American midterm elections are normally sleepy affairs, but 2018’s hyper-partisan atmosphere has voters turning out in record numbers. Polling places were unprepared for the onslaught and machines broke down all over the country.
In New York City, broken and jammed machines thwarted thousands of voters from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side and the Bronx, leaving voters lined up waiting in the rain – where they made matters worse by getting the ballots wet, according to Board of Elections rep Michael Ryan. Poll watchers were shocked at the dysfunction and NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson demanded Ryan’s resignation, calling the mess “unacceptable and unfair to voters.”
Every election is like Groundhog Day: long lines, polling site issues, huge problems. Now we’re blaming the weather? It’s unacceptable & unfair to voters. Michael Ryan should resign & we should begin a top to bottom review of how this happened. It’s time for new leadership at BOE https://t.co/nxl5swtCeb
— Corey Johnson (@CoreyinNYC) November 6, 2018
This is not the first election New York has flubbed. Thousands of names went missing from voter rolls during the 2016 primaries, a phenomenon which was repeated to a lesser extent during this year’s primaries.
North Carolina voters had their own issues, with machines failing to read the new, larger ballots. Wake County Board of Elections Director Gary Sims blamed the humidity and instructed frustrated voters to place their ballots in “emergency bins,” where they would be counted later.
The lines were just as long in Georgia, where voters in downtown Atlanta had to wait for hours to cast their ballots after the county delivered just three voting machines. Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson actually visited the precinct in an effort to keep people’s spirits up and encourage them not to leave.
Some voters in New Jersey showed up at the polls only to be turned away because of a new law regarding mail-in ballots. Residents who had previously voted by mail were told they had to opt out before they could return to voting in person.
In South Carolina, voters claimed machines were flipping their votes to parties they did not want to select, sometimes more than once. Richland County Elections Director Rokey Suleman blamed a “calibration issue.” Other officials said the vote-flipping was only the start of their problems – some machines wouldn’t even plug in.
Texas voters had a similar experience last week. Voting machines reverted to Republican Ted Cruz when people attempted to vote for Democrat Beto O’Rourke, or to no candidate at all when they tried to vote for Cruz. Around the same time, the Georgia NAACP claimed they were experiencing similar issues with their gubernatorial candidates.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Paris “condemns this murder in the strongest terms.” He noted that while Riyadh’s Friday night admission of the journalist’s death is the “first step toward the establishment of truth,” many questions still remain.
“The information available about events in the Istanbul consulate is inadequate,” said a joint statement of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas. They expect transparency and more answers from Riyadh about the circumstances surrounding the suspicious death, widely painted in media reports as a gruesome murder.
Maas stated separately that Berlin should not approve arms sales to Saudi Arabia until investigations into Khashoggi’s death are completed.
“So long as investigations are underway, so long as we don’t know what happened there, there is no reason to take positive decisions on arms exports to Saudi Arabia,” he told German public television’s Tagesthemen program.
The remarks from Europe came after Riyadh finally stated on Saturday, ending two weeks of denials, that Khashoggi was killed in a “fistfight” that occurred at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, while providing no evidence. Authorities also announced the detention of 18 suspects in the case.
But while Europe remains skeptical and insistent on clear answers, US President Donald Trump seemed mostly satisfied with Riyadh’s confession on Saturday, once again calling the kingdom a “great ally.” He did admit, however, that “some questions” remain and that he will be working with Congress on how to proceed to address the issue.
Trump has repeatedly stated that the US hopes to keep its $ 450 billion arms deal with Riyadh, citing the money and jobs it is bringing to the US. He said on Friday that it would be “very hurtful” to the US if it was dropped, and previously said there were other ways of “punishing” Saudi Arabia if it were found to be behind Khashoggi’s death.
Khashoggi was last seen on October 2 when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents for his forthcoming marriage. Turkey was quick to state that it had evidence that he was murdered inside the building, though Riyadh had adamantly denied that claim until Saturday. The case prompted a global backlash against Saudi Arabia, from governments to media organizations and business figures including Richard Branson and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

Tencent hasn’t been having a great time ever since China established a new regulator that brought game approvals to a standstill. Back in August, it had to pull Monster Hunter: World from the Chinese market after regulators cancelled its license. Now, the internet giant has announced that it’s restructuring the company for the first time in six years due to challenges caused by tighter government regulations. In addition to bringing MH:World to China, Tencent owns the companies behind League of Legends and Clash of Clans, which are immensely popular mobile games in Asia. It also owns the social media and chat platform WeChat.
According to Reuters, the company’s market value has plummeted in the past months, as investors worry about the regulatory roadblocks it’s facing and its lack of clear overseas strategy. Back in August, Bloomberg reported that it lost over $ 160 billion in value since January this year, and considering its shares fell further just last week, that number most likely grew over the past couple of months.
Going forward, Tencent will implement changes focusing on its corporate offerings. It will consolidate three business groups into a single unit and will create a new one for the cloud and smart industries in order to improve its cloud-based services for corporate clients. It will also “further explore the integration of social, content and technology that is more suitable for future trends, and promote the upgrade from consumer internet to industrial internet.” In addition, it’s investing more money into research and development to make sure the company survives this ordeal.

