pong idea offers an early taste of how developers can get creative with the Dynamic Island and take it beyond Apple’s original idea of using it as a straightforward information hub.
Smolka said he’s trying to have it available in the App Store by Friday, when Apple’s new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max start landing in people’s hands.
And if you love the look of the fun idea but have an iPhone with a plain old notch at the top, don’t fret. Smolka says he’s also working on making a version of his game for those phones, too.

It's been five years since the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and three years since Nintendo announced they were working on a sequel. Since 2019, news about the game has been sparse.
But during Tuesday's Nintendo Direct, we got more news about this new Legend of Zelda game than we ever have before.
Tuesday's Nintendo Direct ended with a short trailer for the next Zelda game. And that trailer ended with two reveals:
These are both big pieces of news. Up until this point, the game had only been referred to as "The Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." And all we knew about the release date was that Nintendo had planned it for "Spring 2023."
No one is quite sure what the title refers to yet — in fact, we don't even know what definition of the word "Tear" it's using. Is it a tear you cry? Or like a tear in a piece of paper? Until someone at Nintendo actually says the name aloud, your guess is as good as ours.
It's also important to note that even though Nintendo has given us May 12, 2023 as an official release date, it's not necessarily set in stone. Plenty of Zelda games in the past have experienced delays, even after receiving a solid release date. This game was originally planned for 2022 after all. Nintendo seems determined to ship Tears of the Kingdom in 2023, but there are no guarantees.
It'll release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch — unless Nintendo suddenly reveals a new console, like the rumored Switch Pro. And it'll likely cost $ 59.99 on release like most Nintendo games.
Games in the Legend of Zelda series are all connected by one long and confusing timeline. Despite this, it's rare for a Zelda game to ever receive a direct sequel that features the same characters in the same time period.
This is a big reason why fans are so hyped for Tears of the Kingdom: It's a direct sequel to 2017's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Breath of the Wild received universal acclaim upon release, and is considered one of the best Zelda games — if not one of the best video games — of all time. Even five years after its release, it still routinely makes the list of the Switch's bestselling games each month.
Nintendo
All this is to say that Tears of the Kingdom has a lot of weight on its shoulders. The few trailers we've seen of the new game make it look like it'll keep Breath of the Wild's art style and general gameplay systems. But when it comes to the story, we don't have much to go on.
However the plot pans out, we're sure that Nintendo will reveal more in the coming months.

]]>But what if I told you that you can become your own insider, especially when it comes to Nintendo Switch? Yes, you can create your own realistic predictions with ease rather than getting let down by enticing Reddit threads. All you have to do is follow Nintendo’s development cycle patterns, which have become crystal clear following today’s Direct showcase.
The deeper we get into the Nintendo Switch’s life cycle, the more clear patterns in Nintendo’s release cadence are starting to show. If you look at the company’s first-party 2022 release calendar, you might notice that it looks a little familiar. That’s because a good half of it has been comprised of sequels to games that hit the console in 2017.
In the Switch’s inaugural year, we got Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Fire Emblem Warriors, and more. By the end of this year, Switch owners will have Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. That’s not to mention that we were originally supposed to get The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom this year too, following up on 2017’s Breath of the Wild.
Coincidence? Or the machine-like reality of video game development cycles? You decide.

Five years isn’t a hard and fast rule, but you can see that rough time frame holding true when it comes to Switch sequels. September’s Nintendo Direct made that especially clear as it gave us our first look at the console’s 2023 line-up, which is already paralleling with 2018 and 2019. Octopath Traveler 2 is coming five years after its predecessor (though it’s a Square Enix project, not Nintendo) and Fire Emblem Engage‘s timing tracks by similar logic, though it’s a year early. If you really wanted to get tinfoil hat about it, you could note that Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe will launch five years after the last 2D Kirby game on Switch, Kirby Star Allies.
With all that in mind, Nintendo fans can start to make some educated guesses as to what could be coming in the back half of 2023 and even 2024. For instance, 2023 will mark the five-year anniversary of Pokémon Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee. We tend to get a new Pokémon game every year and Nintendo’s holiday 2023 slot is currently open, so you could make an educated guess that a Gold and Silver remake in that style could land around then.
Follow that logic into 2024 and you can start making even bigger predictions. That year gave us Grezzo’s excellent remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. The studio has been mostly quiet since, leaving fans to speculate whether or not it’s planning to remake another Zelda game. Perhaps we’ll see some long-rumored Oracle of Ages and Seasons remakes then. Other possibilities could include sequels to Luigi’s Mansion 3, Super Mario Maker 2, Yoshi’s Crafted World, and Ring Fit Adventure. It’s entirely plausible that a September 2023 Direct could include any number of those games.

