Bloating is the swelling in the diameter of the tummy area, and it is often accompanied by abdominal pain. While it could be a sign of serious conditions like ovarian cancer or a gluten intolerance, it is more often caused by a big, indulgent meal – like those likely to be experienced at Christmas. However, boosting your levels of probiotics – ‘good’ bacteria – in your diet can help. They can be found in certain foods, such as kefir, some yoghurts, kimchi, sourdough bread and sauerkraut, as well as supplements. “Probiotics are very important for the health of the digestive tract, and they can help stop issues like bloating,” said Udo Erasmus, an expert in nutrition and founder of Udo’s Choice (udoerasmus.com), to Express.co.uk. “While fermented foods are great, taking probiotics as a capsule means you don’t have to wait six weeks for a cabbage to turn into sauerkraut.” However, he warned there is more you should know about supplements than simply popping them with breakfast if you want to enjoy their full potential. “Probiotics are very sensitive, and if you carry them around in your bag with you lose about one to two per cent of their potency a day,” he explained. “One of the reasons for this is that the two key types – Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum – should always be stored in the fridge. Similarly, never leave them on the shelf, otherwise they will die and won’t be effective. “If you refrigerate them you lose only about 40 per cent potency in a year, if you don’t you lose 100 per cent potency in just a 100 days.” He added that they should always be kept dry and recommended opening a capsule and brushing your teeth with the contents after each meal to get the most benefit, noting that it’s not possible to overdose on them. Research has shown that probiotics don’t just help your digestion, and have a multitude of other health benefits too. These include improved brain function, liver health, immunity, and decreased stress, depression and anxiety. They can also play a powerful role in getting your body free from bugs if you’ve been prescribed antibiotics – particularly during the festive season. “Antibiotics can be life-saving, but we’re over-using them,” said Erasmus. “Bacteria are very smart, and while they may initially be killed, antibiotic-resistant strains develop. “People should be taking probiotics the entire time they are taking antibiotics – from before the course of antibiotics, for their duration and after. “In fact, all the time is most beneficial. That is the only way you can prevent a window for re-infection. “They can also restore your ‘friendly’ bacteria which antibiotics kill off along with ‘bad bacteria’.”

BLOATING is likely to be a frequent issue this Christmas, and taking probiotic supplements could help – just remember to store them in the fridge.![]()
Refrigeration white goods that have non-flame retardant plastic backing pass existing safety standards, but the testing is inadequate and does not come close to replicating the cause of a real house fire, Which? said.
The current British Standard requires refrigerators to pass a glow wire test to assess their fire resistance, which involves putting a hot wire through a sample of the appliance’s backing material and seeing if it catches alight.
All fridges, freezers and fridge freezers on the UK market pass this test.
But under more “stringent” testing by Which?, two separate samples of the plastic backing set alight after just 10 seconds, with a pass given if it could withstand an open flame for at least 30 seconds.
Similar testing of metal and aluminium laminate-backed appliances found neither caught alight after the 30 second test, or following a full five minutes of being subjected to an open flame.
Which? said almost half of the most popular fridges, freezers and fridge freezers currently on the market (46 per cent) had non-flame retardant plastic backing and would have been subject to the “inadequate” method of fire safety testing.
The watchdog is calling on manufacturers to implement the tougher testing immediately and voluntarily.
Which? has stopped recommending the purchase of any fridge, freezer, or fridge freezer with non-flame retardant plastic backing, although it says such fires are rare and is not calling for a recall.
Its own analysis of government fire data in July 2015 found that only 7% of fires caused by faulty appliances involved fridge freezers, fridges or freezers.
But it believes that non-flame retardant plastic backing material presents a safety risk due to its potential to allow an existing fire to spread and future models should not be made in this way.
Alex Neill, Which? managing director of home and product services, said: “Manufacturers must put consumer safety first and immediately stop making fridges, freezers and fridge freezers to a standard that is clearly deficient and could potentially be putting people’s lives at risk.
“This once again shows that the UK’s product safety regime is simply not fit-for-purpose and the Government can no longer continue to allow it to fail.”
In last night’s episode of the baking show, the remaining 10 contestants were put to the test as they showed off their patisserie skills during bread week.
But viewers were more distracted by a short scene which saw presenter Sandi Toksvig open a purple fridge to reveal her co-host Noel Fielding inside.
The comedian crouched down in the fridge and updated the contestants on how much time they had left to present their finale bakes to judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
He announced: “Bakers, you are half way through your challenge. Half way through,” before Sandi closed the door on him.
While producers would have most likely wanted the scene to come across as light-hearted and funny, many slammed the show for sending out the wrong message to children.
One person wrote: “Why shut someone on a fridge. So irresponsible and stupid #GBBO #GBBO2017.”
“@noelfielding11 hiding in the fridge is irresponsible and could lead to child deaths from replicating #fail #GBBO,” said another.
A third commented: “Seriously, hiding in a fridge? What do health & safety have to say about that? #GBBO.”
“GBBO Great British Bake Off – Noel Fielding hiding and being shut in a fridge by Sandi Toksvig. Great message to all the kids watching,” added one outraged viewer.
Elsewhere, Noel caught the attention of viewers for another reason as many took to social media to comment on his eccentric blue shirt which looked like it featured pictures of nipples.
Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 9pm on Channel 4.

