Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?

This week we look at an Oscar contender from the desert, watch a different kind of food show from the guy who made a mint off of Everyone Loves Raymond, have our third eye melted, try not to be a total creeper, and host one of the best shorts I’ve seen this year.

Somebody Feed Phil Trailer

This trailer will not be shortlisted on anyone’s Best Of list.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed Phil Rosenthal’s I’ll Have What Phil’s Having in ways that make this new series a must-watch for me. At the heart of what makes Phil such an engaging guy to watch about food is that he is the very antithesis of your Bourdain’s, your Zimmern’s, your Flavor Town Fieri’s. It’s so casual that it’s alarming just how Joe Schmoe Phil is about the various places he’s gone in the world to grab a bite and this trailer echoes exactly what made his series a gem.

Entanglement  Trailer

I don’t think Thomas Middleditch has any other speed.

If what made Silicon Valley so snackable for you when it came to Richard Hendricks’ personality quirks then director Jason James latest is for you. At first I was thinking this was yet more of the same from Thomas but, I cannot tell a lie, I genuinely liked this trailer. It moved effortlessly, is edited quite nicely, gives you the Cliff’s Notes of what has gathered us all here today, and establishes good reasons why it deserves your attention. Even though those Verizon commercials, for me, are chipping away at the fondness I have for the guy’s awkwardness this is a good example of how to leverage what brought you to the dance.

Foxtrot Trailer

Yes please.

Director Samuel Maoz has made a splash in not only getting a film like this made but in having it be good enough to be put in the running for an Oscar next year. What’s most enjoyable about this is that while I don’t completely understand the narrative it has so much charm going for it. Where you think it’s going to wallow in negativity and moroseness it flips the script as we head towards the end by being ebullient and full of life. The use of pull-quotes, without question, only help to boost this film’s chances to getting more people to stop for a moment. It’s a crowded field and, this time of year, it’s tough to get any kind of attention. Hopefully this helps.

Like Me Trailer

Peep this:

A reckless loner sets out on a crime spree that she broadcasts on social media. After releasing a video of herself robbing a convenience store, she amasses a huge following. While traveling along the coast, she encounters a drifter, an Internet troll, and a paint huffing outsider who are all pulled into her circle of chaos, junk food, and drugs.

If you’re a fan of The House of the Devil and Compliance then, hopefully, the producers behind that have a new yarn it wants to unfurl. Director Robert Mockler has something interesting to say here, visually. What I like most is that it’s playing with the medium in ways that at least feel fresh on the surface. Now, it could end up being not as engaging as it purport itself to be but this trailer is hypnotic and entrancing, if nothing else. The way these disparate images mesh and collide without seeming to possess anything in common is a risky proposition but I’m a fan.

 

TWISTED Short

Obviously not a trailer but since it’s the holiday weekend and I’m sure you have plenty of room in your schedule to spare 15 minutes you must check out the latest from director Jay Cheel.

Cheel directed the fantastically engaging Beauty Day and How to Build a Time Machine but he’s back with a short film that, on the surface, seems about one thing but becomes about something else entirely by the end. Short form film, books, television, anything, done well can show you how talented someone is at being concise yet having a powerful impact. Cheel excels at delivering a fully satisfying narrative that also communicates something fascinating about the human condition.

Comedy and tragedy are usually treated as two wildly different emotions – the Golden Globes even consider them so different as to break up their film awards into two tracks on those lines. But for a writer/director like Samuel Maoz, the dichotomy is not so clear-cut. His new film Foxtrot, the stealth sensation of 2017’s fall festival season, evinces how these two experiences are not opposites, but rather two sides of the same coin. Maoz, in just his second narrative feature, repeatedly demonstrates the way hilarity and calamity are never far removed from one another. Just one break in the other direction can produce a wild twist of fate.

With the absurdist deadpan of Swedish master Roy Andersson, Foxtrot captures a unique look at how young men respond to both the banality and boredom of war, as well as how adults absorb the trauma of death. It’s best to let the strange whims of life in the film guide the viewing journey; go in as blind as possible. As he charts the impact of a calamitous development, Maoz responds to a full range of human reactions. They’re never treated as separate gears to operate. Instead, pain and humor are complementary forces that overlap and bleed into each other.

Take, for example, an earnest suggestion given to Michael Feldmann (Lior Ashkenazi) after receiving some bad news: drink a glass of water every hour. The soldiers delivering this message stand by to make sure he gets the necessary hydration, then program his phone with a reminder every 60 minutes. It’s the kind of thing that seems a little strange in the moment, but it comes full circle when the alarm starts going off in later scenes, each time becoming funnier and pettier against the graver problems the characters must face.

Foxtrot also a lengthy monologue delivered by Michael’s son Jonathan (Yonaton Shiray) to his fellow soldiers that takes a similarly yo-yo approach to its emotional trajectory. As he details the touching journey of a family artifact through the Holocaust, the story quickly takes a childish, irreverent turn that will elicit gasps and laughs in equal measure. And then, as he brings his spiel to a close, it returns to that same tender territory of sincerity.