You could poke plenty of holes in that logic, especially considering that we don’t have a Super Mario Odyssey follow-up on the horizon and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate defies any established Nintendo timelines. But this simply serves as a reminder that for all its secrecy, the video game industry often runs like a predictable machine. You can analyze patterns and start to make educated guesses about sequels with relative ease. There’s an assembly line-like efficiency to franchise production and Nintendo has especially locked that down during the Switch’s lifespan. There will always be left-field surprises and series that buck trends due to their success, but half of the Switch’s exclusives in the past year should come as no surprise to anyone who’s tuned in enough.

This article contains spoilers for “House of the Dragon” season 4 and discusses adult themes like incest, sexual assault, and abuse.
Westeros is a brutal place, and the stories from it are often filled with content many might find unsavory. Both “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” are based on books by George R. R. Martin, and both contain their fair share of raw sexuality, graphic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and other mature themes. For some, the sheer onslaught of salacious scenes might be too much, but “House of the Dragon” is thankfully avoiding some of the big mistakes of “Game of Thrones,” and that includes being overly exploitative.
“House of the Dragon” is just as willing to get dark and horny and full of incest as its predecessor, but it does it with a campy wink and a nod and a little more respect for itself, its characters, and its viewers. Instead of using shocking moments as a way to get people buzzing and then relying on upping the ante every time, “House of the Dragon” embraces the soap opera-silliness of it all, which in turn makes the serious and slightly objectionable stuff much more palatable.

Jaime and Cersei Lannister might have been the couple that launched a thousand “stuck in the washing machine” videos, but their tawdry tale of twincest was marred by Jaime’s uncharacteristic assault on Cersei in the Sept of Baelor. Their relationship was icky for reasons beyond the fact that they were siblings, because Jaime worshiped his sister while she manipulated him, and their coupling was only ever played for shock value. Compare that to Daemon (Matt Smith) and Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock), who appear to have their own power imbalance but turn out to be an even match. While I do not condone or endorse incest, seeing their scene play out as an exploration of her awakening desires instead of trying to make a moment go viral for pure shock’s sake was a delight.
There’s humor peppered throughout “House of the Dragon,” too, helping to balance the series’ tone and keep things from getting too grim. For example, the prospect of Rhaenyra being sold off to whichever royal man has the biggest castle is pretty depressing because she’s a human being treated like livestock, but her sequence of meeting suitors is surprisingly comical. The first person to attempt to woo her is an old man, and the next is a young boy. She rolls her eyes and is not impressed, because she’s a teenage girl and the whole thing is a waste of her time. By the time her youngest potential suitor gets into a sword fight with another young man, she has had enough and sails back to King’s Landing instead of meeting any more of the men her father has arranged for her to screen. Why should she, when she has the smoking hot Ser Cole waiting for her, and an equally attractive uncle who wants to embrace Targaryen traditions?

While “House of the Dragon” has some big ideas on its mind and is more willing to explore them than “Game of Thrones” ever was, it also seems to respect that in some ways it’s a fantasy soap opera. It’s “Dynasty” with dragons, following one seriously screwed-up family as they bicker and backstab one another. “House of the Dragon” is concerned with political positioning, meetings of the small council, and the gossip of the Red Keep, making it more like “Succession” than “Lord of the Rings.” It’s a story about humans in all of their gritty and gory glory, and the series is as comfortable depicting a sensuous, slightly spooky orgy in an opium den as it is making a mummer’s farce of the royal family through fart jokes. “House of the Dragons” is a show for adults, but that doesn’t mean it always has to be mature.
There’s a lot of entertainment to be found in slightly campy, trashy fare. Some of the most compelling characters to follow in “Game of Thrones” were the ones keeping secrets and gossiping with intent, like Littlefinger or Lord Varys, and “House of the Dragon” leans into the idea that information is power. Gossip is a currency, appearances are everything, and “House of the Dragon” is an absolute blast when it embraces its trashier side.

