The 2019 fall TV season is truly underway, now that every single new broadcast series has made its debut. So, how is this year’s freshman class performing? Even though the newcomers have only aired a handful of episodes — The CW’s Batwoman and Nancy Drew have had just two outings thus far — first impressions are a big deal, and even the strongest comedies and dramas have room for improvement. To that end, the TVLine staff has come up with more than 25 suggestions for how 15 of the fall’s new shows can work out their kinks, while also recognizing what these shows have been doing right during their first few weeks on the air. How can Batwoman fly even higher? Should Perfect Harmony change its tune? Which Almost Family matters need to be addressed? What would make Bob Hearts Abishola more lovable? How can Evil become very good? Scroll through the attached gallery — or click here for direct access — to see all of our suggested improvements for many (though not all) of this fall’s new shows, then hit the comments with your own recommendations!

Duke landed the top three freshman basketball prospects, none of whom should be more exciting to watch than Zion Williamson.
Williamson became an internet phenom in recent years for his highlight dunks in high school in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he showed a rare blend of size, explosiveness, and agility.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Jefferson Pierce’s superhero alter ego, Black Lightning, managed to survive a multi-pronged assault in the CW series’ freshman finale. But is his biggest battle yet to come, from the inside of a briefcase?
It’s the same question his Hall of Fame coach is asking.
“Jaren has done a good job,” Tom Izzo tells OZY, moments after beating Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on March 2. “He’s a shot blocker who can change the game at the four or the five [position].… We just have to keep him in the game because Jaren Jackson is very valuable to this team.”
I know sometimes I won’t be out there long, because I foul somebody or do something stupid.
Jaren Jackson Jr.
Compared with other freshman big men dominating college basketball, Jackson, 18, has flown under the radar. While Arizona’s Deandre Ayton and Duke’s Marvin Bagley III have posted 20-and-11 seasons and play most of the game, Jackson has a much shorter leash, and his stat line — 11.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks in only 22.2 minutes per game — hardly tells the full story. Unlike most college coaches, Izzo has a stacked roster that allows him to sit his future lottery pick, both for rest and reprimand. Between flashes of brilliance, the 6-foot-11 Jackson often finds himself in foul trouble, playing as part of a four-man rotation featuring sophomore Nick Ward, senior Gavin Schilling and freshman (and Jackson’s roommate) Xavier Tillman. Now, following a 12-day layoff before March Madness, Jackson’s versatility — and ability to stay on the floor — will anchor any potential title run. After that, the case could be made that he will be the most well-rounded one-and-done player in the NBA draft. If he decides to go.
“Everybody in the NBA is looking for a ‘unicorn’ prospect,” says Turner NCAA analyst Steve Smith, who also starred at Michigan State before a 14-year NBA career. “Well, [Jackson] can shoot threes, he’s good in the post, and I’ve never seen a young kid with such great timing on defense.… His potential is off the charts.”
A McDonald’s All-American out of Carmel, Indiana, Jackson was the country’s ninth-ranked high school recruit last summer. He combines exceptional defensive instincts with deep shooting range, great mobility and above-average passing — a complete game for which he thanks (at least in part) his father. Jaren Jackson Sr. starred at Georgetown in the late 1980s before playing 13 seasons for nine different NBA teams. In 1999, months before his son was born, Jackson helped the San Antonio Spurs win the franchise’s first NBA title. “He’s my favorite player,” Jaren says of his dad. “He taught me everything I know. I’ve always wanted to be like him.”

But Dad was not the only basketball force in the Jackson household. When Jaren was 13, his mother, Terri Carmichael Jackson, became the director of law, policy and governance at the NCAA. Headquartered in Indianapolis, the gig moved the family to basketball-crazed Indiana and made Terri acutely aware of every NCAA rules violation her son might encounter on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit or the recruiting trail. In a season where pay-for-play corruption has gripped the game’s biggest programs, Terri’s strict rules of operation kept bad actors at bay. “I didn’t even have to try to stay on the straight and narrow because she scared everybody away,” Jackson says with a chuckle. “I was squeaky-clean!”
On March 5, Jackson was named both Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year — the latter convincing most NBA scouts that he’s ready for the next level now. And, in spurts, it’s easy to see Jackson’s full potential. In the early moments of Michigan State’s nail-biting win over Wisconsin, he easily won the tipoff before proceeding to drop-step through the body and soul of Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ. An ensuing blocked shot and assist led to an emphatic flex from the lanky teen, as if Wisconsin needed any more evidence that they were being outgunned by an 18-year-old opponent.

