NASA had to test adding super-cooled fuel to the Space Launch System's tanks to confirm the repairs it made after it scrubbed the mission's second launch attempt in late August. The ground team at Kennedy Space Center spotted a persistent hydrogen leak affecting one of the fuel lines on the SLS at the time and tried to fix it the day of three times. In the end, the team was unsuccessful and decided to postpone the mission.

The team determined a few days later that the leak was triggered when the SLS rocket's core booster tank went through a brief overpressurization. To prevent the same incident from happening, the team adjusted procedures for filling the rocket's tank with propellants, and it involves transitioning temperatures and pressures more slowly to prevent rapid changes that could cause leakage. The team's engineers also replaced the rocket's liquid hydrogen seals after discovering a small indentation in one of them that may have contributed to the leak.

While the engineers encountered another hydrogen leak during the fuel test, their troubleshooting efforts worked this time around and got the leak to "within allowable rates." That allowed them to conduct the pre-pressurization test, which brought up the liquid hydrogen tank's pressure level to match what it would experience just before an actual launch.

Artemis 1 launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson said the test went "really well" and that the team was able to accomplish all the objectives it set out to do. NASA will now evaluate data from the test before deciding if it can schedule another launch for the mission on its target date of September 27th.

UN chief asks wealthy nations to impose windfall taxes on fossil fuel industry

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres had just returned from a visit to flooded Pakistan when he stepped before the UN General Assembly to give a speech on Tuesday. Poverty-stricken regions experiencing the most severe climate change impacts like Pakistan were front-of-mind when he declared, “Today, I am calling on all developed economies to tax the windfall profits of fossil fuel companies.”

Guterres made it clear how taxing fossil fuel companies could help struggling countries recover, recommending that developed economies convert rocketing oil and gas industry profits into funds to help struggling nations recover. By redirecting funds “to countries suffering loss and damage caused by the climate crisis and to people struggling with rising food and energy prices,” he suggests “polluters must pay” for the damage that reports have shown fossil fuel companies are largely responsible for.

The Guardian called Guterres’ appeal his “most urgent, and bleakest, speech to date.” However, Guterres did suggest that “by acting as one, we can nurture fragile shoots of hope” and overcome “loss and damage from disasters” and reverse a “once-in-a-generation global cost-of-living crisis” that he said is “unfolding” and “turbocharged by the war in Ukraine.”

  • Asian utility companies are stocking up on dirtier fuel oil amid natural gas shortages.
  • That's due to a slash in Russian gas supplies, leading Europe and Asia to compete for the alternatives left on the market.
  • In August, Japan's fuel-oil purchases soared to a four-year high while Taiwan and Bangladesh doubled their purchases from last year.

Asian utility companies are stockpiling fuel oil as the shortage in natural gas supplies boosts demand for dirtier energy alternatives.

Countries in the region typically see seasonal increases in fuel-oil demand to supplement energy supplies. But in August, Japan's purchases soared to a four-year high while Taiwan and Bangladesh doubled their purchases from last year, Bloomberg reported, citing data from Vortexa.

That's largely been fueled by a slash in Russian gas supplies, leading European and Asian utility companies to compete for the alternatives on the market.

Although natural gas is largely used to generate electricity, fuel oil is used as an alternative. But it's highly pollutive – a sign that countries are setting aside green-energy initiatives to ensure there is enough energy inventory ahead of the winter heating season.

Meantime, other dirty energy sources like coal are also seeing increased demand, according to the International Energy Agency.

But while rich North Asian countries are stocking up on fuel oil, most countries in South Asia have already been pushed out of the natural gas market due to the soaring cost of supplies, and some are already experiencing supply disruptions.

India and Pakistan have been hit with blackouts, with Sri Lanka facing the most severe supply shortage, analysts from S&P Global said.

