If you were hoping the stop-motion Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio movie coming to Netflix would turn out to be family entertainment like the Disney version, think again. The Oscar-winning filmmaker, who has been trying to get this film made for years, recently confirmed that the adaptation is to be political, and not geared specifically towards children. Of course, with del Toro involved, you probably could’ve guessed that.

During the recent Marrakech Film Festival (via THR), Guillermo del Toro took the time to talk about the stop-motion Pinocchio movie he’s working on for Netflix. “It’s not a Pinocchio for all the family,” del Toro said, adding:  “Of course [the movie is political]. Pinocchio during the rise of Mussolini, do the math. A puppet during the rise of fascism, yes, it is.” Are you ready for a super-political Pinocchio about fascism, world? If not, you better get ready. Del Toro went on to add: “Rarely can you get in productive discussions in real life right now, it’s so tense. It’s much easier for you to listen to me if I tell you ‘Once upon a time…’”

The Shape of Water director has been trying to get his adaptation of Pinocchio made for several years now, and it was assumed that the film would join the long list of unmade Guillermo del Toro projects. But fate stepped in – in the form of Netflix. The streaming service rescued the film from oblivion, and now del Toro will co-direct with Fantastic Mr. Fox animation director Mark Gustafson, from a script by Over The Garden Wall and Adventure Time writer Patrick McHale.

During the Q&A, del Toro compared his Pinocchio to Frankenstein’s Monster, because of course he did. “He’s a creature that is created through unnatural means from a father that he then distances [himself] from, and has to learn about failure and pain and loneliness,” del Toro commented.

Back when the Netflix project was announced, del Toro said:

“In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember. After the incredible experience we have had on Trollhunters, I am grateful that the talented team at Netflix is giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to introduce audiences everywhere to my version of this strange puppet-turned-real-boy.”

I’m a big fan of del Toro’s work, and all of this sounds enticing. The fact that he wants to tell a Pinocchio with political overtones is fascinating, and will no doubt set the film apart from previous versions. However, if you’re hoping for an old-fashioned, family-friendly Pinocchio, you’re in luck. Disney is currently turning their animated take on the material into a live-action movie, and they want Tom Hanks to play Geppetto.

WATCH: Tourists surprised to be joined by this friendly creature in safari park https://briefnews.eu/watch-tourists-surprised-to-be-joined-by-this-friendly-creature-in-safari-park/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-tourists-surprised-to-be-joined-by-this-friendly-creature-in-safari-park/#respond Tue, 04 Sep 2018 21:41:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-tourists-surprised-to-be-joined-by-this-friendly-creature-in-safari-park/

The viral video was captured at Taigan Safari park in Ukraine.

A group of tourists were in the buggy when a lion decided to jump in the front with the driver.

Thankfully he was friendly and leaned on him in affection.

The tour guide can be heard saying: “Oh, what a tongue he has!”

The tourists seem nonplussed and film the interaction with the lion, who it is later revealed is named Filya.

She then perched on the front seat, leading the tour guide to say “oh my god” while being sat on by the animal.

He got out of the car due to the sheer weight of the animal on top of him.

The lion then puts its hand on the wheel and tried to turn the vehicle while it was stationary.

Filya then grew bored and jumped into the back with the tourists who continued to film and pet the animal

As the lion jumps up, she nuzzled the young travellers and even licked one on the face.

The video ended with them all cuddling the docile animal who sat down on top of them all.

The park is known for being able to get close to the animals, with owner Oleg Zubkov, 50, renowned for his skills with the animal.

In the video, he told anyone who felt uncomfortable they could get out, of the buggy.

None of them took him up on his offer in a bid to stay close to the animal.

However earlier this year, a woman was bitten by a different lion at the same park.

While she survived after being rushed to the hospital, she said that it “bit through my right arm and used it to drag me like a puppet,” according to the Daily Mail.

In a different viral video, another tourist received a friendly lick from an animal.

This time a giraffe decided to give one man a very long lick when leaning over a fence.

