Silicon Valley is developing a “raw water” obsession.

In San Francisco, “unfiltered, untreated, un-sterilized spring water” from Live Water is selling for $ 60.99 for a 2.5 gallon jug — and it’s flying off the shelves, the New York Times reported. Startups dedicated to untreated water are gaining steam. Zero Mass Water, which allows people to collect water from the atmosphere near their homes, has already raised $ 24 million in venture capital.

People — including failed startup Juicero’s cofounder Doug Evans — are gathering gallons of untreated water from natural springs, venturing out onto private property by night to get the water. Evans told The Times that he and his friends brought 50 gallons of raw water to Burning Man.

“I’m extreme about health, I know, but I’m not alone with this,” Evans said. “There are a lot of people doing this with me. You never know who you’ll run into at the spring.”

On January 2, Business Insider’s Melia Robinson visited a San Francisco supermarket where a small company called Live Water sells its untreated water. Rainbow Grocery was sold out of the Fountain of Truth Spring Water from Live Water, but a sign indicated a “slight price increase.”

The cost of a 2.5 gallon jug increased from $ 36.99 to $ 60.99 since The Times’ article published. While the price includes the glass container, a refill costs only $ 14.99, according to The Times.

Fans of the untreated water are not backed by science. However, many told the times that they feel confident that they are getting health benefits from drinking “live” water.

For example, Mukhande Singh, the founder of Live Water, told The Times that his startup’s water expired after a few months — something he says is normal for “real water.”

“It stays most fresh within one lunar cycle of delivery,” Singh said. “If it sits around too long, it’ll turn green. People don’t even realize that because all their water’s dead, so they never see it turn green.”

However, food safety experts said there no evidence that untreated water is better for you. In fact, they say that drinking untreated water could be incredibly dangerous.

“Almost everything conceivable that can make you sick can be found in water,” food safety expert Bill Marler told Business Insider. That includes bacteria and diseases such as cholera, E. coli, Hepatitis A, and Giardia.

“You can’t stop consenting adults from being stupid,” Marler said. “But, we should at least try.”

The average American is using a lot less water on a daily basis. Six gallons less, to be exact.

The US Geological Survey’s National Water Use Science Project has estimated water use in the United States every five years since 1950. In its most recent estimate published this fall, the USGS found that American daily water use per capita went from 88 gallons in 2010 to 82 gallons per capita in 2015.

Conservation of fresh water is important because it is a limited resource: Less than 1 percent of all the water on Earth can by used by humans. With growing populations and changing climates, fresh water is becoming increasingly valuable, says Edward Osann, a senior policy analyst and water efficiency project director at the National Resources Defense Council.

“One of the effects of climate change is we are seeing more extremes: more substantial droughts, followed by substantial floods,” says Mr. Osann. “If we can sustain ourselves while using less fresh water, we will be more resilient while going into these fluctuations in the hydrologic cycle of the future.”

The US population grew by 4 percent between 2010 and 2015, or 12 million people, but total withdrawals for public supply – water that comes out of kitchen faucets and lawn sprinklers – decreased by 7 percent. According to the USGS, total public-supply withdrawals were at their lowest levels since 1995.

Household water use in the United States has been tracking downward since President George H.W. Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 1992, says Osann. October 2017 marked the 25th anniversary of the policy, which required the first national standards for water efficiency in new consumer products such as faucets, shower heads, and toilets. For example, the law required a change in toilet water use from 3.5 to 5 gallons per flush, to a mandated 1.6 gallons or less.

But while the country is using less water, many Americans are still receiving expensive water bills. Joseph Kane, senior research associate at the Brookings Institution’s Metro Policy Program who focuses on issues of water and infrastructure, explains that although water utility companies are not in the business of making money, they still need to ensure they have the revenue needed to repair infrastructure that is between 50 and 80 years old.

“We’re at a time of great maintenance and replacement needs,” says Mr. Kane. “The challenge beyond increased sustainability and efficiency is the issue of affordability.”

california droughtReuters/Mike BlakeAlong with improved product efficiency, droughts in the country’s two most populous states – California and Texas – were significant drivers of water use decline in 2015, says Cheryl Dieter, a hydrologist with the USGS and coauthor of the recent report. Together, California and Texas accounted for 78 percent of the nationwide water use decline, due to drought-related restrictions. “A lot of the states had a lot of small decreases,” says Ms. Dieter. “But when things happen in those big states, they affect the overall national trends.”