This broad spectrum never seems to intimidate Maoz in the slightest. Foxtrot provides that rare feeling of total reassurance that what’s on screen is the product of a true master. We’re seeing what he wants us to see, but more importantly, feeling what he wants us to feel. Every composition lines up with the utmost precision, although Maoz has more in mind than just #OnePerfectShot style fetishized aesthetic. The fine details are everywhere in the film, from the sound design of ripping off a band-aid’s adhesive to minutiae of how young soldiers occupy their copious downtime along a traffic checkpoint. As Maoz makes his larger statements, it’s reassuring to also see his grounding in the reality of this world.

Maoz’s shot of choice in Foxtrot is the bird’s eye view, an angle that’s traditionally credited with putting the filmmaker (and thus the audience, by extension) in a privileged position over the characters. From a viewpoint only possible to a deity, the figures on screen shrink to resemble something like figures in a dollhouse. To the director’s credit, Foxtrot somehow avoids feeling diminutive from this vantage point – or any, for that matter. Their best laid plans might go down the drain, there’s never any sense that he laughs at them or revels in their pain. As subjected as they all are to the vagaries of a fickle and bitterly ironic universe, Maoz always gives voice to the cries of his characters. They exist as more than just instruments to prove his thesis, which elevates Foxtrot beyond a mere discussion of ideas. The film embodies them, allowing them to resonate and register on the most profoundly human of levels.

You Were Never Really Here Trailer

It’s The Professional for a new generation.

One of the things that stands out in director Lynne Ramsay’s trailer for a film that looks like pure bananas is just how hypnotic it is. I mean, kudos for the Svengali who diced this trailer to not only slip in a pull-quote to rope you in but also throws in a good amount of narrative while also spinning your head right around with its visuals and music. At exactly a minute in and the beat starts going there is no other floor this elevator is going but straight downward. Fast. Disparate moments, a shaky grip on exactly where this is all going, I’m breathless by the time this is over. I need to see this right away.

Long Shot Trailer

I know you all like true crime stories.

One of the things that is just making Netflix the juggernaut in showing what original content really looks like is that they’re throwing all kinds of darts at the wall. Scripted, animated, nonfiction, long form, short form, they’re not going to be pinned down by any one thing and this looks like fascinating viewing. And, what makes director Jacob Lamendola’s story about a guy who is wrongly convicted of a crime he didn’t commit so interesting is that Larry David is the conduit through which he can prove his innocence. As nutty as the story is this is just the right kind of bite-sized storytelling that can keep a subscriber like me engaged and swimming in Netflix’ content pool.

Life and Nothing More Trailer

Docufiction.

I fully embrace that word to describe what I’m seeing in this trailer. Director Antonio Méndez Esparza’s technique here of shooting this story as if it were real feels very, well, real. Not only was it shot on film but using first-time actors puts on a delicious layer on top of this trailer cake because what you end up with is an extremely opposite version of the uncanny valley in that things here have a patina of realism coated all over it. I’m engaged with the story and where we’re going and not once do I question where we’re going or headed because it doesn’t feel like a story that needs to go in a certain direction. I’m along for the ride, wherever we’re going, and I’m just enjoying the journey. At times it’s just tough to watch and I cannot think of a bigger compliment than to be moved within a matter of seconds simply based on a moment we’re given with no context.

Brimstone & Glory Trailer

Are there any OSHA regulations for scaling a rickety wooden tower that’s laden with small explosives?

Look, I’m just going to straight up say that this is like porn to a 13 year-old me when I was obsessed with fireworks. Who’s kidding who, I would drool over a gross of bottle rockets (with report, of course) and would love to set off Black Cats every night of the week. Screw your mortars or your M-80’s, there’s a beauty in the small snaps, pops, whistles, or inherent naughtiness when you chase your dumb buddies around with a roman candle pointed at their back as they flee for safety. This trailer straight up embodies that beauty in how gorgeous the process of creating and deploying a fireworks display actually is but, in addition to that, the participatory element is something to marvel at as well. It’s downright moving to see people dancing in a literal shower of sparks and I cannot be more amped about a documentary that will explore this story in its entirety. Director Viktor Jakovleski has a thing of a beauty to share and I will consume it.

Kill Me Please Trailer

Lurid horror, high school sex comedy? Done and done, m’man.

Director Anita Rocha da Silveira certainly knows her wheelhouse as this movie screams out to be seen with a group if for no other reason than to enjoy the vibrant direction da Silveira is taking with a story that seems truly bizarre. Hell, even by the end of this thing I’m not really sure which way is up but there is some strange things afoot with this gaggle of teenagers. Like every good teen slasher movie there ought to be something deeper at play within the narrative and I think the trailer does just enough to telegraph that there is more to this than just a maniac on the loose, murdering young people.

And the award for best use of a trailer to show absolutely nothing about a movie’s plot and just letting a moment be their calling card goes to Foxtrot. And I’ll be damned if I didn’t sit through this whole thing, smiling as I watched it.
