Researchers have long suspected that a supermassive black hole lies in the center of our galaxy, and now they have strong evidence to support that suspicion. Using the Very Large Telescope — an array of four individual telescopes stationed in the Atacama Desert in Chile — scientists have been observing Sagittarius A* (pronounced Sagittarius A-star), an object in the center of the Milky Way galaxy thought to be a supermassive black hole. During their work, the research team observed three bright flares orbiting around Sagittarius A*, which completed 150-million-mile circuits in just 45 minutes. That’s about 30 percent the speed of light.

Scientists say an object that massive — over four million times the mass of our Sun — that fits within such a small orbit is almost certainly a black hole. “This always was one of our dream projects but we did not dare to hope that it would become possible so soon.” Reinhard Genzel, the researcher who led the study, said in a statement. “The result is a resounding confirmation of the massive black hole paradigm.” Scientist Oliver Pfuhl added, “It’s mind-boggling to actually witness material orbiting a massive black hole at 30 percent of the speed of light. GRAVITY’s tremendous sensitivity has allowed us to observe the accretion processes in real time in unprecedented detail.”

GRAVITY is an instrument that combines the light from the VLT’s four telescopes, allowing researchers to study distant objects, like galactic centers, that are too faint when observed with other instruments.

The bright flares seen orbiting Sagittarius A* are thought to be a result of magnetic interactions in the hot gas around the black hole. Further, they behaved as hot spots orbiting a black hole of this size were predicted to. Earlier this year, astronomers observing a star called S2 that orbits Sagittarius A* every 16 years found that the supermassive object stretched the star’s light at its closest point of orbit, just as Einstein predicted would happen in his theory of general relativity.

“We were closely monitoring S2, and of course we always keep an eye on Sagittarius A*,” said Pfuhl. “During our observations, we were lucky enough to notice three bright flares from around the black hole — it was a lucky coincidence!” The findings were published in Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Opening Banter: Our usual Monday Watercooler episode will happen tomorrow instead due to our usual contributors being away.

In The Mail Bag: Last week we talked briefly about the worst films we’ve seen this year (so far) and asked if there were any that we missed. Here are your responses:

  • Brian from Wichita, Kansas says “As a huge horror movie fan, there have been some spectacular experiences in 2018 such as A Quiet Place, some disappointments like Winchester and some rotten apples like Truth or Dare.   This being said, I give the RottenPasta award to Slender Man.  So much urban legend potential to bring this story to life but alas, this movie has weak dialogue, bland cinematography and worst of all, it isn’t scary.   My biggest disappointment of the year so far. “
  • Matt from Connecticut says “I saw SUPERFLY with my MoviePass. What a steaming pile. Amateurish, terribly written and acted, with the most ridiculous, adolescent fantasy sex scene I’ve ever seen. Pure garbage.”
  • Chase D from Ohio says “ So I just checked my Letterboxd diary for 2018 and it is telling me that I’ve seen 99 movies already… wow. Haha. 78 unique movies, and these are the ones I scored a 4/10 or worse:  – Proud Mary – Death Wish – The 15:17 to Paris – A Wrinkle in Time – Super Troopers 2 – Overboard – Life of the Party – Action Point And the winner of the worst scored movie of 2018 (so far) for me, with a 2/10, was Gotti. And I will be honest and say that the score is biased. It was filmed in my hometown, I worked on it, and I even was a background extra and made it into the final cut! So.. a 2/10 is probably too high, but I saw myself on a movie screen so sue me.??”
  • Will M says “This past weekend I watched Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. It was absolutely brutal. As an S. Craig Zahler fan, man was I disappointed.”
  • Sean from Missouri writes “I just wanted to chime in with my picks for the worst movies of the year. I haven’t seen a ton of movies this year but so far for me, it was definitely Maze Runner 3: The Death Cure and The Meg, hands down. The former had me questioning what I have been doing with my life, and the latter had me welcoming the sweet release of death. Also, since Brad mentioned Netflix movies, I haven’t seen very many at all but that new John Woo movie was pretty awful. I actually didn’t hate The Cloverfield Paradox as much as some people. I mean, it was bad but it was just kind of like “meh, whatever” bad. Anyway, I really enjoy the podcast and I have been listening almost since you guys started it. Hope you are doing well!”

