“I love this car.” So said Jaguar designer Ian Callum, quite genuinely, as the Jaguar F-Pace SVR drove onto the stage at the company’s new headquarters in Mahwah, N.J. Despite accepting and even embracing Jaguar’s decision to produce SUVs, it’s quite obvious (because he says so repeatedly) that Callum is still a guy with a lust for high-powered sports cars. The F-Pace SVR melds these two elements to create something he gleefully describes as “ridiculous.”
Boasting Jaguar Land Rover’s now-familiar supercharged 5.0-liter V8, the SVR produces 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. Jag estimates it’ll hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 176 mph, which will make it one of the quickest and fastest SUVs on the road when it arrives in dealerships this summer.
It’s not just the big engine, however. Upgraded mechanical improvements and enhancements include stiffer springs, wider and lighter forged alloy wheels (21- or 22 inches), bigger brakes (15.5-inch front, 15.6-inch rear), an electronic active rear differential, a variable active exhaust that’s 14.5 pounds lighter than the standard one, and specially tuned software for the adaptive suspension, electric steering, eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive and Dynamic Driving Mode.
Callum’s team also massaged the aerodynamics with larger air intakes, rear bumper side strakes, and fender vents that lower pressure in the wheel arches to reduce lift and increase cooling. A unique hood features vents designed to, well, vent hot air from the engine compartment. There are also wheel arch extensions and lower body moldings to create a more muscular appearance, while the rear sees fat quad tailpipes that one would assume should bark and burp like any good Jaguar SVR.
Inside, there are thinner, light-weight sport seats done up in snazzy quilted leather. The rear seat also gets sportier seats with a similar fixed headrest design as those up front. The pistol-like sport gear selector shifter, as used in the Jaguar F-Type, replaces the standard rotary shifter design. It still takes up way too much room on the center console.
Pricing starts at $ 80,985. One would assume Mr. Callum will gets his for less than that.

It’s been six months since our long-term 2018 Jaguar F-Pace S arrived to warm our hands and hearts. Jaguar’s most popular model with consumers was equally popular with the Autoblog staff. We drove it 13,000 miles and would continue to rack up more if Jaguar would just let us keep the keys. It was a great follow-up to our fuel-efficient but slightly gutless 2017 Jaguar XE diesel.
Our Caesium Blue bomber is loaded with nearly every option. That includes heated seats front and rear, a black package that swaps out chrome for black trim, and a full-size spare (that takes up a lot space). The S model’s supercharged 3.0-liter V6 sends 380 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. All in, our F-Pace S will set you back $ 74,640.
Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore: I spent a lot of time in the F-Pace this year. It’s powerful, sporty, looks sharp (love the lively blue-purple paint) and has a solid interior.
The styling resonated with me. I think Jaguar design boss Ian Callum and team nailed the proportions and curves. A crossover was sure to be controversial with Jag loyalists, but it’s beautiful, and the reasoning for joining the SUV fray is ironclad. Everybody from Ferrari to Porsche is there.
I appreciated the driving dynamics. The steering has decent feedback, the engine sounds good and has energy, and you ride just high enough to feel in command. The Jaguar DNA comes through.
I took it to a tailgate, where I was boxed in and had to be the guy in the Jaguar who asks people to move so he can leave early. Cutting through rows of tailgaters in a purple Jag with black wheels isn’t exactly subtle. But the car was versatile. I put tons of groceries in the back. My dog enjoyed the second row. It was good in snow. All the things you want in a crossover.
The F-Pace was one of the more memorable long-termers we’ve had at Autoblog. It was fun to drive and stayed in high demand, even after we’d had it for months. It’s not perfect. The interior was a little plain, and I don’t love the infotainment, but in its first attempt at a crossover — Jaguar nailed it.
Senior Editor, Green John Beltz Snyder: While I found it comfortable for long highway drives Up North, this thing is absolutely ferocious in Dynamic Mode with the gear selector set to S. The paddles amp up the fun. It really changed the character of this cat, and I was always surprised by the transformation.
I got a lot of looks in the F-Pace. A dude in a Porsche Boxster shadowed me for about 5 miles before pulling alongside, giving me a thumbs-up and speeding away. I liked the looks as well — the silhouette, the stance, the color and the blacked-out wheels were all emotionally appealing.
The F-Pace S sounds a lot different, depending on if you’re inside or outside. To those standing nearby or driving behind, it sounds aggressive (enough to scare my kid). But to occupants, the engine sounds like a grumpy kitty, which is cute.
A lot of people griped about the weird, bulging spare-tire cover in the cargo area. I found it useful, though, as it left narrow spaces on either side of the bulge to stow small items and keep them from rolling around. Still, not an ideal use of space.
Bluetooth streaming from my iPhone sucked. The sound would drop off for seconds at a time, while my podcast kept going, forcing me to back up when the connection returned. This happened every single time I drove it, usually several times during my hour-long commute. It has happened in other Jaguars, too. It’s maddening.
Associate Editor Reese Counts: I’ve spent a lot of time in this car. I’ve taken it through eight states on road trips, racking up thousands of miles and spilling an embarrassing number of french fries between the seats (don’t worry, I vacuumed up every one). I’m handing back the keys with mixed emotions. I like it a lot. I like the styling, the driving dynamics and that sweet supercharged V6. The problem comes in the shape of a German temptress. The Porsche Macan is just better.

