Developer Q&A site Stack Overflow performs an annual survey to find out more about the programmer community, and the latest set of results has just been published.
JavaScript remains the most widely used programming language among professional developers, making that six years at the top for the lingua franca of Web development. Other Web tech including HTML (#2 in the ranking), CSS (#3), and PHP (#9). Business-oriented languages were also in wide use, with SQL at #4, Java at #5, and C# at #8. Shell scripting made a surprising showing at #6 (having not shown up at all in past years, which suggests that the questions have changed year-to-year), Python appeared at #7, and systems programming stalwart C++ rounded out the top 10.
These aren’t, however, the languages that developers necessarily want to use. Only three languages from the most-used top ten were in the most-loved list; Python (#3), JavaScript (#7), and C# (#8). For the third year running, that list was topped by Rust, the new systems programming language developed by Mozilla. Second on the list was Kotlin, which wasn’t even in the top 20 last year. This new interest is likely due to Google’s decision last year to bless the language as an official development language for Android. TypeScript, Microsoft’s better JavaScript than JavaScript comes in at fourth, with Google’s Go language coming in at fifth. Smalltalk, last year’s second-most loved, is nowhere to be seen this time around.

Vascularized engineered human liver tissue that has self-organized into a lobule-like microstructure. (credit: Chelsea Fortin/Bhatia Lab/Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research)
Being able to grow your own new organs may be in reach—with some cellular assembly required.
With a carefully constructed clump of cells, mice grew their own functional human liver organoids in a matter of months, researchers report this week in Science Translational Medicine. The cellular organ seeds blossomed in the rodents, expanding 50-fold in that time. They appeared to form complex liver structures, tap into vasculature, and carry out the functions of a normal liver. The critical factor in getting the organoids to take root, the authors report, was having the seed cells arranged just right.
Though the organ seeds are far from any clinical application, researchers are hopeful that they’ll one day be able to engineer larger liver organs to treat patients with liver failure or damage.

In a statement sent to media outlets on Tuesday night, Samsung confirmed that the AI helper will not support voice commands when it launches alongside the company’s flagship Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ phones on April 21. The company says you won’t be able to talk to Bixby until “later this spring.”
The assistant’s other features — including a “Bixby Vision” tool that can identify real-world objects and display related info onscreen, a “Bixby Home” tool that serves up Google-like info cards, and a “Bixby Reminder” tool that helps you set, well, reminders — will still be available at launch, according to Samsung.
Samsung did not immediately respond to a comment on the reason for the delay. It’s worth noting, however, that we ran into bugs as recently as two weeks ago when previewing the new Galaxy S8.
It’s also worth noting that, conceptually, Samsung has not pitched Bixby as a one-to-one competitor to other popular voice helpers like Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and Google’s Google Assistant. Those companies have spent the past few years building out such assistants in the hopes that they will be the next dominant interfaces for personal computing.
Business InsiderHere, though, Samsung mostly wants Bixby to make navigating its phones less complicated. The idea is to call on Bixby when you want to, say, change your screen brightness, or find a specific photo within your camera roll. That won’t be possible until a future update now.
Nevertheless, with the more capable Google Assistant pre-loaded onto the phone by default — and with limited language support to start — Bixby’s staggered launch will not do it any favors out of the gate. Samsung will then have to deal with the AI’s more existential problems, namely convincing app developers to lend their support and expanding onto other devices, in the future. Either way, this is clearly a work in progress.
We’ve found the new Galaxy phones to be promising on their own, but Samsung had pitched Bixby as one of their trademark features to the point where it built a dedicated Bixby button onto the side of the devices. Though it is possible to map that button to open another app, the workaround is a bit technical, which means that many Galaxy owners will be left with a shortcut to a limited AI on their new, pricey phones for at least a few weeks.
We’ll have a full review of the Galaxy S8 soon, so stay tuned.

BenQ’s WiT LED Lamp is easy on the eyes in so many ways.
The WiT lamp is a beautifully designed conversation piece. Intuitive controls let you turn the lamp on and off with a touch or fully adjust brightness and temperature with a single knob. The WiT can be angled in any direction, but you won’t need to do much, as the curved design of the light source easily illuminates every inch of your work or gaming space.
Small touches like a braided cable make the WiT feel even more premium, and the heavy base creates an elevated surface for some of your desk accoutrement.
Optional accessories let you clamp the lamp to save desk space or turn it into a floor lamp.
The BenQ WiT is a joy to work or game under. I may even buy a second one to put by the couch.

