A group of tech-savvy Ukrainian soldiers is making drones and explosives to be used at the front line of the conflict in the country's Donbas region.

  • A team of young soldiers in Ukraine is building drones and explosives to be used on the front lines.
  • They are creating drones loaded with bombs to be used in combat in the Donbas region.
  • Some of the bombs come inscribed with messages like "happy birthday."

A new Agence France-Presse video shows a group of young Ukrainian troops making drones and bombs from a basement close to the front lines of the ongoing conflict in the country's Donbas region.

In the video, a group of around a dozen men in fatigues is seen working on small, remotely-piloted robots. AFP reported that the devices were scavenged from damaged aircraft.

The AFP video, which describes the men as a "group of 20-somethings," also shows a soldier named Varnak, who has been tasked with packing the robots with explosives.

"Their job is to make it move. My job is to make it explode, to fill it with explosives as effectively as possible so that it does the most damage to the enemy, or their tanks, or other military equipment," he told the outlet.

Also seen in the video were bombs made by the team, which come inscribed with personal messages to their Russian enemies, including the sarcastic "happy birthday" and the matter-of-fact "today is a Wednesday, man."

This picture shows bombs ready to be mounted on a drone in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, on September 25, 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
These message-inscribed bombs are meant to be dropped from drones.

Ukraine has been wresting large swathes of territory from the Russians, particularly in the Kharkiv region.

However, the skies over the highly-contested eastern Donbas have been the site of a fierce aerial battle, with the Ukrainians leaning on drones created by its fighters — many of whom are tech enthusiasts — to be flown in combat.

The US has also sent thousands of drones to Ukraine for use in the ongoing conflict. The figure includes 121 Phoenix Ghosts, a type of unmanned aerial system that can be launched by front-line troops for single attacks.

Ukrainian servicemen drive a T-72 tank on the frontline in eastern Ukraine on July 13, 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  • Some pro-Russian bloggers are criticizing the Russian military's mistakes.
  • Ukrainian counter-offenses have been retaking parts of the country from Russian forces.
  • "It's time to punish the commanders who allowed these kinds of things," said Maksim Fomin, a blogger.

Some pro-Russian bloggers are angry about their military's mistakes as the country retreats due to Ukrainian counter-attacks, according to a report from The New York Times.

In his nightly news address on Saturday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had liberated 700 square miles, including the city of Izium, since launching a counter-offensive earlier this month.

Insider is unable to verify the figures, and Ukraine has not allowed media on its front lines since the counteroffensive began.

The Kremlin's justification was that the decision to retreat was "to regroup" its troops, according to NYT.

Maksim Fomin, a pro-Russian blogger from eastern Ukraine, posted a video on the social network Telegram saying, "It's time to punish the commanders who allowed these kinds of things," referring to the failed response of the Russian army.

While his military struggled to hold its position, NYT reported President Vladimir Putin was at the grand opening of a Ferris wheel at a park in Moscow to commemorate the city's founding.

"You're throwing a billion-ruble party," said another pro-Russian blogger on Telegram who NYT didn't name: "What is wrong with you? Not at the time of such a horrible failure."

Criticisms have become louder over the last few months. In May, the Russian military attempted to cross the Siversky Donets River and lost dozens of armored vehicles, while more than 400 Russian soldiers were estimated to have been killed or wounded during the battle.

Following that event, Insider's Abbie Shull reported that Yuri Podolyaka, a war blogger with 2.1 million followers on Telegram, said in a video that he had been avoiding criticizing the Russian military but after the failure of the Siversky Donets river crossing, his patience was "overwhelmed."

"I emphasize, because of the stupidity of the Russian command — at least one battalion tactical group was burned, possibly two," Podolyaka said.

The response from pro-war bloggers follows calls from Russian lawmakers in St. Petersburg and Moscow to remove President Putin from power over the war in Ukraine.

As the war has dragged on, Russian military failures have become well-documented: One Russian paratrooper even wrote about his experiences, recalling clueless commanders, desperately searching for food, and comrades purposely shooting themselves in their legs to get sent home and receive a $ 50,000 payout from the government.

Former House doctor Olivia Wilde is bringing together some of the biggest names in fake medicine to pay tribute to the actual hospital workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The closest… I’ve ever come to being a doctor is putting on a costume,” the actress formerly known as Thirteen notes at the start of the epic mashup, before adding tongue-in-cheek, “And while it is close, it is not quite the same. I just want to say thank you to all the real healthcare heroes out there.”

Among the TV vets featured in the video are Wilde’s former House co-stars Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Jennifer Morrison, Kal Pen and Peter Jacobson.

Wilde also recruited cast members from ER (Julianna Margulies and Maura Tierney), Scrubs (Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke and Donald Faison) and Grey’s Anatomy (alums Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh and Kate Walsh). Nurse Jackie‘s Edie Falco, The Good Doctor‘s Freddie Highmore and Doogie Howser himself, Neil Patrick Harris, also make cameos.

