Outlander viewers have witnessed the residents of the Starz and Amazon Prime Video show go through quite a lot. While Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) was sexually abused in season one at the hands of “Black Jack” Randall (Tobias Menzies). The unfortunate fate of the Frasers continued into season three, as Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) was also raped, but at the hands of Stephen Bonnet (Edward Speleers). Brianna’s ordeal caused ripples throughout the show’s storylines that are even still being felt in season five. Although Brianna seems to be coping well with her trauma at the moment, viewers have seen how she has struggled in the past. With so much going on in Brianna’s life, it would have been easy to drop the tougher aspects of her storyline as the seasons progress. But this isn’t something Brianna actor Sophie wanted to do. READ MORE: Outlander explained: Who knows Claire is from the future? Full list revealed Speaking to Gio Journal, he explained: “I’ve been working on the post-production of a TV show I produced/financed and directed last year. “We hope to have it air this year and it’s been a lot of fun. Also, a book deal, so I’m writing A LOT!” Addressing the pandemic and how he is coping within lockdown, Sam added: “I’m doing the best I can. “Trying to stay safe whilst lending my voice and support to charities etc. “Also want to entertain people and give them something else to think about. Bloodshot [Sam’s latest movie] was released during the pandemic.” Sam also mused on the affect of the pandemic, and how it has progressed over the past few months. He added: “I guess no one knew the level and extent of how this would affect us. Hopefully everyone can stay safe and positive at this time. It affects us all.” Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now. This article contains affiliate links, we may receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. Learn more The head coach of Canada's junior hockey team says his squad didn't have a "driver's mentality" when they began a battle with the Russians Monday night. "Foot on the gas, looking through the windshield and you're going after them, you're going after a win. We didn't play like that and that's how winners play," Tim Hunter said after Canada dropped a 2-1 decision to Russia. The coach said he knew Russia would be a challenging opponent and his group didn't play fast enough to scratch out a victory in the tough-fought game. "They're a good team. They compete hard," he said. "We kind of gave them a little bit of free time because we didn't play as good as we're capable." Watch highlights from Canada's tough loss to Russia: The loss was Canada's first at the world junior hockey championship and marked the end of its round-robin play. Russia (4-0-0-0) finished first in Group A while Canada (3-1-0-0) was second. Sweden topped Group B. Losing Monday's game was a lesson, Hunter said. "Tonight's the last rehearsal," he said. "Because next game, you don't have a gimme where you can lose a game and still move on." Florida Panthers prospect Grigori Denisenko put up Russia's first goal and Pavel Shen notched the game winner. "It was a good win and tough game, but it's just preliminary so we should forget about this game and think about future games," Shen said through a translator after the win. Playing in front of a hometown crowd in Vancouver added an extra challenge, Denisenko said. "When all fans are against you, booing at you, you hear all that so it makes our team more close and we are becoming like a family and it helps us to produce our best," he said through a translator. Cody Glass scored Canada's lone goal. "I think we just sat back and watched too much off the start," said Owen Tippett, who registered an assist on the play. "I think once we challenged the play more in the second period it was a different game." Vancouver Canucks prospect Michael DiPietro stopped 29-of-31 shots for the Canadians and Russia got 30 saves from the un-drafted Pyotr Kochetkov. "There were two good goaltenders on the ice. That's part of the game. We've got to find a way to get pucks in the net," said Canada's captain Maxime Comtois. DiPietro went into Monday's game having allowed a single goal at the juniors and boasting a .974 save percentage. Against the Russians, the Ottawa 67's goalie was forced to make some highlight reel-worthy stops, including on back-to-back breakaways in the third period. Hunter praised the 19-year-old's performance. "He played outstanding," the coach said. "A couple of breakaways late in the game, then some other saves he had to make. Thirty-one shots. We don't like to give up that many shots but we did. I thought he was outstanding." But the goaltender said both he and his teammates need to be better. "We hold ourselves at a higher standard and we strive for perfection each day," DiPietro said. Hunter's message after the game was motivating, DiPietro added. "[This game is] something we can build off and adversity is good for our group, especially heading into games that really count," he said. "Sometimes a little adversity will do a lot and really bring out what we are made of." All 10 teams in the tournament will have New Year's Day off before games resume on Wednesday. Russia will face Slovakia in the quarterfinals. Canada will play Finland, which lost Monday's late game 4-1 to the U.S. to finish in third place in Group B.