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Opening Date Announced, Watch A New Teaser Trailer https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-galaxys-edge-opening-date-announced-watch-a-new-teaser-trailer/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-galaxys-edge-opening-date-announced-watch-a-new-teaser-trailer/#respond Wed, 23 May 2018 10:54:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-galaxys-edge-opening-date-announced-watch-a-new-teaser-trailer/ Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opening date

We knew that the upcoming Star Wars-themed lands coming to Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland Resort’s Disneyland would be opening in 2019, but now Disney Parks has revealed more information on when we can expect to visit a galaxy far far away. Hit the jump to learn new info on the Galaxy’s Edge opening date.

Disney Parks released a new teaser trailer showcasing the new Star Wars planet of Battu from a distance as a way to officially announce that Galaxy’s Edge would be opening in just one year from now. Disneyland’s version of Galaxy’s Edge will open in Summer of 2019, while Disney World’s version in Hollywood Studios will open later in Fall 2019. While it’s not stated, we believe the Disneyland version will open sometime in the last two weeks of May 2019, although wouldn’t it be nice if they could hit the May the 4th for a fan celebration?

This makes sense as Disneyland’s construction seems to be far ahead of the Disney World version and rumor has it Walt Disney Imagineering didn’t want to open both lands at the same time as they are still not sure what problems may pop up from the new immersive storytelling technology contained in these lands. While this isn’t confirmed officially, it’s expected that Disney Parks will use their findings from the Disneyland opening to help further stabilize the Disney World opening.

It’s surprising that they are making this announcement just five days before a big panel and presentation on the new land happening at Star Wars Galactic Nights at Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. You would think they would have held the big announcement for fans, although I’m not sure Florida would be a great place to announce that California is getting the land first.

JJ Abrams’ Star Wars Episode 9 opens on December 20, 2019, and some wonder if they will hold the big premiere at the California version of Galaxy’s Edge or maybe do a destination premiere in Florida, although both lands should be open before the Holidays hit at the end of next year.

The 14-acre lands will bring Batuu, a new never before seen Star Wars planet to life, a “gateway planet located on the outer rim, full of places and characters familiar and not so familiar.” The world will be “occupied by many inhabitants; humanoids, aliens, and droids … the attractions, the entertainment, everything we create will be part of our storytelling. Nothing will be out of character or stray from the mythology.” Described as a “remote frontier outpost,” the planet has existed within the canon “for thousands and thousands of years.” It used to be a vibrant spaceport, but since the advent of hyperspace, commerce has kind of fallen a little bit.

The land will feature two signature attractions, a motion simulator ride that will put you and your small flight crew in control of the Millenium Falcon and the other attraction is a dark ride which puts you in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Planet Will Be Introduced in New Novel https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-galaxys-edge-planet-will-be-introduced-in-new-novel/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-galaxys-edge-planet-will-be-introduced-in-new-novel/#respond Sat, 24 Mar 2018 08:19:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-galaxys-edge-planet-will-be-introduced-in-new-novel/ Star Wars Batuu

When the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge themed lands open next year at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, the setting will be the planet Batuu – a heretofore unseen area in Star Wars lore that’s located on the Outer Rim in a galaxy far, far away. But now Lucasfilm has revealed that the planet will first appear in a new book before guests get to explore the land up close and personal in the “real” world.

Lucasfilm (via StarWarsUnderground) has unveiled a new excerpt of a forthcoming book called Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances, a novel that sees Darth Vader joining forces with Grand Admiral Thrawn and taking on a secret mission. It turns out that the two of them will be visiting Batuu, and it appears that they both have some history there.

