Cat Chambers, Reef Break‘s pro surfer and grifter-turned-fixer, is on the run while yet tackling her toughest case yet — to clear her own name — as ABC’s summertime escapade comes to a close on a special night, this Friday at 9/8c.

Set in Nimitz Bay, a community on the fictional U.S. territory of Reef Island, Reef Break stars Poppy Montgomery as the aforementioned Cat, who heading into the finale was tricked into helping spring onetime cohort Doug O’Casey out of the clink. Now, Cat is on the lam, believed to have returned to her criminal ways.

TVLine presented Montgomery with some of our burning questions (Is she doing any of her own surfing? Why not let Grant Bowler use his real-life accent? Where did this show come from??), and invited her to tease the finale’s many cliffhangers — which, if France cooperates, could be resolved in a possible Season 2.

TVLINE | What is the Reader’s Digest version of the origin of this show? Because when ABC announced it for their schedule, it seemed to come out of nowhere.
Well, I sort of had this idea for a while about a surfing badass criminal chick on a tropical island. We pitched it and sold it to France, and then ABC Network heard about it and picked it up and suddenly it was 13 episodes, and off we went.  It was pretty wild.

TVLINE | It always took place in a fictional U.S. territory where cars apparently have steering wheels on either side?
Exactly. We made up this island that was somewhere in the South Pacific, but a US territory. We wanted to make it fictional so that we didn’t have to deal with any real baggage or politics of an island that existed. We wanted to create a world where we could almost do anything. It’s a bit like Fantasy Island.

TVLINE | Talk about filming it in Gold Coast, Queensland. What did that mean for you, as an Australian? It must have been a dream.
I mean, it literally was. I love surfing. I love tropical islands. I love riding jet skis and boats too fast. It was perfect. And I got to play a thief, which is far more in sync with my personality than playing a cop. I’m much more of a criminal than I am a cop-type, I think.

Reef BreakTVLINE | That’s the sense I get watching the show, that this must be among your all-time favorite roles. Like you said, you’re edgy, you’re sexy, you’re flirty, you’re funny, you’re smart….
It’s exactly what I wanted to do. We wanted it to be a wink, and a kind of “TV beach read” for the summer. It’s fun and a bit fantastic. It’s not meant to be heavy or win Emmys. It’s mean to be a sort of homage to all of the shows that I loved that I used to watch in Australia 10 years after you got them in America. [Laughs] But you never got to see girls. I was a young surfer in Australia and I would watch these guys drive fast cars and surf and everything, and I was like, “Why aren’t there any women doing that?” I really can’t think of another female surfer on television ever.

TVLINE | Like, maybe one of Charlie’s Angels surfed when they went undercover or something?
Yeah, or you had Gidget on that giant board. It was never a fierce competitive surfer, and the women in female surfing are badass and I think they need to be represented.

TVLINE | Along those lines, to what extent have we seen you actually surf on the show? I’ve been doing some freeze-framing and can’t quite tell.
Oh, none of the big waves are me. None of the standup. That’s my amazing stunt double, Angie. I got a black eye when I was surfing here in Malibu right before we started filming and they were like, “Nope, you’re not going to surf on any wave. It’s too much of a risk.” The other thing is, truly, I’m not that good. Angie’s amazing, she is truly fierce. She can do flips and all of that in the air. I’m deeply mediocre when it comes to surfing.

TVLINE | And as far as Cat the skateboarder a few weeks back, I called shenanigans.
I did pop it and catch it! I did the flip at the end. But I couldn’t do [those tricks] on a skateboard. I’d kill myself!