But from there, like so often this season, Jackson got lost in the shuffle. He eventually fouled out with 7 points, three rebounds and just 15 minutes played. In the New York Knicks locker room after the game, between joking with Tillman and heading out to greet his parents, Jackson was surprisingly self-aware. “I know sometimes I won’t be out there long, because I foul somebody or do something stupid,” he said. “But if I can limit mistakes, my productivity will increase because I can do a lot of different things on the court.”
As a No. 3 seed with only four losses on the season, Michigan State is a favorite to make the eighth Final Four trip of Izzo’s tenure. All-American forward Miles Bridges, point guard Cassius Winston and their package of impactful big men make the Spartans a threat whether Jackson plays 15 minutes or 35. But MSU is just 3-4 against top competition and, in their losses — to Duke, Ohio State and Michigan (twice) — they’ve been exposed by teams that spread the floor offensively and can defend the post. If Michigan State wins the title, you can bet Jaren Jackson avoided foul trouble and was highly engaged on both ends of the floor.
“For this team, I’m more of a defensive stopper and spot-up shooter,” Jackson continues. “We have plenty of players that can create offense.… I’ll save that for next year.”
Or maybe, Jaren, try it next week.

Alabama had prepared freshman quarterback Tue Tagovailoa to play in the championship game, and it paid off.
Alabama beat Georgia, 26-23, in the college football championship on Monday after inserting Tagovailoa into the game in the second half. Alabama head coach Nick Saban decided to make a change after a disastrous first half in which Alabama fell behind 13-0 and benched normal starter Jalen Hurts.
After Georgia kicked a field goal to go up 23-20 in overtime, Tagovailoa’s extra period got off to a horrible start when he was sacked on the first snap for a major loss. Undeterred, he then delivered a 41-yard bomb to DeVonta Smith for the win.
Incredible:
Tagovailoa is a true freshman QB, but had actually gotten a good amount of experience during the season, throwing 53 pass attempts for over 400 yards, with eight touchdowns and one interception.
After the game, Tagovailoa said Nick Saban approached him and Hurts at halftime and said they’d be trying something different in the second half after a scoreless first half.
Tagovailoa delivered, leading a touchdown drive on his second drive of the half. Although he threw an interception in the third quarter, the defense saved him by getting it right back on the next possession. Alabama then scored field goals on two of its next three drives before Tagovailoa delivered an equally impressive game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter.
“He just stepped in and did this thing,” Hurts said after the game of Tagovailoa. Throughout the second half of the game, Hurts could be seen cheering his teammate and encouraging him.
“He’s built for stuff like this,” he added.
Going into his sophomore season, Tagovailoa is now a national champion.

CBS’ MacGyver wrapped its freshman run on Friday night with a finale that served up few MacGyverisms yet delivered some dramatic stakes for a character who pulled the trigger on their first kill.
In fact, if you were to ask me the highlight of the hour, I’d point not to any pyrotechnics or vexing villain but to Tristin Mays’ performance, as Riley recoiled from shooting The Client at close range, during a struggle for a gun. It added up to just a few moments, but it was a bit of character work that the show didn’t have to slow down for amid all the mayhem, but it did. And that was nice.
The larger overall schism somehow felt “small” to me, as a locked-up Murdoc (the always-compelling David Dastmalchian) sent a well-tutored prison pal (played by Mark Sheppard, of course) to don a latex mask and infiltrate the Phoenix complex. As the team members initially split up, and with the building’s grid hacked, the idea perhaps was to ask, “What if Jack didn’t have Mac? What if Riley didn’t have computer access?” But I was frankly distracted by Bozer’s plight, seeing as how he got pretty badly stabbed by “Dr. Zito” — a callback to the original series, where he was played by Sheppard’s actual father — yet was never tended to by anything close to a medical expert. And yet after 40 minutes of lying supine, merely clutching his wound, he didn’t pass out (or worse) but instead had the strength to get to his feet and walk down the hall to trigger the sprinklers (and thus melt the baddie’s mask, which you knew was going to be stolen the minute Bozer showed it off/mentioned its one liability. #ChekhovsProsthetic).
While separated from Mac, “JackGyver” got to jerry-rig his own fertilizer bomb. Once the gents were reunited and struggling to get to the level below (this place has nine basements?), Mac did a cool hack which blew a shortcut through the floor, though his and Jack’s simultaneous “rappelling” into the freshly created chasm was a bit too tidy. At the end of the day, if you happen to watch both Scorpion and MacGyver, you may find yourself asking, “How much ‘Oh, come on!’ can I accept from CBS every week?”
Mac & Co. of course emerged largely unscathed (save for Bozer’s belly and Riley’s psyche), while a final twist suggested that Murdoc is poised to escape his supermax holding pen using no more than a page ripped from a confiscated book. Oh, and the cold open allowed a glimpse at some of the infamous Cairo mission, which apparently went so sideways the boys take that day off work each year — though not this time.
I never really paid much mind to the original MacGyver, so don’t have that to hold up for comparison/any great reverence. I watch this one probably every third episode — not quite as regularly as its lead-out Hawaii Five-0. I find the five-person cast a bit claustrophobic, and I’m on record as not being a fan of new boss Matty Webber (despite the similarities of our names!), who to date has barely offset her barking of orders and intolerance for tomfoolery with any warm-ish or semi-playful moments (or even any spycraft brilliance). I have, though, come around on Bozer since my original review, and the sweetness between him and Riley always plays well.
I’ll check back in during Season 2, maybe as often as I did this go-round, but what about you? And what tweaks would you hope to see?

