While speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was asked a question that comes up all the time — will Twitter ever roll out an edit feature? Dorsey has acknowledged the possibility of such a function in the past, and like before, his recent comments on the topic noted that while the company has been considering an edit function, it would want to be sure it was implemented in the right way.

“When we hear about the edit button, you have to pay attention not to what people are asking you for but the use cases,” Dorsey said. “What’s the question behind the question? And a lot of people want edit because they make mistakes on Twitter and they want to quickly fix them. They don’t want to look bad.” Dorsey used the examples of tweeting the wrong URL or including a typo. “So that’s a lot more achievable than allowing people to edit any tweet all the way back in time,” he said.

Dorsey’s comments make it sound like Twitter is open to an edit feature that would let users quickly correct a mistake. But more substantial edits, like ones that change the meaning of a tweet, appear to be what has kept the company from introducing an edit function so far. As an example, Dorsey presented a situation where one person tweets something that’s then retweeted by those that agree with the statement, but the original tweeter then edits their tweet to the point where those who’ve retweeted the post no longer agree with it. “And that’s what we need to prevent,” said Dorsey.

As for potential solutions to that problem, Dorsey mentioned change logs that would display how a tweet has been changed. “But ultimately we need to make sure we’re solving a real problem,” he said. “We’ve been considering edit for quite some time, but we have to do it the right way. We can’t just rush it out, and we have to make sure that we’re actually solving the predominant reason why people would do it, first and foremost. And then not making something that’s distracting or takes away from the public record in doing so, because I think it’s really critical that we preserve that.”

Like other social networks, Twitter has had a problem with manipulative content and hoaxes. Last month, it tweaked its reporting process so that users can specify when they’re reporting fake accounts and malicious links.

  • 180 degrees isn’t always the ideal angle for you to get your best night’s sleep.
  • Luckily, with the Nectar adjustable bed frame, you don’t have to lie entirely horizontally when you lie down to go to bed.
  • This new bed frame allows you to decide for yourself what angle works best for your nightly repose, whether that’s entirely supine, or with your legs or back just a little bit elevated.
  • While the bed frame works best with its companion Nectar mattress (which you can learn more about in our buying guide to the best mattresses for side sleepers), it can also play nice with the mattress that you have at home (provided it’s flexible enough to do a little bit of bending).

If you’ve ever fallen asleep in your favorite recliner, or sometimes prefer the comfort of  your easy chair to your own mattress, you know that 180 degrees isn’t always ideal. But instead of banishing yourself to the cramped space of an armchair, you can in fact return to the luxury of space available in your king-sized bed, all while maintaining control over the angles at which you catch some z’s. And it’s all thanks to Nectar, the bed-in-a-box brand that isn’t just delivering comfortable mattresses, but also adjustable bed frames.

Avengers Infinity War: Tom Holland explains Spider-Man KILL function and NEW Iron Man role https://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-tom-holland-explains-spider-man-kill-function-and-new-iron-man-role/ https://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-tom-holland-explains-spider-man-kill-function-and-new-iron-man-role/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 21:30:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/avengers-infinity-war-tom-holland-explains-spider-man-kill-function-and-new-iron-man-role/

Fans are very worried some of their favourite heroes might die in Avengers 3.

Spider-Man is shown being hurled to the ground and pinned under Thanos’ mighty fist.

Surely Peter Parker won’t pay the ultimate price? Can’t he just use that terrifying ‘Instant Kill Function’ on his suit, especially with all the new incredible upgrades?

Tom Holland explained all on the red carpet in London recently.

The young British star told Hey U Guys: “I don’t actually think the Instant Kill function does what everyone thinks it does.

“I think it simply just shuts off electricity. I actually don’t think it’s a killing-like piece of tech. I don’t think it is to murder people. I don’t think Tony Stark’s that dark…Well, maybe he is, who knows? I don’t know if Instant Kill would work against Thanos.”

It’s certainly unlikely that the most powerful being in the galaxy would be taken down by one piece of tech.

The new Spidey suit is another upgraded gift from Tony Stark and Holland also revealed how tier relationship will grow and change.

