Ram has gone with ultra-mild hybrid technology, and Ford has gone with turbocharged V6 engines, a new diesel, and a 10-speed transmission. Until now, it appeared Chevy and GMC were going to focus on improving naturally aspirated V8s and adding a diesel. But it turns out Chevy had one other engine up its sleeve: a turbocharged four-cylinder.

Displacing just 2.7 liters, it is the smallest engine available on the 2019 Silverado – 300 cc less than the turbodiesel engine that’s also coming. But don’t let the size fool you. This new four-cylinder has specs that outperform the effectively carryover 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V6. At 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque, the inline-four has a 25 horse and 43 pound-foot advantage over the V6. And while exact fuel economy numbers have yet to be released, Chevy says the turbo engine will be more efficient than the V6. On top of all that, the four-cylinder also boasts a peak torque plateau between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm, while peak power comes at 5,600 rpm.

Chevy put a lot of work and some fascinating technology into this engine to get these numbers. First off, the company claims that this engine is completely new; not a modified version of an existing turbocharged GM four-cylinder. It was built from the ground up as a truck engine. Like some of its larger brethren, it also features cylinder deactivation, and it can shut off two of its cylinders, made possible by a nifty variable cam lift feature.

The camshafts themselves can slide in order to select different cam profiles, and all of the cylinders can run in a high-lift setting for maximum power, or they can shift to a low-lift setting for improved fuel economy under reduced load. There’s also a third setting that will shut off valves to two cylinders while keeping two others in low-lift mode for maximum fuel economy at cruising speeds.

In addition to the trick camshafts, Chevy did a bit of fiddling with the turbo and the cooling system. Chevy is now among many companies employing exhaust manifolds integrated into the head, which allows Chevy to provide additional cooling to the exhaust close to the turbo. This also helps warm up the engine more quickly at start-up.

Getting back to the turbocharger, it features an evolution of the twin-scroll design, but instead of the exhaust pulses coming to the impeller side-by-side on one end of the impeller, they come in on opposite sides of the impeller wheel, as shown in the diagram above. So instead of one set of pulses hitting the outside of the impeller, and another hitting the inside, both sets are catching the outside of the impeller. Bolted to the turbo is an electric wastegate, which can open at cruising speeds and let exhaust flow more freely, improving cruising fuel economy.

Now that we’ve made it through all this tech talk, the big question is, is the four-cylinder any good? And we can give you an answer because we were given a chance to drive a prototype back-to-back with a current V6 model for comparison. And in general, it’s a big improvement. The low-down torque is very noticeable, helping it take off with more authority than the old V6 model. The turbo spools up very quickly and there’s hardly any lag when hitting the gas. Odds are any delay you might feel is coming from the transmission, which is an 8-speed automatic for reference. That automatic transmission has some neat features, too, but we’ll dig deeper into that in the eight-cylinder prototype drive.

Not everything is perfect with the four-cylinder though. Our big complaint is that, well, it sounds like a four-cylinder, and it certainly doesn’t come close to the hearty burble of the V8s. In fact, when really worked, it starts to get a bit coarse and buzzy. Thankfully, it does deliver good pulling power even as you’re working it, so it doesn’t feel strained. And it always seems to pull harder and rev more readily than the lazy old V6.

If you want to pick up a four-cylinder for yourself, it’s only offered on LT and RST trims as the standard engine, taking the place of the V6. Those trims can also be had with the optional 5.3-liter V8 with Chevy’s new cylinder deactivation system that can shut off as many as seven cylinders, or the new 3.0-liter turbodiesel. The LT Trail Boss is only available with the 5.3-liter engine. The entry-level Work Truck and Classic trims still come standard with the 4.3-liter V6, and their optional engine is the 5.3-liter V8 that can only shut off four cylinders. Classic Trail Boss is only available with that V8. The top-end LTZ and High Country come with the fancy 5.3-liter V8 standard with options in the form of the 6.2-liter V8 and turbodiesel. Pricing and fuel economy of all these trucks will be announced later this year, closer to when the trucks go on sale.

In Chevrolet parlance, RS typically stands for Rallye Sport and is applied to sporty-looking (if not actually sporty) trim packages. As applied to the 2018 Traverse, RS means you get blacked-out exterior trim and wheels, a few choice option packages—and the lineup’s sole four-cylinder engine. Every other Traverse is powered by a V-6.

The only practical downside to the four-cylinder RS—on paper, at least—is that, unlike the V-6, it can’t be paired with all-wheel drive. The 2.0-liter turbo four thus directs its 257 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission to the Traverse’s front wheels. The V-6’s 310 ponies have the four-cylinder beat, but the turbo four’s torque has the six licked by 29 lb-ft, although that peak arrives at a slightly higher engine speed.