In the book, Emperor Palpatine assigns Vader and Thrawn to deal with a disturbance in the Force located on the edge of the galaxy. Here’s a quick excerpt, but you can read a larger one here:

“You surprise me, Admiral Thrawn,” Palpatine said. “I would have expected a certain eagerness to journey within sight of your home.”

Thrawn’s glowing red eyes narrowed slightly, and Palpatine felt his sudden caution. “Excuse me, Your Majesty?”

“The disturbance is located at the edge of your Unknown Regions,” the Emperor said. “It appears to be centered on a planet named Batuu.” Again, he sensed a reaction to the name. This time, the reaction came from both of them. “I believe you have heard of it?”

Thrawn’s eyes were hooded, the expression on that blue-skinned face swirling with memories. “Yes,” he murmured. “I have indeed heard of it.”

As, of course, had Vader. It was the place where he and Thrawn had long ago interfered, albeit unwittingly, with one of Palpatine’s plans.

But again, Vader remained silent.

“Very well, then,” Palpatine said. “You, Admiral, will command.” He looked at Vader. “You, Lord Vader, will deal with the disturbance.”

“Yes, Your Highness,” Thrawn said.

“Yes, my master,” Vader said.

Palpatine leaned back into the depths of his throne. “Then go.”

The two servants turned and walked toward the door between the double line of red-cloaked Imperial Guards silently lining their path. Palpatine watched them go: the Chiss in his white Grand Admiral’s uniform, the Sith garbed in black, his long cloak swirling behind him.

The solution to this particular puzzle would indeed require both of them. But more importantly, it would address Palpatine’s lingering questions.

He smiled thinly. Time for Thrawn to face his future.

Time for Vader to face his past.

Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances arrives on shelves on July 24, 2018, so we’ll have to wait until then to get a better idea of the extent of Batuu’s involvement in this story.

What We Know About Batuu So Far

Here’s how StarWars.com describes Batuu:

A remote outpost on the galaxy’s edge, Batuu was once a busy crossroads in the days prior to lightspeed. With the rise of hyperspace travel, however, the world — notable for the lush trees and mountain spikes that decorate its surface — was left behind, its prominence lost to planets on more popular trade routes. Today, Batuu is home to those who prefer to stay out of the mainstream, and a thriving port for smugglers, rogue traders, and adventurers traveling between the frontier and uncharted space. Significantly, it has also become a safe haven for those looking to avoid the attention of the First Order.

We’ve yet to get a good look at the new planet outside of concept art, D23 models, and a quick glimpse during Star Tours, so this new novel will presumably give us our most detailed description yet.

All of the attractions and entertainment at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be vetted by the Lucasfilm Story Group and will fit in with the franchise’s storytelling. But when guests visit, they’ll be entering during the era of the sequel trilogy, when The First Order reigns supreme and visitors “might feel the wrath of Kylo Ren.” But we know Batuu has been around for thousands and thousands of years, so it’ll be fascinating to see if any information revealed in Thrawn Alliances makes its way into the physical version of the park when Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens in 2019.

  • What’s it like to ride the monorail at Disney World with the door hanging wide open?
  • Find out about the connection between Disney Springs and Prohibition-era rum-runners.
  • See time-lapse satellite imagery of the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge construction site.
  • A new patent would seem to indicate lightsaber-wielding could be in the future for Disney parkgoers.
  • Calling all Dick Tracy fans. Come in, Dick Tracy fans …
  • And more!

WDW_Monorail_by_Joshua_Meyer_3x4

If you’ve ever ridden the Walt Disney World Monorail, then you’ve probably heard the spiel. “Please stand clear of the doors. Por favor mantenganse alejado de las puertas.” Well, now there may be more incentive to stand clear of the doors, because a door on a monorail full of passengers actually popped open this week while the vehicle was in transit to Epcot. Thankfully, no one fell out of the monorail, but the incident has raised safety concerns. The Disney Blog has some embedded video of the incident as well as an interview with the passenger who shot the video.