Holland added: “The bond they have formed over the past two movies is pretty strong and I think Tony has a great deal of responsibility for Peter and his actions…

“Although I do think Peter may grate on Tony Stark a little bit more in this movie which is fun… Our relationship definitely blossoms more.”

The grating may explain why Holland bonded most with another star on set, instead.

He said: “Chris Pratt and I became very close. He’s really funny, he’s such a sweet guy.

“He’s so talented, the way he navigates around the set and treats everyone he’s a real role model for me. We’ve become very close. He was in London the other day and I took him out for a drink.”

Delta Air's designer uniforms take flight in May – are they more function than fashion? https://briefnews.eu/delta-airs-designer-uniforms-take-flight-in-may-are-they-more-function-than-fashion/ https://briefnews.eu/delta-airs-designer-uniforms-take-flight-in-may-are-they-more-function-than-fashion/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 05:38:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/delta-airs-designer-uniforms-take-flight-in-may-are-they-more-function-than-fashion/

Zac Posen, the designer who has seen a whole host of stars flaunt his creations down the red carpet and who even has Michelle Obama, the former first lady, on the list, has now turned his attention to a project a little more, practical.

Out with the gowns and in with the straight cut suits and silk ties, Posen has created a series of uniforms for Delta Airlines.

Now 60,000 staff around the world will be kitted out in his creations rather than only those that can afford him.

This will be the first time in 10 years that the US airline has introduced a new dress code.

Whether they are yet to be the most ‘stylish’ is still to be decided as the uniforms will be released later in the year.

To gauge the functionality of the workwear, Zac spent time shadowing the Delta airline crew.

From flight assisting to working with the ground teams, he clocked in with over 1,000 Delta staff trying and testing each design.

According to the Delta News Hub, the uniforms were altered and changed more than 165 times before the final designs were signed off.

“Delta stands out from the competition because of our unparalleled customer service, and that’s what we look for when partnering with other brands,” said Ekrem Dimbiloglu, Delta Director of Uniforms.

“We couldn’t be happier about the role Delta people played in getting these uniforms right,” Dimbiloglu added.

“When we started this journey almost three years ago, we committed to leveraging employee feedback in every aspect of the new uniform program. And, when the Zac Posen team came on board, they were excited for the chance to create something that transforms the brand and incorporates thoughtful touches and changes from the very people who wear the uniforms every day.”

Whilst sticking to the formality of a uniform such as those worn by cabin crew members, Delta explains that the new uniform fuses bold colour palettes with classic style whilst sticking true to the iconic design that has been worn by Delta employees for decades.

The female cabin crew will all sport a variety of plum whilst the male flight attendants will wear three-piece suits in graphite with plum detailing.

This is a shift away from their iconic bright red uniforms – although this colour scheme won’t be sidelined completely.

The new uniforms will take to the skies from the 29 May 2018 with Zac’s “passport plum” taking to the skies.

Although the uniforms don’t quite square up to his usual A-lister designs, the Delta crew will make quite the impression when walking through the departures lounge.

  • Shares of Facebook are down 4.3% in trading Friday after the social network announced it would once again alter its news feed algorithm to prioritize content from users’ friends rather than brand or publisher pages.
  • “We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on his Facebook page Thursday, as part of an announcement regarding the company’s focus on “meaningful interaction.” His 2018 resolution was to fix systemic problems on the site, like harassment.
  • The move is worrying for publishers, many of which have expressed concern, as the feed is a massive source of traffic and revenue for them.
  • Longtime Facebook bull analyst Scott Devitt of Stifel downgraded the stock from buy to hold after the news broke, citing the uncertainty related to pending changes and saying was incrementally cautious. JPMorgan, which has an overweight rating, said earlier that the change could bring “near-term weakness.”
  • Facebook stock has gained 48% over the last year, and could grow another 18% to $ 213, analysts polled by Bloomberg predict. The company will report earnings on January 31.

How Genesis Made the G80 Sport’s Form Match Its Function https://briefnews.eu/how-genesis-made-the-g80-sports-form-match-its-function/ https://briefnews.eu/how-genesis-made-the-g80-sports-form-match-its-function/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 06:36:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-genesis-made-the-g80-sports-form-match-its-function/ genesis-g80-syndo-103

Automotive design goes deeper than styling. Scoops, vents, and inlets aren’t always just styling cues; they can be functional elements to improve performance. The automotive world’s most successful designers and engineers seem to agree. Before iconic cars can take shape, they need to have a clear purpose.