More evidence supporting the theory that faulty sensor data caused the crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX in October has emerged from the aircraft’s flight data recorder. A report released on November 28 by Indonesian crash investigators shows that the pilots of Lion Air Flight 610 fought with the aircraft’s maneuvering characteristics augmentation system, or MCAS, nearly from the moment the jet took off from Jakarta on October 29. And the aircraft had suffered from a similar problem on a flight from Bali to Jakarta the day before—a flight that was completed safely after the pilot shut down the 737 MAX’s automatic anti-stall system.
“In our view, the plane was not airworthy” during its previous flight, said Nurcahyo Utomo, head of Indonesia’s national transport safety committee (KNKT), in a press conference today in Jakarta. Utomo faulted Lion Air’s maintenance and safety culture in the crash, though a final finding on the cause of the crash is likely months away.
The 737 MAX lost in the crash had repeatedly had problems with its airspeed and angle of attack (AOA) sensors, both of which feed into the MCAS system. One of the AOA sensors on the lost aircraft was replaced after the problems on the flight from Bali to Jakarta the day before, and the plane was put back into service. The MCAS uses inputs from these sensors to detect if the aircraft is likely to stall—losing enough lift to stay airborne—and automatically adjust control surfaces. Those adjustments would push the nose of the aircraft down to increase the lift generated by the wings with a combination of improved air flow over the wings and increased airspeed.

Then came the backlash: As the newspaper continued to churn out stories about the country club incident, the majority of White-owned businesses that had been supporting the paper by running ads pulled their business, leaving the paper struggling to run the presses and pay staff. Managing director Ken Gordon, co-founder Vernon Charles and other senior management figures at the newspaper sat for hours in a brainstorming session at the paper’s offices, determined to come up with a way to ride out the boycott. It helped that the stories had driven circulation up, even as ad revenue fell.
“At that time a newspaper might have been selling for 25 cents,” Gordon says. “To produce that paper may have cost you a dollar or $ 1.20.” The traditional newspaper model mostly runs on ads, with the cost of the paper itself covering just a small portion of how much it costs to print it. But that wasn’t working anymore. “We were right up against the wall,” Gordon says. They decided to cut the paper to just 16 pages, paring operating costs as much as possible to ride out the controversy.

