It seems there’s a Jollibee on every corner in the Philippines — in fact, it’s one of the few chains that has successfully maintained market dominance over McDonald’s in its home country. Even as McDonald’s ramps up its Asian expansion, Jollibee has held its own with 978 locations compared with 521 McDonald’s.

Now, Jollibee is coming for McDonald’s on its home turf. The chain has 36 locations in the US and plans to open new restaurants in states including Illinois and Florida this year. Jollibee also acquired a 50% stake in American burger chain Smashburger in 2015, and is reportedly considering a deal to acquire British sandwich chain Pret A Manger. 

The brand holds a special place in the heart of many Filipino expats. Jian DeLeon wrote in First We Feast that the chain offered such people “a nostalgic taste of home at a price most of us can swallow.”

We, on the other hand, enter not as Filipino food experts but as two fast-food loving New Yorkers eager to see how the growing chain compares to the competition.

Jollibee has 36 locations across the US, mostly in California. Luckily, there’s one in Woodside, Queens, right off the subway.

The place was packed when we arrived about 1 p.m. The lunch rush was in full swing, and scouting for a seat proved to be quite the task. Fortunately, an employee alerted us as soon as two spots became available.

Ordering was a breeze, though we were a bit thrown by the menu’s breadth of options. While we are fast-food connoisseurs, we don’t typically see spaghetti served alongside fried chicken and burgers at American chains. The cashier was extremely friendly and accommodating, even when we came back twice to order more items we previously forgot.

In the fast-paced, cut-throat chicken industry, it’s hard to set yourself apart. 

However, a regional chain from North Carolina isn’t content to stay in the South any longer. 

Bojangles’, with 728 locations nationwide, is on an expansion spree. But, if the chain wants to catch on outside the Carolinas, it needs to take on international players — like the ubiquitous Church’s Chicken, with more than 1,700 locations worldwide. 

In an effort to see if Bojangles’ could keep up with the flock, we visited Bojangles’ and Church’s as part of our whirlwind chicken tour. 

Bojangles’ was founded in 1977 in Charlotte, North Carolina. We visited one in Charlottesville, Virginia.

KFC is one of Britons most-loved fast food restaurants – and chicken fans are set to go wild with the latest news. 

Just Eat has announced KFC has joined the takeaway delivery platform and is now available to order through both the Just Eat app and website. 

The world-famous fried chicken is currently available to order across 30 KFC restaurants in London with more to come this year.

The launch of the iconic chicken brand on the delivery platform is in response to the UK’s growing appetite for home delivery. 

Just Eat report chicken as one of the top five cuisines ordered through the service in the past 12 months.

Graham Corfield, UK Managing Director at Just Eat said: “We’re thrilled to welcome KFC to the Just Eat platform, offering our customers in London an even wider choice of food than ever before.  

“We’re adding KFC restaurants every week, meaning more customers will be able to enjoy KFC’s world famous chicken at the click of a button in their area very soon.”

Menu options available to order include the KFC Sharing Buckets, Popcorn Chicken, Boneless Banquets, wraps and a wide range of sides.

It comes after the frenzy around KFC Chizza; the pizza addition to chicken shop’s menu sent Twitter into meltdown. 

The Chizza hit headlines yesterday when the no-bread pizza went viral online. 

It’s not been confirmed where the frenzy started but an image of the fried chicken pizza base with tomato and cheese melted on top has been viewed by millions. 

FC told Express.co.uk: “We’re always looking to introduce delicious new products to our menu, and are really excited about the incredible response Chizza has received around the world. Keep your eyes peeled!”

What may have momentarily seemed like some kind of weird supernatural happening was actually an electrical surge caused by a failed power line component, according to an AP report. Local media said that “damage ranged from residents losing a refrigerator to losing all appliances in the kitchen or losing everything in the house.”

Up to a quarter of the town’s 4,000 residents were thought to have been affected by the incident, with many reporting fried computers, burned electrical meters, and damaged power strips. Some even spoke of fluorescent lights suddenly exploding.

When the surge occurred, the high volume of calls flooding into the emergency services forced the local fire department to call for extra help from three nearby facilities.

As for the local cops, the incident tripped its main office radio, causing them to miss the first emergency calls. The first they knew something was up was when they heard the fire trucks roaring through the town.

“We were fortunate that nobody was hurt,” Tracy Zents, the director of Jefferson County’s Department of Emergency Services, told AP.

Power for part of Brookville was lost at around lunchtime but was fully restored by late afternoon.

Scott Surgeoner, a spokesperson for energy provider FirstEnergy, said the cause of the outage wasn’t entirely clear, but mentioned that insulator failures – like the one suspected in this case – can occur after years of being exposed to harsh weather.

“It’s similar to an alternator in a car,” he told AP.  “Why does it fail after a few years? Mine might last for 10 years, but yours might last for 5 … Any equipment that is on a pole in the air and is subjected to weather 365 days a year, 24 hours a day is susceptible to failure.”

Surgeoner pointed out that affected residents can file claims to their local provider and also use their homeowner’s insurance to cover any damage.

Fried chicken is making headlines in the fast food world. According to Business Insider, of the 100 biggest restaurant chains in the U.S., three of the five fastest-growing are chicken concepts. In addition, the chicken sector has been in the No. 1 category in the fast-food business by purchase consideration since last April.

Now that fried chicken is a hot item on the menu, many fast food restaurants are finding unique ways to incorporate it.

Taco Bell introduced the new Naked Chicken Chalupa – a Chalupa that swaps a traditional tortilla shell with fried chicken – on Thursday. Taco Bell is also testing Fried Chicken Chips in Irvine, California. The chain has also hinted that a breakfast Naked Chicken Chalupa could be in the works.

McDonald’s hopped on the fried-chicken train last week with its new test item, the Chicken McGriddle breakfast sandwich – a simplified take on the southern staple, chicken and waffles.

According to McDonald’s, the sandwich is a combination of chicken from the McChicken sandwich and the pillow-soft pancake-bun of the McGriddle.

Arby’s also relaunched its fried chicken meal last August and plans to add more chicken sandwiches to the menu in 2017. According to BI, the revamped sandwich is made with a larger chicken filet than the brand’s previous version that’s marinated in buttermilk and coated in a buttermilk breading.

Arby’s senior vice president of product development Jim Taylor claims that the sandwich is juicer and more flavorful, with a mix of sweet and savory that “aims to excite more areas of your palate.”

“I think America has always had a love affair with fried chicken,” Taylor told Business Insider. “Let’s face it, a lot of things taste great fried.”

Business Insider reports that this sudden interest in fried chicken at restaurants better known for burritos, burgers, and roast beef sandwiches is based on a combination of factors.

Economic Factors

In 2016, chicken prices were significantly lower than beef prices, giving chicken chains a competitive advantage in the burger-centric world of fast food.

Chicken Is No Longer Seen As “Unhealthy”

In the ’90s and early 2000s, fried chicken was widely regarded as an unhealthy choice. And KFC, one of the largest chicken chains at the time, wasn’t doing much to help fried chicken’s reputation. However, in 2016, fried chicken transformed into a high-quality menu item.

Celebrity chef David Chang’s fried chicken concept Fuku and Shake Shack’s Chick’n Shack sandwich played a key role in making quick-service chicken trendy.

“The Chick’n Shack embodies our modern approach to fine casual American cooking,” Shake Shack Culinary Director Mark Rosati said in a statement.

Chick-fil-A also helped usher fried chicken into the fast-food world by becoming the No. 1 chicken chain in the U.S. by sales. In 2015, the company reported that same-store growth was in the double-digits.
