“Anger's a potent spice. A pinch wakes you up. Too much dulls your senses.” — Harry Beltik

In times of uncertainty and upheaval — which 2020 certainly was — people tend to gravitate towards that which is comforting. The voice of a loved one, a favourite food, a familiar song, warmth, television.

In 2020, the scripted series that Netflix subscribers turned to the most, with a whopping 62 million views in its first month, was The Queen’s Gambit, according to the streaming service. The tight seven-episode mini-series created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott is an adaptation of a 1983 novel by Walter Tevis and stars the enigmatic and wide-eyed Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon, an orphaned chess prodigy struggling with abandonment, addiction and other demons as she works her way up the ranks. Remarkably, the show bears no opening title sequence – just a simple title stamp during the beginning of each episode.

But in chess, opening moves are everything. It’s a beguiling bit of direction, allowing viewers to focus on Beth – and perhaps enjoy an uninterrupted binge experience – while saving some dazzle for last.

When the title sequence does arrive – a surprising closer capping off the show’s seventh and final episode – it’s a demonstration of skill, a celebration of Beth’s journey and a visual delight. The checkerboard abstractions are the brainchild of title designer Saskia Marka, most well known for her work on Babylon Berlin, which earned the top spot in Art of the Title’s Top 10 Title Sequences of 2018. The hypnotizing patterns used as the basis for the graphics were created by physicist-turned-animator David Whyte (aka Bees and Bombs) using the coding language Processing. The imagery, framed by dark vignetting and doused in dusty particles, is lifted to joyful heights thanks to the elegant, triumphant theme by composer Carlos Rafael Rivera. Watching the swagger of shapes in black and white transform, shift and dance, one can’t help but hear the warm echo of Beth’s last word: сыграем. Let’s play.

A discussion with Title Designer SASKIA MARKA and Animator DAVID WHYTE.

Congratulations on your work this year, Saskia! It’s been a difficult year to get anything done but you managed to work on three titles projects – Deutschland 89, the update to the Babylon Berlin titles and The Queen’s Gambit. How have things changed for you, given the pandemic and everything that’s going on?

SM: Thank you so much! I’m very thankful for the great projects I was still able to work on but it was definitely a challenge during lockdown and throughout the year, working, with the kids running around,…

Your move, Emmy.

At Sunday’s 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Anya Taylor-Joy captured the Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series trophy for her work in Netflix’s chess drama The Queen’s Gambit.

The 24-year-old actress’ formidable competition in the category included Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America)
Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), Shira Haas (Unorthodox) and Nicole Kidman (The Undoing).

“I would love to thank Netflix… for letting us make the show we wanted to make,” Taylor-Joy said in her acceptance speech. “It’s obviously wonderful that everyone’s seen the show. I would do this project again and again and again; I learned so much. Thank you to the audiences that have watched it and supported the characters. It meant the world.”

Queen’s Gambit — which also won the Golden Globe for Best Limited Series or Movie (view complete winners list here) — ranks as Netflix’s most-watched scripted limited series to date, with 62 million member accounts tuning in to the show in the first 28 days following its Oct. 23 premiere.

SNL: John Krasinski, Others Sing Lost Lyrics to Bridgerton, Queen’s Gambit, Mandalorian, Office and More Themes https://briefnews.eu/snl-john-krasinski-others-sing-lost-lyrics-to-bridgerton-queens-gambit-mandalorian-office-and-more-themes/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-john-krasinski-others-sing-lost-lyrics-to-bridgerton-queens-gambit-mandalorian-office-and-more-themes/#respond Sun, 31 Jan 2021 22:26:11 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snl-john-krasinski-others-sing-lost-lyrics-to-bridgerton-queens-gambit-mandalorian-office-and-more-themes/

Looks like the next edition of Now That’s What I Call Music is going to be a must-have for TV fans.

In a riff of the popular NOW music franchise, SNL delivered its own version entitled, Now That’s What I Call Theme Songs Sung by Stars, allowing myriad series leads (or facsimile thereof) to perform original lyrics to some of TV’s most classic tracks (watch the full clip below).