The F-Pace looks phenomenal, but the interior design is generic, and many materials feel cheap. The infotainment occasionally goes on the fritz (a video producer spent a day without the backup camera), and the rotary shifter provides no benefits over a traditional unit. It’s not as sharp or responsive as the Macan. I’m sad to see it go, but I won’t miss it as much as some of our previous long-term cars.
Associate Editor Joel Stocksdale: Our XE was great, with the exception of the diesel engine, so when we got the F-Pace, I feared its ride and handling would be overly compromised by the height and added weight. But this crossover delivers on most everything I loved about the XE. The steering is among the best in precision and weight, the chassis is communicative, and the ride pleasant even in Sport mode.
And oh how I love that supercharged V6. I won’t go into detail, since I already did in a previous post, but it’s so responsive, linear and torquey. The F-Pace does feel heavier and more roly-poly than Jaguar’s cars, but not enough to keep me from smiling behind the wheel. If I were in the market for a fun luxury vehicle but needed the extra ground clearance and interior space, I wouldn’t hesitate in picking one up.
Maybe that didn’t always come across in some of our griping posts, but keep in mind how nitpicky those issues were. If that’s all we had to complain about, things went well with this car.
Video Production Manager Eddie Sabatini: I’m gonna miss the F-Pace, but I think it’s overrated. Yes, it looks great, maybe the best-looking SUV on the market, but I had issues. First, the blue was too purple for my taste. The F-Pace looks better in red, green, or black, but the blackout package was a nice touch. It’s quick for such a big vehicle. But I never found a comfortable seating position, something that plagues me in most crossovers.
I don’t think the engine sounded good, I found it annoying, like a feral kitten calling out for mommy. I’d listen to music to drown out the annoying whine, except the Bluetooth connection was spotty. Annoying.
The whole infotainment system had issues. Like, what’s up with the “button” for the heated/cooled seats? It’s right there on the dash with an icon of a seat on it, and you press it thinking, “Ahhhh … soon my butt will be toasty.” Nope! It’s just there to take you to a menu on the infotainment screen. What? How about a real button that does what it says — not a button that actually doesn’t.
How to sum up the F-Pace? SUV that turns heads but falls short of truly spectacular? It was quick, good-looking, and loaded with creature comforts, but living with it made the problems stand out.
Senior Producer Christopher McGraw: Personally, I love it. I love the engine to death. The all-wheel-drive system works extremely well, and it preserves the rear-drive feel. In Dynamic mode with the transmission set to Sport, this thing is fierce. The suspension is firm without being harsh and does a decent job of managing body roll. The steering, though, while firm and quick, lacks a bit in feedback.
Others come close — Volvo comes to mind — but no crossover can top this look. And the black package is worth every penny. But the exterior isn’t where I’m spending my time driving, and the interior is less than stellar.
The problems begin before we even get inside. The keyless entry works flawlessly, but keyless locking rarely works at all. Once inside, we are met with materials you’d expect in a Buick, not a $ 75,000 luxury SUV with a $ 2,350 “luxury interior” add-on.
If you can get over the interior issues, and technological hiccups don’t drive you insane, the F-Pace is an incredible, comfortable performance SUV. A price tag of $ 75,000 is hard to swallow, but if you leave off some creature comforts, you can get this engine and performance, not to mention head-turning looks, in the low $ 60,000s. Either way, these past six months have been a blast.

