It was 1993 and the Sandra Schmirler rink was about to win its first Scotties championship. McCusker played second for the team, all while trying to be the best mother she could be.
She recalls having to leave the ice on a number of occasions during the fifth-end breaks to breastfeed her three-month old son, Rory.
The team captured its first championship in February 1993. They were all elated. But McCusker was devastated because she felt like she had abandoned her baby.
"I was so traumatized by that," she said. "I was going to quit because I wanted more kids and couldn't imagine leaving them again to curl."
McCusker's husband, as well as her team, pushed her to continue, reassuring her she wasn't the absent mother she thought she was. It got McCusker thinking about how many other competitive female curlers had young children at that time.
"I had to do my own research to know," McCusker said. "There were very few members of female Canadian [rinks] who had children and continued to play."
The Schmirler team captured back-to-back Scotties titles but lost their bid for a three-peat in 1995. It was after that season that the team got together and talked about planning their pregnancies before the first-ever Olympic trials, ahead of the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan where the sport would make its Games debut. They wanted children but they also wanted to curl.
"I feel that my team was groundbreaking in the fact that we wanted to have our cake and eat it too," McCusker said. "And at that point in time if you started your family it was expected you would quit competitive curling and take care of your kids."
Within the span of a few months in 1996 McCusker, second Marcia Gudereit and Jan Betker all had babies.
"Jan and I ended up being pregnant at the same time and had babies in May and July. Marcie had Colin in December," McCusker said.
Schmirler was undergoing procedures to get pregnant at the same time and in 1997 had her first child — the only problem was that it was just two months before the Olympic trials.
"Sandra famously gave birth by C-section in September of 1997 and we were in the Olympic trials eight weeks later," McCusker said.

Curlers Sandra Schmirler, left, Jan Betker, centre and Joan McCusker planned their pregnancies so they could successfully win gold at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan. (Chuck Stoody/Canadian Press)
They'd earn the right to represent Canada and go on to win the first Olympic gold medal in curling.
"I swear our recipe for success for winning the very first Olympic trials was our skip having an eight-week old baby and the rest of us having babies," McCusker said.
The team hoped to also represent Canada at the Olympics four years later in Salt Lake City. They mapped out what the next few years would look like. The first year was all about cashing in on their Olympic fame. The following year was all about having babies again.
"It was the family year and then the plan was to get back to the Olympics," McCusker said.
And they all delivered exactly on time.
Schmirler, McCusker, Betker and Gudereit all had their next round of babies within six months.
"We were training and laughing about our plans," McCusker said. "That's when Sandra started not feeling well. We thought it was pregnancy and it was cancer."
Schmirler would die of cancer in March 2000.
Just a couple of weeks ago one of the highest-profile skips in the game announced she will be having a baby —Rachel Homan's due date is June 14. The timing of it is seemingly perfectly planned around the curling season.

"It's hard to plan those things and obviously family is way more important than curling," Homan said. "When it comes down to it everyone on the team knows family comes first."
Homan's team is currently ranked No. 1 in the world and has won back-to-back Grand Slam events. She says she's feeling really good right now and has not felt any ill-effects from being pregnant.
The last event of the year is May in Beijing — the final stop on the Curling World Cup Tour. Homan's team will be playing by virtue of winning the first leg.
"Thankfully it works out that I won't miss much of the curling season. I'll try and play as long as I can and I'm feeling really good right now. We're excited for the future," Homan said.
"Beijing might be tough but we'll see how it goes. We have a full season in together."
Jennifer Jones had her first baby in 2012 at a time when there was a lot going on in her life. Not only was she becoming a first-time mother in the fall of 2012, but she had also undergone knee surgery. There was a lot to deal with and the Olympic trials in December of 2013 were fast approaching.
Undeterred, Jones was a woman on a mission, playing the role of super mom and super curler. She would guide her team to an Olympic trials win and Olympic gold a year later. Her second daughter, Skyla, was born in August 2016.
One of the winningest skips of all-time admits it can be challenging at times juggling being a full-time curler and mother, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
"Your kids make every part of your life better," Jones said. "The biggest thing for me is that I want my girls to be proud of me."