Friendly fox genomes help us understand the genetics of behavior https://briefnews.eu/friendly-fox-genomes-help-us-understand-the-genetics-of-behavior/ https://briefnews.eu/friendly-fox-genomes-help-us-understand-the-genetics-of-behavior/#respond Sun, 12 Aug 2018 01:25:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/friendly-fox-genomes-help-us-understand-the-genetics-of-behavior/

Since 1959, a unique breeding experiment has been underway in southwestern Siberia. Its founder, Dmitry Belyaev, was intrigued by the characteristics of domestication, and he observed that foxes varied in their responses to humans—some fearful, some aggressive, and a few displaying “a quiet exploratory reaction without fear or aggression.” What would happen, he wondered, if you bred just the most chilled-out foxes?

Within a few generations of doing just this, remarkable transformations were underway. The foxes were calmer and friendlier when approached—and also more baby-faced, with floppy ears, patchy coloring, and curlier tails. This group of tame foxes, along with a second group bred for their aggression, have been transformational in our understanding of domestication.

And now, genetics have entered the mix. An international team of researchers have published an exploration of the genomes of the tame, aggressive, and wild foxes, looking for clues that could illuminate the link between genes and domestication. The results point to where in the genome the most interesting differences show up, and they may help to identify genes that could be illuminating to study in more detail.

Argentina pulls out of pre-World Cup friendly with Israel in Jerusalem amid Palestinian outcry https://briefnews.eu/argentina-pulls-out-of-pre-world-cup-friendly-with-israel-in-jerusalem-amid-palestinian-outcry/ https://briefnews.eu/argentina-pulls-out-of-pre-world-cup-friendly-with-israel-in-jerusalem-amid-palestinian-outcry/#respond Wed, 06 Jun 2018 00:37:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/argentina-pulls-out-of-pre-world-cup-friendly-with-israel-in-jerusalem-amid-palestinian-outcry/ A friendly match between the Argentinian and Israeli squads, set to take place in Jerusalem on Saturday, was nixed after Palestinians called out the team for “whitewashing” Israeli occupation and the crackdown against protesters.

Pressure for the football match to be cancelled has been rising since last week, with Palestinian activists staging protests near the prospective venue in West Jerusalem and sport officials penning letters to the Argentinian authorities, asking them to revise the decision in light of the recent deadly Gaza clashes and Israel’s insistence on holding the game in Jerusalem.

While there has been no official word on the fate of the match so far, Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain appeared to confirm the news while speaking to ESPN on Tuesday.

“They’ve finally done the right thing,” he said, referring to the Argentine Football Association’s apparent decision to scrap the game, which was scheduled to be the Lionel Messi-led team’s last warm-up before it takes the pitch at the World Cup in Russia next week.

In a statement on Monday, the Palestinian Football Association threatened to thwart Argentina’s bid to host the World Cup in 2030, if the game takes place as planned.

“The Palestinian Football Family calls upon the Argentinian Football association, and the Argentinian national team, to refrain from being used, by politicians in the Israeli Government, as a tool to normalize the illegal annexation of Occupied East Jerusalem, and to whitewash the Israeli systematic violations of international law and human rights,” the association said in a strongly-worded statement.

Last week, The association’s chief, Jibril Rajoub, launched a personal broadside at Argentine’s biggest star, Messi. Noting that the forward “has tens of millions of fans in the Arab and Muslim countries,” Rajoub went as far as to call on this multi-million army to “burn their shirts which bear his name and posters” unless the Argentinian refuses to partake in the game.

The calls for the Argentinian team to withdraw were echoed by Arab Israeli MPs, with Israeli Knesset member Yousef Jabareen (Joint List) meeting with the Argentinian ambassador to Israel last Friday. The MP said that by agreeing to play in Jerusalem, the Argentinian footballers would condone the “gross human rights violations” by the Israeli government while emboldening it further with a “dangerous message.”

