F1 is targeting net zero carbon emissions by the end of the decade and engine makers have been testing sustainable fuels over the last few years. F1 leaders are aiming to only use sustainable fuels in F1 cars by 2026. Race cars are only a small piece of the puzzle, though. Holding two dozen grands prix around the world requires shifting cars, parts and other materials between circuits, which generate more carbon emissions.

The Mercedes-AMG F1 team, however, has experimented with a way to reduce freight emissions. It used hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO 100) biofuel in 16 trucks as it moved operations between Spa, Zandvoort and Monza for the final three European grands prix of the season. Since those circuits are relatively close to each other, Mercedes didn't need to rely on, say, air freight to ship cars and components. That gave the team a good opportunity to test the biofuel, given a total driving distance of around 1,400 kilometers (870 miles). However, the team noted it needed to use diesel fuel for the last 20km (just over 12 miles) due to supply issues.

An analysis found that using HVO 100 reduced freight emissions by 89 percent. Overall, Mercedes saved 44,091kg (97,204 pounds) of carbon dioxide emissions, compared with solely using diesel for both journeys. It noted HVO 100 is derived from vegetable oils, waste oils and fats and that it's entirely free of fossil fuels. The fuel also produces less Nox and particulate emissions.

“Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. Trialing the use of biofuels for our land freight is another example of our commitment to embed sustainability in every decision we make and action we take," Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff said. "We aim to be on the cutting edge of change and hope we can make the adoption of sustainable technology possible as we are all in the race towards a sustainable tomorrow.”

Other biofuels are being tested for use in Formula 1. Teams started using E10 biofuels (which contain 10 percent renewable ethanol) in F1 cars this season as part of the transition to fully sustainable fuels. While that's some distance away from employing fully sustainable fuels, the use of E10 and HVO 100 are positive steps toward making motorsport much healthier for the environment.

    A rail cargo transport route is expected to be officially developed between Russia and Japan, according to the Japan News. It will become the “third distribution channel” for the two countries, after sea and air routes.

    Cargo will be transported via the 9,289 kilometer-long (5,772 miles) Trans-Siberian Railway. The longest railway line in the world connects Moscow with the Russian Far East with a travel time of seven days. The Trans-Siberian railway was built between 1891 and 1916, and spans a record eight time zones.

    According to the paper’s sources, the testing of the Trans-Siberian Railway may begin in the run-up to the fourth Eastern Economic Forum (September 11-13) in Russia’s Vladivostok. Up to 10 companies – mainly Japanese distribution firms – are considering participating in the test. They will study factors such as the cost and duration of transportation, administrative procedures needed for customs, and import and export processes.

    Current freight transport between Japan and Russia mainly uses sea and air routes. It takes between 53 and 62 days to transport freight from Japan to Moscow using a sea route that crosses the Indian Ocean. According to Japan’s Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, with the new route transportation will be reduced to 20-27 days. The costs could also be reduced by up to 40 percent.

    Statistics from the Japanese Finance Ministry showed that in 2017 the country’s total export volume to Russia was worth about 673.7 billion yen ($ 6 billion), with automobiles accounting for about 44 percent and auto parts for about 12 percent of exports.

    The sides hope that improved efficiency will lead to more exports of auto parts and other industrial products. It’s technically possible to transport crude oil and natural gas by rail as well, the sources said.

    There are also plans to expand the route to Europe via Moscow. If realized, the Trans-Siberian Railway could become a major trade route between Japan and Europe. “If economic ties between Japan and Russia are reinforced through an invigoration of transport links, we can expect a positive impact on resolving the northern territories issue,” a Japanese government source was quoted as saying.

    At least two people died and 116 others were injured when a passenger train collided with a freight rail service in South Carolina, US.

    The Amtrak and CSX services crashed at 2.35 a.m. local time (7.35 a.m. GMT) near the city of Columbia. The Amtrak passenger train was travelling between New York and Miami when it hit the stationary CSX train.

    More than 100 reindeer were killed by freight trains in Norway within four days in what locals are calling “a psychological nightmare”.

    The deer in the north of the country fell victim to the trains while undertaking their winter migration from mountainous regions towards the coast. A single train mowed down 65 of the animals on Saturday while a further 41 were killed between Wednesday and Friday.

    “I’m so angry that I’m dizzy,” reindeer herder Ole Henrik Kappfjell,told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. “It’s a senseless animal tragedy…a psychological nightmare.”

    Documentary filmmaker Jon Erling Utsi captured photos showing the reindeer’s grisly end. “It was a nightmare to watch,” Utsi said to the state broadcaster. “The worst thing was the animals that were not killed in the accident, they were lying there, suffering, it was a bloodbath over several kilometers.”

    The warnings for trains to drive slowly didn’t activate due to “a technical failure.” A spokesperson for Bane NOR, the train company, says the provider tried to warn the driver when they discovered that the message was not appearing on the railway signage.

    “When it was discovered that the message had disappeared, they tried to call the train… Unfortunately, it was too late.”

    Herders are calling for barriers to be built along the track to protect the animals, however, the plan has yet to receive any funding.

    Norway is home to approximately 250,000 reindeer. At least 250 of them were plowed down by trains over the last year and more than 2,000 were killed along the same railway line between 2013 and 2016.

    Trucks hauling freight from ports emit a lot of greenhouse gases—in fact, freight is the number one source of smog-related emissions in the Los Angeles area—and projected US growth rates mean that by mid-century, those emissions could double unless something is done to control them. Daimler, Cummins, Tesla, and others have promised various models of electric freight-hauling trucks, but none of those models are quite yet ready for prime time (with the exception of Daimler’s trucks, which are only meant for smaller, shorter hauls).

    But the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) office in Los Angeles, not keen on waiting for a private company to perfect an electric vehicle solution, has reached out to Siemens to help it build a test “eHighway” in Carson, California, near the Port of Long Beach, the second-busiest seaport in the United States. The eHighway uses electrified catenary lines along a stretch of road that trucks can connect to for electric power—exactly like trolley or light rail lines that offer electric public transportation in a multitude of cities today. The difference, however, is that the trucks don’t run on a rail, and they can disconnect from the catenary and run on independent engines when they get to the end of the line.

    On Monday, General Motors gave us a quick look at a new fuel cell EV platform it’s developing, called SURUS. It stands for Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure, and it’s a large driverless vehicle—about the size of a shipping container—that GM thinks could work in a range of applications, including mobile and emergency power generation, cargo delivery, and even military use. We weren’t allowed to take any photos of it, but on Friday GM made it public.

    SURUS is powered by GM’s latest hydrogen fuel cell system. The company has been working with Honda since 2013 on the technology, and it plans to commercialize it within the next five years, targeting commercial and military buyers. “SURUS redefines fuel cell electric technology for both highway and off-road environments,” said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM Global Fuel Cell Business. “General Motors is committed to bringing new high-performance, zero-emission systems to solve complex challenges for a variety of customers.”