NASA replaces Artemis 1’s leaky fuel seals https://briefnews.eu/nasa-replaces-artemis-1s-leaky-fuel-seals/ https://briefnews.eu/nasa-replaces-artemis-1s-leaky-fuel-seals/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 07:24:42 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nasa-replaces-artemis-1s-leaky-fuel-seals/ NASA has completed a critical repair of its next-generation Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. On Friday, engineers replaced the leaky seal that forced the agency to scrub its most recent attempt to launch Artemis 1. On September 3rd, a fitting on one of the fuel lines to the SLS began leaking hydrogen. Ground crew at Kennedy Space Center tried to troubleshoot the problem three times, only for the leak to persist and force NASA to call off the launch attempt. On Friday, engineers also replaced the seal on a 4-inch hydrogen “bleed line” that was responsible for a smaller leak during an earlier August 29th launch attempt.

With the new gaskets in place, NASA plans to conduct a fueling test to verify they’re working as intended. The dry run will see engineers attempt to load the SLS with all 736,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and oxygen it would need during a regular flight. NASA hopes to successfully complete that test as early as September 17th. “This demonstration will allow engineers to check the new seals under cryogenic, or supercold, conditions as expected on launch day and before proceeding to the next launch attempt,” the agency said.

On Thursday, NASA announced it was targeting September 23rd for another go at putting Artemis 1 into space, with September 27th as a backup. Whether it can make those dates will depend on next week’s fueling test and a decision from the US Space Force. Flight regulations require that NASA test the battery of Artemis 1’s flight termination system every 20 days. That’s something it can only do within the Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building. The Space Force previously granted the agency an extension on the 20-day deadline. NASA has now asked for another waiver.

NASA scrubs the launch of its Space Launch System rocket due to fuel leak https://briefnews.eu/nasa-scrubs-the-launch-of-its-space-launch-system-rocket-due-to-fuel-leak/ https://briefnews.eu/nasa-scrubs-the-launch-of-its-space-launch-system-rocket-due-to-fuel-leak/#respond Sun, 04 Sep 2022 03:10:36 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nasa-scrubs-the-launch-of-its-space-launch-system-rocket-due-to-fuel-leak/ NASA has called off today’s planned launch of its new Space Launch System rocket. The launch was to be the start of the Artemis I mission, in which the rocket would carry the uncrewed Orion spacecraft on its mission around the moon. But a liquid hydrogen fuel leak meant the launch had to be scrubbed.

The leak was first observed this morning, Saturday, September 3, when the rocket’s tanks were being filled with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen which act as fuel for the launch. There was a leak in the liquid hydrogen line which connected to the rocket’s core stage, requiring the tanking to be halted.

“The launch director waived off today’s Artemis I launch attempt at approximately 11:17 a.m. EDT,” NASA wrote in an update. “Teams encountered a liquid hydrogen leak while loading the propellant into the core stage of the Space Launch System rocket. Multiple troubleshooting efforts to address the area of the leak by reseating a seal in the quick disconnect where liquid hydrogen is fed into the rocket did not fix the issue. Engineers are continuing to gather additional data.”

Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson declared the launch a “no-go” at just after 11 a.m. ET (8 a.m. PT) this morning. The teams had tried several options to stop the leak, including warming up the quick disconnect in the hope it would reseal, to using helium to add pressure to the line to try to reseal it. But none of the attempts fully stopped the leak, so the launch was called off when the liquid oxygen tank was 100% full and the liquid hydrogen tank was 11% full.

Now, the tanks will have to be drained of propellants before another launch attempt can be made. If the leak issue can be fixed in time, there is another launch opportunity for the rocket on Monday, September 5.

But could this near-death experience accelerate the couple’s relationship plans?

“I don’t know if Mel is ready for that,” said Breckenridge.

“Here’s the thing, the seasons take place in such a short period of time right? Each season is only around a month, a month in a half or so. So really, by season three, you will only be a couple of months into their relationship,” added the actress.

Henderson agreed, saying: “Jack’s not really the marrying type, is he? He’s managed to avoid that set of circumstances. He’s kept Charmaine at arm’s length for two years and this is unsure territory for him.”

Virgin River season 2 is available to stream on Netflix.

RELATED STORIES

Well, that’s just plane crazy.

Manifest brought Season 2 in for a landing on Monday night, and judging by the very final scene alone, the 828ers will face some big, wet questions in the event that NBC renews the supernatural-tinged family drama.

When last we tuned in, Cal had been kidnapped by Jace, Pete and Kory, the meth dealers who had escaped their prison transport and quickly sought revenge against arresting officer Michaela. Short of killing Cal, they offered to trade the lad for their confiscated meth stash — which Mick managed to remove the evidence locker, with help from Jared.