President Donald Trump has authorized the US State Department, in conjunction with the United States Agency for International Development, to release $ 6.6 million for the “vital, life-saving operations” of the so-called Syrian Civil Defense group, known colloquially as the White Helmets, and for the UN’s International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM), a UN agency that is investigating war crimes committed during the conflict.
A statement released by State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert claimed that the White Helmets had saved more than 100,000 lives since the conflict in Syria began. The generous praise may even surprise the White Helmets – by their own estimates, they’ve only rescued some 70,000 people.
“Despicable. More money to the propagandists of the White Helmets, who so many Aleppo and Ghouta civilians say worked with or were terrorists of al-Qaeda, Jaysh al-Islam,” Eva Bartlett, an independent journalist who has made multiple trips to Syria, tweeted in response to the news.
The controversial group – which operates exclusively in militant-held areas of Syria, and whose members have been photographed and filmed fraternizing with jihadists – reportedly had its US government funding cut off in March. A CBS report claimed last month that $ 200 million used to fund the group, as well as other programs in Syria, were “under active review” and that the White Helmets hadn’t received US payments in weeks.

In contrast to their American allies, the British government vowed in May to keep money flowing to the White Helmets. UK Prime Minister Theresa May pledged last month to review the current financial package for the group, hinting at further funding down the track.
“We do support them, we will continue to support them, and… [we] will be looking at the level of that support in the future,” May said, during Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons.
A Freedom of Information Act request revealed that, as of March 2018, the UK government has funded the White Helmets to the tune of £38,425,591.23 (approximately $ 51,148,535).
The group has enjoyed celebrity status in the West, with a documentary praising it even winning an Oscar award. But the western-funded organization has run into hard times lately, both with funding and bad publicity. Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters recently lambasted the White Helmets at a concert in Barcelona, calling the group a “fake organization that exists only to create propaganda for jihadists and terrorists.” His remark came after emails emerged showing that the White Helmets tried to lobby Waters with Saudi money.

WASHINGTON — Major automakers are telling the Trump administration they want to reach an agreement with California to avoid a legal battle over fuel efficiency standards, and they support continued increases in mileage standards through 2025.
“We support standards that increase year over year that also are consistent with marketplace realities,” Mitch Bainwol, chief executive of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a trade group representing major automakers, will tell a U.S. House of Representatives panel on Tuesday, according to written testimony released on Monday.
The Trump administration is weighing how to revise fuel economy standards through at least the 2025 model year, and one option is to propose freezing the standards through 2026, effectively allowing automakers to delay investments in technology to cut greenhouse gas emissions from burning petroleum.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not formally submitted its joint proposal with the Environmental Protection Agency to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review. Even so, last week, California and 16 other states sued to challenge the Trump administration’s decision to revise U.S. vehicle rules.
Auto industry executives have held meetings with the Trump administration for months and have urged the administration to try to reach a deal with California even as they support slowing the pace of reduction in carbon dioxide emissions that the Obama administration rules outlined.
One automaker official said part of the message to President Donald Trump at a meeting on Friday will be to consider California like a foreign trade deal that needs to be renegotiated. Automakers want to urge him to get automakers a “better deal” — as opposed to potentially years of litigation between major states and federal regulators.
On Friday, Trump is set to meet with the chief executives of General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler and the top U.S. executives of at least five other major automakers, including Toyota, Volkswagen AG and Daimler AG, to talk about revisions to the vehicle rules. Senior EPA and Transportation Department officials will also attend.
Environmental groups are eager to keep the rules in place, saying they will save consumers billions in fuel costs. A coalition of groups plans to stage a protest outside Ford’s headquarters in Michigan.
The Obama administration’s rules, negotiated with automakers in 2011, were aimed at doubling average fleetwide fuel efficiency to about 50 miles (80 km) per gallon by 2025. At the time, the federal goverment, California and the states that follow its standards, and the automakers were all on the same page.
Heidi King, the Trump administration’s nominee to head NHTSA, which oversees Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules, is set to have a confirmation hearing on May 16 before the Senate Commerce Committee.