We’re nearing the end of our six-month long-term test of the 2018 Jaguar F-Pace S. We’ve put nearly 12,000 miles on the car in just a few months, and we have plans to add a few thousand more before time runs out. It’s been a cold and snowy winter, so the Jaguar’s combination of heated seats, an electrically-heated windshield and all-wheel drive has made it a popular choice. It’s going to be a sad day when the car goes back to Jaguar, though our new long-term 2018 Honda Ridgeline will help fill our cat-sized void.
I’ll miss you when you’re gone. #Jaguar#FPace@therealautoblogpic.twitter.com/2PSPCjrkjz

A few months back, we did a midterm check-in on during a Facebook live video. As you can see by my coat and our white backdrop, the weather has only gotten worse. The cold does change things, so this gives us a good opportunity to see how well the F-Pace is holding up. Watch the video above or click through to see the comments on Facebook.

Like so many other automobiles from this decade, our long-term Jaguar F-Pacecrossover has customizable interior lighting, a part of the $ 2,350 Luxury Interior Package. I’ve previously admitted to the fact that ambient lighting has me split in opinion. On the one hand I know that it’s probably going to end up being dated and uncool in the future. On the other, I actually quite enjoy it, possibly because I grew up in the neon-fueled world of early ’00s import tuner culture. I also like it from a color-coordination perspective. Our Jaguar’s bold blue hue called Caesium can be brought inside with equally bright illumination. It’s very satisfying.
But that satisfaction of having everything just so is quickly sullied as the center stack and switches are only one color that can’t be changed. Admittedly, that’s completely normal, but unlike many of those other cars that use neutral white illumination, the Jag’s light up in the same blue/teal color that made your Razr phone look cool so many years ago. And so whether you bathe your cabin in blue, red, purple or green light, the ambient lighting will clash with the main switch gear. You can pick a shade of blue for the ambient lighting that roughly matches the switches, but I don’t want to compromise my color preference because Jaguar didn’t put in LEDs in that would be neutral (or, even better, change to match the ambient settings).
I have other complaints about color-matching in the car, too. The instrument panel, which is a flat screen, has a few different display modes, but most of the readouts use a similar (but not quite the same) blue/teal color as the switchgear. So that doesn’t match, either.
Then, in the sport mode, the instrument screen switches to red. That brings me to my next gripe: all the ambient lighting switches to red when choosing this mode. I get it, red means sporty and Jaguar wants everything about sport mode to feel sporty. But damn it, I paid for custom lighting, let me keep that lighting when I’m also in a sporty mood. I actually sometimes skip the sport mode because I want to be swathed in my favorite hue more than I want slightly more sporty driving dynamics. Oh, and of course the switchgear remains teal/blue even in sport mode.
So yes, this is picky. But that’s the beauty of evaluating a car like the F-Pace over a longer period of time. Sure, we’ll obviously touch on things like the excellent powertrain, but we also get to notice those little things that can drive owners nuts — or make them fall even deeper in love with their car. After all, despite everything I’ve said, I would still add ambient lighting to my F-Pace if I were to buy one. It just makes it feel a little more personal and fun. I just wish Jaguar put a little extra effort into it.

