A tense day in which fortunes were evenly balanced saw England close at 196-4 with honours just about even and Dawid Malan (28no) and Moeen Ali (13no) holding firm when bad light stopped the day 15 minutes early.

But it could have been much worse had Vince, who hit a gutsy 83 – comfortably eclipsing his previous Test best of 42 – and fellow Ashes rookie Mark Stoneman, not recovered so well from the loss of Alastair Cook in the third over of the day.

That early breakthrough, Mitchell Starc grabbing the key wicket after England had won the toss and elected to bat, left the tourists rocking early and nerves fraying.

And that despite a wicket which offered less bounce and venom than Australia would have liked.

Yet Vince and Stoneman were patient, refusing to take bait offered, waiting for bad balls and rebuilding England’s innings.

Vince made best use of his elegant off drives but he also needed the  odd slice of luck and was dropped on 68 by wicketkeeper Tim Paine off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.

However his luck was to run out, perhaps predictably at the hands of Lyon again when he was approaching the foothills of a maiden Test century.

Lyon had had much to say about England in the build up with his comments about “ending careers” fuelling plenty of pre-Ashes trash talk and response.

But the spinner backed up his words with deeds, just about shading the express bowling trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, as Australia’s best bowler with 0-40 from 24 overs.

And it was his stunning pick and throw from point to run out Vince after the England No 3 called Joe Root through for a quick single which ignited the day.

The run out was a disappointing end to an excellent innings from Vince, particularly given the doubts expressed in many quarters about his selection for the Ashes in the first place.

More importantly, both his and Stoneman’s efforts filled England’s line-up with the belief that there were no demons in the pitch or in Aussie ranks.

Stoneman was second man down, bowled by Cummins to leave England 127-2 and captain Root sandwiched the dismissal of Vince when falling lbw to the same man to leave England 163-4, the decision overturning a not out verdict on the field.

At that stage Australia scented blood in the water but Dawid Malan recovered from a nervy start to take the fight back to Australia towards the close of play.

With Moeen for company the pair took the score to the foothills just short of 200 before bad light intervened.

The Gabba deck seemed to lack its renowned pace and bounce early on Thursday and Australia’s much-hyped fast bowlers struggled to adapt.

While Mitchell Starc claimed Alastair Cook (two) early, little-known batsmen Mark Stoneman and James Vince piled on a 125-run partnership for the second wicket.

Josh Hazlewood was well below his best and England was mostly untroubled by Pat Cummins until he rattled Stoneman’s middle stump.

TIM PAINE: Smooth as silk, then clunk

Mitchell, preparing his 27th and final Test wicket before retirement, said unseasonably mild temperatures in Brisbane were the reason for the slower wicket, but the pitch was not too different to what he usually prepares.

“It’s pretty standard,” he told Ashes Extras.

“It was a touch slower than normal in the morning, otherwise it’s a pretty reasonable batting wicket I’d imagine.

“It’s nearly summer isn’t it? It didn’t feel like summer last night. You’ve generally got 30-degree (days) and it hasn’t been anything like that this week.

“I think it’s a reasonable standard. The Poms have batted pretty well.”

It says a lot about Australia’s bowling that off-spinner Nathan Lyon was the pick of the bowlers on a pitch that favours quicks on day one.

“It’s always a new ball wicket and that’s the way it is,” Mitchell said.

“It will quicken up a little bit as the game goes on.”

KP backs Cook

ENGLAND opener Alastair Cook has found an unlikely ally in former teammate Kevin Pietersen.

Cook is under pressure to fire in this series as England’s senior batsman and fell for two in the third over yesterday at the Gabba.

The former Test captain is playing his 148th match for England and is adapting to life as just another player in the team after relinquishing the captaincy in February.

Cook and Pietersen fell out spectacularly over the decision to banish the latter from the national team.

However Pietersen refused to call for the axing of his former skipper, who has been in a rough patch of form recently.

“It’s up to him to decide,” Pietersen said when asked if Cook should retire.

