Hyundai

LOS ANGELES.—A recent trip to the West Coast afforded an opportunity to drive something rather interesting: the Hyundai Nexo, the company’s new hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle. Even now I’m struggling to get my head around this obviously clever machine. Completely ignoring the elephant (element?) in the room and the fact that Hyundai still hasn’t decided how much it will cost, the FCEV is very well-executed, a fine alternative power vehicle from a company that has been building some pretty good cars of late. But at some point you have to come back to the fact that it is hydrogen-fueled, bringing all the baggage that entails into play. Hence the continuing head-scratching.

Hyundai and hydrogen actually go back two decades—the Nexo is its second-generation mass-produced hydrogen vehicle and a follow-up to the Tucson FCEV launched in 2013. But the Tucson was designed to use an internal combustion engine, and shoehorning a fuel cell stack, batteries, and pressurized storage tanks into it involved compromises. The Nexo has been designed from the ground up as an FCEV with better efficiency and more range. Well, Hyundai wants it to serve as the company’s new eco/tech flagship. And on those counts, it has delivered.

Workhorse Group, the electric vehicle startup working on everything from a plug-in hybrid pickup truck to a prototype replacement delivery truck for the U.S. Postal Service, has teamed with a New York-based company to deliver its first zero-emissions hydrogenfuel cell delivery van to FedEx.

Workhorse built the class 5 E-GEN delivery van, which is charged by a ProGen hydrogen engine made by Latham, N.Y.-based fuel cell manufacturer Plug Power. The van is already in service at the FedEx facility in Menands, N.Y., near Albany, on a standard delivery route and has been run in weather including rain and snow. It refuels using Plug Power’s hydrogen fueling station in nearby Latham, reportedly one of the first of its kind on the entire East Coast, and boasts a driving range of more than 160 miles per delivery cycle, which Plug Power says is a 166 percent increase over standard battery-electric power alone.

Plug Power offers few details about ProGen except to say it’s a suite of modular fuel-cell engines are “flexible power building blocks” designed for electric vehicle platforms. The new FCEV has accumulated more than 3,000 on-road miles in testing and is expected to accumulate more than 27,000 miles of driving in the first six months. It’s designed to save fleet operators money on fuel and other operational costs, reducing the total costs of ownership over time.

In a release, Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh said the collaboration with Workhorse and FedEx “is the beginning of a hydrogen transformation in the delivery van industry. Opportunities to provide on-road customers with business-improving power solutions, as we have in our collaboration with FedEx, builds on our significant experience transforming the way our clients in the material handling industry do business.” The companies were also assisted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fuel Cell Technologies Office through their support of early stage research and development work.

Commercial vehicles seem to be a newer focus for Plug Power, which has focused mostly on forklifts and mobile power solutions to date.

We most recently heard from Workhorse, meanwhile, when it launched the N-Gen, an electric delivery van with an optional range extender and delivery drone. It’s also working with UPS to develop an all-new electric delivery van with a 100-mile driving range.

Prior to that, it opened up reservations for its new W-15 plug-in hybrid pickup truck, which will have an expected starting price of $ 52,500 and be eligible for a $ 7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles. That truck, which has an 80-mile electric driving range, is expected to start deliveries to fleet operators late in 2018 and to regular customers in 2019.

Hyundai employed a rather unconventional approach for the rollout of its fuel-cell SUV that will replace the current hydrogen-powered Tucson. The automaker first pulled the curtain off the new vehicle in mid-2017 without revealing full details. Now, during the tech circus known as CES (formerly called the Consumer Electronics Show), the Korean brand has spilled the specifics on the Nexo, which is what the new SUV will be called. Hyundai plans Level 4 autonomy by 2021 in a fuel-cell car https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-level-4-autonomy-by-2021-in-a-fuel-cell-car/ https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-level-4-autonomy-by-2021-in-a-fuel-cell-car/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2018 15:30:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-level-4-autonomy-by-2021-in-a-fuel-cell-car/

SAN FRANCISCO — Silicon Valley startup Aurora announced on Thursday partnerships with Volkswagen AG and Hyundai to develop a self-driving system within their vehicles, the latest tie-up between global automakers and Silicon Valley tech companies.

Aurora was founded in 2016 by robotics expert Drew Bagnell, Chris Urmson, who came from Alphabet Inc’s Google, and Sterling Anderson, who formerly worked at Tesla.

For Hyundai, Aurora’s technology will be incorporated into custom-developed models and tested in markets including China. Hyundai said the first model to be used in testing will be its latest generation fuel-cell vehicle, debuting at the CES technology conference in Las Vegas next week. The model name of the car, shown above, will be announced then.

Under the alliance, Hyundai plans to commercialize level 4 autonomous vehicles — which can operate without human input or even human oversight under select conditions — in unidentified “pilot smart cities” by 2021.