The short began with Chloe Fineman giving us her best Nicole Kidman, as she crooned The Undoing‘s opening tune, “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” (“Did you notice my coat?” she asks.) From there we were served new renditions of the songs from Bridgerton (by way of Lady Whistledown aka Julie Andrews), The Mandalorian, The Queen’s Gambit, Succession and more, as Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, Beck Bennett, Melissa Villaseñor, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat and all stepped in to exercise their vocal talents.

But in the clip’s final hurrah, first-time host John Krasinski sang the “long-lost lyrics” to The Office‘s theme song, which began with a whole lot of “Scrantons.” He then did Dunder Mifflin proud, singing alongside the actual opening credits, which basically turned into a narration of the accompanying video (“That’s a calculator!”).

That wasn’t the night’s only fun tidbit for Office fans. In Krasinski’s opening monologue, he was consistently interrupted by “Office fans” Kenan Thompson, Moffat, Davidson and Ego Nwodim, who neglected to ask any real questions but rather used it as a chance to repeatedly call the actor “Jim.” The bit culminated in a kiss between “Jim and Pam,” with SNL‘s own Pete Davidson subbing in for Jenna Fischer. (Watch that full monologue here.)

What was your favorite skit from SNL‘s return? Grade the episode in the poll below, then tell us your thoughts in the comments!

‘New Mutants’ Pushed to 2019, ‘Deadpool 2’ Moved Up, and ‘Gambit’ Delayed https://briefnews.eu/new-mutants-pushed-to-2019-deadpool-2-moved-up-and-gambit-delayed/ https://briefnews.eu/new-mutants-pushed-to-2019-deadpool-2-moved-up-and-gambit-delayed/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2018 21:27:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-mutants-pushed-to-2019-deadpool-2-moved-up-and-gambit-delayed/ New Mutants release date

In the wake of the X-Men spin-off movie Gambit losing yet another director today, 20th Century Fox has shifted around the release dates for a bunch of other X-Men-related movie projects they have planned. Read on to find out why New Mutants was pushed to 2019, when you can see Deadpool 2, and when Gambit will (supposedly) hit theaters.

The Hollywood Reporter relays word from 20th Century Fox about its updated schedule for the studio’s superhero entries. The most important update is that New Mutants, the Josh Boone-directed horror film that stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Charlie Heaton, has been pushed back from its original April 2018 release date all the way until February 22, 2019. That’s a massive leap, but while huge delays like this can often signal behind the scenes problems with a movie, that may not be the case here. In this instance, THR says that their sources tell them one reason for the change is because Fox actually has too many X-Men movies on their slate and don’t want their to be confusion in some foreign markets, where New Mutants and Deadpool 2 would have been in theaters at the same time.

(I’m not sure I buy that logic, since everything we’ve heard indicates that those two films are totally separate stories that likely wouldn’t cause any confusion if they were in theaters simultaneously…other than people walking up to the counter and asking for “one ticket to the new X-Men movie, please” and the theater employees not knowing which movie to send them to.)

But speaking of Deadpool 2: good news! That film was originally set to be released on June 1, 2018, but now it’ll arrive two weeks earlier, on May 18, 2018. That’s an incredibly smart move on Fox’s part, because it positions Deadpool 2 as opening one week before Disney/Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Since Star Wars movies (even arguably unnecessary ones) are always genuine box office threats, this will at least give Deadpool 2 its time to shine before its audience is cannibalized in its second weekend of release.

As for Gambit, which just lost director Gore Verbinski this morning, the Channing Tatum-led heist thriller has been rescheduled from February 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019. That should give the studio some extra time to hire a director and give that person a fighting chance to, you know, actually have enough time to make the freakin’ movie before that new release date comes barreling toward them. Good luck, new Gambit director…whoever you may be.

‘Gambit’ Loses Yet Another Director as Gore Verbinski Bails https://briefnews.eu/gambit-loses-yet-another-director-as-gore-verbinski-bails/ https://briefnews.eu/gambit-loses-yet-another-director-as-gore-verbinski-bails/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2018 19:26:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gambit-loses-yet-another-director-as-gore-verbinski-bails/ Gambit director

Another one bites the dust. 20th Century Fox’s Gambit movie is now without a director…again. Pirates of the Caribbean filmmaker Gore Verbinski is the latest director to part ways with the X-Men spin-off movie, which was rumored to start production this March. But without a director, it seems like fans will waiting a while longer to see the card-throwing Cajun on the big screen again.