]]>Nearing the end of a season filled with story lines befitting a One Tree Hill direct-to-DVD sequel, Duke is still searching for its optimum speed. The Blue Devils’ season can be broken into ups and downs, corresponding with the absence and emergence of Tatum. When the dust settles, this season’s narrative will center around the future NBA lottery pick. As a high school senior last year, Tatum was a consensus five-star recruit, third-ranked player in the nation and the second Duke recruit (after Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker) to be named Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. At 6-foot-8, Tatum, the St. Louis-born son of a basketball coach was a two-time gold medal winner with USA Basketball, and any scout’s dream candidate.

According to ESPN basketball analyst and scout Fran Fraschilla, folks aren’t wrong to infer that Tatum could be the NBA’s next star. “I watched Jayson quite a bit in high school,” Fraschilla tells OZY. “He’s an elite athlete who is excellent in transition. And he has a great ability to score in the mid-range.” If all goes well, he could follow the footsteps of another small forward who led his team to a title and then bounced to the NBA, Carmelo Anthony.
At the start of the year, Duke looked like a smart championship pick. Tatum was fresh, and All-American point guard Grayson Allen had spurned first-round NBA draft projections to return for his junior season. Seniors Matt Jones and Amile Jefferson would be the veteran backbone. But then, three of Duke’s top four freshmen — Tatum, and centers Harry Giles and Marques Bolden — began the season injured. Tatum suffered a sprained foot during Duke’s October 25 pro day, when NBA scouts visit practice.
When he finally debuted against Maine on December 3, Duke held a7–1 record, the only blemish a two-point loss to top-ranked Kansas. Tatum scored 10 points and snatched eight rebounds in the first half. The next game, against 12th-ranked Florida, Tatum scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half. “Jayson had one of those stretches,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told OZY after the game. “A few minutes that separate outstanding players from everyone else.”
Yet Tatum’s dream team may not churn out the happy ending—drama has threatened to tank even their supreme levels of talent. Allen’s statistics have fallen off in every meaningful category, as he’s failed to find a groove sharing the ball with Tatum or Luke Kennard, the 6-foot-6 sophomore guard and national player of the year candidate. Allen’s also continued his history of tripping opponents and had a sideline meltdown, leading to intense criticism and a one-game suspension. And super freshman point guard Frank Jackson, the only healthy rookie entering the season and a potential NBA first-rounder, has struggled to adjust to his role as distributor, occasionally curbing opportunities for Kennard and Tatum to find an offensive rhythm.
But sometimes, Tatum’s power can almost stand alone. On February 15, he hit a career-high 28 points against Virginia, single-handedly propelling Duke to victory against the nation’s top defense. Duke has now won 10 of its last 13 games and will seek revenge against North Carolina in the ACC semifinals on Friday night. A win would lock up a top seed in next week’s NCAA Tournament.
: “The ending was like 2 years ago here for us. A freshman came up big. Tyus then. Jayson was huge tonight.”
— Duke Basketball (@DukeMBB) February 16, 2017
After the Virginia game,Coach K tweeted a reference to Tyus Jones, current Minnesota Timberwolves point guard and hero of Duke’s most recent championship in 2015. Tatum is no point guard, but, like Jones, he is a freshman gaining confidence at the right time. With the prototypical skill set of an NBA small forward, Tatum can take over a college game by manhandling smaller, weaker defenders in the post and out-crafting bigger foes in the mid-range and on the perimeter. He’s not the fastest but he’s crafty, and can use his size and shooting touch to cash in sneakily when provided even an inch of space. Plus, he’s got a knack for the big shot.
No matter the postseason outcome, Tatum is a lock to be picked within the top 15 of the upcoming NBA draft. He averages 16.1 points per game, 7.4 rebounds and holds a 36 percent shooting mark from 3-point range; he’s the second-ranked player at his position, behind Kansas’ Josh Jackson.
Oddly though, as Fraschilla notes, with Kennard, Allen and Jackson all battling for ball possession on the perimeter, the Blue Devils might need Tatum to play the “big man in a ‘small ball’ lineup.” Tatum’s versatility down low would provide the guards more room to work outside and match Tatum with a taller, slow-footed defender, a contrast that will see him working around the basket but also allow him to outrun tired defenders for 3-point daggers.
Either that, or just get the hell out of his way. Duke has only a few more weeks with a future superstar. It’s time to ride him to the title.