In other Epcot news, the park has announced the menus for its International Festival of the Arts, which runs from January 12 through February 19.

Over at the Magic Kingdom, meanwhile, there may be hope yet for fans of Stitch’s Great Escape. Rumor had it the attraction was being phased out quietly on January 6, but according to a Disney spokesperson, it is still considered to be in seasonal rotation at the park.

Last week we talked about the Edison nightclub, which is said to have been converted from the town’s old power plant; this week, the fictional backstory for Disney Springs continues to grow with Enzo’s Hideaway Tunnel Bar & Restaurant, a new venue housed in an underground cavern that once served as a secret gathering spot for rum-runners during the Prohibition era.

Beginning in mid-February, World of Disney, the bicoastal store at Disney Springs and the Downtown Disney District, is set to undergo a period of renovations.

If this Twitter thread is to be believed, it seems blockout dates for Cast Members signing in family and friends at Disneyland Resort may be on the rise in 2018.

As of January 8, Dumbo the Flying Elephant and the Main Street, U.S.A. vehicles are under refurbishment at Disneyland. Dumbo’s line is moving to a new shaded area and the streetcar track on Main Street, U.S.A. is being completely replaced.

Reservations are now available for events at the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival. The full list of events from March 2 to April 12 is up on Disney Parks Blog.

Inside the Magic is right: there never seems to be a slow period for Star Wars news these days. Now comes news that Star Wars Launch Bay at Disneyland has been updated with new displays for The Last Jedi and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

As it notes in the video description, Fresh Baked has taken the following of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge construction to the next level with an analysis of satellite imagery of the construction site. Check it out in the video above if you’ve got nineteen minutes to spare…and just remember, someone could be analyzing satellite imagery of your house right now.

Jedi_Challenges_by_Joshua_Meyer_3x4

In another bit of Star-Wars-related news, Disney has filed a patent for lightsaber technology that sounds similar to what is already out there with Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, whereby a user can grip the actual hilt of a lightsaber and see the laser sword part of it projected through augmented reality. Sounds like we’re definitely getting lightsabers at Galaxy’s Edge.

It’s been years since I watched Dick Tracy, the 1990 Warren Beatty film based on the 1930s comic strip about a police detective who wears a two-way wrist radio and a yellow trench coat and navigates a vibrant, seven-color world with a girlfriend named Tess Trueheart and a rogues gallery of cartoonish, Tommy-gun-wielding mobsters who bear names like Flattop and Pruneface. But that is a film that I always loved when I was younger, and I could never understand why it held such a lukewarm legacy. At the very least, it is a film where the make-up, art direction, and original songs (by Stephen Sondheim) were firing on all cylinders, so much so that it won in all three of those categories at the Academy Awards.

It’s always fun to think about theme park attractions that never were, and this week, Disney and more has a post up about the Dick Tracy CrimeStoppers attraction that almost came to be at Disney-MGM Studios (back when the park was still called that, before it made its name change to Disney’s Hollywood Studios). Check it out if you’re a fan of the movie or even just a fan of Imagineering concepts that never got the chance to live.

Some Universal bits:

A new constellation-themed parade has been announced for Universal Orlando’s Mardi Gras 2018.

Universal Studios Hollywood has discontinued its California Neighbor Pass.

Johnny Rockets at Universal CityWalk Hollywood has closed for refurbishment.