Biomedical researchers have created a novel way of overcoming one of the biggest hurdles to the regeneration of human tissue in a lab by using spinach leaves to build working heart tissue.
The demand for organs and tissues for transplantation far exceeds availability. In the US, 22 people die each day while waiting for an organ or tissue to become available. To address the shortage, scientists have been working on growing various tissues and whole organs in the lab.

The difficulty of establishing a vascular system which can deliver blood deep into developing tissue is one of the major stumbling blocks preventing scientists from growing new human tissue and organs in a laboratory.
Current methods have been unsuccessful in building the branching network of blood vessels essential for delivering the oxygen, nutrients, and molecules required for healthy tissue growth.
However, a team of scientists from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), in Massachusetts, has managed to convert a spinach leaf into living heart tissue, taking advantage of the network of veins that already exist in the plant naturally and using them to transport blood.

“Plants and animals exploit fundamentally different approaches to transporting fluids, chemicals, and macromolecules, yet there are surprising similarities in their vascular network structures,” the introduction to the scientific paper reads.
The researchers bought spinach in a local market and stripped the leaves of its green plant material, leaving only the fine cellulose structure that holds the leaf together. In a series of experiments, they successfully grew beating human heart cells on the leaves.
The study, which will be published in the May edition of the journal Biomaterials, opens the door to potentially using multiple spinach leaves to grow layers of healthy heart muscle to treat heart attack patients.
The paper’s first author Joshua Gershlak explained that the idea for the experiment came to him when the spinach leaf system reminded him “of an aorta”: “So I thought, let’s perfuse right through the stem. We weren’t sure it would work, but it turned out to be pretty easy and replicable.”
“It’s working in many other plants,” he added.

In addition to spinach leaves, the team successfully removed cells from parsley, sweet wormwood and peanut hairy roots. They expect the technique will work with many plant species that could be adapted for tissue regeneration studies.
“The spinach leaf might be better suited for a highly vascularized tissue, like cardiac tissue… Conversely, the vascular columns of wood might be useful in bone engineering due to their relative strength and geometries,” the study notes.
“We have a lot more work to do, but so far this is very promising,”said Glenn Gaudette, professor of biomedical engineering at WPI. “Adapting abundant plants that farmers have been cultivating for thousands of years for use in tissue engineering could solve a host of problems limiting the field.”
The Turn Touch remote control is the invention of Samuel Clay, a prolific coder, artist, and photographer who lives in San Francisco and is prone to creating things like interactive biofeedback installations at Burning Man or hand-coded light-up dresses. His remote control is the natural extension of his coding projects which include a news reader called NewsBlur and the Internet of Things controls that integrate with the Turn Touch Remote Control.
The most immediate difference the Turn Touch has from a traditional remote control is that it’s manufactured from solid hardwoods and inlaid with mother of pearl. Rather than trying to come up with a complex locking system, Clay sealed the circuitry between the two halves of the remote with powerful magnets. It’s offered in three distinct styles: mahogany and maple, padauk and satinwood, and rosewood and sycamore. A standard CR2032 battery (the same battery in an Apple TV remote) powers it for up to 12 months.
The second thing you notice is that it only has four buttons. The reason for that is that Turn Touch integrates seamlessly with televisions and IoT-connected devices through customizable apps for iOS and MacOS. Each button controls an app, double-tapping controls different functions, and holding a button switches between apps. The remote doesn’t yet work with Android or Apple’s Homekit, although the latter is a likely candidate for updates.
Better yet, each button can be customized to manage multiple functions — meaning a single button tap could potentially turn off the television and lights, lock the doors, and set the temperature. Clay has programmed the Turn Touch to work with a variety of smart devices including media players iTunes, Sonos, Spotify and Pandora and hardware like Philips Hue and Lifx lights, Belkin Wemo power switches, and Nest thermostats. Clay has also pre-seeded his app system with apps dedicated to fitness, news, time and productivity.

As to why the Turn Touch remote control doesn’t integrate with voice commands, the website has a simple explanation: “Sure, voice control is handy. But often you’ll find yourself shouting just to be heard. Or, even worse, repeating yourself three times every time you want to turn on the lights. When voice control misunderstands you, you’re left frustrated and in the dark. We’d like you to stop screaming at light switches.”
Clay is still rolling out the Kickstarter products to backers. He intends to start tooling the remotes in April with delivery to all backers by November. There is no word yet on when the Turn Touch Remote might reach retail, where the different models will sell between $ 89 and $ 129.