There are many things we like about our 2018 Jaguar F-Pace long-term car, as well as some things we don’t care for, but easily one of the best things about it is the engine. Under the hood is the 380-horsepower supercharged V6 that Jaguar offers on other models. That amount of power would be fun in just about any car with any engine, but there are specific reasons why this particular engine is special, and it’s because of that supercharger.
Supercharged engines have a very different character than increasingly common turbo engines. One of the most noticeable differences being engine response. Unlike turbo engines, the F-Pace’s V6 feels hardwired to your foot. Every extra millimeter of pedal travel yields a slightly greater amount of tug. And the tug is felt immediately. Even the best turbo engines have a hard time recreating this response. The power band is very linear, as well, so you know exactly what you’re getting every time you hit the gas.
The engine is wonderfully torquey, too. Because the Jaguar’s engine uses a classic Roots-type blower, there’s a major improvement in low-end torque. This means that our F-Pace has loads of grunt for punting around at low-rpm and can seriously move when tromping on the gas. And because of the near-instant throttle response and linear power band, it doesn’t slam you in the back unexpectedly like some turbo engines do.
Despite how great these supercharged engines are to experience, we’re concerned that supercharged engines like this may disappear in all but ultra-limited production, high-performance cars such as the Chevy Corvette Z06 and Cadillac CTS-V. The reason being that car companies have to keep making cars more fuel efficient and lower emitting. Putting a supercharger on an engine is adding a handicap, since it takes engine power to spin the belt-driven supercharger. And when a turbo, which uses wasted energy from exhaust gas to spin the compressor and built boost, can effectively do the same thing, it’s hard to make a case for a supercharger.
We won’t give up hope completely, though. Mazda is using superchargers on its spark-assisted compression ignition gasoline engines. And while we’re not sure how powerful and sporty those will be, Mazda has said that it’s going with superchargers for exactly the reasons we like the Jaguar engine: smooth power and fast throttle response. They’re also expected to be 10- to 30-percent more efficient than regular gasoline engines, so they should meet regulations for a while into the future. Until those engines roll out though, we’ll continue to enjoy the one in our Jag.

Our long-term Jaguar F-Pace is stuffed full of options. It’s the top-trim S model with the most powerful engine, and we selected five of seven available option packages. The two we didn’t pick were the cheapest ones. There were a handful of individual options we selected, as well, and one of them, the heated windshield, is one that you should definitely think twice about before choosing. The reason being that, in this editor’s opinion, it’s thoroughly irritating.
I actually didn’t even know our F-Pace had it the first time I signed it out for an evening. At the end of the day, I grabbed the key, walked down to the parking lot and drove it away without a second thought. A couple miles down Woodward Avenue, though, I noticed that my view out wasn’t quite as clear as I expected. I figured the windshield was dusty or something, so on went the windshield washer for a few moments. After everything dried off, I had the same issue. I pulled the washer lever again and still nothing. I leaned forward and squinted my eyes, and that’s when I spotted the minuscule heater wires across the entire pane of glass.
And once I saw the wires, it was almost impossible to unsee them. My unobstructed view out the car suddenly turned into a CRT screen full of scan lines. They never kept me from safely driving the F-Pace (after all, they are extremely small), but I could never completely forget they were there. It’s incredibly frustrating and it gets worse at night as the wires combine with oncoming headlights. I’m not the only one who dislikes them either, as Senior Editor John Snyder and Contributing Editor James Riswick voiced their displeasure with the feature.
Not everyone in the office feels this way about the heated windshield, though. Associate Editor Reese Counts said that they don’t bother him one bit. And in cold weather climates like Michigan, it should be handy for clearing snow, ice and condensation from the windshield. With these differing opinions, then, this is an option that you’ll definitely want to experience for yourself before actually choosing it. You might find it unobtrusive or you might find it insufferable.
As for me, I don’t think I could deal with having those wires in my face all year ’round. I would rather spend 10 percent of the year when we have accumulating snow and ice scraping it off manually so that the other 90 percent of the year I have a crystal clear view of the road.

