The French Navy’s newest frigate, FS Auvergne, fired rockets around 8pm GMT Monday, the Russian military said. “Airspace control has recorded rocket launches from the French frigate Auvergne,” the ministry’s statement read. The Auvergne is deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Syria.

The launch was detected around the same time as air traffic controllers at the Khmeimim Air Base “lost contact” with a military Il-20 aircraft during an attack of Israeli F-16 fighters on Latakia. Fourteen people were on board the plane at the time of the disappearance. A search and rescue mission is underway.

The IDF has refused to comment on the report. Despite the fact that Israel rarely acknowledges striking specific targets inside Syria, earlier this month the IDF admitted to hitting at least 202 “Iranian targets” in the country.

As tensions over Idlib rise, Turkey and Russia on Monday agreed to establish a “demilitarized zone” between militants and government troops as part of an effort to clear the remaining jihadists from Syria.

The deal will see India acquiring advanced Talwar-class frigates, also known as Project 11356 frigates.

Two of them will reportedly be built from scratch in a Goa shipyard, while the remaining two will be sent from Russia.

According to the Economic Times, it has until now been difficult for India to acquire weapons from Russia, due to US financial sanctions complicating the process. Those US sanctions were implemented under the CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) following the reunification of Crimea with Russia following a referendum – a move which the US and its Western allies have dubbed an “annexation.”

But in an apparent, if not bold, defiance of US measures, it looks like India will go ahead with the deal, circumnavigating the sanctions by clearing the funds in rupees rather than in dollars.

Indian Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman indicated on Monday that her country would not allow its ties with Russia to be impacted by US sanctions. She added that negotiations on the S-400 missile deal with Russia were almost complete, hinting that India was on course to finalize it soon. 

News of the reported frigate deal comes just after India signed what was branded a “milestone” agreement with the US. That agreement, signed in Delhi at the beginning of September, will purportedly see India gaining access to advanced defense systems.

The report comes just days after India’s external affairs minister, Sushma Swaraj, said that the two countries “enjoy a special and privileged strategic partnership…India attaches the highest importance to its relations with Russia.”

The US Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has announced the award of development contracts to five contenders for the FFG(X) program—a 20-ship class of “next-generation” guided-missile frigates intended to fill the gap in capabilities left by the retirement of the 1980s-era FFG-7 Oliver Hazard Perry class and not quite filled by the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program. Two of the contenders are modified, more heavily armed versions of the LCS designs, while the other three are based on ship designs being produced for other navies—or in one case, for the US Coast Guard.

Since each of the designs is based on an existing “parent” ship design and should use existing technologies (rather than radical new designs), the Navy is hoping to keep the cost of each frigate at $ 800 to $ 950 million—about double the cost of an LCS ship but half the cost of an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer.

The German Navy has a lot of problems right now. It has no working submarines, in part because of a chronic repair parts shortage. The Deutsche Marine is still flying helicopters older than their pilots—the Sea Lynx entered service in 1981, and the Sea King in 1969—and has long-delayed their replacement. And now the service is facing problems with its newest ships so severe that the first of the class failed its sea trials and was returned to the shipbuilders in December.

As Christian Mölling, a defense-industry expert at the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, told the Wall Street Journal’s William Wilkes in January, German military procurement is “one hell of a complete disaster. It will take years to sort this problem out.”

The Baden-Wurttemberg class frigates were ordered to replace the 1980s-era Bremen class ships, all but of two which have been already retired. At 149 meters (488 feet) long with a displacement of 7,200 metric tons (about 7900 US tons), the Baden-Wurttembergs are about the size of destroyers and intended to reduce the size of the crew required to operate them (in this way, they are similar to the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) classes and the Zumwalt-class destroyers).

The Russian warships, a frigate named Admiral Essen and submarine named Krasnodar, fired Kalibr cruise missiles on combat vehicles and militants outside the Syrian city of Palmyra, the Defense Ministry said. 