Finally, if you missed our article about it, an English theme park has built a wooden rollercoaster themed to the 1973 horror classic The Wicker Man. “Fusing wood with fire for the first time ever on a wooden roller coaster” sounds like a safe recipe …

Our galaxy’s second biggest black hole may be “lurking” in a gas cloud https://briefnews.eu/our-galaxys-second-biggest-black-hole-may-be-lurking-in-a-gas-cloud/ https://briefnews.eu/our-galaxys-second-biggest-black-hole-may-be-lurking-in-a-gas-cloud/#respond Thu, 07 Sep 2017 09:46:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/our-galaxys-second-biggest-black-hole-may-be-lurking-in-a-gas-cloud/

Enlarge / No, that’s not an oddly shaped black hole. It’s a molecular cloud, which absorbs most wavelengths of light, making it hard to see what’s inside. (credit: FORS Team, 8.2-meter VLT Antu, ESO)

The biggest object in our galaxy is remarkably difficult to see. The core of our galaxy houses a supermassive black hole that weighs in at over a million times our Sun’s mass. And when it’s actively feeding on matter, it should be very bright. Yet for years, all we knew was that there was some sort of radio source there.

Evidence of a black hole at the center of our galaxy came indirectly by tracking the orbit of a nearby star. This demonstrated that there had to be something extraordinarily heavy in a very small region of space, strengthening the case that the object was an immense black hole.

Now, researchers are making a similar case for what may be the second-biggest black hole in the Milky Way. The object appears to be buried in a gas cloud that’s keeping it obscured. But the gas itself is moving fast enough that calculations suggest that a 100,000 solar-mass black hole is holding it together. That would make the object an intermediate-mass black hole. While intermediate-mass black holes play a key role in many cosmological models, we have yet to confirm any actually exist.

Star Wars Land is Officially Called Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Other New Details [D23 Expo 2017] https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-land-is-officially-called-star-wars-galaxys-edge-and-other-new-details-d23-expo-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-land-is-officially-called-star-wars-galaxys-edge-and-other-new-details-d23-expo-2017/#respond Sat, 15 Jul 2017 23:20:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-land-is-officially-called-star-wars-galaxys-edge-and-other-new-details-d23-expo-2017/ star wars galaxy's edge 2

We’ve been calling Disney’s upcoming Star Wars land “Star Wars Land” by default, mainly because it hasn’t had an official name. Until now. At the theme park panel at this year’s D23, it was officially revealed that the immersive experience coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World will be called Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. With this news came a number of other tantalizing tidbits about what we can expect from this new land…including a fun cameo from a certain droid beloved to Disney fans.

Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Bob Chapek took the D23 stage to talk about the new theme park land, which is set in an isolated trading outpost in a galaxy far, far away, where the First Order and the Resistance are battling it out. After offering an up close and personal look at the expansive model on display on the D23 show floor, the details began to trickle out. Let’s run down the basics.

Chapek revealed that guests will have the chance to “ride inside a Star Destroyer” as part of the unnamed “escape” dark ride, which sees guests fleeing the First Order (and coming face-to-face with an AT-AT Walker).

RX-24, or as he’s more commonly known by fans, Rex, is back! The hapless droid who used to pilot your ship in the original incarnation of the Star Tours attraction has found his way to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, where he will serve as a cantina DJ. And since this is Rex we’re talking about, you know something is going to go wrong.

Concept art teased a moment between Chewbacca and Hondo from Star Wars Rebels, with the two of them shaking hands a making some sort of deal. As expected, you’ll be able to encounter the various heroes of the Star Wars universe…and the villains, too, as you “might feel the wrath of Kylo Ren.”

It seems that the meeting between Chewbacca and Hondo may be part of the much-hyped Millennium Falcon simulator attraction, which will place you in the cockpit of the famed spaceship. We’ve previously heard that guests will be able to impact the ride experience, piloting well or poorly, with varying results. The “hottest flight crews” can earn extra credits, but if you beat up the ship during your ride, a bounty hunter may come after you in the cantina.

The presentation didn’t focus on shops and souvenirs, but they did tease Doc Ondart and his “very unique collection,” so we can probably expect all kinds of trinkets and in-universe goodies to be available for purchase.

As expected, the Disneyland version will open before the Walt Disney World version does.