As the cancellation emerged as the most likely option, the issue was raised at the highest intergovernmental level. It was reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, asking him to throw his support behind the match.

However, Macri reportedly told Netanyahu that the final decision was out of his reach, Haaretz reported.

The match was originally set to take place at the Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa. However, the Israeli authorities recently moved the game to Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium, even though it has fewer seats.

Friendly Foes: BMW and Daimler Form Mobility Joint Venture https://briefnews.eu/friendly-foes-bmw-and-daimler-form-mobility-joint-venture/ https://briefnews.eu/friendly-foes-bmw-and-daimler-form-mobility-joint-venture/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 03:52:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/friendly-foes-bmw-and-daimler-form-mobility-joint-venture/ BMW's DriveNow

German automakers BMW Group and Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, have announced a joint venture for mobility services, the two rivals have announced. The partnership, which is still subject to approval by regulators, would combine and expand the two luxury carmakers’ current suite of car sharing, parking, ride hailing, electric-vehicle charging, and multimodal transportation services.

Each company will have a 50 percent stake in the venture. BMW chairman Harald Krüger said in a release that combining the companies’ mobility services will move their customers closer to digital, emissions-free mobility. “We remain competitors when it comes to the best premium vehicles,” Krüger said. “The planned merger of our mobility services will pool our resources and sends a strong signal to our new competitors.”

–

In some areas, the partnership will combine similar, existing services that both companies have, such as Daimler’s Car2Go car-sharing company and DriveNow, the BMW-owned counterpart. But the venture also gives each side access to areas where one company could be ahead of the other: It will focus on Daimler’s taxi and ride-hailing services, mytaxi, Chauffeur Privé, and Clever Taxi, as well as on BMW’s parking-assist companies, ParkNow and Parkmobile, and its EV-charging companies, ChargeNow and Digital Charging Solutions.

“As pioneers in automotive engineering, we will not leave the task of shaping future urban mobility to others,” Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche said in the release. “There will be more people than ever before without a car who will still want to be extremely mobile. We want to combine our expertise and experience to develop a unique, sustainable ecosystem for urban mobility.”

John Stones issues BOLD message to England fans ahead of Italy friendly https://briefnews.eu/john-stones-issues-bold-message-to-england-fans-ahead-of-italy-friendly/ https://briefnews.eu/john-stones-issues-bold-message-to-england-fans-ahead-of-italy-friendly/#respond Mon, 26 Mar 2018 02:34:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/john-stones-issues-bold-message-to-england-fans-ahead-of-italy-friendly/

The Manchester City defender is confident Three Lions fans will play their part in building belief in the high-risk philosophy Gareth Southgate believes will give England their best chance in Russia and beyond.

Southgate is prepared for his defenders to risk making individual mistakes in order to get them contributing to play more, and the England fans must be of the same mindset.

“If a mistake happens, it happens,” Stones said.

“You’ve got to stay mentally strong and not shy away from it because you’ve seen against Holland we created a lot of chances from playing out from the back and that’s a massive thing.

“If we’ve got that quality that all the big teams do have then we have to stay mentally strong and keep the fans behind us and stay in that positive mind-frame.

“I think the fans at Wembley, or wherever we go, are behind us and they turned out in their numbers again in Amsterdam and we want to win for them, for ourselves and for every England fan.

“This is the right way. I’m probably biased in that respect but everyone’s on-board with it.”

England are now on a run of five successive team-sheets having experimented with Kyle Walker in a back three.

Joe Gomez faces a late fitness test after limping out of the Holland game within the first 10 minutes, while further up the field, Jack Wilshere has already been sent back to Arsenal after damaging his knee in training.

Even regular football for Arsenal may not be enough for the injury-plagued 26-year-old to book a place on the plane with Southgate increasingly sticking with the names he has worked with.

Stones, for instance, has not started a Premier League match for two months, but said: “I’ve had the players’ backing and the manager’s backing. It’s one of those things where the team’s winning games and playing well, and you can’t get back in just like that.