The first meet-up to make the trade was foiled by a New Yorker who really takes the “See Something, Say Something” placards to heart. But thanks to Zeke’s latest calling plus a clue texted over by Cal, Team Stone was able to ascertain where the baddies were holed up. Arriving at the location in the woods, Mick and Jared marched off toward the remote cabin, leaving an ailing Zeke in the car. Inside the cabin, Pete showed a soft spot for Cal, and ultimately freed the kid to sneak out the back door, infuriating Jace. A chase followed, out onto a frozen lake outside. There, the meth dealers and Cal came face to face with Michaela. But before a trade could be made, a lightning bolt zagged down from the sky, triggering a crack in the ice that snaked toward the meth dealers, eventually weakening the ice below them and Cal until all four plunged into the frigid drink!

Just then, Zeke arrived on the scene, and despite being 95-percent Popsicle at this stage, he dove into the hole to save Cal. After Zeke found and lifted Cal out, Jace got a hand on Zeke’s ankle, pulling him down. Zeke managed to shake loose and get himself pulled to safety by Ben… only to finally perish immediately after, in Mick’s arms. Death Date would take a holiday, however, as Zeke briefly glowed and then thawed out, healthy as ever!

Meanwhile in the city, Saanvi aimed to coerce the Major into revealing what cure, if any, she has come up with that might save Zeke, by infecting her with anaphylaxis and dangling a vial of life-saving adrenaline before her. But in the struggle that followed, the vial got swatted away, shattering on the ground. Poor Saanvi was left to watch the Major die, but not before she learned that her adversary aimed not to cure but weaponize the 828ers’ anomaly.

As the finale drew to a close the morning after, Jared at the frozen lake was told by divers that no bodies — none — were found beneath the ice. Meanwhile, Ben’s new calling, about an exploding Flight 828, took on a wild new meaning, when a fishing boat off Cuba dredged from the sea a tail fin… from Montego Airlines’ Flight 828!

You’ve got questions, and TVLine sought out answers, from Manifest showrunner Jeff Rake.

TVLINE | I guess it was probably almost exactly two years ago that you were shooting your pilot. How long have you been wanting to dredge that tail fin out of the water?
For a long time. [Laughs] It’s something we’ve been very excited about, and I’m so impressed with how that sequence came out. I co-wrote that scene with my colleague Matt Lau, and it was an easy enough scene to write, but it was incredibly challenging to film, so kudos to director Romeo Tirone and our entire crew. It was literally the last scene we shot of Season 3, and as beautiful as it looks, I’m sorry to report that cast and crew were not out on the beautiful waters that it appears to be. We were out on the freezing water somewhere just south of Coney Island.

TVLINE | One of the things I’m wondering — as I imagine we are supposed to be — is how could the plane have physically been in two places at once?
That’s exactly right, because if materials testing proves that that is, in fact, the “identical” tail fin, it’s a metaphysical impossibility. We saw that plane land in New York. We saw that plane blow up on the tarmac at the end of the pilot. So how can a plane have landed and been exploded and then also be found at the bottom of the ocean? Once the entire world finds out about this tail fin, that’s going to re-trigger the global scrutiny and paranoia about Flight 828 and its passengers. More pointedly, it’s going to lead people — and not just hatemongers like the Xers, but even rational minds — to conclude, in light of this evidence—

TVLINE | That the passengers are “fake.”
Does this mean that the passengers are not the passengers? And if they’re not the passengers, who are they? That’s going to be a season-long, science-based, science meets mythology investigation. For those who have been feeling that the episodes have become a little science-light or investigation-light, they have a lot of good material coming down the pike.

Manifest Season 2 FinaleTVLINE | Do you want to confirm if The Major is truly and sincerely dead? I think there’s more storytelling weight to it if she is, in fact, dead, because then Saanvi really has something to process.
That’s right. That’s right. The Major is, in fact, dead, and that has opened a horrific can of worms for Saanvi. She obviously went [to the park] with the awareness that that worst-case scenario could happen, and at the same time I think it’s quite clear in that very compelling scene — incredibly acted by Parveen [Kaur] and Elizabeth Marvel — that it certainly was not Saanvi’s intention.