At D23 Expo 2015, Disney head Bob Iger announced that Star Wars-themed lands would be coming Disney’s theme parks at Disneyland Park at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The 14-acre lands would bring a new never before seen Star Wars planet to life, a “gateway planet located on the outer rim, full of places and characters familiar and not so familiar.” The world would be “occupied by many inhabitants; humanoids, aliens, and droids … the attractions, the entertainment, everything we create will be part of our storytelling. Nothing will be out of character or stray from the mythology.”

Described as a “remote frontier outpost,” the planet has existed within the canon “for thousands and thousands of years.” It used to be a vibrant spaceport, but since the advent of hyperspace, commerce has kind of fallen a little bit. At Star Wars Celebration 2017, Imagineers promised that guests would experience the most immersive theme park experience ever created. This is a crossroads in the galaxy, a place where all of us are welcomed as guests and visitors but for those of us wanting to delve deeper, there will be lots of opportunities.

You can help the Resistance, be recruited by a bounty hunter or smuggler for a side job, or even join the First Order. You will be able to explore, feel, smell, and taste the world of Star Wars. You can explore the streets and markets, buy strange meat concoctions, drinks in weird vessels, drink a glass of blue milk. One piece of concept art showed a Podracer engine which has been repurposed in a market restaurant to grill meat.

There will be a presence of the Resistance and the First Order, but also the inhabitants of the world who may not be of either affiliation. You’ll be able to engage with them, interact with them, and go on adventures with them. There are consequences to your actions in this world and on the rides. For example, if you bring the Millenium Falcon back heavily damaged, chances are someone will not be too happy about that. An experience might begin on the Falcon and follow you into the local watering hole. You will be able to build a reputation in the Star Wars universe that will follow you around.

The land will feature two attractions, a motion simulator ride that will put you and your small flight crew in control of the Millenium Falcon ride. The movement will be entirely up to you and your flight crew, each member of your team, has a different role. The other attraction is a dark ride which puts you in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

Disney Imagineering has also teased that they have created real-life lightsabers, which guests will be able to experience in their own hands. Disney previously filed patents that would allow guests to block blaster fire with a real light up lightsabers.

Construction on the parks began in April 2016, and both of the parks are scheduled to open in 2019.

On the eve before the Parks and Resort panel at D23 Expo 2017, it appears that the name of Disney’s upcoming Star Wars Land may have been prematurely revealed. Find out more below.

A few hours ago, an eagle-eyed Redditor noticed that the source code for a post on the official Disney Parks Blog seemed to reveal the official name of Star Wars Land as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Let’s look at the evidence.

First of all, if you type “Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge” into Google, complete with the quotations around it to create a more specific search, the first result is the official Disney Parks website:

Star Wars Galaxy's Edge

Secondly, if you look at that page’s source code, you’ll find this line in there as an alt tag in the HTML:

starwarsland-sourcecode-galaxysedge

Previously it was rumored that Disney was thinking of calling the new lands, which are being constructed in Anaheim and Orlando, The Star Wars Experience. This name sounds a lot more cool, and it jibes with the concept of the park itself since the land is supposed to be a remote outpost of the edge of known space in the Star Wars universe. This kind of name also implies that we could get other Star Wars additions in the future with more sections being called Star Wars: Insert Name Here, not unlike how there’s the Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley sections in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

However, even if this title turns out to be the official name (which won’t be confirmed until the Parks and Resort panel at D23 tomorrow afternoon), we still don’t know what the planet will be called where this outpost exists in the Star Wars universe.

No matter what the name of the Star Wars Land at Disney parks is going to be, it will be positively huge when it opens. I know I’m already anticipated choosing a side in the Star Wars universe, either as a member of the Resistance or the First Order. Plus, being able to fly the Millennium Falcon is a lifelong dream that will finally be realized, not to mention the chance at drinking some tasty blue milk

Anyway, the D23 Expo is in full swing and we’ll have more details on Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge (if that is the real name) when the Parks and Resort panel unfolds tomorrow afternoon. Stay tuned for all our D23 coverage on the way.