It worked. The Express’ Gordon and his friend Harold Hoyte at the Nation newspaper in Barbados would eventually become household names throughout the Caribbean as well as among journalists in the wider British Commonwealth for going toe-to-toe with the White establishment in their countries to launch Black-owned-and-operated media houses. Their newspapers would rapidly supplant legacy newspapers that had long controlled the media narrative in their countries. Gordon, in particular, used his skills and experience to strengthen other media houses around the region and their ability to operate as independent media houses and guardians of democracy.
There was this view that locals could write in a paper but they could not manage it. … And I took exception to that.
Ken Gordon, Trinidad Express
Gordon joined the Express as managing director in 1969, two years after it was founded. It was the heady era of Black militancy, which spread from the United States and began to make its presence felt in the Caribbean. It was also a time when young, middle-class Black men like Gordon and Hoyte wanted to make their mark and prove their prowess as entrepreneurs.
“There was this view that locals could write in a paper but they could not manage it. That was a popular view at the time. And I took exception to that,” Gordon says. So did Hoyte, and their shared vision led to a lifelong partnership.
When Gordon applied to work as an announcer at Radio Trinidad in the late 1940s, no Black Trinidadian had as yet ever been employed in such a position. The same day, the managing director’s secretary, who lived a few houses down from Gordon, invited him over to show him an ad from 10 years ago for the job he’d just landed. It said: “Announcer needed. Only Whites need apply.”
It was the Express’ coverage of the Dr. Hanna story and the Black Power movement of the early ’70s that led to boycotts of the paper by the White establishment. But that same coverage brought the Express its unprecedented success.
The establishment in Trinidad and Tobago at the time favored the Trinidad Guardian, a decades-old British-owned newspaper. Meanwhile, the Express came to be viewed by many in Trinidadian society as reflecting their own interests and reality. When the Express’ burgeoning circulation made it the undisputed leader among Trinidad and Tobago’s papers in the 1970s, advertisers who had formerly boycotted the newspaper eventually returned.
Prominent Trinidadian journalist Wesley Gibbings, who was the founding president of the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers, credits Gordon’s business acumen for the Express’ turnaround, noting that Gordon was a former Junior Chamber of Commerce president. “[It was a case of] the businessman becoming a defender of press freedom,” Gibbings says. “And as a media pioneer, his role is again virtually unparalleled in the region. His reach extended throughout the length and breadth of the Caribbean because he had this concern about building independent and democratic media.”

Today, the Express is part of a large media collective, One Caribbean Media, which resulted from a merger of newspapers and radio networks in Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. The business end has been successful, says Penn State University assistant professor Juliette Storr, a Bahamian and former journalist herself, but “especially since the merger in 2006 the focus has been more on the bottom line, [thus] forfeiting the public interest.”
Hoyte and Gordon became business colleagues in 1974, after Gordon learned about Hoyte’s efforts to replicate the Express’ success in Barbados with the Nation newspaper. Gordon helped the then-struggling Barbadian newspaper with his newspaper management expertise. The Nation went on to achieve such success that it was lauded by the prime minister as a beacon for Black businesses. Gordon also reached out to the Stabroek in Guyana and the Torchlight in Grenada when the papers came under government pressure, as well as publications in Jamaica, St. Lucia and Dominica, helping them achieve financial viability and success as media businesses.
“If we were going to be threatened by people who wanted to take charge of the press, we had to fight that not just in Trinidad but around the Caribbean,” says Gordon. “Otherwise, they would have picked us off one by one.”

The very existence of the modern Middle Eastern states have been “shaped by oil business,” Kneissl told the UNGA. A Middle East expert herself went on to explain that the borders of the states that were established following the breakdown of the Ottoman Empire were “based on pipelines.”
All the wars the region witnessed over the recent decades are just a continuation of this fight for the control over the fossil fuels that still “dominate the energy mix” in the world, the foreign minister said, adding that Syria, which has been engulfed in a bloody seven-years conflict, is “a victim of instability created by all these wars.”
This was the first time an Austrian top official made such statements at the level of the UN General Assembly.
Kneissl also surprised the gathering in New York as she started her speech in Arabic – a move she explained by her respect to the people, who fight for their lives in a region ravaged by wars. She switched to French, Spanish and English as well in the course of her statement.
She also criticized the international community and the UN in particular for losing real effectiveness behind the “flurry of meetings, which some diplomats turned into a comfortable endless game full of litanies and mantras.”
“We settle for these hackneyed arguments when we discuss Syria and Yemen. We get carried away with such words as reconstruction and stabilization while populations – children – are just trying to survive,” Kneissl said. Following these words, the foreign minister announced that Austria would like to “contribute to financing” the mine clearing operations in Syria.
Vienna is also “ready to increase its humanitarian commitment” to help the Yemeni people, Kneissl said as she called the Yemeni crisis, which is often neglected by the western media and officials, “the greatest tragedy of our time.”
In her speech, Kneissl also condemned the use of chemical and biological weapons as well as called for nuclear disarmament and urged the international community to do more to fight for the rights of women.
The foreign minister also criticized the US for its withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, even though she avoided calling Washington by name. While hailing the agreement itself as a “result of multilateral action” and a “subject to independent verification system” that should be preserved, she said that “one country’s” withdrawal from its “weakens the mutual trust” and disrupts measures aimed at “confidence building.”