TVLINE | My heart broke when that vial shattered.
Oh my goodness. It’s heartbreaking. Saanvi is somebody who is incredibly smart and capable and confident, so what that is going to do for her in Season 3 is plant for her what I would say is a two-pronged story arc. On the one hand, there’s the real-world stakes of she has committed a homicide — whether it’s manslaughter is for the lawyers to decide. But she has taken a life, and no one knows except for Vance.

I don’t want to spell out the details of who finds out about this first, how this becomes an investigation, but suffice it to say, this is going to become quite serious, and it begs all sorts of questions. Is Vance willing to try to cover this up for Saanvi? Is he able to? Are any of the investigators, any of the cops that we know and love, going to be roped into this? Without revealing any of those details, I will say that there will be a cat-and-mouse investigation that plays out as sort a Javert/Jean Valjean scenario — or as others might say, Kevin Costner in No Way Out, where somebody’s trying to figure out who a killer is, and a picture is slowly printing out of the printer. Metaphorically speaking.

Manifest Season 2 FinaleTVLINE | Josh Dallas indicated to me that, in the event of a Season 3 pick-up, the three shadow guys would still loom large.
I would say that our audience could fairly deduce from the end of the Season 2 finale that it’s not the last that we’ve seen of these meth guys. In the writers’ room, we fondly refer to them as The Meth Heads, and should they return, the audience can anticipate a dynamic parallel to that of Griffin, who at the end of Season 1 led us to discover that it’s not just the passengers who are experiencing this. We learned that with Zeke, and we learned that with Griffin, and so these three guys may, in fact, be the next individuals who are experiencing the notion of “death and return,” and that is going to set up its own incredibly high stakes. Again, a two-pronged journey — both the real-world one, because there’s unfinished business between those guys and the Stone family, but also on the mythological side of the equation.

What does it bear should we see them die and return, as we have seen with Zeke, as we have seen with Griffin? What does that mean for the greater mythological journey for our passengers? We’re going to learn the answer to that in the middle of Season 3, and that’s going to reshape our mythology for the rest of the series. That’s going to be probably the most significant mythological card turn in all of the series.

Manifest Season 2 FinaleTVLINE | Speaking of Zeke, is it safe to say that the ultimate cure for him was “the friends we made along the way”?
Yeah, it’s a beautiful thing. [Laughs] Ben deduces, sitting there in the garage with Michaela at the end of the finale, that Zeke followed the callings and survived the Death Date. Ben’s going to go into Season 3 with that takeaway because it’s really great news, it’s optimistic news, and it’s news that he urgently wants to share with every last passenger, because, let’s remember, there are 150-plus passengers who have yet to cross our television screen. By the time we get to the middle of Season 3, for reasons that have to do with these meth guys, Ben is going to learn, to his chagrin, that [getting the word out] is complicated. It’s more complicated than he thought.

TVLINE | Why aren’t all the passengers on a big group text by now?
I might be answering a question that you didn’t have on your page, but I’m going to answer it anyway. One thing we’re going to come to discover in Season 3, as we get to know more and more passengers, is that not every last passenger has that same kind of benevolent, selfless makeup of the Stone family and Saanvi. There’s a whole mixed bag out there.

As I like to say to the writers’ room and to my producer and executive friends in L.A., if you had pretty good reason to believe that you may only have four short years to live, what would you do with those years? A lot of people would be checking off their bucket list. A lot of people would be trying to be heroes, to be benevolent, to be Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. But not everybody, right? What about the nihilists? What about the vengeance seekers? What about the ruthless? What about the greedy? We haven’t even scratched the surface of that segment of the passenger population, and that’s going to take us into a whole new phase of Manifest.

TVLINE | I guess that answers my next question, which was whether we will meet any new characters in Season 3.
We absolutely will. And we’re going to meet one in particular who is going to become one of the more important characters in our series. I imagine us looking back in later seasons and trying to remember when that character entered, because they’ll have become so integral to our storytelling.

