TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State becomes at least the third university this year to suspend Greek life because of alcohol-related tragedies.

University President John Thrasher announced the indefinite suspension on Monday of the school’s 55 fraternities and sororities following the death of a freshman pledge.

Andrew Coffey, a pledge at Pi Kappa Phi, died Friday after he was found unresponsive following a party.

On Monday, 20-year-old Garrett John Marcy, a member of Phi Delta Theta, was charged with the sale and trafficking of cocaine.

After the February hazing death of 19-year old Timothy Piazza, Penn State suspended fraternities and sororities from holding social activities during the spring semester. Louisiana State had a one-month suspension and continues to ban alcohol at Greek parties after the hazing death of 18-year old Maxwell Gruver in September.

Florida State University suspends fraternities after death of student https://briefnews.eu/florida-state-university-suspends-fraternities-after-death-of-student/ https://briefnews.eu/florida-state-university-suspends-fraternities-after-death-of-student/#respond Mon, 06 Nov 2017 23:12:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/florida-state-university-suspends-fraternities-after-death-of-student/ The president of Florida State University (FSU) has declared an indefinite suspension of all fraternities and sororities as police investigate the party death of a student pledging for membership.

The Tallahassee, Florida police said no one has been arrested in connection with the death of Andrew Coffey at an off-campus house party on Friday. The 20-year-old student, a pledge at Pi Kappa Phi and a civil engineering major from Pompano Beach, Florida, was found unresponsive. All attempts to revive him failed.

The fraternity was suspended by its national organization pending the conclusion of the investigation. Police officers were collecting alcoholic beverage bottles scattered on the porch of the home as evidence, AP reported.

In an unrelated incident Monday, 20-year-old Garrett John Marcy, a member of Phi Delta Theta, was charged with the sale and trafficking of cocaine.

Fraternities and sororities named after strings of Greek letters are a national network of single-sex undergraduate social organizations at America’s universities. Their admission procedures, where new members are selected and undergo vetting and hazing, are often shrouded in secrecy. Members usually live on properties owned by the group.

“For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek Life at the university,” FSU President John Thrasher said, according to AP. “There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it.”

Thrasher has also instituted a ban on alcohol at all official student organization events during the suspension. The university has more than 700 such organization outside the fraternity community.

“Like most universities, we worry about alcohol and drug abuse and other dangerous behaviors, and we are doing all we can to educate our students,” Thrasher said. “But all of our students organizations ‒ Greek organizations and the other recognized student organizations on campus ‒ must step up. They will have to participate in the solution.”

The Greek clubs have come under scrutiny recently due to accusations of sexual assault, property damage and racist scandals.

A University of Michigan fraternity and sorority were punished in 2015 after their members reportedly caused $ 230,000 damage to a northern Michigan ski resort.

Three fraternities in Cal State Northridge were suspended the same year when a 19-year-old student, Armando Villa, became dehydrated on a mandatory hike while pledging a fraternity the year prior. Two others fraternities were shut down over allegations of hazing and sexual misconduct.

Also in 2015, a Wesleyan University student filed a federal lawsuit against the Psi Upsilon fraternity and its local chapter, alleging she was thrown over a couch in a common room and raped while others watched, after she tried to leave a party in 2013.

Despite the controversy, fraternities and sororities are powerful social institutions in the US. A 2013 report by Bloomberg found that fraternity connections are influential in obtaining lucrative employment positions at top Wall Street brokerages. Forty-three of the nation’s 50 largest corporation heads are Greek members, along with 40 of the last 47 Supreme Court justices.

Fraternities have their problems — but let’s not forget about the good work that they do https://briefnews.eu/fraternities-have-their-problems-but-lets-not-forget-about-the-good-work-that-they-do/ https://briefnews.eu/fraternities-have-their-problems-but-lets-not-forget-about-the-good-work-that-they-do/#respond Sun, 30 Jul 2017 04:59:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fraternities-have-their-problems-but-lets-not-forget-about-the-good-work-that-they-do/ fraternity volunteeringJames Crisp/AP Images

There has been much debate about the legitimacy of Greek collegiate organizations in the last decade.

Various news reports have highlighted the concerning nature of these secret societies, who prioritize the collective good over the individual, and in their pursuit of doing so, sweep sexual assault, excessive alcohol consumption, and hazing under the rug.

Of that, the result is serious physical and emotional abuse enacted upon students who are barely legal adults.

This conversation has been reopened recently, after the February incident at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Pennsylvania State University.

