The TV historian returns to screens tonight on the BBC show Blitz Spirit With Lucy Worsley, which explores World War 2 through six survivors’ accounts. The 47-year-old has delved into the deep crevices of the past to unearth little-known information and, at times, dispel historic mistruths. In one account, Worsley sought to show the connection between Brexit and actions under Henry VIII. Worsley described the 16th-century monarch as “fancying himself” as a King Arthur-figure of that time. She explained that he was “quite happy” to blend the truth “with colourful myth-making from back in the mists of time” to back his claims. The TV star argued that Henry had “an extraordinary gift” for believing in things that “just happened to be to his advantage”. She cited his decision to “drive a wedge between England and the rest of protestant Europe” by adopting a different form of Christianity. Lucy Worsley’s documentary found links between King Henry VIII and the modern day Brexit debate (Image: GETTY / BBC) Lucy Worsley and Professor Adam Pabst debated the Brexit link to King Henry VIII (Image: BBC) That time period, which lasted for eight years until 1537, was known as the Reformation. The King, who notoriously tied the knot six times during his 38-year reign until 1547, was furious after the Catholic Church refused to dissolve his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and allow him to remarry. Worsley investigated additional reasons that influenced the monarch to break away from not only the religion but Europe too. In an episode of Royal History’s Biggest Fibs last year, the documentary argued that the Pope had “diplomatic and economic powers” over the nation. JUST IN: Nick Knowles called to ‘mend damaged nation’ after Brexit vote Blitz Spirit With Lucy Worsley, which analyses World War 2, airs on BBC tonight (Image: GETTY) The BBC show stated: “[Chief Minister Thomas] Cromwell’s actions gave Henry the power he craved but also left him isolated, rejecting Rome wasn’t only a religious matter.” Worsley asked Professor Adrian Pabst, of Kent University, about the connection between “people talking negatively about the EU” and Henry’s mission. She continued: “Those acts that Henry and Cromwell set up [said], ‘England is exceptional, it stands alone. It’s an empire, entirely self-contained.’” Prof Pabst “undoubtedly” believed there was a link due to the “natural disconnect” between the UK and Europe – due to our geographical positioning. DON’T MISS Express.co.uk list five of the key moments that led to the vote for Brexit in 2016 (Image: EXPRESS) He said: “I think there is this idea that when you’re an island… you are very special and your fate and destiny lie elsewhere. “Clearly, that is what the Reformation and I think people having this sort of discourse today have in common.” Prof Pabst argued that both decisions argued there was “only one source of legitimacy”, which was “the nation being represented by the monarchy”. He continued: “That really changed the relationship hugely to other countries, to the papacy, [and] to institutions across the world. Lucy Worsley’s show documented scepticism of the Continent’s power before Brexit in Henry VIII’s era (Image: GETTY) “Because you’re essentially saying the individual has rights – his or her individual rights. “Plus the state essentially guarantees them and nothing mediates that relationship anymore.” Prof Pabst described “the most striking parallel” between the Reformation and Brexit was “this idea that we are better off on our own”. He continued: “We’re better off out and essentially national sovereignty and the will of the people should prevail over anything else.” During the Reformation, Prof Pabst claimed the narrative was about the Catholic Church “being decadent, being over-centralised and not really being to our benefit”. In relation to the 2016 EU Referendum, in which 52 percent of the nation voted to leave the bloc, he felt there were similar complaints. Prof Pabst believed Brexiteers were concerned about the EU “being undemocratic, potentially authoritarian and sort of riding roughshod over what people really need and want”. He argued that Henry’s actions in the 16th century laid “deep roots” within the nation that Britain was better on its own. Prof Pabst felt that the Reformation “reinforced” that idea and cast doubt on “Britain as part of a wider European continent”. He added: “I think that’s where EU scepticism has its deep roots in the Reformation.” Lucy Worsley is a historian who has produced a number of documentaries for the BBC (Image: GETTY) Worsley appeared surprised by the claims and remarked that “it all happened in the 1530s”. She added: “That’s when a lot of these seeds were planted that are still shooting up to the sky today.” Prof Pabst replied: “If you’re looking for the origins of Brexit, look no further than Henry VIII.” A short extract of the BBC show, which was posted on Facebook in February last year, drew a positive response from viewers. One commenter wrote that they “quite enjoyed it”, while others gushed praise for Worsley, including one that read: “Love Lucy.” Blitz Spirit With Lucy Worsely airs at 8.30pm tonight on BBC One.Reformation: Expert draws parallels with Brexit Britain

Coles James served during the George W. Bush administration as the director of the Office of Personnel Management. She began serving on the board of trustees for the Heritage Foundation in 2005, and became the president in 2017. In September, the White House named her to the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission. I recently spoke to Coles James about growing up in a “dysfunctional family,” her experience at Hampton University, and serving as the first black woman president of the Heritage Foundation. This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.
