How do you know you’re truly being welcomed into the Pearson family fold? You snag a coveted series-regular promotion!

TVLine can confirm that This Is Us has upped Griffin Dunne — who plays the adult version of Jack’s younger brother Nicky — to a full-fledged series regular for the NBC drama’s just-launched fourth season (read premiere recap). Dunne joined the show in Season 3 as a recurring guest star.

As noted by our sister site Deadline, which first broke the news of Dunne’s status change, the character’s growing importance was foreshadowed in the final moments of the Season 3 finale when Nicky was seen (via flash-forward) at ailing, elderly Rebecca’s bedside. Dunne appeared briefly in Tuesday’s Season 4 premiere when he crossed paths with fellow war vet Cassidy (played by Once Upon a Time‘s Jennifer Morrison).

The UK has already picked Russia as a boogey man in the incident.

Speaking in Brussels on Monday, Karin Kneissl said that she viewed the poisoning of former double-agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, England, as “abhorrent.” However, unlike its British counterparts, Austria wants to have the full picture before casting blame on someone specifically.

“Our position is: First there is the need to establish a full picture of events in joint cooperation with the Chemical agency [Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)] and all those involved” the foreign minister said.

Kneissl’s cautionary remarks come less than a week after a French government spokesperson said it was too early to discuss retaliatory measures against Russia, as its involvement in the case has yet to be established.

“We don’t do fantasy politics. Once the elements are proven, then the time will come for decisions to be made,” the spokesperson told a press conference shortly after British Prime Minister Theresa May announced she would be expelling 23 Russian diplomats over the poisoning.

The French government’s position on the matter quickly took a U-turn, however, with the Elysee Palace releasing a follow-up statement declaring Russia’s culpability in the attack. “France shares Britain’s assessment that there is no other plausible explanation and reiterates its solidarity with his ally,” the statement said.

On Monday, the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council released a statement hailing the UK’s “commitment” to work closely with the OPCW, and calling on Russia to “provide immediate, full and complete disclosure of its Novichok program” to the organization.

Novichok is a Soviet-era nerve agent allegedly used in the March 4 incident. The UK has so far failed to send a formal inquiry to Moscow about the case, although Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that London will soon provide the OPCW with samples of the nerve agent used in the case. Johnson had earlier accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of personally ordering the attack.

Moscow has countered that view. “The fact, that they [UK officials] categorically reject to file an official request and deliberately and arrogantly fan anti-Russian rhetoric in the public sphere bordering on hysteria, indicates that they clearly understand they have no formal pretext to go down a legal road,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

On Monday, Johnson doubled down on his inflammatory rhetoric, describing Russian denials of responsibility in the nerve agent attack as “increasingly absurd.”

Modders turn Nintendo Switch into a full-fledged Linux tablet https://briefnews.eu/modders-turn-nintendo-switch-into-a-full-fledged-linux-tablet/ https://briefnews.eu/modders-turn-nintendo-switch-into-a-full-fledged-linux-tablet/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 15:36:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/modders-turn-nintendo-switch-into-a-full-fledged-linux-tablet/

For all of its Nintendo customizations, the Switch is ultimately a tablet running a garden variety NVIDIA Tegra processor — and that means it can potentially handle the same software as other mobile devices. To prove that point, the fail0verflow team has shown a Switch running an honest-to-goodness Linux distribution. The touchscreen, networking and accelerated 3D graphics are all functioning, as evidenced by the modders tweeting from the Switch and running a benchmark. You’re not about to run Steam games on it (many Linux apps aren’t built for ARM-based chips), but you could theoretically use the Switch as a basic computer.

Fail0verflow hasn’t explained exactly how the necessary exploit works, but it may be easier than you think. The team previously noted that it’s taking advantage of a bug in the Switch’s bootrom (the fixed low-level code that runs the moment you turn the device on), which prevents Nintendo from patching it on current consoles. You don’t need a mod chip, either. The only way for Nintendo to thwart this is to release updated hardware, and that might not happen for a while.

There’s no word yet on whether or not the exploit and techniques involved will be made widely accessible. Don’t expect to try this at home, then, even if you’re willing to throw caution (and your warranty) to the wind. As it stands, this is more of a because-we-can hack than something many Switch owners would find practical. You’d probably get better value out of running homebrew games, and that’s a tougher challenge given that Nintendo can easily update its operating system to block unauthorized software.