Reef BreakTVLINE | I find the casting of Ray Stevenson interesting and refreshing, because here’s this mountain of a man with salt-and-pepper hair pulled back into a ponytail. And you don’t see guys like that on TV. I feel like this is a guy who has lived a life.
Yeah. We wanted him to have that sort of Russell Crowe, brutish feel to him, and Ray was the perfect guy for it.  He’s like a father figure, in a lot of ways, to Cat, who has daddy issues, clearly. She married the father figure in her life and we wanted that to be real. Then you’ve got Des[mond Chiam as Wyatt], who’s literally the opposite. I mean, he looks about 22. He’s beautiful. Then we’ve got Rob Collins, who’s playing Doug O’Casey…. In the finale, there’s a lot of stuff with Cat and Doug. That’s a love triangle situation that kind of reveals itself in the last two episodes.

TVLINE | Wouldn’t that would make it a square at this point, a rectangle?
And then it veers off again. It might be a hexagon, because Jake is also sleeping with Ana Dumont, the governor. There’s a lot of cross-pollinating going on!

Reef BreakTVLINE | Petra is totally your long-lost daughter, right? A kid Cat put up for adoption or something?
That’s what we should do! That is not a bad idea. You’re brilliant, actually, because we’ve been talking about that. That’s so funny.

TVLINE | I thought it was a bit mean to have Grant Bowler, a Kiwi, on the show, there in Australia, surrounded by what has to be dozens of locals, and make him speak with an American accent.
We never wanted it to look like we were shooting in Australia, unlike Harrow, which is set in Australia. We wanted to show an American territory. But Grant slips his accent in and out there. He has kind of a combo accent.

Reef BreakTVLINE | What else can you tease about the finale on Friday night?
Like I said, there are quite a lot of surprises between Cat and her supposed nemesis, Doug O’Casey. Someone goes missing, and someone gets kidnapped…. There’s a lot going on. There are a lot of cliffhangers and it’s a bit of a wild ride.

TVLINE | Are any lives in jeopardy as the season comes to a close?
Oh, yeah. Like five. There are a lot of lives in jeopardy, I will just say that. Like a lot. I’m not sure how we’re going to deal with it all in Season 2.

TVLINE | What’s in it for ABC to renew Reef Break? If the numbers haven’t been huge, what else makes it attractive to them to renew this?
You know, I think we’ve got to take a look at the programming of it; there were so many preemptions and blackouts that it’s hard to get a real read on what the numbers were. Also, you get a lot of bang for your buck on this show, meaning it looks beautiful and we are doing it very “efficiently” when it comes to the price. But I also think it’s one of those shows that, given the right exposure, who wouldn’t enjoy it? It’s a fun ride. I think it’s just got to find it’s legs a little. And it’s an international co-production, so once it airs in France, we’ll get a real sense of what it looks like. If it’s a monster hit in France…

TVLINE | Oh, so you’ll be dubbed.
It’s the same Without a Trace an Unforgettable dubber. I’m telling you, she sounds exactly like me and it looks like her words match my mouth even though she’s speaking French and I’m speaking English. I have yet to meet her but I’m kind of in awe of her.

Leader of France’s ‘angry police’ found dead amid troubling pattern of officer suicides https://briefnews.eu/leader-of-frances-angry-police-found-dead-amid-troubling-pattern-of-officer-suicides/ https://briefnews.eu/leader-of-frances-angry-police-found-dead-amid-troubling-pattern-of-officer-suicides/#respond Tue, 13 Nov 2018 19:03:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/leader-of-frances-angry-police-found-dead-amid-troubling-pattern-of-officer-suicides/

A policewoman who led a group that raised awareness about violence against French officers has been found dead, amid a wave of suicides in the country’s law enforcement community.

Maggy Biskupski, 36, was discovered dead in her home outside Paris, having apparently shot herself with her service weapon. She was the founder and leader of France’s Angry Police Movement, or MPC, which she created after two officers were badly injured by a Molotov cocktail attack in 2016. The incident sparked demonstrations by France’s police force, with protesters denouncing the rise of anti-police sentiment and demanding more resources to improve public safety.

The outspoken officer had been under investigation for speaking to the media about attacks against the police without permission from her superiors.