Manifest Recap Shadow FiguresTVLINE | Lastly, what do you want to say about what the Michaela/Zeke/Jared dynamic will look like moving forward? You could argue that Jared was only stepping aside because it was the right thing to do at the time, and he privately figured that this marriage had an expiration date. But Zeke is now healthy and may even brush his hair now.
[Laughs] That’s awesome. Hundred percent to all of that. Michaela did an excellent job of compartmentalizing her feelings for Jared, but the question is how long can those feelings stay compartmentalized as the triangle evolves. The ultimate question there is: Can Michaela carve out a place for both of these men in her life? And that’s what we’re going to see going forward.

Late last week, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) sent a probe into the damaged second reactor at the Fukushima nuclear plant. The probe’s mission was to explore the solidity of the nuclear fuel that melted back in 2011, when a tsunami hit the nuclear plant following an earthquake, causing a meltdown of the plant’s three reactors.

Eight years later, TEPCO is making slow but steady progress towards decommissioning the three damaged reactors. The mission to touch the melted nuclear fuel with a remote-controlled probe aimed to find out how solid the melted fuel is, and whether it could be transported away from the site. This was the first time that field crews had been able to use any device to physically interact with the fuel since the reactor meltdown.

“The observation device made contact with deposits at six locations on the pedestal,” TEPCO wrote in a short preliminary report that was published on Friday. “Deposits in five locations could be moved.” TEPCO posted a video of the robotic probe picking up pieces of melted nuclear fuel, which can be found here.

‘Newspapers helping fuel racism in football’: Sterling speaks out after alleged abuse at Chelsea https://briefnews.eu/newspapers-helping-fuel-racism-in-football-sterling-speaks-out-after-alleged-abuse-at-chelsea/ https://briefnews.eu/newspapers-helping-fuel-racism-in-football-sterling-speaks-out-after-alleged-abuse-at-chelsea/#respond Sun, 09 Dec 2018 12:28:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/newspapers-helping-fuel-racism-in-football-sterling-speaks-out-after-alleged-abuse-at-chelsea/

Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling has accused the UK press of “helping to fuel racism and aggression” by reporting differently on black and white players.

Sterling was allegedly racially abused in Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Footage from the game widely circulated on social media on showed a group of Chelsea fans hurling insults at Sterling, including a fan who allegedly branded the England international a “f***ing black c***.”

The England forward himself issued an Instagram post on Sunday in which he referred to the incident but also criticized the press for their reporting.

“Regarding what was said at the Chelsea game as you can see by reaction I just had to laugh because I don’t expect no better,” Sterling wrote.

The post was accompanied by a picture of a Daily Mail report on a young black Manchester City player, Tosin Adarabioyo, who has recently spent around $ 2.5 million on a property “despite never having started a Premier League game.”

Sterling contrasted that with a report on young white Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden, who was apparently lauded for a similar purchase “for his mum” to “set up a future.”

“You have two young players starting out their careers – both play for the same team, both have done the right thing, which is buy a new house for their mothers who have put in a lot of time and love into helping them get where they are,” Sterling wrote.

“But look at how the newspapers get their message across for the young black player and then for the young white player.

“I think this is unacceptable, both innocent, have not done a thing wrong but just by the way it has been worded, this young black kid is looked at in a bad light, which helps fuel racism and aggressive behaviour,” Sterling added.

Sections of the UK press have previously been accused of targeting Sterling with a racist slant on their reporting.

Meanwhile, London police have confirmed they are investigating claims that Sterling was racially abused by Chelsea fans in the teams’ Premier League meeting at Stamford Bridge.

London’s Metropolitan Police have confirmed they will investigate the footage, saying: “We are aware of a video circulating online in which it is claimed racial abuse was allegedly directed at a player.

“We will review the footage to determine whether any offences have been committed.”

Chelsea have also said they will investigate the footage and “take the strongest possible action where necessary.”

The images have prompted widespread outrage among pundits and on social media.

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand condemned the scenes, asking: “Are we going to let this type of racist behavior go on?”

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright also criticized the scenes, saying “the bad old days are back” and that there was “absolutely no doubt” what one of the men shouted at Sterling.

Replying to a Twitter post from Wright, former England star and prominent TV pundit Gary Lineker simply wrote: “despicable.”

The incident comes after a Tottenham Hotspur fan last weekend threw a banana skin onto the pitch in the direction of Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the North London derby.