“He’s had such a good career. When you’ve played 140-odd Test matches it’s up to you to decide when you want to go.

“He’s been such a great servant of the game for England and scored that many runs.

“It’s about how he can motivate himself to keep scoring the runs. This series is a series where England need him to score a hell of a lot of runs.”

Cook scored a marvellous 243 against the West Indies in August but has failed to pass 23 in his past five Test innings and was poor in England’s warm-up matches.

Skull leaves it late

TRIPLE M took a hit in the cricket radio wars on Thursday when star commentator Kerry O’Keeffe was late to the Gabba.

O’Keeffe, with his unique storytelling and infectious laugh, is the jewel in the FM station’s crown and known as “captain” of the commentary team.

But he missed one of the most popular sessions on the cricket calendar following a travel mishap.

“I did a gig in Albury (in country NSW on Wednesday night),” O’Keeffe said.

“I got up at 3.45am for a 6.30am flight and they said ‘sorry sir your flight’s been cancelled’.

“The next (flight) was 10am. Here I am.”

Triple M and ABC Grandstand are highly competitive and O’Keeffe’s absence would not have helped their ratings.

Paine reneges on ‘Garry’ vow

AUSSIE wicketkeeper Tim Paine must have got caught up in the moment on Thursday.

Paine, a controversial selection given he has not been keeping for Tasmania, said he would not try to mimic former Test gloveman Matthew Wade’s chatter when spinner Nathan Lyon is bowling.

Wade’s “Nice, Garry” chants transformed Lyon into a cult hero last summer, but Paine was not keen to carry on the tradition.

“It doesn’t come naturally to me,” Paine said during the week.

However he couldn’t help it when he was behind the stumps in front of a sold-out Gabba crowd.

“Nice, Gazza,” Paine could be heard saying on stump mic.

“Bowling, Garry.”

Paine didn’t endear himself to the crowd though when he dropped a regulation catch off Lyon’s bowling.

USMAN Khawaja wasn’t the only Queenslander wearing whites at the Gabba on Thursday.

The Aussies drafted in three Queensland players to act as substitute fielders.

At the top of the list was Bulls and Heat allrounder Jason Floros, regarded as one of the state’s best fielders.

Floros is a former Australian under-19 player and his brothers Matt, Benji and Tim were in the Australian Indoor team that won the World Cup earlier this year.

Gold Coast rookie Matthew Kuhnemann was also in the mix along with rising Norths allrounder Nathan McSweeney.

England captain Joe Root confident of breaking Australia's Gabba stronghold in first Test https://briefnews.eu/england-captain-joe-root-confident-of-breaking-australias-gabba-stronghold-in-first-test/ https://briefnews.eu/england-captain-joe-root-confident-of-breaking-australias-gabba-stronghold-in-first-test/#respond Wed, 22 Nov 2017 12:18:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/england-captain-joe-root-confident-of-breaking-australias-gabba-stronghold-in-first-test/

Brisbane’s famous venue, nicknamed The Gabbatoir for its ferocious atmosphere, has not seen a home defeat in 28 matches spanning 29 years.

But the England captain insisted his side have the personnel to emerge with a first Ashes win there since 1986 to put their hosts on the back foot going to the day-night Test in Adelaide.

“We are going to go out there to try and upset that [record] and we fully believe we are more than capable of doing that,” said a bullish Root.

“It would certainly put them under a lot of pressure because they haven’t lost here for such a long period of time and that is our main goal.

“But to do that we have to make sure we are absolutely ready. If we get our heads around that we will be in a really good place after five days.”

England are understood to have finalised their line-up for the series opener with Jake Ball recovered from his ankle sprain and set to be confirmed in a four-man seam unit.

But they are considering swapping around Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow with the off-spinning all-rounder a possibility to leapfrog the wicketkeeper to No6 in the order.

Moeen insisted he was yet to be told where he will bat but was happy to help out at any place in the order from five to eight. And he fully backed up his captain’s hopes when it came to landing the early victory.

“There is genuine confidence that we can win here,” he said. “It’s going to be tough for us but records are there to be broken and hopefully we can do that.

