Shopee, the Singapore-based ecommerce giant and one-time investment-community darling, is facing bleak fundraising prospects in the current volatile market — and it appears to be bracing for the worst.
In a 1,000-word memo sent to Shopee employees on September 15, Forrest Li — the billionaire founder, chairman, and CEO of Shopee — outlined drastic cost-cutting measures the company will be taking.
"Our number one objective for the next 12-18 months is achieving self-sufficiency," Li wrote in the memo. The company will be restricting employee expenses, capping all flights at the economy level, and executives will temporarily forgo compensation, Li wrote in the memo.
Shopee parent Sea Limited has lost around $ 170 billion of market value since an October 2021 high, per Bloomberg. This is in sharp contrast to Sea being able to secure $ 6 billion through an equity and convertible bond sale in September 2021, which at the time was Southeast Asia's largest fundraising round.
The layoffs will affect a low single-digit percentage of employees, a source close to the matter told Insider. The source requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the subject. The company employed more than 67,000 people at the end of 2021, per Bloomberg. Shopee was founded in 2015 in seven markets across Southeast Asia and has since expanded operations into 13 markets total.
A company spokesperson told Insider the changes are "part of our ongoing efforts to optimise operating efficiency with the goal of achieving self-sufficiency across our business."
Below, read the full text of the memo Li sent to employees.
"Dear Sailors,
We have made some difficult announcements lately. I know many of you would have seen negative reports about us in the media, and you may have been shaken by news of us shutting down operations in some markets. I am writing to you today to explain what is happening, and also talk about what we need to do in the next 12-18 months.
As you know, this is a turbulent period for our industry. When countries reopened, we lost the strong tailwinds we had during the pandemic. And then, the world was hit with a series of macro-economic blows, one after another: war in Europe, huge supply chain disruptions, soaring inflation, and slowing economic growth. It has been a brutal year for everyone, and the capital markets have plunged into turmoil. Some economists are predicting a global recession.
Sadly, we are not immune to these shocks. Every team has done its best to weather this storm so far. We have taken each new constraint in our stride and tried to adapt – even when doing so has required painful action. I know many of you have put in extra hours, made do with less, and tried to stay positive as we made these hard turns. Thank you for this.
We can now see that this is not a quickly passing storm: these negative conditions will likely persist into the medium term. Looking at the landscape ahead, the leadership team and I are making some decisions to help us not just survive this storm, but come out of it in as strong a position as possible. I am writing to ask for your support as we implement these plans.
Our number one objective for the next 12-18 months is achieving self-sufficiency. This means achieving positive cashflow as soon as we can. Right now, thanks to years of prudent action and hard work, we have a solid cash base that puts us in a safer position than many of our counterparts in the tech sector. However, we can easily run through this cash base if we are not careful, and with investors fleeing for 'safe haven' investments, we do not anticipate being able to raise funds in the market.
The only way for us to free ourselves from relying on external capital is to become self-sufficient, generating enough cash for all our own needs and projects. If we manage to do this, it will have huge implications for our future. We will have peace of mind, becoming less affected by the external ups and downs that are hurting us today. We will be more strong-footed, and less distracted, able to refocus on our own goals.
This is how I want Sea to emerge from this storm: in a position of certainty and independence, fully able to choose our own path.
To achieve this, we need to do two things:
It will not be easy for us to achieve this. But if we are all willing to pitch in, tighten our belts, and work together, I know we can make it happen.
Similar to what has been announced by many others in our industry, we will be tightening our expense policies, effective from 1 October (although I strongly encourage everyone to abide by them immediately). The full details are in the attached document, but these are the main points:
These new rules will apply to every Sailor, including myself and the entire leadership team.
In addition, the leadership team has decided that we will not take any cash compensation until the company achieves self-sufficiency.
I know that news like this can be difficult to accept. We are watching the world situation closely, and we will need to continue adapting as best as we can. I hope that I can count on your support and understanding as we try to get through this.
You will hear from me more frequently over the next few months. I will do my best to keep you updated on our situation and what we see happening in the world. If you have feedback or ideas, I welcome you to write to me. I may not be able to reply, but I will read and consider every message.
Thank you, Sailors, for all the effort you have put into building our company. Without your hard work, we would not have been able to touch millions of lives. Now, we need to again go through a transition that I know might be painful and stressful, on individuals as well as the collective. But if we can make this next big adaptation, our company will enter a new bound. Self-sufficiency is the key to our future success.
The next 12-18 months are crucial to the long-term health and longevity of our company. Let us do what we need to do to get through this together.
