The finale saw Laura Nielson (played by Joanne Froggatt) finally get her hands on enough evidence to convict her rapist Andrew Earldom (Ioan Gruffudd).

However, she wasn’t able to get the type of justice she wanted as Andrew was nowhere to be found when the police turned up at his home to arrest him.

And in a shock twist, the gripping episode concluded with a shot of the surgeon dead in the marshes with his throat slit.

The horror scene left many viewers wondering whether Andrew had committed suicide or was murdered and dumped.

And fans of Liar will get their questions answered as ITV immediately confirmed there will be another series.

Filming will begin in 2019 and it will follow on from the tense storyline as the second series will be a classic whodunit plot.

Leading stars Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd will both reprise their roles in the drama which is written by Jack Williams and Harry Williams.

Polly Hill, ITV’s head of drama, said: “Liar has gripped the nation over the last six weeks and we’re delighted both Joanne and Ioan will return to play Laura and Andrew.

“Jack and Harry Williams are incredible storytellers and part two of Liar will have the audience equally gripped, as we find out who killed Andrew Earlham.”

Jack and Harry added: “We always hoped this story would return for its final chapter, and we can’t wait to be reunited with the brilliant Joanne and Ioan.”

So far, viewers have watched the school teacher post details of her sexual assault on social media and have a flashback, which appeared to confirm Andrew (played by Ioan Gruffudd) did rape her. 

However, with three episodes left to go, it’s anyone’s guess as to how it will all play out. 

But for fans worried that Laura’s ordeal may drag into a second season, Joanne, who plays the blonde beauty has confirmed it will come to an end in the series finale. 

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actress explained: “It’s definitely a thriller that you can watch and get to the end and feel like you can pay back for your investment and time and emotion into this story. 

“It’s not something that’s too open-ended – it’s a whole story, and a real roller coaster of a story.”

The 37-year-old went on to add that she was drawn to the series because of the shocking twist. 

“I had never done a thriller before,” Joanne explained. “It’s very cool, it’s very cinematic. 

“It’s very difficult to find something that feels original, whether it’s a story or a production, and I felt this was.”

Tonight’s episode will see as she digs deeper into his past. 

In a tense teaser from the fourth instalment, the teacher can be seen admitting to Felicity Cassidy (Clare Higgins) that she was sexually assaulted by her son-in-law. 

It’s clear that she isn’t a fan of Andrew as she quickly falls silent and looks away from her guest – will she provide a vital piece of information that could convict Andrew? 

Liar airs tonight on at 9pm.

TV insiders have revealed that ITV are already hoping that the show will become the new Broadchurch in terms of the broadcasters success, having attracted an audience of five million viewers.

A show source said: “The vision is already there for this to continue beyond series one.

“The hope was always that this show could become a major drama for ITV, and that looks to be happening.”

They continued to the Sun: “The wheels are already in motion for it to come back.”

Actress Joanne also hinted that writers Harry and Jack Williams have already got a storyline in mind for series two.

Speaking on Radio 2, the 37-year-old explained: “There’s definitely a satisfying conclusion to this series at the end, I promise.

“You won’t invest six hours and be disappointed. It won’t let you down.

“But there’s also a bit of an offshoot that makes for a possible furthering of the story, should it be successful.”

She added: “But there’s an absolute conclusion to this one.”

It comes as leading over having to play a rape storyline for a second time.

Liar continues tomorrow on at 9pm.

Starring alongside Ioan Gruffudd in the six-part thriller, Liar tells the story of a night that changes the lives of Laura Newell (Joanne) and Andrew Ellis (Ioan) forever.

Liar explores the devastating cost of deceit on both the couple and their friends and family, as secrets and lies are laid bare.

Speaking to Express.co.uk at a press screening, Joanne said: “Obviously, the show is a thriller. That’s ultimately what it is.

“I think nearly every thriller is built around a terrible event. In this case the accusation is sexual assault. Approaching it in an acting way you have to be playing the truth of your character.”

It’s not the first time Joanne, who played lady’s maid Anna Bates in Downton Abbey has dealt with the controversial subject of rape.

In 2015, viewers were left shocked when her gentle character was brutally attacked by visiting valet Mr Green (played by Nigel Harman).

Explaining her reservations of playing out a rape plot once again, Joanne said: “Yeah, absolutely. It was a thought process. I did sort of read it and go, ‘Oh, if only it was a different subject matter’.

“Obviously when I started Downton, my character was lovely and she wasn’t going through a traumatic time and it was sort of a love story. So I didn’t know I was going to be given that storyline. I still stand by that storyline completely and utterly, and the show for doing it.

“But then I sort of said to myself, ‘This character is so completely different in every way. This character doesn’t make the right decisions and this character is flawed’. Laura is flawed. She does things that  I had to ask ‘Why? Why? That’s just not a good thing to do’. That really interested me.”

The 37-year-old actress continued: “No matter which way the story goes, I just think it’s a great thing to be a part of something that can open up conversation about a sensitive subject matter.

“I’ve played a murderer three times, so you kind of go, ‘You know actually it’s okay,’ I’m an actress, I’ve been doing it for 20 years, sometimes subject matters are going to come around again.”

The former Downton Abbey star was promoting her new thriller to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, explaining what the premise is. 

The 37-year-old said: “The theme is lying and deceit and all the characters are embroiled in either their own lie or someone else’s. 

“Laura, who I play, and Andrew, who Ioan Gruffudd plays, meet and events unfold thoughout that night and they have very different opinions on what happens. 

“We do find out who’s lying about halfway through the six episodes which then adds to more twists and turns and ultimately it’s a thriller but it will hopefully open up discussions,” she teased. 

However, This Morning viewers believed that Joanne actually said, “We do find out he’s lying”, which prompted an angry reaction on Twitter as they thought the show had been ruined for them. 

One posted: “Was looking forward to #Liar but Joanne Froggatt just gave away that he’s lying, would have been nice to find out in own time.”

Another wondered: “Jo Froggatt just gave it away???”

However, some fans jumped to the actress’ defence, saying: “No, she said, ‘who was lying’ it did sound like she said ‘he’ but she said ‘who’, rewind it and give it a listen!”

The new thriller looks set to be a controversial one, as Laura and Andrew fight for what they believe is the truth on the matter of whether the former was raped or not – except both of their stories are different. 

Joanne admitted she had “reservations” about portraying sexual assault after her shocking Downton storyline which saw her character, Anna Bates, violently raped by Mr Green (played by Nigel Harman). 

The star admitted that she wanted to break the taboo of sexual assault and therefore felt that Liar was an important story to tell.

Liar starts tonight on ITV at 9pm.