FOOD poisoning affects millions of people worldwide each year, and can even result in death. However certain foods, such as eggs, place you most at risk.![]()
Chicken can make you unwell if stored incorrectly in the fridge.
Now, it is claimed, the definitive way to store chicken – along with other food like milk, butter and cheese, has been revealed.
Online food retailer MuscleFood.com has highlighted exactly where you need to be storing food and drink in the fridge.
They have also listed the best place in the fridge for wine. So, where should you be storing the foods listed below?
Raw meat (including raw poultry and fish) should always be wrapped and sealed tightly, they retailer claims.
This is to stop the product dripping onto other foods. All raw meat can be stored together. A great place to store it is in the bottom shelf of the fridge.
This is to prevent cross-contamination with the ‘ready to eat’ products.
Despite many people placing this in the fridge door, milk is best stored on the top or second shelf of the fridge.
This is because the shelves are a lot cooler than the door, which is constantly being opened and closed. Milk should also be kept away from strong smelling foods, as it can sometimes pick up on these odours.
Anything cooked is also classed as “ready to eat” so should be stored on the top or second shelf along with the dairy products. Things like ready-made cakes, cooked meat and leftovers all fall into this category.
Generally, these need to be stored on the top or second shelf of the fridge. As these are ready-to-eat products, they need to be kept away from the raw foods to avoid bacteria transferring.
The top shelf of the fridge is a great way to keep these foods separate from others. Dairy products also need to be stored in sealed containers.
Cheese should never be stored in cling film, as this can really dry the product out, making it go off quicker. When storing cheese the best thing to use is cheese or parchment paper.
The bottom trays (also known as the crisper drawers) are best for storing your fruit in. Store them in an organised fashion. Don’t throw them all in together, as some fruits, such as plums, pears, apples and peaches, contain ethylene, which is a chemical that can ripen other fruits and vegetables that are close to it.
Because of the ethylene, it’s best to store fruit in one crisper drawer, and vegetables in the other. Remember to never pile your fragile fruits and veggies on top of one another though, as this can cause bruising. Store them in an organised fashion in these drawers.
As condiments are fairly resistant to spoiling, they can be stored in the doors of the fridge. You can also store things like juice and water in the door.
Eggs can be stored in the fridge – although don’t keep them in the door. Opening and closing the door will make the eggs expire a lot quicker. The best place for them is the main body of the fridge (top or middle shelf would be best).
Both red and white wine can be stored in the cupboard before opened, but after that they must be stored in the fridge. These are fine to be placed in the fridge door, but only keep them for a few days.
Darren Beale from MuscleFood.com said: “We all have a place in the fridge for certain foods – but is it really the right one? Our guide is bound to change the way you do things.
“The one thing you really need to be careful of is cross contaminating raw foods and cooked, ready to eat items. Keeping these foods well sealed and separated in the fridge is the obvious way to do this.
“Another thing you need to be conscious of is food being spoiled. For example, ethylene is emitted from certain fruits and this can cause fruit and vegetables stored next to them to go off. An important point to remember when filling up the fruit and veg tray.”
Steak is one of the most tricky meats to cook well, and now a top chef has revealed you’ve been doing it all wrong.
ANALYSIS:
From connected ovens to smart beds, the burgeoning “internet of random things” (IoRT
) industry is showing no signs of easing. Earlier this week, Ring — funded to the tune of $ 209 million — announced a new version of its connected video doorbell. One day later, Samsung reminded us exactly how bizarre the smart home is becoming, when it announced that the next generation of its Family Hub connected refrigerators are now on sale in the U.S.
While internet-enabled fridges aren’t a new phenomenon, with the likes of LG offering connected coolers as far back as 2000, Samsung has been going all-in to convince everyone that smart fridges should serve as the centerpiece of your connected home.