Lola Fadulu: Could you tell me a little bit about your parents’ work background, what jobs they were doing when you were growing up?
Kay Coles James: I came from what would be called today a dysfunctional family. My father did odd jobs. He was a guard. He worked unloading ships when he was younger. He did maintenance work. My mother was a dental tech for part of her life, working for her brother-in-law, and the rest of the time she was a domestic, cleaning houses and caring for people. So they were hard-working folks, but not with steady jobs or glamorous careers by any stretch of the imagination.
Fadulu: Did they have a specific profession that they wanted you to go into?
Coles James: I was the only girl out of five boys, and I think they were more interested in making sure that I had a good, solid education because with that, there would be lots of opportunities to do any number of things. My father left home when I was around 4 years old, and I ended up being raised by my aunt and uncle. They were professional people. He was a businessman, and she was a schoolteacher, but she suffered under the debilitating disease of alcoholism. And as a result of that, even as a young child, I had to learn to be self-sufficient and independent around the house.
So I learned domestic skills rather early: I could cook and clean and care for not only myself, but at a very early age took care of my aunt as well.
Fadulu: Did you have any jobs outside of the home before going to college?
Coles James: Not very much before college. I can tell you that being raised by an African American schoolteacher, even though she was a working alcoholic, she had all the values of a middle-class schoolteacher, and education was key. And my uncle, who was sort of the rock of the family, was very adamant about the fact that I was to get a good-quality education, and he felt that once that was done, then his task was done in that he would have equipped me for life.
[Read: The wisdom of going back to school in retirement]
So when I went off to college, he said, “No, you don’t have to work. No jobs, get your education, get that done and don’t get married. Don’t get serious about any guys. Focus.” Education was key. I grew up hearing about the United Negro College Fund. The slogan, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” I think I had my first job outside the home when I was in college, and I went to work for the Richmond public schools as an assistant for a summer reading program, where I was doing clerical work. When you are in college and you’re doing that kind of work, your job is pretty much to do everything in the office that nobody else wants to. And that’s what I did.
Fadulu: How did you cope with that?
Coles James: I didn’t expect to come in and be the manager or the supervisor or run the company initially. I expected to pay my dues. I expected to learn from the folks who were there and more experienced and older than I was. I expected to have a work ethic. The way I was brought up is, you get there early, you leave last, you do the best job possible, and all the doors will be opened for you. So for me, it wasn’t very much about coping. Those were the values that I was raised with. That was what I expected. And I heard every inspirational phrase one could hear in that kind of environment: The cream always rises to the top. The early bird catches the worm. Work hard and it’ll pay off in the end. Those were the things that were whispered in my ear from the time I was young. And so I grew up with those values and with that ethic.
Fadulu: I know that you went to Hampton. Were you considering other schools?
Coles James: I was considering other schools at that time. But I had had lots of incredible experience integrating the schools in the city of Richmond and had been through so much in the largely all-white environments that I really felt like I wanted the nurturing, caring environment of a historically black college and university, where I did not stand out as different, where I knew that the professors and instructors had my best interests in mind and at heart. They were committed to my education, and I think by the time I finished at Chandler Junior High School and John Marshall High School, I was ready for that environment. So while I had the opportunity to go to other colleges and universities, I specifically chose Hampton University because it was an HBCU and I wanted that environment.