We just spent six months driving around Jaguar’s XE in diesel trim, a fun, frugal sports sedan that impressed all of us. But we know that diesel sedans are a pretty slim part of the market, so we decided to check out the other side of Jaguar’s coin. For the next six months, we’ll be driving a 2018 Jaguar F-Pace. In today’s SUV and crossover obsessed world, the F-Pace is already the brand’s best seller, and if history and the Porsche Cayenne is any indication, it’ll hopefully help finance the sort of lust-worthy but low-volume cars we all love so much. In the meantime, we’ll be finding out what all those new Jag owners are getting themselves into.
What we got
Our particular F-Pace is very close to fully loaded. Outside, it’s coated in deep, vibrant Caesium Blue, a hue that was originally intended only for the F-Pace First Edition but popular demand made it more widely available. It’s accented with the “Black Package,” a $ 360 option, which swaps out shiny chrome trim on the grille, window surround and fender vents for gloss black pieces. We also added gloss black 20-inch wheels to match, a $ 1,020 option. For $ 410, we added a fifth one of those wheels in the trunk, too, since we opted for a full-size spare.
Our F-Pace’s sporty appearance is complemented by an athletic engine. The F-Pace S (starting price $ 60,770) comes with the most powerful engine currently available, a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 good for 380 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Like all F-Pace models, all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission are standard. Also, because this is the S model, our F-Pace has the ability to store a custom configuration for the steering and suspension.
Most of the options on our F-Pace are convenience items such as the $ 1,840 “Comfort and Convenience Package” that adds heated and cooled front seats, heated and power-reclining rear seats, remote levers for folding those seats, and a powered, hands-free-opening hatch. The $ 2,350 “Luxury Interior Package” adds configurable ambient lighting, four-zone climate control, a lockable and cooled glovebox, an air quality sensor, a pair of 12V power sockets in the rear, illuminated door sill plates, a suedecloth headliner and fancier floor mats. The “Driver Assistance Package” and “Technology Package” each cost $ 3,250 and provided us with Jaguar’s top-of-the-line Touch Pro infotainment system, Wi-Fi, a Meridian sound system, navigation, parking sensors, 360-degree cameras, and adaptive cruise control. Finally, we also chose the heated windshield and washer jets ($ 385), and the “Activity Key” wristband ($ 410) we tried out at last year’s Tech of the Year awards. Altogether, our options brought the price tag to $ 74,640.
What we skipped
As we mentioned, this F-Pace has nearly every option. The only ones we left out were the tow hitch, wheel locks, some cargo management trinkets and the head-up display. We’re not planning on towing anything during the F-Pace’s stay, we hope no one’s going to jack our wheels (knock on wood), and we don’t expect to have much issue keeping our cargo in place. The head-up display would be nice, but Jaguar’s isn’t the most pleasant to look at, so we’re not missing out on too much.
Why we got it
There are few reasons for this. First of course is that it’s Jaguar’s best-selling vehicle and it’s important to see how it will perform over an extended period of time. Plus, since it’s based on the same platform as the XE, we’re curious to see how it compares to the little Jaguar sedan. That XE diesel is also the impetus behind choosing the F-Pace S with the supercharged V6. We’ve spent six months with Jaguar’s most fuel efficient and least powerful engine, so we want to see how a more potent powerplant fares.
Questions
We’ve got the car for a while, so we’ll have plenty of time to answer any questions you have. Feel free to ask in the comments.

Just a few years ago, the idea of Jaguar selling a diesel-powered SUV in the United States would have seemed about as unlikely as Russian interference in an American election. But here we are in 2017, and much of Jaguar’s lineup in the States is now offered with a compression-ignition four-cylinder engine, including the new F-Pace crossover. READ MORE ››