–

That’s why, when brand-new contemporary luxury brand Genesis was ready to launch its first true sports sedan, it turned to history for guidance. Turning a refined car like the G80 into the 365-hp twin-turbocharged G80 Sport was no small feat; matching its form to function was a similarly taxing accomplishment.

–

Compared to a G80 lineup composed of sedans designed to provide effortless comfort and performance, the G80 Sport needed to stand out. These subtle but important changes would ensure the car’s exterior and interior help reinforce the performance and ability the Sport name suggests. We spoke with the folks responsible for making it happen.

–

–

“

–

It’s a holistic design treatment that a legacy luxury brand might never attempt.
–

”

–

–

Take a Second Look

–

At first glance, the G80 Sport is identifiable as a member of the greater G80 family, but set apart enough to have a key visual persona of its own. Subtlety guided the distinctive look of the G80 Sport, according to Yuval Steiman, senior group manager for Genesis product strategy.

–

“The mandate to those developing the G80 Sport was to maintain the core character of the G80 while adding aggressive, performance-oriented elements from both a design and engineering standpoint,” Steiman told us. “G80 Sport design elements are easily recognizable, but at the same time they are not [designed to be] garish or over the top.”

–

genesis-g80-syndo-106

–

Understated finesse of detail defines the differences between the G80 and G80 Sport models. Where some automakers overuse chrome and shiny finishes to draw attention to styling elements, Genesis chose to use muted and dark finishes to subtly differentiate the Sport from the rest of the G80 line. Hints of black and gray dominate exterior accents, from the wing mirrors to the effects on rear and side lighting. Even the LED headlamps, despite their family resemblance, are unique to the G80 Sport.

–

genesis-g80-syndo-101

–

“We felt there was an opportunity to elevate the performance attributes of G80 while also adding distinctively sporty and aggressive styling enhancements,” Steiman said.

–

Copper-Bottomed Luxury

–

The hue that acts as a motif inside and out on the G80 Sport is copper: an unexpected, warm choice for a signature accent.

–

“The copper elements that are found throughout the vehicle—headlamps, wheel caps, seat stitching—provide a consistent design theme that differentiates the G80 Sport,” Steiman said.

–

genesis-g80-syndo-104

–

Look closely, and you’ll see brownish-orange hints hidden in and around the G80 Sport’s honeycomb grille. Copper also makes an appearance on the aforementioned center caps of the 19-inch wheels, which feature a darker finish for effect.

–

genesis-g80-syndo-102

–

Following suit, the G80 Sport’s interior is characterized by a restrained call for attention. Copper-colored stitching lines the passenger compartment, both on the seats and the steering wheel. Whispers of aluminum and carbon fiber add more than a modicum of elegant sophistication without feeling over-the-top.

–

–

What’s Your Function?

–

To bolster the case that the G80 Sport means business as a sports sedan, designers and engineers collaborated to showcase its most powerful and prominent features. Those attributes are led by the twin-turbocharged V-6—which offers performance comparable to a V-8, but with better efficiency while cruising—and supplemented by changes to the G80’s chassis. They’re upgrades that serious drivers will feel every time they settle in behind the wheel and assess the G80 Sport’s capabilities on their favorite roads.

–

genesis-g80-syndo-105

–

Functionally, as the G80 Sport was intended to stand out as Genesis’ first performance model, the balance of styling changes to dynamic improvements is harmonious. The individual elements that comprise the G80 Sport form more than just an appearance package. It creates a different character altogether.

AI needs a human touch to function at its highest level https://briefnews.eu/ai-needs-a-human-touch-to-function-at-its-highest-level/ https://briefnews.eu/ai-needs-a-human-touch-to-function-at-its-highest-level/#respond Fri, 22 Sep 2017 01:08:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ai-needs-a-human-touch-to-function-at-its-highest-level/

There is an old saying that speaks to the current state of AI: “To someone holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” As companies, governments, and organizations scramble to be in the vanguard of this new generation of artificial intelligence, they are trying their best to persuade everyone that all of our human shortcomings will be absolved by this technological evolution. But what exactly will it solve? Machine learning is an incredibly powerful tool, but, like any other tool, it requires a clear understanding of the problems to be solved in the first place — especially when those problems involve real humans.