Amazon has a master plan to turn Alexa into a full-fledged economy all on its own (AMZN, AAPL, GOOG, GOOGL) https://briefnews.eu/amazon-has-a-master-plan-to-turn-alexa-into-a-full-fledged-economy-all-on-its-own-amzn-aapl-goog-googl/ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-has-a-master-plan-to-turn-alexa-into-a-full-fledged-economy-all-on-its-own-amzn-aapl-goog-googl/#respond Sat, 06 Jan 2018 02:38:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazon-has-a-master-plan-to-turn-alexa-into-a-full-fledged-economy-all-on-its-own-amzn-aapl-goog-googl/ Amazon echo

  • There are 30,000 skills, or apps, now available for Alexa, the voice assistant at the heart of the Amazon Echo.
  • Those skills are a powerful tool for keeping Amazon customers loyal to Alexa, amid growing competition from Google and soon Apple.
  • Amazon is focusing on helping developers build sustainable businesses creating Alexa skills.
  • Via its Developer Rewards program, Amazon paid the top Alexa skills developer of 2017 $ 100,000.

Amazon has built an early lead in voice-based computing, thanks to Alexa, the smart assistant that’s built into its popular Echo smart speakers and other devices.

To help build and maintain that lead, Amazon is hoping to nurture a thriving community of developers creating skills, or apps, for Alexa. Its goal is to help Alexa skills developers create solid, sustainable businesses.

“What’s good for developers is ultimately good for consumers,” said Rob Pulciani, Amazon’s general manager of Alexa skills. “Every new skill makes Alexa a little smarter, a little more fun, a little more entertaining.”

We’re likely to hear a lot of announcements related to voice-based computing at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show. Amazon and Google, which offers a rival voice-based computing technology called Google Assistant that’s built into its Home smart speakers, are going to show off the latest developments for their respective systems. Meanwhile, numerous gadget-makers will likely announce that they’ve built one or both of the voice agents into their TVs, phones, thermostats, and other gadgets.

Right now, Alexa has a leg up on Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri, the voice technology that’s built into the iPhone and will be at the center of the company’s upcoming HomePod speaker. Amazon’s Echo smart speakers have far outsold rivals, most notably Google’s Home devices. And thus far, Amazon’s done a better job than Google or Apple of encouraging developers to create apps for its assistant.

Developers, which include Lyft and Capital One, have built about 30,000 Alexa skills. Each of those skills allows Alexa to do something different and, collectively, can be a powerful tool for Amazon to retain customers.

“Google Home is nowhere near [the number of skills], and the others, notably [Siri], aren’t anywhere in sight,” said Werner Goertz, an analyst at research firm Gartner. “The Amazon customer has a comprehensive set of use cases and value propositions that keeps the customer grounded in the Alexa ecosystem – no reason to switch!”

Alexa SkillsBII

The state of the Amazon Alexa business

The key challenge for Amazon in trying to encourage the growth of the Alexa developer community is helping developers make money off their skills.

Amazon started allowing programmers to create apps for Alexa in 2015, but it initially insisted they offer them to customers for free. That pleased Alexa users, but it discouraged developers from putting much serious effort into creating or building Alexa apps, since they couldn’t get paid for them.

But Amazon has been taking halting steps towards allowing programmers to build businesses creating Alexa skills. In the first half of last year, the company launched a program called Developer Rewards that paid developers of the most-popular Alexa skills for their time.

Pulciani said that initial effort was successful. Amazon paid last year’s top Alexa skill developer $ 100,000 and gave many others $ 10,000 or more. That was enough for some Alexa developers to help pay for college, he said.

“Our rewards are making a lot of developers very happy,” Pulciani said.

amazon echo dot kidYouTube/f0t0b0y

But not all developers were pleased with the rewards program, CNET recently reported. To some, the rewards payouts seemed random. Others complained that Amazon wasn’t clearly explaining how it was determining the amounts it was paying developers.

Amazon took another stab at helping skills developers make money last month, when it unveiled two potentially game-changing new features they’ll be able to build into their apps. Developers will soon be able to charge money for premium services and features from within their skills, and they’ll be able to accept payments for those services via the Amazon Pay service.

The two new payment features are currently being tested within a small portion of the top Alexa skills, including Sony’s popular “Jeopardy” game. But Amazon plans to open them up to all developers sooner rather than later, Pulciani said.

With tools like these, developers can “own the relationship with the customer,” he said, and can bring in predictable, recurring revenue.

Amazon plans to continue working on new ways for developers to “create a business on Alexa,” Pulciani said. But it also plans to maintain its Developer Rewards program, he said.

The state of the skills marketplace

Amazon’s endeavor to build a healthy marketplace for Alexa skills is akin to Apple’s effort to do the same for iPhone apps starting with the launch of its App Store in 2008. With the App Store, the iPhone became the center of a thriving economy. The skills marketplace could do the same for Alexa.

But Pulciani is cautious about the comparison, mainly because smartphone apps are very different from voice skills and the businesses built around them are likely to be distinct also. Very few Alexa skills have become widely popular — none of them have enjoyed anything close to the success of a phenomenon like “Candy Crush Saga.” Instead, Alexa users each install a different mix of Alexa skills, based on the restaurants they order from, the stores they like, and the music services they use.