“[Orban and I] fought against the quotas in Brussels, and we have abolished this absurd system,” Babis said.
Orban, a harsh critic of migration and mandatory migrant quotas, has repeatedly cast doubt on the validity of migrants’ humanitarian plight.
Speaking of illegal migrants, Babis stated that Prague “won’t accept a single refugee,” even if they are Syrian orphans. “Why should we accept [Syrian orphans]? We have orphans in our own country… I went into politics mainly to take care of Czech citizens,” he added.
He also recalled talking to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. “She asked me if we [Czech Republic] could take a few illegal migrants. I said we could not even take one,” he said, adding that his reply was “a symbolic attitude to the inability of the EU” to address the problem of migrants. Babis was apparently referring to his recent meeting with Merkel earlier in September.
In December 2017, the Czech Republic, along with Hungary and Poland, defended their “right” to reject EU-imposed refugee quotas amid pressure from the European Commission. Despite repeated EC warnings, the three countries continue to pursue a course of non-compliance, arguing that migrants pose a direct threat to public security.
Babis, who took the post back then, said that “the quotas divide Europe and they are not effective.”
The Czech PM has repeatedly criticized existing EU migration policies, and argued that European states must “unite” to come up with a viable solution to the crisis. Referring to the notorious standoffs between anti-migrant protesters and anti-fascists in the German city of Chemnitz, he said that Europe must fight for its culture and values in the face of the migration crisis.
“We don’t want to live in Africa or the Middle East here. We must fight for our values,” he said.

Star Wars has weathered some fan storms across the decades.
The low point occured around the time a certain Gun-gun emerged from the swamp, alongside midichlorians and the worst child actor this side of Naboo.
However, the fans never abandoned their beloved franchise, never lost faith. Until now.
A major section of the fandom (hardcore and otherwise) had rebelled over what they see as a betrayal of the central themes and aims of the triple trilogy, laying the blame firmly at the feet of Rian Johnson and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy.
Are they wrong?
Hollywood director James Magold helmed fan favourites like the recent Logan movie. He has also been linked to the expected Boba Fett Star Wars Anthology spin-off.
In a series of tweets he blasted fans for attacking directors who make bold but divisive decisions with existing franchise, although he appeared to agree that Johnson maybe should not have chosed the eighth film of a saga to rewrite the story.
Howver he also revealed that Johnson had fought many battles behnd the scenes, presumably with Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy.
Mangold tweeted: “If you feel that is the case, if you feel the film makers are just corporate tools and powerless, then why bitch at us? In the case of Rian Johnson… I assure you these cats are not “owned”. They actually fight your battles behind the scenes.”
Since the entite thread concerned fans who felt betrayed when film companies and directors made major changes to existing franchises, is Mangold saying that Johnson fought against some of the more drastic tonal and story shifts of The Last Jedi, but was over-ruled?
This seems hard to believe, since Episode 8 seems so completely Johnson’s vision and he has never given any indication otherwise, despite constant provocation.
The director and Lucasfilm have consistently closed ranks against the attacks from fans, centred on the basic theme that the past must die, along with the cherished memories and hopes of an entire generation of fans.
If they didn’t disagree over this, what, then were Johnson and Lucasfilm fighting over?

On Monday, cloud-based project management software company Smartsheet filed to go public — revealing that it’s paying one star ex-Amazon executive about 70% more than CEO Mark Mader.
Back in June 2017, Smartsheet hired Gene Farrell away from Amazon Web Services, where he had been a VP overseeing the cloud titan’s growing roster of business productivity apps. Amazon alleged that by joining Smartsheet, Farrell was in violation of a non-compete clause in his contract, and slapped him with a lawsuit.See the rest of the story at Business Insider