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is likely to propose freezing fuel economy standards from 2020 through 2026, according to three people briefed on the matter, a move likely to spark a fight with California and other states backing tougher vehicle emissions rules.
The administration is circulating a draft proposal that would include freezing requirements after 2020 as the preferred alternative, but will include a series of other alternatives, the sources said. The formal proposal is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks and has not been finalized. The Los Angeles Times first reported the plan earlier Friday.
The lengthy draft proposal is also expected to assert that a 1975 federal law preempts states from imposing emissions rules, but the administration is not expected to immediately propose revoking California’s waiver under the Clean Air Act to set its own rules.
Automakers want changes to address lower gasoline prices and a shift in U.S. consumer preferences to larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles. They want revisions to the Obama standards to make it easier and less costly to meet targets, which vary depending on the size of vehicles and whether they are classified as cars or trucks.
The Obama administration’s rules, negotiated with automakers in 2011, were aimed at doubling average fleet-wide fuel efficiency to about 50 miles per gallon by 2025.
The U.S. Transportation Department and EPA did not immediately comment on Friday, but EPA said earlier this month it had determined the fuel rules through 2025 were not appropriate and would propose revisions.
Stanley Young, spokesman for the California Air Resources Board said: “If enacted, this would harm people’s health, boost greenhouse gas pollution and force drivers to pay more money at the pump for years. It would also severely disrupt the U.S. auto industry, compromising its ability to succeed in a highly competitive global market that increasingly values innovative and efficient technologies.”
Earlier this week, two auto trade groups met with White House officials, including Christopher Liddell, a White House deputy chief of staff, to discuss the issue, a Trump administration official confirmed.
Automakers, including General Motors CEO Mary Barra and Toyota, have repeatedly urged the Trump administration to try to reach agreement with California to maintain a national program.
California Air Resources Board chief Mary Nichols told Reuters earlier this month the state was willing to make changes in the requirements to help automakers comply.
A group of 12 state attorneys general has threatened to sue if the Trump administration reverses the Obama-era rules.
On Friday, nearly two dozen Democratic U.S. senators said they would oppose any effort by the Trump administration to rescind California’s authority to set state vehicle emissions rules, according to a letter reviewed by Reuters.

Carol Kirkwood told BBC Breakfast viewers that today would be breezy, with some outbreaks of rain and frost.
“This morning for many of us it’s a cold start, it’s a frosty one and a dry one, there’s even some sunshine around,” she said.
“But as we head through the day the cloud is going to build and it is going to turn more showery. In between the showers, of course, there’ll be some sunshine.”
Easter weekend is going to be wet at times and rather cold, with the potential for snow on northern hills in Scotland.
For this time of the year, the temperatures are incredibly disappointing with the coldest conditions in the north of the country.
Widespread frost is expected in the far north east of Scotland and the south west of England and Wales this morning.
Rain will move towards the north of Wales and into the Midlands, the south east of England and East Anglia by the afternoon.
Meanwhile, there could be one or two outbreaks of rain in Northern Ireland and northern England, although it should be dry.
The cool weather is likely to remain in the north east of Scotland, but the south west of Scotland should be milder.
Overnight, the wet weather in the south of the country will continue to work its way northwards, but this will raise the temperature in some parts of the UK.
As a result, Good Friday won’t be as cold as today, although, rain will batter the far south west by the end of the night.
An area of low pressure is to blame for the poor weather conditions as these weather systems are being pushed northwards.
On Friday there will be some grey clouds in Scotland and Northern Ireland, meanwhile, in northern England, there could be a few showers, but not much wet weather.
The wetter weather is going to be in the south west, before it moves on to Wales, the Midlands and the south east of England.
However, there could be some sunshine across southern counties, although the brightest weather will be in western areas.
Over the Easter weekend, it should be drier across Wales, the Midlands and southern England, but there could still be some thick clouds.
A bit more snow will fall along the mountains of Scotland. Temperatures in northern Scotland are unlikely to reach above six degrees.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
Boiler and central heating systems can often play up in cold weather, and this is due to the effect the falling temperature has on your pipes.
However, you can easily prevent problems before they even happen with a simple, cheap heating solution: pipe lagging.
Pipe lagging is a type of insulation which can be purchased for as little as £5.10 for a roll, with prices increasing for larger quantities.
The useful video above explains how you might be able to apply this lagging to your pipes yourself, without the need to call out an expert.
Pipes in the loft, in garages or on the outside of the home are the most necessary to apply lagging to.
Pipes in an airing cupboard, or under sinks should also be fitted with lagging to avoid future damage.
Lengths should be cut at an angle in order to join up together at the joints of the pipes, ensuring there is no gap for cold air to get in.
Once fixed around the pipes, lagging can be fixed with tape to ensure it stays in place and does its job properly.
Pipe insulation has a number of benefits. For a start, it can prevent heat loss from pipes and therefore make your heating more efficient, reducing the cost you pay overall.
Furthermore, protecting your pipes with lagging could end up preventing your pipes from freezing and getting damaged – which would cost you a hefty sum to fix.
Lastly, a lesser known benefit of installing lagging around your pipes is for noise reduction from your central heating system.
Hot water can make a banging noise when it passes through a pipe, due to the temperature difference between the inner and outer tubes.
Is it cheaper to leave central heating on all the time or to turn it on and off? The matter is a popular debate.
As temperatures drop, many of us are considering the best way to keep our homes warm.
Sadly for some, Caitlin Bent – an energy expert at the Energy Saving Trust (EST), isn’t buying the “keep it on” philosophy.
“It’s a common myth that leaving the heating on low all day will help you save energy,” she told The Sun.
”In reality, it’s best to use a timer or programmer to make sure your home is only heated when you’re there.