Because of that, Pulciani sees a lot of potential for what he calls “hyperlocal” Alexa skills. For example, some ski resorts have begun experimenting with skills that allow Alexa users to find out how much snow is on the slopes. The skills have very narrow appeal, but among the local skiers, they’ve become a popular and quick way to find out ski conditions.

Discoverability of 3rd party alexa skillsBI Intelligence

Pulciani also sees a lot of potential for Alexa skills for kids as well as for the workplace.

But he thinks apps for the voice assistant need to offer more capabilities and do more to engage users. He himself as been surprised at what users are already doing with Alexa. He didn’t think the assistant would be ready for banking applications for a while yet, for example. But the success Capitol One has had on Alexa has shown that there’s room for skills that offer more than just basic features.

One major challenge Amazon faces is making it easier for users to find and discover skills. Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play store prominently showcase the newest and hottest apps. But you can’t exactly do that on a voice-based computing system. And it’s hard to search for and sift through new skills by just talking to your smart speaker. Right now, the way Amazon is handling to problem is by having Alexa recommend skills when you ask it to do something out of its ken.

Amazon also has work to do when it comes to helping developers build better apps. The company needs to figure out a way of sharing with developers what it’s learned about building Alexa skills in-house, Pulciani said. It’s a brave new world, and Amazon needs to work together with developers to figure it out, he said.

“We can’t be successful if developers aren’t successful,” Pulciani said.

Square’s full-fledged cash register will cost $999 https://briefnews.eu/squares-full-fledged-cash-register-will-cost-999/ https://briefnews.eu/squares-full-fledged-cash-register-will-cost-999/#respond Tue, 31 Oct 2017 07:54:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/squares-full-fledged-cash-register-will-cost-999/

Square’s existing point-of-sale systems were designed with smaller businesses in mind, those that would have no issues selling with the help of an iPad or a phone. But the setup might not always be ideal for bigger businesses, so Square has launched a full-fledged payment register. Square Register features the company’s point of sale software embedded in two pieces of hardware: one is an iMac-like seller display and the other is a detachable display where customers can see images of the items they want to buy. Customers can also swipe their cards or tap their phones on the detachable component to pay for their purchases.

Square (and Twitter) chief Jack Dorsey said its new product was custom-built for larger clients who feel that the Stand — its point-of-sale system that turns an iPad into a cash register — is too consumer-focused. Larger businesses have apparently been requesting a more professional system with a second screen where customers can see their orders.

Since this device caters specifically to larger customers, Square won’t be retiring any of its older products anytime soon. Dorsey said Register was never meant to replace them, only to serve as an option for those who need it. “We can’t be a service that says, ‘Oh, you’re too big for us,'” he explained.

The full-fledged point-of-sale system will set businesses back $ 999 or $ 49 per month for two years. While that’s over thrice the price of a Stand, it already comes with everything it needs to work and doesn’t need a separate iPad or phone anymore.

Empire Promotes Rumer Willis to Full-Fledged Series Regular in Season 4 https://briefnews.eu/empire-promotes-rumer-willis-to-full-fledged-series-regular-in-season-4/ https://briefnews.eu/empire-promotes-rumer-willis-to-full-fledged-series-regular-in-season-4/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 14:05:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/empire-promotes-rumer-willis-to-full-fledged-series-regular-in-season-4/

Rumor had it we’d be seeing a lot more of Tory Ash this season on Empire, and now we know why: Rumer Willis is an official full-timer.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the Fox hit — which kicks off its fourth season on Wednesday (8/7c) — has upped the actress-singer to a series regular. Willis joined Empire as the sneaky chanteuse in Season 3, appearing in a total of four episodes. We’re told Tory’s attempt to make a crossover comeback and her unwillingness to shy away from controversy will continue to have ripple effects in Season 4.

Even before her promotion kicked in, Willis was likely feeling at home on the Empire set; her mom Demi Moore is in the midst of her own major arc on the show.

Willis’ pre-Empire TV resume includes guest stints on Pretty Little Liars, Hawaii Five-0 and 90210 (new flavor).

‘Alias Grace’ Trailer: Netflix Turns Their Margaret Atwood Adaptation Into a Full-Fledged Thriller https://briefnews.eu/alias-grace-trailer-netflix-turns-their-margaret-atwood-adaptation-into-a-full-fledged-thriller/ https://briefnews.eu/alias-grace-trailer-netflix-turns-their-margaret-atwood-adaptation-into-a-full-fledged-thriller/#respond Sun, 10 Sep 2017 07:09:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alias-grace-trailer-netflix-turns-their-margaret-atwood-adaptation-into-a-full-fledged-thriller/ alias grace trailer

It’s high time that more of Margaret Atwood‘s excellent works are adapted to the small and big screen. With Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale drawing rave reviews for its harrowing and timely depiction of a not-to0-distant dystopia, Netflix is diving into Atwood’s catalog for its own prestigious miniseries.