According to Deadline, director Gore Verbinski (A Cure for Wellness) has left the director’s chair of Gambit due to “scheduling issues,” and the site claims the split was amicable all around. And in case anyone is breathlessly waiting to find out if Channing Tatum is still on board to play the title role…yes, he is.

Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) was the first to come on board as the Gambit director before he left because of behind-the-scenes conflicts; he was followed by The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman, who left because he couldn’t find a personal connection to the story. The project was creatively reworked following the success of Fox’s recent R-rated superhero movies like Logan and Deadpool, but Verbinski, who joined last October, has jumped ship, leaving this film without a director for the third time.

It’s a shame, because it actually seemed as if the Gambit movie was finally making some progress. Last November, Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex, Cloverfield) was hired as the female lead opposite Tatum, and the movie was given a release date of February 2019. As recently as this week, OmegaUnderground reported that production on the Gambit solo film was supposed to begin on March 19 in New Orleans, Louisiana, but I’m guessing that’s all out the window now that the project is left rudderless once more.

At this point, I’m starting to wonder if we’re ever going to see this film. Fox could easily scrap the whole thing: Tatum has never appeared on screen in character before, and they haven’t made any in-universe decisions that rely on that character specifically showing up. But it’s unfortunate that this movie can’t seem to find the right assembly of talent to bring it to the starting blocks (let alone the finish line), because Fox’s X-Men spin-offs have established themselves as being far more creatively interesting than the traditional team-up X-Men movies lately (see: Deadpool, Logan, New Mutants).

This is definitely a passion project for Tatum, and if this movie ever does come to pass, we’ll likely look back on this moment as a key turning point for the project – either to lament the fact that Tatum should have let it go, or to praise him for his devotion to telling the character’s story.

‘Gambit’ Snags ‘Cloverfield’ Star Lizzy Caplan as Its Female Lead https://briefnews.eu/gambit-snags-cloverfield-star-lizzy-caplan-as-its-female-lead/ https://briefnews.eu/gambit-snags-cloverfield-star-lizzy-caplan-as-its-female-lead/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 12:58:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gambit-snags-cloverfield-star-lizzy-caplan-as-its-female-lead/ Lizzy Caplan Gambit

20th Century Fox’s Gambit solo movie was originally scheduled to hit theaters over a year ago, but several starts and stops and a revolving door of directors kicked its release back to 2019. And since the movie has just found a director in Gore Verbinski, important casting decisions are happening: Lizzy Caplan, the star of movies like Cloverfield and TV shows like Masters of Sex, has been cast as the film’s female lead. But who is she playing?

In case you’d forgotten, Channing Tatum is starring as the title X-Men character, a New Orleans-born mutant thief named Remy LeBeau whose powers include being able to charge objects (most often, playing cards) with explosive energy. Now Variety reports that Caplan is in talks to star alongside him. The outlet says she’ll play the female lead, but since plot details are being kept under wraps, they aren’t sure which character Caplan would inhabit (assuming her deal goes through).

However, we’ve heard enough early plot rumors to hazard a guess: Caplan is most likely playing Bella Donna Boudreaux, a fellow mutant who meets Gambit when they’re both young. He’s a member of a Thief Guild, she’s a member of a rival Assassin Guild…there’s a whole Romeo & Juliet thing going on. If this is indeed the film’s lead female character, I can see Caplan as a convincing player in that world. I’d have loved to see the producers (Tatum included) choose to open things up a bit and get a bit more diverse in their casting – think Zazie Beetz as Domino in Deadpool 2, a role Caplan coincidentally auditioned for – but I think Caplan is a talented actress who has the physicality to pull this off. I don’t think I’ve specifically heard her do that distinctive Nawlins accent before, but if Tatum can pull it off, so can she. (PSA: seek out Party Down if you haven’t seen that show yet. Caplan is excellent in it.)

After filmmakers like Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) passed on the directing job, we recently heard that Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was in talks to join. Now Variety confirms that Verbinski will be behind the camera, marking his first superhero movie. Again, I’d love to see a newer, more exciting voice given an opportunity on a sexy thriller heist movie like this, but if they were insistent on going with someone more established, at least Verbinski is a visually inventive storyteller who seems like he can bring something interesting to the table.

Gambit is now slated to hit theaters on February 14, 2019.