Forrest."

]]>“I was inconsolable. How is it possible that they killed a boy who was taking water to the protesters?” Vanegas says on a rainy afternoon in Managua. “After that, I started to take part in the anti-government protests.”
Vanegas, a lean 63-year-old, has given rise to a new form of protest. He runs the streets and highways of Nicaragua with a slogan, “Corro para correr a Daniel,” which roughly translated means he is running to oust the president. The protests were sparked by a government reform to raise taxes and reduce benefits. Ortega backtracked when the disturbances continued, but by that point, several people had been killed and the movement continued, demanding justice for the dead. The government continued to repress them, prompting more deaths and more anger, a cycle that continues to this day — with a death toll around 400.
I started running to run off the diabetes, but now I’m running to run off Ortega.
Alex Vanegas
Vanegas runs at least 18 miles each day, with a staggering 50 miles as his personal best. The retired marathon runner makes a living selling stainless steel pots and renting small apartments in a working-class neighborhood of Managua. Now, when the government puts down the protests — imprisoning leaders or chasing them into exile — Vanegas is often the only show of rebellion on the streets for days. He runs with posters plastered with photos of imprisoned students and T-shirts emblazoned with the words “Freedom for the political prisoners!”
***
The temperature topped 100 degrees on the streets of Managua in the afternoon of Oct. 2. The city was coated with police and government sympathizers who emerged to obstruct the protesters, according to human rights organizations. In the midst of a racket of car engines, a voice could be heard reciting the words of a famous Nicaraguan poet, the late Rubén Darío: “Si la patria es pequeña uno grande la sueña” — “If one’s homeland is small, you dream it big.” It’s Vanegas running in between the cars. Government loyalists boo him and the police laugh as he runs by.

“People support me. I feel that protesting in this way contributes to calling out this government and adds pressure for Ortega and his family to leave,” Vanegas says with conviction. Before the protests, he was only known in his neighborhood, but Vanegas has now been transformed into a national figure. Journalists squabble over interviews with him, and he gets constant calls from both home and abroad to talk about the injustices he sees. And that was the reason he started running the streets in the first place. Human rights organizations were reporting 36 people had been killed during the protests and mothers of the victims had gathered to protest, carrying photos of their dead children. Vanegas arrived in support, but he walked around and around in circles, not knowing what to do.
“I hadn’t run in two years because of a back problem, and I started walking and my body kept asking for more and more, and I couldn’t stop,” he says of the start of his endless run, reminiscent of the title character in the film Forrest Gump — but with a moral purpose.
Trained as a business administrator, Vanegas used to make a living as a DJ, presiding over parties. Some 40 years ago, he was given a piece of news that changed his life, when a doctor told him he had diabetes and had to improve his diet and exercise regimen. So he ran and ran and ran some more, becoming an amateur marathoner who competed abroad as well as at home. “I started running to run off the diabetes, but now I’m running to run off Ortega,” he says, laughing. His son Samuel Vanegas adds: “My father is hyperactive; he can’t stay still. He dances, sings, runs, walks.”
***
Elsa Valle is a 19-year-old student who was accused of terrorism by the government. When she got out of jail at the end of September, she realized that Vanegas had run hundreds of miles carrying her photo and wearing a T-shirt demanding her freedom. “We couldn’t watch the news in prison, and when I got out my family told me what he had done for me — he has been like an angel,” Valle says.
His protests against Ortega have had a personal cost for Vanegas. He has been imprisoned twice — once in Masaya, a city less than 20 miles from Managua that for more than two months staged a standoff against Ortega. He was running on the streets of Masaya one day when two police trucks full of officers drove into his path. Social media video shows Vanegas running and asking for help, but he was captured and interrogated.
“Why are you running on the streets?” asked one of the police officers. “Because the streets belong to the people,” he replied. “Go home!” screamed a policeman, before letting him go.
That same day he was arrested again when he arrived back in Managua. “I thought that they were going to kill me, but they took me to El Chipote,” a maximum-security jail, Vanegas says. Inside, he told the police that he would continue to run in protest, and the superior officer questioning him said: “Tie him to a rock and throw him in the lagoon,” Vanegas recalls, referring to a body of water just outside the jail.
Vanegas thought he was a dead man, but they let him go. And since then, he hasn’t stopped running.

After several tumultuous weeks of uncertainty, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court on Saturday.
The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh, after several days of speculation over how key senators viewed as “swing votes” would decide. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia were pivotal in confirming Kavanaugh, voting “yes,” while Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski opposed his confirmation.