‘Hanged’ child mannequins at shop front baffle Russians (PHOTO) https://briefnews.eu/hanged-child-mannequins-at-shop-front-baffle-russians-photo/ https://briefnews.eu/hanged-child-mannequins-at-shop-front-baffle-russians-photo/#respond Thu, 06 Dec 2018 18:47:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hanged-child-mannequins-at-shop-front-baffle-russians-photo/

A photo, showing child mannequins hanging from a shop’s front in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk, has caused a stir on social media, with some users deeming such “marketing” as extremely inappropriate.

The picture, showing a bizarre installation at the front of a small clothing shop in Krasnoyarsk, went viral this week. The photo shows four mannequins, dressed in winter clothes hanging from the shop’s front above an arch made of balloons.

Some Russians decried the “marketing” as inappropriate, arguing that it invoked strong associations with an execution by hanging.

“The marketing stunt might have worked, yet I won’t go into that shop,” one user said.

Since the shop lacks any signboard, some users suggested that the strange display was actually a witty DIY way to show what the shop was selling. Others, however, suggested that the mannequins were simply affixed high to prevent them from being snatched by thieves.

Some users posed much more serious questions, wondering why the mannequins were bare-footed, since it’s surely not a way to roll in Krasnoyarsk. The temperatures there currently reach well below zero, plunging to a whopping -30 degrees Celsius at night.

  • The “Fearless Girl” statue, a symbol of female can-do business spirit, has been removed from her spot opposite Wall Street’s “Charging Bull.”
  • The statue will move to a location in front of the New York Stock Exchange by the end of this year, said officials.
  • State Street Global Advisors placed the statue opposite Wall Street’s iconic “Charging Bull” statue in March 2017 as part of its campaign to pressure companies to add more women to their boards.
  • New York City extended the temporary installation permit of the girl until this year, upsetting the sculptor of the “Charging Bull.”

The “Fearless Girl” statue, a symbol of female can-do business spirit, has been plucked from her spot opposite Wall Street’s “Charging Bull” and is on the move to its new home in front of the New York Stock Exchange, officials said Wednesday.

The sculpture of a defiant-looking young girl has been removed from her original location at Bowling Green in preparation for her reinstallation, said State Street Global Advisors, the world’s third-largest asset manager that installed the statue last year.

WATCH: The terrifying moment a bear opens a front door – can you guess what happens next? https://briefnews.eu/watch-the-terrifying-moment-a-bear-opens-a-front-door-can-you-guess-what-happens-next/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-the-terrifying-moment-a-bear-opens-a-front-door-can-you-guess-what-happens-next/#respond Sun, 18 Nov 2018 07:33:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-the-terrifying-moment-a-bear-opens-a-front-door-can-you-guess-what-happens-next/

A viral video has captured the heart-stopping moment a bear managed to open the back door of a house.

At first, he looked through the glass section of the door at the people filming.

Suddenly, he jumped on his hind legs and with his paw, grabbed onto the door and swung it open.

He then stood staring in at the people inside the house with his ears pricked up.

While holding the door, he appeared to be wearing a collar and lead or some form of tie.

Suddenly, he looked up over his head as if someone threw something.

He then let go of the door and appeared to storm off in an angry mood.

The door slammed shut as the bear went back onto all fours and wandered off into the garden.

The bizarre video has since gone viral after being posted to sharing website Imgur.

The video has since had more than 129,000 views on the sharing website.

Many felt the bear was acting rather sassy for an animal.

One user remarked: “That head spin like ‘you weren’t good enough for me anyway!’”

Some bear-related puns were also aplenty: “Knock, knock. Who’s bear?”

Others were more optimistic: “At least he was nice enough to close the door.”

It isn’t the first time a bear has caused havoc on camera.

A man attempted to open his car door only for two bear cubs to quickly jump out.

They appeared to be eating the food in his car which they left behind after fleeing the scene.

Another man bravely played with a bear in the snow by throwing snow at him.

Thankfully the bear was happy to play and jumped along with the snow.

  • The controversial Serena Williams “angry baby” cartoon has been republished by The Herald Sun.
  • The Australian newspaper slapped the drawing on the front page of its Wednesday edition alongside the headline: “Welcome to PC World.”
  • The paper’s editor had previously tweeted his support for the cartoonist, while the artist himself said “the world has just gone crazy.”

The Herald Sun has defended its Serena Williams “angry baby” cartoon by republishing the drawing on the front page of its Wednesday edition.

The cartoon, drawn by the newspaper’s editorial cartoonist Mark Knight, was initially published on Monday. He portrayed Williams with exaggerated features like oversized lips, a big nose, and wiry hair. She was also seen jumping up and down near a broken tennis racket and a pacifier.