The four cruise missiles were fired from the eastern Mediterranean, it noted in a statement. The submarine fired its missiles while submerged.

According to the MoD, “[the ships] targeted an area east of Palmyra, where the militants’ heavy weaponry and manpower were located. The militants moved there from Raqqa. All targets have been destroyed,” it said.

The US, Turkish, and Israeli militaries received appropriate warning in advance of the missile launches through active hotlines, the Defense Ministry added.

On May 25, a large Islamic State convoy, comprising 39 vehicles and 120 militants, was spotted outside Raqqa, a Defense Ministry source told RIA Novosti on Saturday.

“The terrorist convoy of 39 pickup trucks was detected and destroyed by the Air Force on its way to Palmyra,” the source said, adding that the vehicles were equipped with large-caliber machine guns.

The Russian Navy also fired Kalibr cruise missiles on militant positions in Syria last year. The Black Sea Fleet carried out three cruise missile strikes on terrorist targets in Syria back in August, destroying a command post and munitions production site. The missiles, which targeted Al-Nusra Front positions, flew over unpopulated areas, the Russian military said.

In October of 2015, four Russian Navy warships fired a total of 26 missiles from the Caspian Sea at positions Islamic State in Syria. The precision weapons hit all 11 targets after flying some 1,500 kilometers, according to the military. Preparation for the launches involved communications with Iran and Iraq, as the missiles had to pass their through the airspace of those countries to reach Syria.

The Defense Ministry said it had worked with its partners in plotting the flight path to assure that the missiles traveled only over desolate areas and posed no danger to civilians.

Russia’s Admiral Grigorovich cruise missile-armed frigate has joined the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean, following joint Russian-Turkish military exercises.

“Today the Black Sea frigate ‘Admiral Grigorovich,’ under the command of Captain 3rd-Class Anatoly Velichko has joined the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

LIVE UPDATES: US missile strike against Syria

The Admiral Grigorovich took part in Russian-Turkish PASSEX military drills, and was a host vessel during the unofficial visit of the Turkish Naval Forces to Novorossiysk, Russia from April 3 to 5.

The move comes on the heels of the US bombardment of a Syrian air base with 59 Tomahawk missiles on Friday. There is, however, no official indication it is has been done in retaliation to the strike.

In November 2016, the vessel, alongside the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, took part in a large-scale operation against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front in Syria, firing missiles at terrorist targets. The strikes killed at least 30 terrorists, including three field commanders.

The Russian frigate ‘Admiral Grigorovich’ has left the port of Sevastopol, Crimea, heading to the Mediterranean Sea to join the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the fleet’s head of communications has said.

“Today, under the plan of combat training, the cutting-edge frigate ‘Admiral Grigorovich’ has left Sevastopol and set a course for the Black Sea straits. The military vessel, under the command of Captain 3rd-Class Anatoly Velichko, has embarked on its third long-distance mission, during which it will carry out tasks as part of the Russian Navy’s permanent task force in the Mediterranean,” Captain 1st-Class Vyacheslav Trukhachyov said on Monday.

The military vessel is equipped with cruise missiles “Caliber”, a defense missile system, a gun mount 100mm in caliber, anti-aircraft equipment and torpedoes.

The frigate is said to be joining the Russian fleet near the Syrian coast late on Tuesday, a source told Interfax.

The ‘Admiral Grigorovich’ is the first among six frigates obtained by the Russian Navy seven years ago. Its draught is 4,000 tons, and speed is estimated at 30 knots (55kph).

Earlier this month, the aircraft carrier ‘Admiral Kuznetsov’ and the nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser ‘Peter the Great’ returned from their mission in Syria to the main northern base of the Russian Navy, Severomorsk. This followed the January statement, issued by the head of the Russian general staff, Valery Gerasimov, that Russia is starting to curb its naval presence in Syria after a decision by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