I wanted to not be one of the two or three black kids in one class; I wanted to experience the rich culture and history and heritage, and I’m grateful for it. It came at a time in my life where I needed that.
Fadulu: Is there anything that you wish college prepared you for in your first jobs after college or your career in general?
Coles James: Well, if you know anything about Hampton University, you know that their motto is “Education for life.” And so at Hampton, not only did we get the academic skills that we needed and the knowledge, but we also got the other training that I think was so helpful for the first job. Hampton was then and probably still is now very strict about dress codes and about demeanor—about how you carry yourself on campus, how you carry yourself in the classroom—which can then translate into a work environment. And quite frankly, I’m not sure I would have gotten as much of that if I had gone to a predominantly white institution.
I think even with my middle-class upbringing, it was good to have those values reinforced, and they have served me well in a work environment. So the education for life that I received at Hampton University was truly that. It was an education for life.
Fadulu: And what was your major?
Coles James: History, secondary education. I studied history, and then [became] involved in public policy and government and watching history unfold before my very eyes.
Fadulu: To fast-forward to your time as director of the Office of Personnel Management, are there any experiences that are memorable to you from that time that maybe changed the way you view work and yourself as a worker?
Coles James: Well, I must confess that I, like everyone else who was around during that period in our country’s history, was affected in all kinds of ways by 9/11. I was the director of the Office of Personnel Management on 9/11. And on that particular day, I think every bit of knowledge, every bit of skill, every experience that I had, had to come together for quick decisions, for processing information, for inspiring a workforce, for coming together after that to figure out a pathway forward for our country. Being a part of standing up the Department of Homeland Security. And so I think every experience that I had had, and every bit of the education that I had, came together, and it was a seminal moment, I think, that changed me, and I think everyone else who was involved, for life.
Fadulu: You’ve served on the board of trustees for the Heritage Foundation since 2005, so you were already familiar with the organization. How did you feel when you found out that you were going to become president of the foundation?
Coles James: You may or may not know that I was actually chairing the search committee, and as we developed the profile of what the ideal candidate would look like, as we developed the document that talked about the culture of the Heritage Foundation and what was needed in order to preserve and grow that organization, it became clear to several of our trustees that perhaps the person they were looking for was sitting at the table. In my mind I was headed towards retirement, and I was looking forward to watching I Love Lucy reruns and researching ancestry.com, and writing my final book. So when given the opportunity, and it was a very humbling experience, I felt that the stars were perfectly aligned.
I did have a background in public policy, had been the dean of a school of government. I did have the business experience to run a multimillion-dollar institution. I did have the knowledge of government, based on having served at the federal, state, and local levels. And I did have a love for the mission and vision and values of the institution, and as a result of that, when presented with the opportunity, I thought it was an opportunity of a lifetime. I am one of the people that has had the opportunity to do work worth doing, work that I feel passionately about and feel very equipped to do. And not everybody gets that opportunity.
Fadulu: Is there anything that has particularly surprised you about being the president of the foundation?
Coles James: There have been very few surprises as I took over the role of president at the Heritage Foundation. Probably the elephant in the room is an African American female being president of the leading conservative organization in America. I am absolutely convinced that it was a total afterthought. Having been a part of the process, sometimes we just stumble upon the right thing, and I think we did.

More than a dozen FBI agents searched for six hours the house of a contractor who had given Congress and the DOJ documents about the Clinton Foundation and the Uranium One scandal, implicating then-FBI director Robert Mueller.
Sixteen agents showed up at the Maryland home of Dennis Nathan Cain on November 19, the Daily Caller reported this week, citing Cain’s attorney Michael Socarras. They demanded to see the documents Cain had already turned over to the Department of Justice inspector-general and the House and Senate intelligence committee.
“I cannot believe the Bureau informed the federal magistrate who approved the search warrant that they wanted to search the home of an FBI whistleblower to seize the information that he confidentially disclosed to the IG and Congress,” said Socarras. He also objected to the fact that the FBI at no point reached out to him, even though Cain provided the agents with his contact information, calling that “serious misconduct.”