Her death marks 30 police suicides in France since January, according to AFP. But other outlets have reported higher tallies. The recent suicide of Antoine Boutonnet, France’s former police chief in charge of fighting hooliganism, put this year’s tally at 45, not including 16 suicides by members of the country’s military police, The Local France claims.

Officials and party leaders from across France’s political spectrum mourned Biskupski’s passing, with some using the tragedy to draw attention to the plight of the country’s police.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner expressed “profound sadness” over the death of a woman who was “committed to a cause, that of defending the police, their honor, and their resources.”

Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally Party, said Biskupski’s death was a “terrible symbol of the police suffering she so tirelessly denounced.”

In the past few years, French police have been the target of a number of high-profile attacks and murders. In June 2016, a police officer and his wife were stabbed to death in Magnanville. A year later, a police officer was shot dead and two other officers were wounded in an attack in Paris.

  • French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly referenced President Donald Trump’s “The Art of the Deal” while talking to Trump about the escalating trade dispute between the EU and US.
  • Sources told Axios that the exchange took place on the sidelines of the NATO summit this month, when Trump and Macron began discussing reciprocal tariffs freshly imposed on the EU and US.
  • Macron told Trump that he “read the ‘Art of the Deal,’ and understands that retaliatory tariffs give the EU “leverage in negotiations.”
  • Foreign leaders have taken to using Trump’s own hardline techniques for their negotiations with the president.

The exchange took place on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Brussels earlier this month. During a bilateral meeting, Trump and Macron began discussing the intensifying trade dispute between Europe and the US, sources familiar with the conversation told Axios.

Home and Away legend Cornelia Frances dies aged 77 after battle with cancer https://briefnews.eu/home-and-away-legend-cornelia-frances-dies-aged-77-after-battle-with-cancer/ https://briefnews.eu/home-and-away-legend-cornelia-frances-dies-aged-77-after-battle-with-cancer/#respond Tue, 29 May 2018 02:32:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/home-and-away-legend-cornelia-frances-dies-aged-77-after-battle-with-cancer/

The Australian actress passed away surrounded by her family and friends after a battle with cancer.

Cornelia had a number of television roles, including a part in The Young Doctors, Son and Daughters and Kingswood Country.

She also hosted the Australian version of game show The Weakest Link between 2001 and 2002.

However, she was most famous for her for portrayal of Morag Bellingham in the popular Seven soap Home and Away, which she first appeared on in 1988.

Since the her death was announced tributes have come flooding in from the people who knew her best.

Home and Away actor Ray Meagher, who played her onscreen brother, said: “Cornie was an incredibly loved and valued member of our cast over many, many years.

“We had a moment of silence for her on set this morning and she’ll be sadly missed by both cast and crew.”

A Seven spokesperson said: “Cornelia Frances was a unique person, her on screen presence inspired a generation of actors.

“This gift was coupled with an ability to bring a sense of dignity and presence into each room she entered.

“Her energy and character will be missed.”

Meanwhile, her son Lawrence shared a picture of his mother lying peacefully in bed alongside a heartfelt message.

He wrote on Instagram: “A very personal photo of my mum during one of her resting moments, she is so peaceful, soft and serene.

“I truly love this woman.”

In 2017, Cornelia was diagnosed with bladder cancer and doctors later told her the cancer had spread to her hip and spine.

Back in January Cornelia spoke to The Sunday Telegraph about her illness and hopes of returning to acting.

“I swear I have had a hex placed on me for the past 12 months,” she said.

“I discovered I had bladder cancer. This then spread to my hip bone which fractured.”

She continued: “And then I almost died from loss of blood due to an ulcer in my throat. Despite all this, I am still here, as the old song goes.”

Revealing her wish to reprise her role as Ray ‘Alf’ Meagher’s evil sister Morag in Home and Away, she added: “I would dearly love to go back to Summer Bay but haven’t heard anything as yet.”

Cornelia is survived by her son Lawrence Eastland.

