At least eight people have been killed in Nicaragua after violent clashes between authorities and demonstrators resumed just hours after peace talks. The FDA has been approving its fair share of AI-powered medical technology, but its latest might be particularly helpful if you ever have a nasty fall. The agency has greenlit Imagen’s OsteoDetect, an AI-based diagnostic tool that can quickly detect distal radius wrist fractures. Its machine learning algorithm studies 2D X-rays for the telltale signs of fractures and marks them for closer study. It’s not a replacement for doctors or clinicians, the FDA stressed — rather, it’s to improve their detection and get the right treatment that much sooner.

The approval came relatively quickly by using the De Novo premarket review pathway, which streamlines the process for products with “low to moderate risk.”

You may have to wait a while before you see OsteoDetect in use at the family doctor’s office. However, you might see considerably more AI going forward. FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb recently said his administration was collaborating with experts on a “new regulatory framework” that could help the government body keep pace with technologies like AI. If that goes forward, algorithmic health care could quickly become commonplace.

Stannard is conscious and has escaped major injury, having been floored on Coogee Bay Road outside a kebab shop in the early hours of this morning.

The 35-year-old was struck by a man in an unprovoked attack after reportedly having a “nice conversation” with him at around 3.10am. Stannard had earlier attended a farewell dinner for departing coach Andy Friend, who along with teammates Lewis Holland and Ben O’Donnell chased down the 22-year-old Brit after he tried to flee.

Squad members, team management and family members of the players were present at the dinner and throughout the night.
The veteran playmaker remains in a stable condition in St Vincents Hospital, with his participation in next month’s Commonwealth Games in grave doubt. Police say Stannard was standing outside the kebab shop when he was punched in an alleged unprovoked assault, causing him to fall and strike his head on the pavement.

Inspector Steve Egbers says the two men were “seemingly having a nice conversation” at the time.

Insp Egbers said Stannard would remain in hospital for “a little while” under observation.

One of the most popular figures on the Australian sevens scene, 35-year-old Stannard was chosen to captain Australia at the coming Commonwealth Games recently.

Rugby Australia released a statement confirming they are working with NSW Police to investigate the incident.

“Rugby Australia is aware of an incident which has resulted in the hospitalisation of Australian Men’s Sevens player James Stannard in Sydney overnight,” the statement read.

“Rugby Australia is working with NSW Police to investigate the matter and will provide a further update later today.”
The teams were due to play again Friday, but the game was cancelled on Thursday due to a raft of New Zealand injuries with the players then given the day off. The accused was interviewed at Maroubra Police Station and has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

Bailed on strict conditions, he is expected to appear at Waverley Local Court on April 19.

Vitamin A – also known as retinol – is important for a healthy diet.

According to the NHS it boosts your immune system, helps vision in dim light and keeps skin healthy.

But having too much in your system can be toxic.

Indeed, the danger of too much vitamin A has been known for centuries.

Additionally, some people may consume it in supplements – it’s present in many multivitamins and fish liver oil.

However, having too much vitamin A in your body can cause a condition called hypervitaminosis A.

It can be acute – happen over a few hours or days – or chronic – gradually building up over a long period of time, and excess amounts area stored in your liver.

Symptoms include changes to vision, bone pain and skin changes.

However, chronic toxicity can lead to liver damage and increased pressure on your brain.

Most people develop it after taking high-dose supplements.

Additionally, the NEJM study discovered a link between high amounts of vitamin A and risk osteoporosis and bone fracture.

Other potential complications include liver damage and kidney damage due to excess calcium.

According to the NHS, having more than an average of 1.5mg a day of vitamin A over many years may make them more likely to fracture when you’re older.

This is a particular concern for older women who are already at risk of osteoporosis.

The Department of Health recommends that if you take vitamin A supplements you shouldn’t eat liver or liver products, such as pâté, more than once a week.

According to the NHS, as well as building strong bones and teeth, the mineral regulates muscle contractions – including heartbeat – and ensures blood clots normally.

Certain groups are at risk of calcium deficiency, including post-menopausal women and those who are lactose intolerant or vegan.

However, taking high supplement doses – more than 1,500mg – can be dangerous, according to the NHS.

They warn it could trigger stomach pain and diarrhoea.

However, having too high a concentration of calcium in the blood can also trigger a condition called hypercalcemia, which can prove life-threatening.

Initial symptoms may include headaches and fatigue, but it may start to affect your kidneys – causing excessive thirst and urination, as well as kidney stones – and triggering abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, vomiting and decreased appetite.

As it progresses it can also affect your heart, muscles, bones and even cause depression, memory loss and irritability.

What’s more, according to the Sepsis Alliance, a risk with kidney stones is a kidney infection, which can lead to sepsis.

Sebastien Bourdais was transported to a hospital for surgery after the French driver suffered fractures to his pelvis and right hip from a crash during qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, officials said.

The former Formula One driver was to be operated on at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital, IndyCar said in a statement.

Bourdais, 38, who was driving for Dale Coyne Racing, slammed head-on into the safety barriers when his Honda-powered car lost control at Turn 2.

“Sebastien is in good hands here at IU Methodist Hospital with the staff, and now we just wait for him to recover,” team owner Dale Coyne said in a statement.

During his first two laps, Bourdais was a full mile per hour faster than the rest of the field at an average speed of 231.534 mph before he crashed into the wall on his third circuit. Qualifying is determined by the average time over four laps.

Bourdais won the season-opening race at St Petersburg, Florida, and had the also clocked the fastest time in Friday’s practice.

Two-times pole winner Ed Carpenter had the fastest car in Saturday’s qualifying for the May 28 race with a four-lap average of 230.468 mph, while double Formula One champion Fernando Alonso was seventh-fastest in his debut race.