Many are missing why this is so chilling.
The FBI raided the Clinton Foundation whistleblower’s home to recover the damning info on Mueller and the Clintons so that it wasn’t out there in the public domain.
Copies had already been provided to DOJ. https://t.co/YgTNYIOWpJ
— John Cardillo (@johncardillo) November 30, 2018
FBI spokesman Dave Fitz confirmed to the Daily Caller that the bureau had conducted “court authorized law enforcement activity,” declining to comment further.
The search warrant, signed by federal magistrate Stephanie A. Gallagher in the US District Court for Baltimore, said that Cain possessed “stolen federal property.”
Cain informed the agents that he was a federally protected whistleblower, but gave them the documents at their insistence, Socarras said. Even so, they searched his house for hours afterward.
So, yes, to repeat:
The FBI raided the home of a whistleblower, who not only has information on the Clinton Foundation,
but also on Mueller regarding Uranium One. #ClintonFoundation
— #ThePersistence (@ScottPresler) November 30, 2018
What were the agents looking for? According to the Daily Caller, they were after the document suggesting that Robert Mueller – now special counsel in charge of the “Russiagate” probe targeting President Donald Trump, but FBI director back in 2001-2013 – failed to investigate allegations of criminal misconduct in the case of Uranium One.
The Canadian-based mining company controls over 20 percent of the US uranium supply, and was sold to the Russian conglomerate Rosatom in 2010. The sale needed to be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CIFUS), which was chaired by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

FBI documents detail Clinton and Mueller’s own ‘Russiagate’ – but they’re classified
Since then, multiple whistleblowers have revealed claims of misconduct, bribery and fraud on part of the people involved in the sale, even suggesting a “pay for play” scheme in which the Clinton Foundation received millions of dollars in donations in exchange for greenlighting the deal. Republicans have also pointed to Bill Clinton’s $ 500,000 fee for a speech in Moscow in 2010 as evidence the Clintons were peddling influence for Russian money.
Democrats have dismissed the apparent scandal as a right-wing conspiracy theory, and Clinton herself called the accusations of wrongdoing “baloney.”
In April this year, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked the Utah-based US Attorney John Huber to investigate both the Uranium One probe and the FBI investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server. That second probe was the subject of a scathing report in June by the DOJ IG Michael Horowitz, the same official to whom Cain gave the documents as a whistleblower. The status of that investigation is currently unknown.

Apple is moving forward with their previously-announced Foundation TV series. The Isaac Asimov adaptation has landed a 10-episode straight-to-series order for Apple’s fast-developing streaming service. Batman v Superman writer David S. Goyer and War of the Worlds writer Josh Friedman will serve as executive producers and showrunners on the series, which will try to turn Asimov’s complex saga into something cinematic.
Deadline confirms the news that Apple is making Foundation a reality. Asimov’s Foundation series is complex and sprawling, so let’s turn to the always-accurate Wikipedia for a breakdown on the basic story:
The premise of the series is that the mathematician Hari Seldon spent his life developing a branch of mathematics known as psychohistory, a concept of mathematical sociology. Using the laws of mass action, it can predict the future, but only on a large scale. Seldon foresees the imminent fall of the Galactic Empire, which encompasses the entire Milky Way, and a dark age lasting 30,000 years before a second great empire arises. Seldon’s calculations also show there is a way to limit this interregnum to just one thousand years. To ensure the more favorable outcome and reduce human misery during the intervening period, Seldon creates the Foundation – a group of talented artisans and engineers positioned at the twinned extreme ends of the galaxy – to preserve and expand on humanity’s collective knowledge, and thus become the foundation for the accelerated resurgence of this new galactic empire.
The journey from page to screen for Foundation has been long. New Line Cinema spent millions try to adapt the Foundation trilogy to the screen, but couldn’t quite crack it. Columbia Pictures and Sony then scooped up the rights in 2009, with hopes of having Independence Day director Roland Emmerich helm the adaptation. That fell through as well, and HBO acquired the rights in 2014. Jonathan Nolan came aboard to produce and write the series, but this version also never came to pass (Nolan would go off and make Westworld for HBO instead).