Sacre bleu! France’s terrifying snubbed XI https://briefnews.eu/sacre-bleu-frances-terrifying-snubbed-xi/ https://briefnews.eu/sacre-bleu-frances-terrifying-snubbed-xi/#respond Fri, 18 May 2018 03:02:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sacre-bleu-frances-terrifying-snubbed-xi/ IF Australia needed a gentle reminder of the enormity of the task they face at this year’s World Cup, it landed in their inboxes on Friday morning.

France coach Didier Deschamps sent out his star-studded 23-man squad for the tournament and it’s filled to the brim with world class talent: Paul Pogba. Antoine Griezmann. Kylian Mbappe. N’Golo Kante.

It’s enough to make Bert van Marwijk weep.

But as confronting as the names of the elite football talent who made the cut are, it’s those who missed out that really rams home the sort of superpower Australia is about to confront.

It got us thinking — you could make a second XI from the French leftovers and they’d probably start second favourites to escape Group B.

So that’s what we’ve done. Here are the scraps of a footballing giant. And it’s a scary proposition.

This a group of stars who have won titles across Europe, boss midfields and bang in goals for fun.

For the purposes of this exercise we’ve included the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Dimitri Payet, who missed out on France’s squad due to untimely injuries.

HAVE A READ AND VOTE – COULD THIS TEAM BEAT AUSTRALIA?

GOALKEEPER: Benoit Costil

The Bordeaux shotstopper, and long-time Rennes star, earned one cap for France in 2016 and is an experienced head in Ligue 1

He wouldn’t look out of place in the World Cup, even if he struggles to crack the Hugo Lloris-Steve Mandanda stranglehold for the goalkeeping duties.

But he’s an experienced head in Ligue 1.

DEFENCE: Lucas Digne, Laurent Koscielny, Mamadou Sakho, Aymeric Laporte

Lucas Digne is an absolute luxury in a back-up squad, and the 24-year-old has 21 national caps to his name but the left backhas slipped back in the pecking order in part due to a lack of playing time at La Liga giants Barcelona — where he’s stuck behind Jordi Alba.

Laurent Koscielny would’ve been a certain figure in Deschamps squad had it not been for his late-season Achilles injury.

The Arsenal veteran is a strong presence in the middle, and would have a formidable partnership with Premier League rival Mamadou Sakho — who is coming off a strong season with Crystal Palace and is known to chip in with goals at key times.

Throw in Manchester City’s $ 106 million man Aymeric Laporte, who can comfortably fill in at right back as he did for the Citizens at times this year, and you’ve got a back four that almost any World Cup nation would be proud of.

MIDFIELD: Moussa Sissoko, Adrien Rabiot, Kingsley Coman, Dimitri Payet

Dimitri Payet suffered the cruellest blow of all when he suffered a hamstring injury in Marseille’s Europa League final defeat to Atletico Madrid. Payet is a key loss to France, both for his mesmeric playmaking and his superb free kicks. In 2018 he has eight goals and 18 assists for Marseille.

Payet would be the general of this midfield — unlocking the pace of Kinsgley Coman and skills of Adrien Rabiot.

Maligned Tottenham star Moussa Sissoko isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s quickly forgotten that he was arguably France’s best-performed star during the Euros two years ago when he took command in central midfield. That’s where we’re picking him, giving him an enforcer role — rather than pushing him to the wings where he can look lost and clumsy.

We’ll leave those areas for lively duo Coman and Rabiot.

Rabiot featured in 32 games for PSG as the powerhouse romped to another title in Ligue 1, bringing a creative presence while contributing nine assists. Coman enjoyed something of a breakout at the 2016 Euros but a three-month stint on the sidelines with an ankle injury this year hurt his chances — even if his pace, and ability in front of goal, would be a vital asset.

FORWARDS: Anthony Martial, Alexandre Lacazette

On the surface, it seems remarkable that any team could leave out a duo as deadly as Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette — that is, of course, until you cast your eye over the sizzling attack France has assembled.