At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Samsung unveiled the Family Hub fridge, a stainless steel appliance that sports a huge 21.5-inch HD touchscreen display on one of its doors. It was basically a fridge with an Android tablet embedded into it, allowing access to some apps, as well as stats such as the internal temperature of the fridge. It also had sensors to detect and automatically reorder depleted food supplies, while cameras allowed you to peek inside through your smartphone from a faraway place.
Fast forward to 2017, and Samsung gave a glimpse of its upcoming next generation Family Hub fridges at CES in January, and this time around the fridges were even smarter, with a voice-enabled interface and apps allowing you to go hands-free while cooking in the kitchen — a potentially useful feature that allows you to verbalize a recipe request while your hands are covered in culinary goo. You can also ask for information on the time and weather, add products to shopping lists, manage to-do lists, and order groceries — all by chatting with Bixby, Samsung’s virtual voice-controlled assistant.

Put simply, Samsung wants you to have a conversation with your fridge.
But Samsung revealed its true vision for its connected fridge lineup when it announced that the Samsung Connect app, which debuted on the Samsung Galaxy S8 earlier this year, will be coming to the Family Hub fridges later this fall. Samsung Connect, if you didn’t know, is an app designed to help users control all their connected things from a single place. All Samsung smart products can be controlled and monitored through the app, not to mention third-party products such as lights, locks, speakers, and security cameras — including the Ring video doorbell we mentioned earlier.
Yes, Samsung wants the humble fridge to be at the heart of your connected home.
“The kitchen has always been the center of the home, but with technology changing how families connect and communicate, home appliances are emerging as a new focus of innovation,” explained John Herrington, senior vice president and general manager of home appliances at Samsung Electronics America. “The Family Hub is a huge step forward in the modern kitchen. It empowers you to do things you never thought possible — like take the fridge with you to the grocery store, digitally display a photo of your kid’s winning goal, and enjoy your favorite entertainment right from your digital screen.”
Earlier this week at Samsung 837, the tech titan’s NYC-based digital playground for marketing its products to the public, Samsung hosted an event with Smart Kitchen Summit (yup, it really is a thing) to hammer home the notion that the Samsung Family Hub is “more than just a fridge.”
Above: John Herrington, senior vice president and general manager of home appliances at Samsung Electronics America, hosts Samsung Family Hub 2017 Event and Smart Kitchen Summit.
It is true that the kitchen serves as the focal point for many family interactions. It’s a social space where people cook and often eat. People congregate in kitchens at at parties, kids do their homework there, and parents catch up on work emails away from the noisy distractions of the living room, where TV rules the roost.
The concept of ubiquitous computing has been around for decades, and early theories envisioned a future where connected devices are embedded in our environment. People once laughed when suggestions were put forward that one day we may communicate through home appliances as a matter of course. We’re not quite there yet. But Samsung released four Family Hub models in 2016, and is gearing up to launch 10 variants in 2017 — the company is betting its bootlaces that your fridge will one day be the command center for your connected life.
]]>Seventy-nine people are feared dead after the blaze at Grenfell Tower destroyed 151 homes in the Kensington tower block, and the government has now ordered immediate testing of the Hotpoint fridge freezer which was involved.
According to the company one Hotpoint appliance is sold every 19 seconds in Britain – and on average two of every three UK homes have at least one Hotpoint appliance installed.
Whirlpool, owner of Hotpoint, issued a statement today.
“Words cannot express our sorrow at this terrible tragedy. We offer our most profound condolences to the victims, those who have lost love-ones, homes, and possessions, and to their friends and families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved including the emergency services who risked their lives to extinguish the blaze and rescue those in the building.
“We are addressing this as a matter of utmost urgency and assisting the authorities in any way we can.
“We will provide additional updates as out investigations progress.”