Now, here we are. In 2017, Skydance struck a deal with the Asimov estate for the rights, and hired Goyer and Friedman to make a Foundation TV series a reality. Apple got involved in April of this year, and have now gone ahead and given the show a straight-to-series order. But will it work? Asimov’s Foundation saga is iconic, and influential, but it’s also not inherently cinematic. Major changes will likely have to be made to make the series pop more for wider audiences.
No matter how it turns out, Foundation looks to be yet another ambitious project for Apple as they develop their streaming service. The series joins other big projects like a thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, a sci-fi series from Ron Moore, a Time Bandits adaptation, several comedies, and more.

George Soros’ Open Society Foundation (OSF) is pulling out of Hungary after the introduction of tighter restrictions on non-governmental organisations in the country that have been dubbed the ‘Stop Soros Act.’
The OSF announced the move on Tuesday, blaming “an increasingly repressive political and legal environment.” The foundation, which is funded by Soros and supports civil society groups around the world, said it will continue to support its work in Hungary and channel funding to projects from it’s office in Berlin.
“The government of Hungary has denigrated and misrepresented our work and repressed civil society for the sake of political gain, using tactics unprecedented in the history of the European Union,” OSF president Patrick Gaspard said in a statement.

The retreat for OSF follows a landslide election victory for the right-wing Hungarian government led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Orban has been an outspoken critic of Soros and the activities of his foundation. The Prime Minister has accused him of meddling in the international affairs of countries and trying to flood the EU and Hungary with migrants. The government ran a poster campaign against Soros andsent a questionnaire about the billionaire to 8 million Hungarians.
Speaking after his election victory, Orban said: “I know they [the OSF] won’t accept the result of the election, they will organize all sorts of things, they have unlimited financial resources.”
The attacks on OSF, which the NGO says are unfounded, were a core element of Orban and his Fidez parties’ political campaign which saw them re-elected for a third term with almost 48% of votes.
Orban has increased his power over the media and put allies in control of institutions that were previously independent. He fell out with both Soros and the EU over the 2015 financial crisis and his stance on restricting immigration.
The Fidez party initiated the “Stop Soros Act” in February. It enables the interior minister to ban NGO’s working on immigration citing possible “national security risks.” It requires foreign-funded NGO’s, like OSF to pay 25 % tax.
Soros, born in Hungary and a Jewish survivor of World War II, is worth around $25 billion and is best known in the UK as “The Man who broke the Bank of England” after he bet big against the pound in 1992 and made more than $1 billion.
The Hungarian billionaire has faced attacks in recent months from populists and nationalists who denounce his support for liberal causes.
Soros attacked his critics in a January interview with the Financial Times, saying that the dominant ideology in the world now is nationalism. He added that he believed Putin was behind many of the attacks on him.
“It’s déjà vu all over again with one big change — the dominant ideology in the world now is nationalism,” said Soros. “It’s the EU that’s the institution that’s on the verge of a breakdown. And Russia is now the resurgent power, based on nationalism.”

As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg prepared to face nearly half of the Senate today to explain what went wrong with his company’s handling of personal data for millions of Facebook users, the Mozilla Foundation released a report that highlights the dangers posed to the entirety of the Internet ecosystem by the increasing concentration of control over how people experience the online world in the hands of companies like his.
Zuckerberg opened his remarks today by saying, “Facebook is an idealistic and optimistic company” and that he and others believed that the tools Facebook created were a force for good. “It’s clear now that we didn’t do enough to prevent those tools from being used for harm as well,” he admitted. The danger that Facebook executives overlooked, however, is described clearly by the Mozilla Foundation report.
Mozilla Foundation Executive Director Mark Surman explained the harm done by Facebook’s platform clearly in a blog post today, describing the process of creating the 2018 Internet Health Report. As he and foundation fellows were discussing how to examine the topic of “fake news,” he wrote, “I sketched out a list on a napkin to help order our thoughts:”