‘The Front Runner’ Has a Great Cast and a Snappy Script, But Something’s Missing [TIFF] https://briefnews.eu/the-front-runner-has-a-great-cast-and-a-snappy-script-but-somethings-missing-tiff/ https://briefnews.eu/the-front-runner-has-a-great-cast-and-a-snappy-script-but-somethings-missing-tiff/#respond Sun, 09 Sep 2018 20:39:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-front-runner-has-a-great-cast-and-a-snappy-script-but-somethings-missing-tiff/ the front runner review

Jason Reitman‘s The Front Runner turns a lens towards the three-week presidential campaign of Gary Hart and finds that it signaled the beginning of a whole new era of tabloid-based political coverage.

“It’s none of their business,” is a line that gets repeated a lot in The Front Runner, Jason Reitman’s new political drama based on the true story of Gary Hart’s failed bid for the presidency in 1988. The line is said by Hart himself, as played by Hugh Jackman. Again and again, Hart seems utterly perplexed as to why the American people would want to know literally anything personal about a man running for the highest office in the land.

It’s an enigmatic position from an enigmatic man. Despite being the focus of this feature film, Gary Hart remains a mystery. By the time The Front Runner comes to a close, we’re no closer to understanding who he was than when the movie started. And that’s probably exactly how Gary Hart would want it.

In 1987, Hart was the front runner (hey, that’s the title!) for the Democratic presidential nomination. His polling numbers were through the roof, and he launched his campaign with many assuming he was going to be the next President of the United States.

Three weeks later, it was all over.

Hart’s infidelities, which had been rumored about for years, finally caught up to him when The Miami Herald got an anonymous tip about one of Hart’s affairs – a tip that lead Herald reports to stake-out Hart’s townhouse and dig up some dirt. The infidelities of politicians are nothing new, and the journalists running through the background of The Front Runner acknowledge this. They also acknowledge that things change. The press, and the American people, were perhaps once willing to overlook such digressions. Not anymore.

Reitman’s film could be construed as being anti-press at times – the Herald journalists are portrayed as sleazy buffoons, stalking around in the shadows. One of them even seems to be going after Hart out of a grudge against being denied more access to the candidate. But to assume that is what Reitman is going for here is to only scratch the surface. Were some of the journalists’ methods in digging up Hart’s indiscretions unethical? Maybe. But that doesn’t excuse what Hart did. Or why he did it. The candidate all but tempts fate when he angrily tells a reporter to “follow him around” to prove that he’s not having affairs.

the front runner tiff

It’s very hard to get a read on Hart. At times, he seems almost delusional. When the story breaks, and everything comes crashing down, he keeps trying to go about business as usual, sure that this will all blow over. What’s going on in his head? What makes him tick? I don’t think The Front Runner has an answer, but Jackman does his absolute best to make the character electric. He’s charming and likable when he wants to be, but the minute even the most minor personal question comes up, he snaps – turns mean, hostile even. Jackman nails these polarizing moods.

Everyone around Jackman is pretty damn great as well. Vera Farmiga, always a welcomed presence, makes the most of her part as Hart’s wife. Her reactions to her husband’s infidelities are far more complex than you might expect, and Farmiga knows just how to sell that. Other standouts: J.K. Simmons as Hart’s weary campaign manager, Molly Ephraim as a conflicted staffer, and Mamoudou Athie as a Washington Post reporter just as perplexed at all this as Hart. Athie is particularly good, making a somewhat small part a scene stealer with minimal dialogue – he lets his eyes do most of the talking. Simmons is playing the type of part he can play in his sleep at this point, but that doesn’t make it any less fun to watch. And Ephraim brings a certain dignity to the proceedings, struggling with the fallout and the way the Hart campaign is handling (or rather, not handling) it all.

The script, by Reitman, Matt Bai and Jay Carson is snappy and funny, full of acerbic wit and punchlines that land. Reitman’s direction finds the filmmaker going off in another direction from his previous work. The TIFF page for The Front Runner says Reitman is “channelling Robert Altman”, and that’s not inaccurate. Reitman adopts Altman’s fondness for telling a story from several points of view, as well as Altman’s trademark overlapping dialogue. There’s even an opening scene done in one take that invokes Altman’s one-take opening of The Player. But The Front Runner is also far too slick to be fully compared to Altman’s work. It’s very much a Hollywood-type movie, even if Reitman made it independently.

The crackerjack script and dynamite performances are almost enough to get The Front Runner across the finish line, but there’s something missing. Like Gary Hart’s presidential campaign, it fizzles out just when it’s just getting started, and the audience is left wondering just what happened. Political journalism would only get more tabloidy following the Hart affair, but so did politics and politicians themselves, and I’m not quite sure if this film is reckoning with that. If The Front Runner is trying to issue a warning of things to come, I have some breaking news: it’s already too late.