“We have guys who’ve batted well here before. It would be great to come away with a win and get a good start to the series.”

England downplayed suggestions in Australia that Ben Stokes, currently awaiting the outcome of a police investigation into an incident in Bristol in late September, was any closer to joining up with the squad. A spokesman for the side insisted there was “no change” in the all-rounder’s situation.

However Root did call on his players to step up and fill the gap left by his absence.

“It’s very difficult to replace Ben Stokes, but rather than replacing him it’s more important the guys bring the best version of themselves out there and not try to replicate something he would do,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity for everyone to step up and do special things like Ben can do on the field. We’re all capable of doing it in our own way so this week is a chance for someone to go out and do that.”

Green Gabba is pitch perfect https://briefnews.eu/green-gabba-is-pitch-perfect/ https://briefnews.eu/green-gabba-is-pitch-perfect/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 10:26:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/green-gabba-is-pitch-perfect/ THE Gabba is back to its bouncy, green best despite the attempts of Pommy singer Adele to sabotage Australia’s cricket fortress.

Curator Kevin Mitchell Jnr has prepared a classic Gabba greentop for the final time which has England’s suspect batsmen on notice.

The famed Gabba wicket underwent a complete resurfacing following Adele’s knockout concert in March which chewed up the turf.

ASHES: Aussies sweating on Warner

WARNER ON STOKES:‘He’s let a lot of people down’

Australia has not lost a Test in Brisbane since 1988 and there were concerns over how their favourite wicket would recover from a major overhaul.

However Mitchell, who will retire following his 27th Test in charge, said the Gabba of old has bounced back.

“It’s very similar to the past,” he said ahead of Thursday’s first day.

“It’ll have a tinge of green which they normally do first day. There will be some sideways movement early and some seam and then settle down into a pretty good batting deck.

“We’re expecting everything to play pretty well. Obviously we had to returf which takes a bit of time to establish but we think we’re pretty right.

“It was a really good bouncy deck in the Shield game that we had (last month).”

Australia has an affinity with the Gabba and Mitchell has helped prepare every wicket throughout their unbeaten run over the past 29 years.

His father, Kevin Mitchell Snr, was the head curator for Australia’s last loss to the West Indies and told his son to never make the same mistake twice.

Mitchell has never felt pressured to prepare a certain type of pitch, which often happens in the subcontinent, and said Australia felt comfortable starting the summer in Brisbane.

“We’ve prepared what we generally do,” he said.

“The weather serves up a few challenges here and there but I think the Aussies seem to feel comfortable here. They know what to expect.

“I’m pretty happy with that.”

Aussie batsman Peter Handscomb said the Gabba was a unique pitch which England had to overcome if they were to win in Brisbane for the first time since 1986.

“It’s pretty fast and bouncy,” he said.

“That doesn’t happen too much in England.

“Our bowlers are flying in at the moment. They (England batters) will probably get a few around the ears and a couple of quick ones as well. It’s going to be entertaining.”

Mitchell said the pitch for this Test was the same used when Queensland won its historic first Sheffield Shield crown in 1995, a match that remains the highlight of his career.

FRUSTRATION has quickly turned to focus for the Brisbane women’s team going into Saturday’s AFLW grand final against Adelaide at Metricon Stadium.

The undefeated Lions may be the innocent casualties of the Gabba turf war that sent the inaugural decider to the Gold Coast but they do not intend to play victim.

Forward Kaitlyn Ashmore said the venue issue was quickly put to bed by Lions senior coach Craig Starcevich at a team meeting and the side would channel their disappointment into a positive performance against the Crows.

“It was pretty frustrating at the time because we earned the right to play on our home ground and it was only five days before the game when we found out where we were playing,’’ she said.

“The not knowing was the most frustrating thing but at the end of the day, the game is still in Queensland and we can put all of that stuff to the back of our minds and concentrate on the game which is all that matters now.

Kaitlyn Ashmore insists the team will channel their disappointment about not playing at The Gabba into a positive performance against the Crows.