Jones said her mother has been the biggest blessing in playing the role of babysitter when she's at an event — her husband Brent Laing curls with Team Epping and is at many of the same events.
"It can be difficult," Jones admitted. "But our moms have been amazing. My mom is a superstar. She just had her 75th birthday."
Jones knows she's sacrificed some valuable time with her daughters while being on the ice, but hopes she can teach her daughters about going after goals
"I want to be a role model for them and to know they should always chase their dreams. Yes, mom is away a lot but she's chasing her dreams and I want them to do the same."

When Kenny Sun’s latest solo project, Yankai’s Peak, came out earlier this year, he never would have anticipated that the game would be selected to win the Best Sound award from the Intel Level Up Developer Contest for its crunchy sound effects and atmospheric music.
The announcement completely caught Sun off guard, as sound design is usually the last thing he adds to his games. And he didn’t think the audio in Yankai’s Peak was all that special.
“There’s one music track in Peak that my friends made, but the rest were just from freesound.org. … They just have a bunch of people who put up sound effects on the website,” he explained.
But it’s the way Sun altered those sounds (by tweaking their pitch) that makes them feel unique. They work well with Yankai’s Peak’s meditative gameplay, where you move around a series of pyramids in increasingly challenging levels. It’s sort of a spiritual successor to Sun’s previous puzzle game, Yankai’s Triangles, which also sports trippy visuals and a love for all things triangular. Shapes happen to be a common motif in his work.
“When I start thinking of designs for games, I usually constrain myself by using a specific shape. So my first game had squares, then there were circles, and then triangles. For Peak, I wanted to do something in 3D, and pyramids seemed like a cool thing to try out,” Sun said.
“I haven’t seen many games based on triangular grids. So I figured that’d be an interesting thing to explore. At the time, I’d been playing a lot of Stephen’s Sausage Roll, which is a cool puzzle game that uses pushing mechanics in interesting ways. And I thought maybe I could transfer that into this triangular kind of gameplay.”
Above: Yankai’s Peak has a simple but elegant aesthetic.
When Sun graduated from New York University a few years ago, he wasn’t sure if he’d become a game developer. At first, the computer science major moved to California for a lucrative programming gig at a big company.
But that turned out to be a mistake. The money wasn’t worth dealing with what he described as an incredibly “unfulfilling job.” It was the worst four months of his life.
Fortunately, things have become much better since then. Sun left California and moved to Boston, where he works as a programmer at Rock Band studio Harmonix.
While the young developer likes puzzle games, he didn’t intentionally set out to make so many of them. Sun views his projects as a fun hobby, something to do in his free time. He first caught the development itch when he was in middle school creating Flash-based games for the web. But then he stopped for a while. Sun returned to games during his junior year at NYU (where he also took a few game design courses) to make a mobile title.
Nowadays, it takes him about six months to a year to finish each project. He likes keeping his scope small — he doesn’t want to expand his team to more than two people — so he can finish them relatively quickly. Since it’s hard to gauge the difficulty of puzzle games on his own, he usually has developer friends help with playtesting so he can receive some feedback.
“I just make games because I want to make games,” said Sun. “There’s no specific genre I want to work with or message I want to tell.”
At Harmonix, Sun also gets to experience the other side of game development, where he’s part of a bigger crew that has more resources. And he gets a “nice break” from that on the weekends when he tinkers with his indie games (he’s already hard at work on the next one).
“I’m definitely learning a lot at Harmonix. It’s nice having people around,” said Sun. “I feel like the worst part of being a full-time solo developer would be the solitude.”
It’s the best of both worlds.