February witnessed the death of Tim Piazza, a 19-year-old fraternity member who suffered a traumatic brain injury caused by several serious falls down his fraternity’s basement stairs while intoxicated. His brothers, instead of calling 911 and taking the appropriate measures to help him, allegedly left him on a couch for multiple hours before taking the situation seriously. The next day he succumbed to his injuries. Multiple members of the fraternity have been charged with manslaughter.

Cases like these need to be reported. We need to hold these institutions accountable for what they have done, and shape a future of transparency, which warns their successors of what fate will await them if they act carelessly. Most of these members will get away with their reckless behaviours, but some will not. These will end up in newspaper articles or court hearings; their lives forever changed.

However, just as we must report about the grave, we must also report about the good. We need to set a better example for future generations to follow. We need to show that there is more to university social life and fraternity culture than partying, alcohol abuse, and sex.

For although fraternity culture as a whole is unhealthy, there are individual chapters within their communities that are extraordinary, but go uncelebrated. The underreporting of positive Greek achievements creates a strange propaganda where the public wants to hear about negative events because they appear more entertaining.

It also provides a warped perspective of what’s okay and what isn’t for the young men and women going through recruitment every year.

At the beginning of my sophomore year I witnessed a new class of freshmen girls and boys come in ––bright eyed and bushy tailed, as they all do. But this year, not being one myself, and having a certain degree of removal from Greek life, I noticed something concerning. It wasn’t that our chapters were encouraging these girls and boys to drink, or telling them to engage in certain behaviors, but it was them, who brought their own preconceptions about Greek life.

Nobody made these young men and women drink to excess. They did it themselves, despite our warnings. When we held back their hair while they vomited, handing them sips of water, and listening to their apologies of us having to take care of them, we sighed and told them that it was okay, we were here for them, and that we too made mistakes when we first got to university.

Playing devils advocate, you might say that the United States’ high drinking age and the students previous lack of exposure to these substances is what causes them to drink to such an excess when they first join university, but I believe this to be a very one dimensional understanding of the psyche of a college freshman.

The truth is, we’re continously bombarded with images and stories about college students, especially Greek students, who engage in high risk behaviours. We have internalized it over the years and take it for granted as normal.

Yet, there’s also a lot of unspoken good, sisters and brothers who challenge one another academically and intellectually and who support each other through difficult times. These are just the individual examples within houses. On a larger scale, there are entire chapters who act as unwavering beacons of light in their community, that set examples for future generations of students to follow.

Arguably, every Greek community has one. At the University of Washington, it’s the Alpha Chapter of Washington’s Phi Delta Theta. In 2017 they raised $ 28,000 dollars for philanthropies helping the visually impaired, and $ 9,500 for both diabetes research and a local organization supporting youth in foster care. On top of this, they had 53 active members on the Dean’s List, with a cumulative GPA of 3.5. Their chapter is also Green Dot certified, and participates in a multitude of programs aimed at bettering their chapter and their individuals.

We certainly need to hold chapters accountable who are engaging in unacceptable behaviours in order to bring justice to victims of that environment, such as Tim Piazza. However, we also need to highlight those individuals who are doing good for society, and who are training men to be empathetic and driven leaders.

Yes, Greek life is an incredibly unhealthy environment and there are far too many institutions that have been corrupted with almost a century worth of questionable moral ethics, alcohol and drug abuse, and hypermasculine stereotypes.

Yet arguably, being a part of something larger than themselves has helped individuals in some chapters grow as human beings. In this case too, what you see and what you are surrounded by shapes who you become and the behaviour you exhibit. If we provide chapters with the training and resources they need, we can create the kind of organizations we want our children to be a part of.

After all, give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Harvard may end fraternities, sororities, and final clubs by punishing students who join them https://briefnews.eu/harvard-may-end-fraternities-sororities-and-final-clubs-by-punishing-students-who-join-them/ https://briefnews.eu/harvard-may-end-fraternities-sororities-and-final-clubs-by-punishing-students-who-join-them/#respond Sun, 23 Jul 2017 12:50:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/harvard-may-end-fraternities-sororities-and-final-clubs-by-punishing-students-who-join-them/ harvardEllenSeptember/flickr

(Slate) — An official Harvard University committee has recommended that the administration prohibit all students from joining exclusive, traditionally single-gender social clubs like fraternities, sororities, and so-called “final clubs.”

After a damning report found that Harvard final clubs enabled a culture of sexual violence, the school moved last spring to force all final clubs—centuries-old, usually all-male institutions—to admit women or risk having members barred from leadership positions and fellowship recommendations.

