Manhattan landlords seem to be running out of tricks. 

They’re aggressively offering a month of free rent and other concessions to get new tenants. And yet, in March, Manhattan’s median rent including such discounts fell year-on-year by the most in six and a half years, according to a monthly report released Thursday by Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Blizzard is keeping up its habit of marking the anniversaries of major games. The original StarCraft is turning 20 on March 31st, and the studio is promising a slew of extras across its games to mark the occasion, including the classic real-time strategy title itself. You can log in to StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft II after March 6th to get commemorative interface skins, plus portraits and decals if you sign into SCII by April 6th. And if you’re not particularly big on those titles, there are plenty of other ways to obtain perks — you might even prefer them to the ones you get with StarCraft proper.

Overwatch players will have access to a special Sarah Kerrigan Ghost skin for Widowmaker (see above) between March 6th and April 3rd, for starters. You can also get a Battlecruiser-themed pet in Diablo III (from March 6th onward), one of several StarCraft-themed pets in World of Warcraft (March 31st to April 6th), anniversary portraits in Heroes of the Storm (March 27th through April 7th) and play a StarCraft-inspired Tavern Brawl (March 21st to March 25th).

You can also expect anniversary Twitch streams on March 30th and 31st. The 31st will also see Blizzard release StarCraft is Life: A Celebration, a short YouTube film touching on the memories of the game’s “biggest fans.”

The first StarCraft game seems positively ancient at this point (it was released when Windows gaming and internet multiplayer were relatively young), but its influence on the game industry can be felt to this day. It’s not just that was a definitive game in the genre, with a memorable story and a significant expansion of the formula first seen in early Warcraft games. In many ways, StarCraft was the title that set eSports in motion — it became a phenomenon in South Korea, with sponsorships and live broadcasts well before Twitch streaming took off. Even if you’ve never once dealt with a Zerg rush, there’s probably a game you play that owes a debt to what Blizzard achieved in 1998.

Fortnite Battle Royale is proving very popular with fans on PC, Xbox One and PS4.

And this is what led in part to the game becoming unplayable over various days last week.

This included problems with the game’s new update, as well as a surge of new players knocking the servers offline.

Now Epic Games have confirmed that they will be making up for some of these problems with new in-game freebies.

“We told you we appreciate your patience with some of the issues we’ve had after releasing V.2.3.0, and we meant it,” a message from the Fortnite support team explains.

“In recognition of that patience, we are going to be providing some goodies to both StW and BR players.”

For Battle Royale players 20 Battle Stars will be added toward their Battle Pass progression, while Save the World player will also get 1600 Seasonal Gold you can use in the Event Store.

These new freebies haven’t gone live yet, as Epic have decided to release them sometime after Fortnite’s next update.

Patch V.2.4.0 doesn’t have a solid release time as of yet, but it’s expected to be launched quite soon.

Epic also took the chance to give a big update on the game’s Save The World mode, which is currently paid-for content.

With the company’s other title Paragon closing down shop this year, Epic moved to make sure everyone knew that the same was happening with Save The World.

“You may have read of our recent decision to stop development on Paragon,” a new Epic statement reads. 

“We want to assure you this is not the case for the Fortnite Save the World campaign. 

“Rather, this decision allows us to build more features and bring you more content at a faster pace.”

Fortnite will be free-to-play at some point in 2018, meaning that its progressing will make a lot of sense to Epic, moving forward.

A new limited-time mode has been released this week, which will be of some interest to Fortnite sniper players.

Having had a bit of a time of it this weekend with server outages and PSN problems, Epic Games released the new Battle Royale experience today.

The Sniper Shootout Limited Time Mode is live right now on PS4, Xbox One and PC and allows for players to duke it out from vast distances.

Players are luckily not limited to just Sniper Rifles though, with Revolvers also included for closer engagements for near the end of the game.

But while it isn’t just Sniper Rifles-only, there are no grenades to be found on the map, while consumables remain the same.

The new Fortnite game mode is having a very short run on servers this week, with Epic Games planning on removing it from playlists on February 2.

No exact time has been give for when it will disappear, although fans in the UK can expect something later in the day.

Apartment hunters in New York City can continue to expect offers of free rent and other freebies this year, according to the real-estate appraiser Miller Samuel.

In December, landlords offered concessions, used to speed up lease signings, on a record 36.2% of apartments on the market, according to a report Thursday co-prepared with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. The market share of concessions hit new highs in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn — the three boroughs under coverage.

“2017 was a challenging year for landlords,” said Jonathan Miller, the CEO of Miller Samuel.

Miller attributed this to a barrage of new, higher-priced units that landlords want to fill soon after they’re ready.

“There’s nothing apparent that is going to change the narrative that a lot of new product is entering the market,” Miller told Business Insider. “That will continue in 2018 and exacerbate the softness at the top.”

The freebies appear to be effective, but with mixed results that partly depend on the number of new apartments, Miller said. The number of new leases signed in Manhattan jumped 48% last month compared to the same period in 2016. At the same time, the median net effective rent, which factors in concessions like a month of free rent, fell by 2.5% year-on-year to $ 3,291. 

This was due to an influx of units, especially in the higher end of the market, Miller said. But in Queens, where new supply wasn’t as strong, the number of first-time leases fell year-on-year by 29%. 

Investors looking for higher returns in a low-interest-rate world helped drive New York’s apartment boom after the recession, Miller added.

But that’s not solving an affordability problem in the cheaper end of the market, which is less profitable to invest in. And for many people, a month of free rent isn’t a good deal beyond a certain price point.

“Because modest-priced apartments are in short supply, you’re going to continue to see tenants scramble for greater affordability by moving further away from wherever they work, or moving to the suburbs,” Miller said.

The perks that landlords in New York use to lure new tenants may soon be cut back. 

Landlords offer perks like gift cards and a month of free rent to attract new tenants, especially when it’s a new building that needs to be filled up.  

In Brooklyn, these concessions more than doubled from a year ago to a record high during July. According to a monthly report from Douglas Elliman Real Estate, 22.1% of new leases came with some kind of giveaway.

“The heavy use of concessions has been working where it’s keeping vacancies from rising,” said Jonathan Miller, CEO of the real-estate appraiser Miller Samuel. But Miller doesn’t expect a significant jump in concessions anytime soon as tenants become more concerned about the cost of their rent excluding discounts. 

“We’re getting to the point where tenants are reluctant to sign with heavy concessions because if the concessions are removed, say a year from now on renewal, many will not be able to afford the rent,” Miller told Business Insider. For example, a month of free living adds onto rental costs in the second year of a tenant’s lease — an extra expense they may not have planned for at first. 

Should renters begin to ignore concessions, landlords may need to focus on making the base rents more attractive to prospective tenants, Miller said. 

Some rents are already falling amid a glut of new housing developments and competition for tenants. In Brooklyn, the net effective median rent, which factors in concessions, fell for a third straight month in July.

Manhattan also got cheaper overall. The median net effective rent in Manhattan fell by 1.9% to $ 3,410, the first negative year-on-year reading in at least five years, and the largest decline in nearly four years.

But the gap between luxury and more moderately priced apartments continued to widen in Manhattan, suggesting that the luxury end of the market kept softening while the more affordable end tightened. The median rent in buildings with doormen fell 0.6% to $ 3,899 from July 2016, while the cost in buildings without this benefit rose by 2.3% to $ 2,932.