“I’ve got to keep working hard and that’s what I’ve been doing. Still learning while I’m on the sidelines, that’s a massive thing. You can’t switch off and when your chance comes you’re ready to take it.”

The EU wants to make finance more environmentally friendly https://briefnews.eu/the-eu-wants-to-make-finance-more-environmentally-friendly/ https://briefnews.eu/the-eu-wants-to-make-finance-more-environmentally-friendly/#respond Thu, 22 Mar 2018 20:58:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-eu-wants-to-make-finance-more-environmentally-friendly/

TO GAUGE an issue’s importance, a guest list is a good place to start. The one for a conference in Brussels on March 22nd to discuss the European Union’s “action plan” on sustainable finance features heavy-hitters including Emmanuel Macron, France’s president, and Michael Bloomberg, a former mayor of New York who campaigns on climate change. Given that sustainable finance is well-established, what action does the EU think is needed?

Investing with an eye to environmental or social issues, not just financial returns, has become mainstream in the past decade. According to the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance (GSIA), $ 23trn, or 26% of all assets under management in 2016, were in “socially responsible investments” that take account of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. New asset classes have sprung up. According to SEB, a Swedish bank, the issuance of green bonds, the proceeds of which are invested in environmental projects, reached $ 163bn in 2017, up from less than $ 500m in 2008.

Yet standards are a…

‘Game Night’ Trailer: When Friendly Fun Turns Deadly Hilarious https://briefnews.eu/game-night-trailer-when-friendly-fun-turns-deadly-hilarious/ https://briefnews.eu/game-night-trailer-when-friendly-fun-turns-deadly-hilarious/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 20:45:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-night-trailer-when-friendly-fun-turns-deadly-hilarious/ Game Night Trailer

The last time Rachel McAdams got caught up in R-rated comedy shenanigans, it was in Wedding Crashers back in 2005. Now, she’s teamed up with Jason Bateman for what promises to be a deadly hilarious couples’ night.

Game Night follows Jason Bateman and McAdams as a married couple who were expecting to enjoy a weekly game night with their friends played by Kyle Chandler (Super 8), Billy Magnussen (Bridge of Spies), Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe), Lamorne Morris (New Girl), and Kylie Bunbury (Under the Dome). But when the game turns into an all-too-real kidnapping mystery, the night takes some strange and dangerous turns.

Game Night Trailer

This trailer hits a lot of the same beats from the first one, but it peppers some new jokes and scenes in there as well, letting Lamorne Morris and Billy Magnussen get some great lines, as well as showing us how our main characters met. But it’s Jason Bateman’s dry, sarcastic reactions that really take the spotlight. While I’m not entirely sure the movie will deliver a satisfying experience that lives up to the fantastic premise, I’m hopeful that it will at least bring some big laughs.

However, I hope that the end of this trailer isn’t spoiling the third act. As Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman are in pursuit of the kidnapped Kyle Chandler, they’re trying to stop a plane from taking off and that seems like a pretty big setpiece that would fit well in the third act of the movie. Hopefully, there’s more to it than that. Plus, that scene also reveals Michael C. Hall in the movie for the first time and it looks like he’s playing the primary villain.

Game Night is directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the Spider-Man: Homecoming writers who were recently hired to direct The Flash for Warner Bros. Pictures. Maybe this movie served as a bit of an audition for them to direct the comic book flick. We’ll know better when the movie arrives later this month.

Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams star as Max and Annie, whose weekly couples game night gets kicked up a notch when Max’s charismatic brother, Brooks (Kyle Chandler), arranges a murder mystery party, complete with fake thugs and faux federal agents. So when Brooks gets kidnapped, it’s all part of the game…right? But as the six uber-competitive gamers set out to solve the case and win, they begin to discover that neither this “game”—nor Brooks—are what they seem to be. Over the course of one chaotic night, the friends find themselves increasingly in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn. With no rules, no points, and no idea who all the players are, this could turn out to be the most fun they’ve ever had…or game over.

Game Night hits theaters on February 23, 2018.