Now, writes a committee of students, staff, and faculty members, that’s not good enough. “Even if all of these organizations adopted gender-neutral membership in a timely fashion, there would remain a myriad of practices of these organizations that go against the educational mission and principles espoused by Harvard University,” reads the committee’s report, sent to university community members on Wednesday. Harvard has been trying to push these clubs to go all-gender since the mid-‘80s; in response, the clubs officially disaffiliated themselves from the school.

The new recommendation is the strictest and furthest-reaching policy the school has ever presented on the issue. For now, the committee’s recommendation to phase out single-gender and exclusive groups (or phase in sanctions for joining them) is still just a suggestion. Committee members expect the final policy to be unveiled in the fall, probably modeled on prohibitions against sororities and fraternities instated at Williams College and Bowdoin College.

According to the report, final clubs and Greek organizations dominate the school’s social scene, such that even students who want nothing to do with them find their social lives affected. The sense of belonging some students derive from these groups “comes at the expense of the exclusion of the vast majority of Harvard undergraduates,” the committee wrote. “Of course, that is the definition of selective-membership clubs: some belong, some don’t.

However, it is the invidious manner in which such clubs form their memberships and generate their guest lists (in the case of those that host parties) that makes them incompatible with the goals and standards of Harvard University.” Since the organizations aren’t formally connected to the university, the school can’t outright ban them. Instead, the committee proposes to whittle away their memberships by sending students who join them to an administrative board that will mete out unspecified disciplinary measures. The policy would see the groups “phased out” over the next five years.

Some students and alumni have said that it isn’t fair to target all single-gender groups just because a number of them have become havens for binge-drinking, sexual assault, and hazing. When Harvard first introduced sanctions for participating in single-gender organizations last year, the president of Harpoon Brewery (and an alumni leader of one of Harvard’s final clubs) said letting women into the clubs would actually increase the potential for sexual assaults.

The report says some clubs reacted to the 2016 sanctions “with an increased zest for exclusion and gender discrimination.” This time around, one student in the Hasty Pudding Theatricals troupe, which puts on an all-male show each year, told the New York Times that switching forbidden characteristics of clubs “from gender exclusivity to exclusivity at all” is violating students’ freedom to associate, and “particularly rich coming from one of the most exclusive universities that exists.”

But, in its report, the Harvard committee argues that discrimination based on “gender, race, class, and sexual orientation” is a feature, not a bug, of the types of groups it names. Remember, the school has been trying to get clubs to admit women for more than 30 years. “Time after time, the social organizations have demonstrated behavior inconsistent with an inclusive campus culture, a disregard for the personhood and safety of fellow students, and an unwillingness to change—even as new students join them over generations,” the report says. “The final clubs in particular were products of their time. Due to their resistance to change over the decades, they have lapsed into products behind their time.”

Though there are plenty of existing ills (sexual assault, outright discrimination) that the university wants to quash with this new policy, it sounds like committee members, who dubbed the policy a “preventative step,” are more concerned with shifting the general social culture of the school.

Organizations built around racist, sexist, and classist ideas of belonging will never fully shake that association, especially when the groups’ vaunted identities are so closely tied to their histories and alumni networks. It is the right of Harvard administrators to shape the school’s social environment in whatever ways they believe will best serve the student community—if they don’t want student life dominated by literal old boys’ clubs in 2017, they should be able to advance policies against them.

That doesn’t mean current students will be happy about it—one dissenting member of the committee pointed to a survey that showed a majority of student respondents supporting the groups—but they’ll graduate in a few years before the policy even takes full effect.

In the future, prospective students who very badly wish to join single-gender legacy clubs can simply apply elsewhere. In the best case scenario, a few rounds of matriculation down the road, Harvard students won’t be bemoaning the lack of frat parties and elaborate hazing rituals for a chosen few. They’ll be enjoying a more inclusive social scene dominated by clubs and common-interest organizations that don’t require passing some subjective, elitist litmus test for admittance.

But students aren’t the only population Harvard has to serve. For some alumni members of Harvard’s final clubs, the groups mean more than just memories—they’re a vital connection to the university in its present form. Through current members of the clubs, alumni stoke their college pride and keep up with what’s happening on campus. Some find great fulfillment in helping their younger fellow club members adjust to life after Harvard and advance their careers.

That doesn’t make the school’s reasons for trying to end the clubs any less legitimate, but if Harvard administrators want to maintain their alumni connections (and attendant flow of financial support), they will need to recognize and appropriately address the real loss the end of these clubs will represent for some alumni. Then, they should move forward with a policy that works in the best interests of young people still on Harvard’s campus. To create “an inclusive, healthy, and safe environment for Harvard students,” the committee wrote in its report, “this committee believes we owe it to our future students to take action.”