Martial is desperately unlucky, and would not have looked out of place as the starting option on the left — which will now likely go to Thomas Lemar. But ultimately he has Jose Mourinho to curse, as Martial’s playing time — down on his 2015-16 and 16-17 output — diminished for the Red Devils late in the year and made him a target for the axe.

Further south, a case could be made to suggest Lacazette’s $ 84 million move from Lyon was the beginning of the end for his World Cup hopes.

In France he was one of the world’s most in-demand strikers, and he’d racked up 100 Ligue 1 goals — finding the back of the net nearly once every two games.

Despite scoring 14 times following his move to the Premier League, the 26-year-old couldn’t find a way in and instead lost his spot to the man he replaced at Arsenal: Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud.

BENCH: Eliaquim Mangala, Kurt Zouma, Mathieu Debuchy, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Wissam Ben Yedder, Kevin Gameiro, Karim Benzema

And if that doesn’t do it for you, here’s a bench sprinkled with talent — all of whom would be welcomed by teams across the World Cup. It’s a little unbalanced, without a goalkeeper, but we think they’d get the job done.

.

FRANCE’S MENACING LEFT-OUT XI

Goalkeeper: Benoit Costil

Defenders: Lucas Digne, Laurent Koscielny, Mamadou Sakho, Aymeric Laporte

Midfielders: Moussa Sissoko, Adrien Rabiot, Kingsley Coman, Dimitri Payet.

Forwards: Anthony Martial, Alexandre Lacazette.

Bench: Eliaquim Mangala, Kurt Zouma, Mathieu Debuchy, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Wissam Ben Yedder, Kevin Gameiro, Karim Benzema

Paris to revoke Assad’s Legion of Honor, after bombing ‘tyrant’ holding France’s highest decoration https://briefnews.eu/paris-to-revoke-assads-legion-of-honor-after-bombing-tyrant-holding-frances-highest-decoration/ https://briefnews.eu/paris-to-revoke-assads-legion-of-honor-after-bombing-tyrant-holding-frances-highest-decoration/#respond Wed, 18 Apr 2018 01:49:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paris-to-revoke-assads-legion-of-honor-after-bombing-tyrant-holding-frances-highest-decoration/ Following its missile strike on Syria, Paris suddenly realized that Bashar Assad is still holding the country’s most prestigious Legion of Honor decoration, received in 2001 from Jacques Chirac, local media has revealed.

France has initiated a procedure to revoke the Legion of Honor awarded to Syrian President Bashar Assad, an official of the French presidency told BFM TV broadcaster on Monday evening. “The Elysee [palace] confirms that a disciplinary procedure to withdraw the Legion of Honor of [President] Assad has been launched,” the official said.

Assad was made a knight of the Legion of Honor (Legion d’Honneur in French), the country’s highest decoration, back in 2001, when he met former French president Jacques Chirac. At that time, he had just succeeded his father Hafez Assad, who had ruled Syria for several decades.

French President Emmanuel Macron (C) poses on the TV set before an interview with RMC-BFM journalist Jean-Jacques Bourdin (R) and Mediapart investigative website journalist Edwy Plenel (L), at the Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris, France, April 15, 2018, Francois Guillot

A resolution was adopted in 2010 to make it easier to strip foreign recipients of the award, if they had committed “acts inconsistent with the honor,” according to BFM TV. Under French laws, the prestigious decoration is automatically withdrawn if the recipient is sentenced to at least one year in prison.

Previously, France revoked the awards given to American cyclist Lance Armstrong, British designer John Galliano and also Harvey Weinstein, after allegations of sexual harassment by the Hollywood producer surfaced.

The news comes on the heels of the latest missile strikes on Syria, conducted by the United States, Britain and France. The US-led attack hit three targets in Syria, a research center and military bases the coalition said were linked to Damascus’ chemical stockpiles, and was launched in response to an alleged chemical attack in Douma on April 7.