But the multiple sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Kavanaugh in recent weeks still hangs over Saturday’s news, prompting furious backlash from the protesters who for weeks lobbied Collins, Manchin, and other senators to vote against Kavanaugh’s confirmation.
Christine Blasey Ford, 51, accused a teenaged Kavanaugh of forcing himself on her at a high school party in the early 1980s. Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh’s, said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her without her consent at a dorm-room party during his freshman 1983-84 school year.
Kavanaugh categorically denied Ford and Ramirez’s accounts in separate statements before delivering a fiery testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. An additional FBI background check into the allegations concluded less than a week later with no corroboration for the accounts.
Kavanaugh was born and bred in the Washington, DC area and has a long history in conservative circles. Top Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin once called Kavanaugh the “Forrest Gump of Republican politics,” because he was present for so many key moments in modern political history.
As the final vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation approaches, here’s a look at how the born-and-bred conservative rose to become the court’s most pivotal nomination in decades:

Prior to starting wheelchair curling at the age of 42, Ina Forrest had only touched a granite stone two other times in her life.
Now in her third Paralympics, Forrest and the team are once again heading into the medal round. She’s won gold at the past two Paralympics for Canada.
“I could have never imagined this for my life,” Forrest said.
Forrest was extremely active while growing up in Fort St. John, B.C. She loved sports and imagined playing them throughout her entire life.
That all changed when Forrest was 21 years old; she was hit by a drunk driver and was paralyzed. For the next 21 years, Forrest didn’t even consider sports. She had university, kids and a life to focus on.
That all changed during a trip to get groceries.
“I was at Costco and my friend said ‘hey, let’s go try wheelchair curling,'” Forrest said. “That’s how it started.”
Thirteen years later, Forrest is a two-time Paralympic champion, has competed at the last nine world wheelchair curling championships and was inducted into Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in February of 2016.
Now she’s alongside Marie Wright, Dennis Thiessen, Mark Ideson and alternate James Anseeuw in their bid to win a fourth consecutive gold medal for Canada. The team plays China on Friday at 2:35 a.m. ET in the semifinals, while South Korea takes on Norway in the other matchup.
“Four years ago I kind of went ‘do I want to do it again?’ You have to commit to it if you’re going to do it in my opinion,” Forrest said.
“[The] Paralympics is just such an amazing event. Once you’re here it’s like, yeah, this is what you play for.”
Wright, from Moose Jaw, Sask., is making her first appearance at the Paralympics. The 57-year-old paraplegic single mother of four daughters has caught the attention of fans, players and people across Canada with her bright smile and positive attitude.
She’s basking in this experience.
“It feels so good. I’m so excited,” Wright said.
At the beginning of the event the team made a fun bet about what their record in the round robin would be.
Wright was exactly right.
“Before we left home we all made a bet on how we were going to finish in the standings and everyone said 7-4 and I said 9-2 and I’m so excited,” she said, adding that it was the optimist in her that picked that record.
Wright likes to think the key to her success is keeping things light during the games and enjoying the moment.
“I just love the game. As long as you’re hanging fun, you feel the ice and it helps your game,” she said.
Ideson is really starting to find his groove at the Games.
His shot in the fifth end against the United States, a through-the-port jaw-dropping takeout, is still being talked about. Ever since that game, Ideson has been getting better and better. And his confident is building.
“We’re 11 games in now and we have the feel for the ice,” he said. “The only thing I can’t seem to get down is that first end and off to a quick start. I have to polish that up for the next game.”
He only started playing wheelchair curling eight years ago. Four years after he threw his first rock from a wheelchair, Ideson won gold as lead with Canada’s team at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics.
Now he’s the skip and is working hard at perfecting his game.
“I’m still learning out there. Every end. I don’t know if you can play this game long enough to know everything,” he said.
Ideson is patient; he waits for other teams to make mistakes and then capitalizes. The team has had four comeback wins throughout the tournament. “The Comeback Kids” has become the rink’s nickname.
“That’s the character of this team. We just have to stay patient,” Ideson said.
His family is in the crowd watching and cheering all of the shots and he knows there are a lot more back home supporting the team.
“We hear Canada loud and clear cheering for us. We love the support,” Ideson said. “We still just have to take it one rock at a time now.”
]]>Rom’s Truffle Trail wants to teach you the ropes of woodland cuisine, as you’ll be acting as an apprentice to Rom, our wise truffle-hunting pig. He knows where the good outdoorsy eating is at, and if you pay attention, he’ll teach you the right combinations of foods to cram in your adorable mouth for the best tastes.