Human versus machine intelligence

There is an oft-cited bit from Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series in which an omniscient computer is asked for the ultimate answer to life and the universe. After 7.5 million years, it provides its answer: the number 42. The computer explains to the discombobulated beings who built it that the answer appears meaningless only because they never understood the question they wanted answered.

What is important is identifying the questions machine learning is well-tailored to answer, the questions it struggles with, and perhaps most importantly, how the paradigmatic shift in AI frameworks is impacting the relationship between humans, their data, and the world it describes. Using neural nets has allowed machines to become uncannily accurate at distinguishing idiosyncrasies in massive datasets — but at the cost of truly understanding what they know.

In his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid, Douglas Hofstadter explores the themes of intelligence. He contemplates the idea that intelligence is built upon tangled layers of “strange loops,” a Möbius strip of hierarchical, abstracted levels that paradoxically wind up where they started out. He believes that intelligence is an emergent property built on self-referential layers of logic and abstractions.

This is the wonder that neural nets have achieved — a multi-layered mesh of nodes and weights that pass information from one tier to the next in a digital reflection of the human brain. However, there is one important rule of thumb in artificial intelligence: The more difficult it is for a human to interpret and process something, the easier it is for a machine, and vice versa.

Calculating digits of π, encrypting messages using unimaginably huge prime numbers, and remembering a bottomless Tartarean abyss of information can occur within the blink of an eye using a computer, which manages to outperform millennia of human calculations. And yet humans can recognize their friend’s face in an embarrassing baby photo, identify painters based on brush strokes, and make sense of overly verbose and ruminating blog entries. These are domains that machine learning has made vast improvements in, but it is no wonder that as the human brain-inspired architecture of neural nets brings machines up to parity, and in some cases beyond, in areas of human cognition, machines are beginning to suffer some of the same problems humans do.

Nature or nurture?

By design, we are unable to know what neural nets have learned, and instead we often keep feeding the system more data until we like what we see. Worse yet, the knowledge it has “learned” is not discrete principles and theories, but rather contained in a vast network that is incomprehensible to humans. While Hofstadter might have contemplated artificial intelligence as a reflection of human intelligence, modern AI architects have no tendency to share the same preoccupation. Consequently, modern neural nets, while highly accurate, do not elucidate any understanding of the world for us. In fact, there are several well-publicized instances where AI went afoul, manifesting in a socially unacceptable reality. Within a day of Microsoft’s AI chatbot Tay being active, it learned from Twitter users how to craft misogynistic, racist, and transphobic tweets. Did Tay learn a conceptual sociohistorical theory of gender or race? I would argue not.

Why AI can’t be left unattended

Paradoxically, even if we assume that the purpose of an AI isn’t to understand human concepts at all, these concepts often materialize anyway. As another example of misguided AI, an algorithm was used to predict the likelihood of someone committing future crimes. Statistically based software models learned racial biases, assigning higher risks to black defendants with virtually no criminal records, if any, than to white defendants with extensive histories of violent crime. Facial recognition software is also known to have its biases, to the point that a Nikon camera was unable to determine if a Taiwanese-American woman had her eyes open or not. Machine learning is only as good as the data it is built upon, and when that data is subject to human biases, AI systems inherit these biases. Machines are effective at learning from data, but unlike humans, have little to no proficiency when it comes to taking into account all the things they don’t know, the things missing from the data. This is why even Facebook, which is able to devote massive AI resources to its efforts to eliminate terroristic posts, concedes that the cleanup process ultimately depends on human moderators. We should be rightfully anxious about firing up an AI, whose knowledge is unknowable to us, and leaving it to simmer unattended.

The AI community cannot be haphazard about throwing open the AI gates. Machine learning works best when the stakeholders’ problems and goals are clearly identified, allowing us to chart an appropriate course of action. Treating everything as a nail is likely to waste resources, erode users’ trust, and ultimately lead to ethical dilemmas in AI development.