French president Emmanuel Macron defended the strike against Syria, conducted without any UN resolution, claiming that Paris was not acting unilaterally and that it was “the international community” that legitimized the military action. “We have complete international legitimacy to act within this framework,” Macron asserted in the interview, broadcast by BFM TV, RMC radio and Mediapart. “Three members of the Security Council have intervened.”

In a follow-up interview, Macron said he urged his US counterpart Donald Trump to limit the size of the strikes, adding, however, that he persuaded him to keep American troops in Syria for the long-term.

Last year, though, he produced more measured statements on Syria. Speaking to eight European newspapers, Macron argued that there is currently no viable alternative to Assad, who is preventing Syria from turning into a failed state. “I have not stated that Bashar al-Assad’s departure is a pre-condition for everything because nobody has shown me a legitimate successor,” he maintained at the time.

  • He will will decide whether to strike back when all the necessary information has been gathered.
  • Macron said France wanted to remove the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons capabilities. When asked whether those would be the targets of French strikes he said he’d see about that.

PARIS (Reuters) – France has proof the Syrian government carried out a chemical weapons attack last week and will decide whether to strike back when all the necessary information has been gathered, President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday.

“Our teams have been working on this all week and we will need to take decisions in due course, when we judge it most useful and effective,” Macron told broadcaster TF1 when asked whether a red line had been crossed.

France’s PSA Group Has “Chosen a Brand” for U.S. but Won’t Say Which https://briefnews.eu/frances-psa-group-has-chosen-a-brand-for-u-s-but-wont-say-which/ https://briefnews.eu/frances-psa-group-has-chosen-a-brand-for-u-s-but-wont-say-which/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 20:32:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/frances-psa-group-has-chosen-a-brand-for-u-s-but-wont-say-which/ 2017 Peugeot 3008 and 1953 Citroen 2CV

–

You may have heard by now that French automaker PSA Group plans to sell vehicles in the United States once again after a nearly 30-year absence but is starting first with “mobility.” As part of a three-phase plan, the company launched its Free2Move mobility aggregation platform in Seattle last year, and the next phases include adding its vehicles to different car-sharing services and then finally retailing its wares. Larry Dominique, president and CEO of PSA North America, told attendees at the National Auto Dealers Association convention in Las Vegas, “Our launch as a mobility service shouldn’t overshadow our core business: We are a car manufacturer.”

–

As a global automaker, PSA Group is absent from two prominent markets: India and the United States. Its planned re-entry into the States is on a 10-year plan, but Dominique said he has group CEO Carlos Tavares’s blessing to begin offering cars whenever he feels the market is ready. When C/D asked Dominique which models could be coming, he declined to give specifics. “We’ve chosen a brand, but it’s too early to talk about it,” he said.

–

Could it be Peugeot? Citroën? Might PSA troll General Motors and sell Opels here? Actually, that third option, while perhaps the least exciting, is not so unlikely. One of the advantages Tavares noted after the PSA Group acquired the brands from GM for $ 1.4 billion last year is that Opel engineers can “ensure the future products for this market will be fully U.S. compliant,” aligned with both regulations and Americans’ particular tastes. They could do that for Peugeot or Citroën, too, as the company consolidates its holdings and shares engineering and development programs. Badging new products under one of the French brands would be no more difficult than it was for GM to sell Opel products here under the Buick banner.

–

But even as the PSA Group sounds resolute about its re-entry into the U.S. market, it’s hard to tell whether the first phase has gone swimmingly so far. The Free2Move app can be downloaded and used anywhere in the United States where its aggregated mobility offerings—car-sharing services such as Zipcar and Car2Go—are available, but the company has only “activated its marketing” in Seattle, Dominque told C/D. “It’s just a good market for mobility,” he said.

–

–

Peugeot cars were pulled from the U.S. market in 1991, and Citroën cars haven’t been offered by the manufacturer for sale stateside since the mid-1970s.