In January 2014, California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) declared a state of emergency because of the state’s record drought, asking Californians to reduce their water use by 20 percent. In 2015, Governor Brown increased his request to 25 percent.

To reach this goal, the state and local governments have imposed stricter water use regulations. While the national toilet-flush standard is 1.6 gallons per flush, California lowered its standard in 2016 to no more than 1.28 gallons of water per flush.

“As much as people turn toward Washington, a lot of the solutions we are seeing are coming from the bottom up, from states and localities,” says Kane. “These times of drought and greater climate uncertainty are compelling many communities to start deciding what their longer-term strategies are.”

And while Texans reduced their daily use by 46 million gallons a day in 2015, California’s statistics were especially dramatic: The Golden State reduced its water use by roughly 680 million gallons – or 1,030 Olympic-sized swimming pools – per day.

“If they are able to do this right during a period of drought, it does tell a positive story and perhaps give precedent for other regions,” says Kane – regions that, he adds, may not be seeing such be reductions. “What are they doing that other places can learn from?”

According to more than 100 “Public Notice of Pollution” reports submitted to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the hurricane caused at least 28 million gallons of treated and untreated sewage to flood streets, residences, and waterways in 22 counties.

A department spokesperson told the New Republic that it’ll take time before the sewage overflows are completely assessed. Many reports say that the leaks in the state’s aging infrastructure are spewing waste in quantities characterized as “ongoing,” “unknown,” or “waiting on volume determination.”

Residents will likely have to deal with a host of public health issues stemming from the various breaches. Exposure to raw sewage can result in salmonella poisoning or giardia, among other nasty bacteria and parasites. And stagnant floodwaters have been shown to act as breeding grounds for E. coli.

The Miami Herald pointed out Florida’s vulnerable sewage system last year, but city officials shrugged off the warning. Other outlets predicted that Irma would be the system’s reckoning. Now Floridians are, quite literally, in the thick of it.

On Thursday, Navy spokesman Jim Moir said that fuel leaked from a tank into a ditch outside the base, according to a press release obtained by Associated Press.

Moir said the spill occurred when the fuel was being transferred from a truck to a storage tank Wednesday night and went unnoticed until 6:30am the next morning.

Another Navy spokesman, Tom Kreidel, told WAVY that roughly 94,000 gallons of JP-5 jet fuel had spilled, however, the Navy later said they were working with the city of Virginia Beach and the US Coast Guard to figure out the exact amount. 

Crews were able to prevent most of the fuel from traveling off the base, US Coast Guard and Navy officials said Thursday.

“We have been able to isolate the product from coming off the base using earthen dams,” Captain Kevin Carroll with the US Coast Guard said at a press conference. “It’s important to note at this time that the majority of the product is still on the NAS Oceana installation and it is being removed at this time.”

Carroll said crews are using vacuum trucks to separate the fuel from the water, which will then be emptied into “frac tanks” before being disposed of properly.

“We are committed to making this cleanup as quick and effective and environmentally conscious as possible,” Carroll said.

Studies on laboratory animals found JP-5 can cause damage to the liver, decrease immune response, impair performance on neurological function tests, and impair hearing, according to Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Those studies also found that contact with JP-5 caused dermatitis and damage to the skin.

Kreidel said air and water monitoring stations have been set up “between some neighborhoods that we think may have been affected” and the Navy is “continually monitoring” the health risks.

“What they’re looking for is the air quality; if it’s safe for human health,” Carroll said. “And right now all of our measurements have not even come close to where there is any threat to human health at this point. So that’s why we feel very, very confident in regards to residents returning to their homes.”

Officials said that no evacuation was ordered and there is no threat to anyone living around the base.

“We have mitigated the impact of this spill,” Carroll said. “We can’t put the fuel back in the tank, but I think we are effectively dealing with it right now and we will continue to work together.”

Local police shut down the northbound lanes of the road outside the base while crews work to clean the spill.

Newport News fire fighters tweeted that the hazmat team responded to help with the cleanup effort on Thursday.  

No injuries have been reported.

Moir said the cleanup process should be completed within 48 hours.