Just, you know, don’t try to eat the moles. They don’t go down easy.
Rom’s Truffle Trail gives you a field to step through, with delightful eats lying in your path. You can collect three of a kind in the same color and type, which will make for a mouthful of delicious points. Variety works as well, though, so grabbing three different items (and they all HAVE to be different) also makes for good eating. As you devour these items new foods will take their place, so it will be up to you to shuffle through the field and get as many delightful combinations as you can to grow that score. And grab the occasional truffle that will have you gobbling everything in sight. Except for moles, as too many run-ins with them will have Rom finding new help.
You can tackle forest food hunting in the more tense scoring mode, where you fight to get a lot of points and show your foodie talents, or the more peaceful Zen Mode where you just kind of fiddle with the food lying around. Either way, the game’s cute look and charming musical score give Rom’s Truffle Trail‘s an appeal that should have players following their noses to it when it releases.
For more information on Rom’s Truffle Trail, you can head to the game’s site or follow its development on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Life isn’t quite like a box of chocolates for Jeff Sessions, but that didn’t stop Saturday Night Live from having the Attorney General double as Forrest Gump in this weekend’s cold open.
Kate McKinnon’s Sessions sat as a bus stop, telling various commuters about his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week, which found him forced to address allegations that he, along with several other top advisers to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, were in contact with Russian officials.
“I had a bad week,” Sessions said. “It started out real good. The president made a great speech; folks were thrilled on account of it was real words in a row for a whole hour. We were all as happy as a monkey with a peanut machine, then I went to bed and got 800 messages and phone alerts saying I was a sneaky little liar. I didn’t know what to do, so my lawyers said, ‘Run, Jeffy! Run!’”
Sessions also weighed in on his good friend Kellyanne Conway, who allegedly isn’t allowed to speak on behalf of the Trump campaign following her latest highly publicized faux pas.
“Being in the government is so fun… you meet so many nice people like this, my best friend Kellyanne,” Sessions remarked, before taking out a photo of Conway’s infamous Oval Office couch goof. “She ain’t got no legs. She’s the best talker you ever heard… but they don’t let her talk anymore.”
After a quick meeting with Beck Bennett’s Vladimir Putin, McKinnon’s Sessions then exchanged pleasantries with host Octavia Spencer, who reprised her role as The Help‘s Minny Jackson and baked a special pie especially for the Attorney General.
What did you think of SNL‘s Jeff Sessions spoof? Watch select clips above.

The last two Surfs movies aren’t the most memorable kid films out there, but their success – they did great business overseas – proved there’s still plenty of love out there for these characters. The little blue humanoids are again starring in a movie, but this time, it’s a fully animated feature from director Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2), not another blend of live-action and animation. Smurfette (Demi Lovato), Gargamel (Rainn Wilson), and Papa Smurf (Mandy Patinkin) are back Smurfs: The Lost Village and a new promo has arrived to tease their return.
Here’s the set-up: Hefty (Joe Manganiello), Clumsy (Jack McBrayer), Brainy (Danny Pudi), Smurfette, and big Papa Smurf try to reach the lost village in the Forbidden Forrest before Gargamel does. This community, led by SmurfWillow (Julia Roberts), holds something the evil wizard, who was previously played by Hank Azaria, is after. It’s also where Smurfette – the sole female Smurf in her village – discovers others like her. Other Smurfs present along for this adventure include SmurfStorm (Michelle Rodriguez), SmurfBlossom (Ellie Kemper), and SmurfLily (Ariel Winter).
Musician Meghan Trainor recorded a song for the film, titled “I’m A Lady,” and it’s the driving for once this Smurfs: The Lost Village preview:
It’s a strangely sluggish promo and not because of the song. Midway through, it starts feeling like a random series of images slapped together as “I’m A Lady” plays. There’s not much rhythm to go along with the tune.
The movie itself, on the other hand, continues to look like a step up from the live-action Smurfs movies, which are based on the Belgian comic and television series of the same name. A few weeks ago, Sony showed some clips from the film at a presentation I attended and the footage was light on irony, pop culture gags, and those sort of jokes. The humor was more innocent and playful and character-based. The gags were broad, but not too broad. It was a few degrees below Sony Animation’s Hotel Transylvania, if that makes sense.
Here’s the synopsis:
In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history!
Smurfs: The Lost Village will hit theaters on April 7th, 2017.