On Monday, Google detailed what Search, Chrome, Drive, Maps, Gmail and News users can expect once those apps support iOS lock screen widgets. For the most part, there aren’t many surprises here. The majority of the apps will come with several different widgets, allowing you to access some features with one tap. For instance, Chrome widgets include shortcuts to the browser’s incognito mode and voice search functionality. There’s even a separate widget for Chrome’s dinosaur game in case you find yourself without an internet connection and need something to pass the time.
The best part is that you won’t need to go out of your way to download anything. “Once our widgets are available, just press and hold down your Lock Screen to start customizing,” says Google. You can expect them to arrive in the “coming weeks,” according to the company.

Niantic is the king of mobile AR gaming experiences. The studio brought the world titles like Pokémon Go and the recently shuttered Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. This is the first time the team is collaborating with the Marvel franchise.
Niantic’s press release for the game describes it as “the first Marvel game where players become their own unique Marvel Super Hero,” noting that “Marvel World of Heroes breaks new ground by extending gameplay into the real world as only Niantic games can. The game is designed to be a social game experience and pits players, their friends, and their iconic Marvel Super Hero allies against Marvel Super Villains and interdimensional threats.”
The press release also states that players will create their own super identity and origin story. Once this is done, they are tasked with patrolling their neighborhoods to “foil crimes, complete Super Hero missions, and thwart interdimensional threats.” In doing this, players will level up and unlock equipment and abilities and team up with actual Marvel heroes like Spider-Man and Wolverine. What is precisely entailed in these tasks of foiling crimes and more is still up in the air.
Players can use their phones to join up with their favorite Marvel heroes in Marvel World of Heroes when it releases in 2023.

— Vodeo Games (@VodeoGames) September 7, 2022
Vodeo Games was founded in 2021 by Threes! designer Asher Vollmer. The studio released its first game that same year. According to Vodeo’s website, it had been working on a new project before today’s announcement. The studio will complete work on the Steam version of Beast Breaker before closing shop.
At the end of last year, Vodeo’s all-remote team of 13 successfully unionized with Code-CWA, the Communication Workers of America's Campaign to Organize Digital Employees. Despite the management of Vodeo Games recognizing the studio’s union, the two sides never came to a bargaining agreement. According to Vodeo Workers United, negotiations came to an end when it became apparent the studio could not secure additional funding. The group said it would share what it learned with other industry workers to help them organize their workplaces.
Vodeo Games has announced that it has closed its doors. Vodeo Workers United (CODE-CWA) were in the process of collective bargaining but had not yet reached an agreement when it became clear the studio was no longer financially viable. Therefore we decided to halt bargaining.
— Vodeo Workers United (@vodeoworkers) September 7, 2022
Since workers at Vodeo unionized, employees at other studios have attempted to follow suit. Most notably, there’s the QA division at Activision's Raven Software, which voted in May to form the Game Workers Alliance. More recently, quality assurance staff at Blizzard Albany, formerly Vicarious Visions, filed for a union election.

For instance, if you’re on your phone and see a cool Forza Horizon 5 clip that your friend posted, you can start playing the game just by clicking the button. Given that this is a cloud gaming function, you’ll need an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership to use it.
Xbox’s take on the feature doesn’t seem quite as advanced as Stadia’s State Share, however. The latter allows you to join a game at the same point as someone else and experience a world exactly as they left it just by clicking a link.

There’s another welcome feature that’s available on Xbox Series X/S starting today: noise suppression for party chats. Microsoft says it can keep sounds like controller clicks, your breathing and background noise out of your friends’ ears.
Noise suppression, which Xbox started publicly testing back in May, will be enabled by default. If you want your pals to hear music you’re playing in the background, you can switch it off from the Parties and Chats options in the guide. Microsoft plans to bring the feature to more devices in the near future.