Hotpoint FF175BP: What to do if you have the same fridge freezer
Words cannot express our sorrow at this terrible tragedy. We offer our most profound condolences to the victims, those who have lost love-ones, homes, and possessions, and to their friends and families.
What is the make and model of the fridge/freezer involved?
At this point in time the fire is believed to have been sparked by a Hotpoint fridge freezer (model number FF175BP).
During the period March 2006 to July 2009, a total of 64,000 units were manufactured by Indesit under the Hotpoint brand. They believe the actual number of appliances in use today will be lower due to normal product obsolescence, given the time period involved.
These models were discontinued in 2009, several years before Whirlpool acquired Indesit.
Customers can find the model and serial number of their appliances checking a sticker – usually located on a behind the salad container. Or look for the model data label below on your appliance.

Should people with the FF175BP make and model return it to store?
While customers haven’t been told to return them to store yet, those who believe they may have a Hotpoint freezer model number FF175BP or FF175BG should call the Hotpoint freephone hotline on 0800 316 3826 or visit hotpointservice.co.uk/fridgefreezer.
Do customers with Hotpoint products need to worry about a similar incident?
A Hotpoint spokesperson said the company is working with the authorities to obtain access to the appliance so they can assist with the ongoing investigation.
Under these circumstances they’re unable to speculate on further details at this time.
How often should people replace their Hotpoint products?
On it’s website, Hotpoint said it wanted to be able to provide products to customer which last for a lengthier period of time than five years.
Piero Pracchi, Marketing Director for Hotpoint, wrote: “Offering our customers a 10-year Parts Guarantee is reflection of Hotpoint’s pledge to support consumers past the point of sale. We want our customers to know we are with them every step of the way.”
Greg Clark, Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said: “The safety of consumers is paramount. The device is being subject to immediate and rigorous testing to establish the cause of the fire.
“I have made clear to the company that I will expect them to replace any item without delay if it is established that there is a risk in using them.”

Whirlpool tumble dryers
Back in February 2017, Whirlpool encountered a problem with another of its products – a tumble dryer. Customers were told not to use their faulty tumble dryers as part of safety advice. (http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/life/771123/whirlpool-faulty-tumble-dryers)
The faulty Hotpoint, Indent and Creda dryers caused a series of fires over the past year – one of the biggest ripped through an 18-storey high rise building in Shepherds Bush, leaving several families homeless.
Towards the end of last year, it was recommended that those with faulty machines contact Whirlpool to have their machine modified as quickly as possible.
The company insisted the faulty machines – a reported 5.3million – were safe to use so long as they were not left unattended.
But London Fire Brigade also campaigned for people to switch off their machines since the incidents started happening.
Charlie Pugsley, Head of Fire Investigation at London Fire Brigade, said: “We’re feeling a huge relief this morning.
“Where there’s any risk of potential fire from domestic appliances we should not be telling consumers they’re safe to use.”

Back in the days when I had the courage to board a commercial aircraft, I remember a few trans-atlantic trips where I was given a little bumper sticker that could be affixed to the side of my seat. It said, “Wake me for meals.” Wow. Really? Wake me for belching, too. That was during an era when you daily saw bumper stickers that read, “America: Love it or leave it!” At the time, plenty of us wanted to commission our own that read, “America: Love it and fix it.” READ MORE ››

AmazonOut of all the chores on your to-do list, cleaning the refrigerator is one of the easiest to forget.
In fact, you probably won’t realize it’s time to clean your fridge until you start smelling a questionable blend of spoiled milk, balsamic vinegar, and last week’s Chinese takeout.
You should wipe down your fridge’s shelves once a week, but if you still can’t remove that questionable odor from your kitchen, it might be time to call in some reinforcements.
That’s where Moso’s deodorizing bags come in. We’ve already told you that its mini purifying bags can help keep your shoes smelling fresh, but the brand has another version meant for your fridge. Each bag is filled with the company’s signature bamboo charcoal that’s comparable to a sponge — it’s porous enough to let air pass through and trap pungent odors inside.
Moso claims the charcoal it uses can keep your fridge, cooler, or freezer smelling fresh for up to two years.
If you’re short on fridge space, the bag comes with a suction cup, which you can attach to its side instead of taking up valuable shelf space.
No matter how great a product sounds, it’s only worth buying if it delivers on its promise. With over 200 5-star reviews on Amazon and a 4.6/5 rating on the site, Moso’s bags do just that. A lot of the customers who reviewed the bags said they worked better than sticking a box of baking soda in the fridge.
It’s important to keep your fridge clean, and it seems as though Moso’s bags make it easy to keep fridge odors to a minimum.