2018 Chevrolet Traverse RS

We suspect the RS won’t accelerate with quite the same gusto as the six-cylinder Traverses we’ve tested—the front-drive model hit 60 mph in a quick 6.3 seconds, the all-wheel-drive version in 6.5—although around town the RS might feel gutsier thanks to its torque advantage.

As you might expect, the four-cylinder Traverse nabs the highest EPA-estimated combined fuel-economy figure in the lineup: 22 mpg, better than the front-drive V-6’s 21 and the all-wheel-drive V-6’s 20 mpg. The four-cylinder Traverse’s 20-mpg city estimate also betters its siblings’ 18- and 17-mpg estimates, even though, curiously, its 26-mpg highway rating is 1 mpg shy of the front-drive V-6’s and only 1 mpg better than the all-wheel-drive V-6’s.

Standard equipment is generous and includes the Convenience and Driver Confidence package that is optional on the less expensive Traverse LT. It adds heated front seats, an 8.0-inch touchscreen in place of a 7.0-inch unit, remote engine starting, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Other goodies include leather (in the first two rows only), three-zone automatic climate control, and a 360-degree parking camera. The price of the Traverse LT is $ 43,490, which represents a $ 900 premium over the similarly equipped six-cylinder, front-wheel-drive Traverse LT. Strangely, customers can outfit a V-6 Traverse to impersonate an RS by way of the $ 575 Black Accent package and $ 1495 black-painted 20-inch wheels, bringing the LT’s price to $ 45,160. So, if you’re a fan of mild fuel-economy improvements, black-colored exterior trim, and well-equipped three-row crossovers and don’t need all-wheel drive, the RS could be for you.

Whenever we drive a Jaguar F-type, the British two-seater provokes a visceral reaction. We swoon over the exterior, chuckle at the crackling exhaust, and get a rush from the driving experience. But for 2018, Jaguar is putting a four-cylinder engine into its sports car, and that may muddle some of those warm feelings.

–

In the F-type, Jaguar has tweaked its Ingenium 2.0-liter turbo four to make 296 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm. That’s 56 horses and 44 lb-ft more than what this four-banger turns out in the XE and XF sedans (with peak torque arriving 250 rpm sooner). That’s also startlingly near the base 3.0-liter supercharged V-6, which makes 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft. Paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the F-type four-cylinder hits a factory-estimated zero-to-60-mph time of 5.4 seconds, a tenth quicker than the manual six-cylinder.

2018 Jaguar F-type

Although the aluminum-bodied F-type is heftier than it appears, the four-cylinder version trims a claimed 114 pounds compared with the base V-6 automatic. The coupe’s factory-stated 3360-pound curb weight lets Jaguar reduce front spring rates by 4 percent and the rears by 3 percent. Weight distribution shifts rearward by one percentage point, to 47/53. Brake-actuated torque vectoring, formerly reserved for all-wheel-drive S and R models, is included as well. From the outside, a single trapezoidal exhaust is this engine’s only giveaway.

The 2018 F-type four-cylinder slashes a further $ 1410 off the base coupe ($ 60,985) and $ 2400 off the base convertible ($ 63,995). LED headlights and Jaguar’s quick-reacting but very buggy InControl Touch Pro infotainment system are now standard, and the base cars lose the 12-speaker Meridian stereo and instead make do with a less powerful 10-speaker unit.

Elsewhere, prices rise. What used to be called the F-type Premium—the 340-hp version of the coupe equipped with the panoramic glass roof, 14-way power seats, and other extras—is now $ 1200 more than a comparable 2017 model. Those models range from $ 68,995 for a manual coupe to $ 73,395 for an automatic convertible. The 380-hp S loses its name,  along with the red and green badge and the manual transmission. With the now standard automatic, it’s $ 700 less, while the all-wheel-drive version is $ 3700 less than before; that car now costs $ 83,895 to start.

2018 Jaguar F-type

You’ll need to order the new R-Dynamic model to pair the manual with the uprated V-6. The R-Dynamic also brings 20-inch gray wheels, body-color moldings, and gloss-black trim. It’s priced from $ 82,195 for a rear-wheel-drive manual coupe to $ 89,595 for an all-wheel-drive automatic convertible.

We’ve previously detailed the one-year-only 400 Sport. It is priced ranging from $ 90,495 for a rear-drive coupe to $ 96,595 for the AWD convertible, both exclusively with the automatic and a 400-hp V-6. The 550-hp R and the 575-hp SVR see prices cut between $ 3800 and $ 5250. The SVR’s Siena Tan leather and carbon-fiber interior trim are now optional across the F-type range, while new air inlets on the front fascia and darker taillights fuss with an otherwise flawless design.

We’ll reserve judgment on the four-cylinder F-type until we push the start button, at which point we may react as we do when we drive the V-6 and V-8 models. As the Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster have proved, a high-output turbocharged four can make for an exciting sports car. We hope that’s what Jaguar has created here, rather than just a less expensive one.