“Starce has been really good about it. We spoke about it all and we have all moved on.’’

The most pressing concern for Ashmore and the Lions is preventing another fourth quarter fade out like the one that cost them victory against Carlton last Sunday.

“I don’t know whether it was some of the girls thinking about the grand final or not. We were on a roll and led by four goals with six minutes to play and we switched off,’’ she said.

“Everyone was disappointed. It was still a draw but it felt like a loss.

“We know Adelaide will come out really hard at us and keep it going for the full four quarters. There will be no let-up and we have to match it.’’

The Lions have also been wasteful in front of goal, with their inaccuracy keeping the Bulldogs closer than they deserved to be in Round 6 while Brisbane would have kept the Blues at bay had they kicked straight at Ikon Park.

“We have struggled a bit to use the ball once we get it into our forward line. We do have lapses but all we can do is focus on the things we do well like defensive pressure and hopefully the other things will come,’’ Ashmore said.

The Lions were forced to move last night’s training session from Yeronga to QSAC due to wet weather which could also play a role in the decider, with rain forecast for Saturday.

THE GABBA could get a drop-in wicket after Sports Minister Mick de Brenni backed the idea as a way of avoiding future clashes between AFL and cricket.

The centre square of Brisbane’s iconic ground will undergo a rigorous independent assessment this week to determine if it is fit to host the inaugural AFLW grand final next Saturday without affecting the traditionally bouncy wicket for the first Ashes Test match in November.

Cricketing officials claimed last week’s Adele concert nearly ruined the wicket square.

Mr de Brenni said Queensland had the technology and skill needed to curate a drop-in wicket, similar to the MCG and other Australian grounds.

“We’ve got the best technological advice, the best ground skills, we’ve got the best stadium management, we’ve got the best facilities in the nation, so there’s no reason why we can’t have the most up-to-date, cutting-edge innovations like the type of drop-in pitches we are seeing,” he said.

Chief curator Kevin Mitchell Jr said the wicket square needed six weeks without any traffic over it for the replanted area to take root, which would rule out an AFLW grand final along with the first two Brisbane Lions home games of the 2017 premiership season.

The Lions are desperate to play at the Gabba for their first home game in Round 2 against Essendon.

However, Mr de Brenni played down the damage to the centre wicket, saying the ground was in great shape due to weeks of prior preparation to ensure The Gabba wicket would be fit for play in time for the AFLW grand final on Saturday.

A leading Brisbane curator supported Mr Mitchell’s claims, saying any regrassed wicket square required six to eight weeks rest before any traffic was to go over it.

Despite the first Ashes Test being eight months away, curators say it is vital for pitches that are going to be used during the summer to be rested and have the correct top dressing applied over the winter period.

A Stadium Queensland spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that we do not currently have the infrastructure to install and maintain a drop-in wicket, and there are no current plans to install one.”

Queensland Cricket last night said they would not be commenting on the issue.

CA AWAITS REPORT ON STATE OF GABBA TURF

CRICKET Australia says it will await in good faith a report on the grass growth at the Gabba to be commissioned by Stadiums Queensland later this week.

This is despite State Sports Minister Mick De Brenni’s assertion that the turf was “on track” to stage the AFL women’s grand final on Saturday week at the Gabba and then two AFL men’s matches next month.

The State Government said it had commissioned its own report from another specialist who would inspect the turf on Friday.

A CA spokesman said that a meeting with SQ executives had been productive and it awaited the independent report.

The AFL received a positive report about the state of the grass from its own turf expert, who examined the surface on Wednesday and said the AFLW grand final could be played at the Gabba.

State Minister for Communities, Women and Youth Shannon Fentiman last week said that the Lions women’s team should be allowed to play their grand final there.

Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann said the Gabba curators had done an outstanding job on work on the turf since the Adele concerts and the ground would be in good condition for the Saturday week grand final featuring the Lions women’s team.

“There’s 253 days until the Ashes Test at the Gabba in November — I’m certain that’s plenty of time to get the grass right by then,” Swann said.