Alias Grace is a miniseries adaptation of Atwood’s Gothic historical fiction about a real-life murder in 1843 Canada. Grace Marks, the titular maid convicted of murdering her master and his housekeeper, is the fascinating character and unreliable narrator at the center of the story — painted as both a victim and culprit. But while the novel acts as a psychological mystery, the Alias Grace trailer paints the story as more of a straight-up thriller, which doesn’t bode well for this highly anticipated adaptation.

Sarah Gadon seems impressively duplicitous as Grace Marks in the Alias Grace trailer, narrating the clip with an eerie foreboding that gives the impression that she is more guilty than innocent.

“It’s strange to reflect that of all the people living in that house, I was the only one left alive in six months time,” Grace recounts as we see flashes of her working in an unhappy household, verbally abused and scolded by her master (Paul Gross) and his mistress and housekeeper (Anna Paquin) until an axe is cryptically bloodied. Edward Holcroft plays the doctor who interviews and analyzes Grace as she recounts the entire horrifying story. The entire trailer plays off as quite scintillating, and makes the Alias Grace adaptation seem like a horror-thriller rather than the Gothic mood-piece that the novel was.

I was enraptured by the book, and curious to see how it would be adapted to the screen. Hulu has done (mostly) right by The Handmaid’s Tale and Netflix has proven to be quite adept at prestige series. However, it seems that Netflix, producer Sarah Polley, and director Mary Harron, have taken a by-the-numbers approach to a dense tale. I hope I’m proven wrong once the miniseries is actually released on Netflix, and this is just a case of poor marketing on Netflix’s part.

Here is Netflix’s synopsis for Alias Grace:

Alias Grace is based on Margaret Atwood’s award-winning novel. The six-hour miniseries follows Grace Marks, a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, in 1843.

Alias Grace will premiere all six of its episodes on Netflix on November 3.

‘X-Men’ Spinoff ‘New Mutants’ Will Be a ‘Full-Fledged Horror Movie’ https://briefnews.eu/x-men-spinoff-new-mutants-will-be-a-full-fledged-horror-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/x-men-spinoff-new-mutants-will-be-a-full-fledged-horror-movie/#respond Fri, 26 May 2017 10:46:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/x-men-spinoff-new-mutants-will-be-a-full-fledged-horror-movie/ new mutants horror movie

Every time a comic book movie director claims that his movie will be “very different” from other superhero movies, an angel loses its wings and gains heat vision.

But New Mutants director Josh Boone swears that his X-Men spin-off will forego all those costumes and supervillains, and go “full-fledged horror movie” instead — because horror is the new trend now. To be fair, the source material for New Mutants, the 1984 Marvel Comics storyline “The Demon Bear Saga,” lends itself to the horror genre, and we are already greatly anticipating the spinoff film anyway with the casting of Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams and Split‘s Anya Taylor-Joy. But Boone wants you to know that New Mutants isn’t like other X-Men films.

The X-Men universe, despite being home to one of the most incomprehensible superhero movie timelines, boasts some of the most creative and groundbreaking films and TV shows in the comic book movie genre. The eye-popping FX series Legion and James Mangold‘s masterful genre-transcending Logan are prime examples of this.

But perhaps New Mutants director Josh Boone is referring to the classic X-Men movies by Bryan Singer, which brought on the modern era of superhero movies and notoriously refused to let their heroes wear their iconic bright yellow costumes — dressing them instead in black leather suits.

Boone told Entertainment Weekly that his film will be different because it apparently forgoes all these things — including the traditional trappings of the superhero movie itself. Because New Mutants is not a superhero movie, but a horror film:

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

Boone will be taking inspiration from Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz’s early ’80s run on the New Mutants, in which the teenage students of Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters found themselves isolated from the world by a freak snowstorm and forced to overcome their own differences to save themselves from a demonic bear. The storyline delighted Boone as a child, who called it “a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes.”

Boone wouldn’t divulge any plot details, but a source told Entertainment Weekly that the movie will follow the mutants when their powers are new:

“Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.”

Williams and Taylor-Joy have been confirmed to play Wolfsbane and Magik, respectively, and Rosario Dawson and 13 Reasons Why actor Henry Saga have been rumored to be circling parts in the movie.

Okay, I’m fine with New Mutants being a horror movie. In fact, I think it’s a fantastic angle to take, and that the superhero genre is so malleable that it can present a new take on any genre: Logan did so with the western, Captain America: Civil War with the spy thriller, Ant-Man with the heist film.

New Mutants is expected to begin production in July and is scheduled to hit theaters April 13, 2018.