This is the first announcement on a self-driving technology partnership by the South Korean carmaker, which has traditionally shunned tie-ups in favor of developing technology in-house. The strategy has raised investor concerns that it may be left behind in the race for self-driving and electric cars.

A company spokeswoman said Hyundai has “various collaborations” under way in self-driving technology and would continue to pursue cooperation.

In a statement, Volkswagen said Aurora’s self-driving technology can be integrated over time across the automaker’s brands and in different product categories, whether self-driving pods, shuttles, delivery vans or self-driving trucks.

Aurora and Volkswagen said they had been working together over the past six months to integrate Aurora’s sensors, hardware and software into the German carmakers’ electric vehicles to develop self-driving ride services in cities.

The non-exclusive partnerships mark the first deals for the young Silicon Valley company and show how some carmakers have chosen to partner with technology companies with more experience in artificial intelligence, deep learning and robotics in order to save time and money bringing self-driving cars to market.

Within the self-driving car space, Waymo — formerly Google’s autonomous program headed by Urmson — is offering something similar. The tech company has been working with Fiat Chrysler since 2016 to outfit its Chrysler Pacifica minivans with autonomous technology. Waymo plans to launch a fully autonomous ride-hailing service early next year in Phoenix, Arizona.

Urmson said that while each carmaker partnership requires close collaboration to integrate the self-driving system, the technology is “quite transferrable” between vehicle models and manufacturers.

Hyundai hydrogen fuel-cell SUV spied nearly naked https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-hydrogen-fuel-cell-suv-spied-nearly-naked/ https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-hydrogen-fuel-cell-suv-spied-nearly-naked/#respond Wed, 22 Nov 2017 13:59:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hyundai-hydrogen-fuel-cell-suv-spied-nearly-naked/

Back in August, Hyundai showed what seemed to be an extremely thinly veiled concept version of a hydrogen-powered crossover SUV at a special event in Seoul. Besides its showy gold paint and two-toned interior, it definitely looked like something that could roll down the production line with minimal effort.

Well, judging by these spy photos, that looks like it’ll be the case. Hyundai didn’t even really bother to camouflage these test mules. The intricate taillight clusters carry over from the concept, as do the distinctive grille and Tesla-like extending door handles. Heck, even the wheels look to be exactly the same. And if we were to make a guess based on its proportions and size, this shares a lot with the Kia Nero.

Featuring Hyundai’s fourth-generation hydrogen fuel-cell technology, the FCEV (or whatever the compact crossover will eventually be called) features a 20 percent power increase over its Tucson hydrogen FCEV predecessor and is more capable in cold weather. The new FCEV will also have greater hydrogen capacity, featuring three tanks instead of two.

(If you want to learn a little more about how hydrogen fuel cell vehicles work, our Honda Clarity first drive is a decent place to start.)

The spy photographers didn’t get a glimpse inside, but the “concept” back in August showcased a pretty production-looking cabin. If the exterior’s any indication, it should look exactly like that.

We’ve included pictures of that “concept” at the end of the gallery above so you can easily compare the “transformation.”

Expect the final product to be unveiled at CES in January.

The luxury sedan of the future will be hydrogen powered and look something like a fish—at least according to Toyota. The company’s latest concept car for the Tokyo auto show is called the Fine-Comfort Ride and is meant to preview a premium sedan that is at once environmentally friendly and spacious, with plush seating for six. Toyota also claims that the car’s packaging, being purpose built to accommodate hydrogen fuel cells, allows for a driving range of more than 600 miles.

–

The Fine-Comfort Ride’s bizarre, futuristic design is dictated by its long, 135.8-inch wheelbase and unconventionally shaped body, which is meant to maximize aerodynamics and interior space. The four wheels are pushed out to the corners and incorporate in-wheel electric motors, while an underbelly cover helps isolate the cabin acoustically. Toyota isn’t providing any other details about the powertrain at this point, other than a claim that the hydrogen fuel cells can be refueled in around three minutes.

–

The Fine-Comfort Ride’s interior is typical concept-car fare, with fanciful materials and an impossibly open and airy atmosphere. Four individual seats appear to be able to swivel and adjust every which way, while a third-row bench seat expands seating capacity to six. All sorts of touch displays look appropriately spaceship-like, as does the unconventional-looking steering wheel that’s more like a joystick.

–

–

Rather than being any sort of near-production vehicle, the Fine-Comfort Ride instead seems like a way for Toyota to set goals for the future. This concept’s driving range of 620 miles would be a big step forward compared with Toyota’s current production fuel-cell vehicle, the Mirai, which has an estimated range of 312 miles on a single tank of hydrogen. We’ll see how quickly Toyota can make progress toward these ambitions as it continues exploring various alternative-fuel technologies.
