  • General Electric announced on Monday that it’s cutting its quarterly dividend distribution in half.
  • The decision comes at a time when equity investors are rewarding companies that are reinvesting in their own businesses, relative to those that pay dividends and repurchase stock.

On the surface, General Electric‘s decision to slash its quarterly dividend in half would seem to be a move that would alienate shareholders. But the opposite might actually be true.

Investors have made it known over the past two years that they prefer companies that reinvest in their own core businesses, rather than spend excess capital on dividend payments and share buybacks.

From the start of 2016 through October 2017, a Goldman Sachs-curated basket of stocks spending the most on capex and research and development beat a similarly constructed index of companies offering high dividends and buybacks by a whopping 21 percentage points, according to the firm’s data. And that outperformance has totaled 11 percentage points in 2017 alone.

That shifting preference would seem to align with GE’s decision to revamp operations and undergo a full corporate turnaround — one that will likely involve a great deal of internal investment.

And wouldn’t you know it, traders are already rewarding GE, pushing its stock higher by as much as 1.6% in pre-market trading on Monday. Any further stock gains catalyzed by the dividend decision would be welcome news to GE investors, who have already seen shares slump 35% in 2017.

While GE’s dividend cut was largely expected, it’s still notable considering the company’s status as one of the biggest dividend payers in the US, distributing roughly $ 8 billion to shareholders on an annual basis.

It’s also worth noting that the company might be preemptively adjusting for higher interest rates going forward. When benchmark lending rates rise, that makes the yield offered by dividend payers less attractive. At present time, some Wall Street banks expect three Federal Reserve rate hikes by the end of 2018.

Sears’ shares enjoyed a strong surge this week, soaring as much as 20% on Thursday after the company reported its first net profit in two years. 

But traders’ cheer quickly wore off and shares dipped again, as the grim reality behind the initially rosy headlines set in: Sears’ operational decline is in fact accelerating, and its odds of survival beyond 2017 remain uncertain, according to Evercore ISI analyst Greg Melich.

A closer look at Sears’ earnings show that the company’s sale of its Craftsman brand in March is responsible for its net income of $ 244 million in the first quarter. Excluding the sale, Sears’ losses deepened to $ 230 million from $ 199 million the prior year.

“Operating losses… show no sign of improvement” and “sales remain in a state of free-fall decline,” Melich wrote in a research note. 

Sears’ sales overall tumbled more than 20% to $ 4.3 billion in the first quarter, which the company blamed on store closures and declining sales at its stores open at least a year. Same-store sales plunged 12.4% at Sears stores and 11.2% at Kmart stores.

The company has announced more than 180 store closures so far this year and recently told investors that it has bids for $ 700 million in real estate sales, which would provide much-needed cash to help keep it afloat.

Assuming those sales occur and Sears can achieves success with its cost-cutting plan, “it should have sufficient liquidity to make it through holiday, although the cash burn and rate of sales decline are very concerning,” Melich wrote. 

But the company is still a very sick patient with little evidence of any sustainable forms of cash flow going forward, according to his note. 

“Improving the cash burn rate is imperative as the company shrinks, and Sears remain very far from sustainable levels of loss that does not require external liquidity,” Melich wrote. “Given the very weak store base, continued comp declines, anemic sales productivity, and continued share loss in most major categories, Sears does not appear well positioned for the rest of 2017.”

Moody’s vice president and senior analyst Christina Boni last month delivered a similar assessment on Sears’ survival, saying the real estate sales will help the company survive a little longer, but at the same time diminishes the company’s lifeline as it struggles turn business around.

“Sears’ financial performance remains extremely weak,” Boni said. “Its effort to sell real estate which has produced over $ 700 million of bids currently will enhance liquidity, but accelerates the timeline required to stem operating losses as it asset base diminishes.” 

Sears CEO Eddie Lampert addressed bankruptcy concerns recently and said the company has “as much time as our vendors and our lenders and our shareholders are willing to give us.”

“The reality needs to be better than it is for us to really demonstrate to people that the transition is starting to take hold,” he said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune.

ARSENAL fell to its fourth loss in five Premier League games when West Bromwich Albion beat Arsene Wenger’s side 3-1 to further jeopardize its chances of Champions League qualification.

“We are sorry to the fans because that’s not acceptable for Arsenal Football Club to lose the way we did,” Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain said.

Arsenal’s downfall once again was its porous defense with Craig Dawson heading in twice from corners on another day of protests against Wenger.

“We knew who their danger-men were and we failed to stop them which is really disappointing,” Oxlade-Chamberlain said. “We will look at that and review what went wrong.”

In the skies above the Hawthorns, a plane trailing a banner reading “No contract Wenger out” appeared during the game.

Inside the stadium, “Enough is enough time to go” posters were also held aloft by fans who want the Frenchman to leave at the end of the season after 21 years in charge.

In the last month, Arsenal has been eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich and only won two games – both against fifth-tier teams in the FA Cup. Arsenal is further than ever from winning the Premier League title for the first time since 2004 and is five points adrift from the fourth Champions League place.

“We have to keep fighting because it’s not been pretty for us recently,” Oxlade- Chamberlain said, “and I’m sure it’s not going to get any easier anytime soon.”

Arsenal fell behind in the 12th minute in central England when Dawson rose above Laurent Koscielny to glance in his first header from Nacer Chadli’s corner. Although Alexis Sanchez equalized inside three minutes after a 19-pass move, West Brom regained the lead in the 55th when substitute Hal Robson-Kanu scored with only his second touch of the game.

The Arsenal defense was at fault again when substitute David Ospina, who replaced injured goalkeeper Petr Cech, came to collect a cross and clattered into Hector Bellerin. The ball fell to Robson-Kanu to prod into the net. The crossbar prevented Arsenal leveling again through Danny Welbeck’s header before the unmarked Dawson sealed the win in the 75th minute with his third goal in four games. West Brom has scored from 18 set pieces this season – more than any other Premier League team.

“Their deliveries are absolutely fantastic and their movement is good,” Wenger told broadcaster Sky Sports. “We were guilty especially on the second goal but they score against anybody from set pieces.” There was no coming back for Arsenal and Wenger was subjected to chants of “You don’t know what you’re doing” when Sanchez was replaced by Alex Iwobi. “I decided to take him off and his ankle doesn’t look good,” Wenger said.

While Arsenal’s misery was compounded, eighth-placed West Brom moved to 43 points to maintain its bid for Europa League qualification that could be secured by finishing seventh.