If President Trump’s recent, controversial pardon of Arizona ex-sheriff Joe Arpaio left you wondering, “Who is this guy?” — well, you’re in luck: Trevor Noah has the answer.
On Monday’s episode of The Daily Show, Noah dedicated a new Profiles in Tremendousness segment to Arpaio, who took a strong stance against illegal immigration during his time as sheriff of Maricopa County — and then abused his power in a number of ways.
“As much as Sheriff Arpaio presented himself as anti-illegal immigrant, it turned out that he was really just anti-being a decent human being,” Noah said, before cutting to a clip reel that detailed just how poorly the inmates were treated at prisons run by Arpaio.
Noting that Arpaio is “regarded by many as one of the worst sheriffs in America,” Noah explained the real reason that Arpaio needed a pardon from President Trump: his defiance of a 2011 court order, which barred his officers from pulling over and detaining Latino drivers, after Arpaio had been accused of racial profiling at traffic stops.
“All that s—t that Arpaio did? Those were just his extracurriculars. It turns out his full-time job is racism,” Noah said, later adding, “You know, for a guy who’s not racist, Donald Trump sure has a lot of racist friends.”

It appears the next-generation Wrangler will take another small step to modernization and civility. JL Wrangler Forums reports that the new Wrangler is showing up on dealer computers along with a variety of options. One of them is the inclusion of a full-time four-wheel-drive system called Selec-Trac. This means that it will be possible to simply leave the Wrangler in four-wheel drive all the time, without worrying about damaging it when pavement is dry, much like the all-wheel-drive systems on most modern crossovers.
This might concern Wrangler purists, but there are a couple of reasons not to fret. For one, although Jeep doesn’t have a Selec-Trac system on the market to compare to right now, the old Selec-Trac system offered on the Jeep Liberty had a low-range for off-roading, so this one probably will, too. For another, only one kind of Wrangler will offer this feature, according to JL Wrangler Forums. The Selec-Trac system will only be available on the four-door Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, the version that’s arguably the most luxurious, and the body-style with the longest wheelbase. All the others will only have the classic selectable four-wheel drive.
There is another interesting feature noted in the JL Wrangler Forums collection of information. Apparently the four-cylinder engine will have a combination starter and generator driven by a belt. This is interesting, because the only other car we’ve seen with such a component is the new Audi A8. In that application, the belt-driven starter and generator is used for smoother, faster starting and stopping to save fuel. We would guess the Jeep’s system works in a similar way, though likely without the support of a 48-volt electrical system. We will likely know more when the new Wrangler makes its debut, which is expected at the L.A. auto show this year.

As a serial side hustler turned New York Times bestselling author, Chris Guillebeau knows how to make a passion project lucrative.
“My whole life has been kind of a series of side hustles,” Guillebeau told Business Insider.
The 39-year-old worked as a freelancer, overseas aid worker, and founder of several small business — often all at the same time — before becoming an author around 2010.
In early January, the Portland-based author and blogger launched a podcast and traveling workshop called “Side Hustle School” to help others create and grow their side hustle.
While many people set out to start a side project in hopes of generating extra income, others see it as an opportunity to eventually ditch their day job. That’s OK, says Guillebeau, but you should always start your side hustle, well, on the side.
“I really, really encourage people to start their project from where they are … Then, if it reaches a certain point in revenue — maybe it doesn’t equal your day job income but it equals enough for you to live on and get by, even if it’s not ultimately where you want to be — then it’s kind of like you have your baseline,” he said. “The right time to leave [your day job] is when you have something that’s really working — it’s not early when you have great merit or great promise or potential to it.”
While Guillebeau says “there’s an urgency” to create an extra source of income in today’s economy, it’s up to you whether it makes sense to grow that project into something bigger.
“[Y]ou can make that decision of ‘OK do I want to go full time with this or am I happy with it at its current level — what do I want to do with my life?'” he said. “The point at which you answer that is when you have something that is approaching that level of sustainability.”
