Now I’m not saying that the absence of “King of the Hill” is what got us in this mess, but since the show ended in 2010, America seems to have lost its collective mind. From Karens to Donalds and all the QAnon in between, what we need right now is for Hank Hill to shed a little light on the absurdity of our present day.

The satirical animated series, which ran from 1997 to 2010, examined a plethora of social issues through the perspective of small-town Texas rednecks. America’s favorite propane and propane accessory salesman Hank Hill was at the center of it all, like a well-intentioned Archie Bunker.

Hank was a principled, old-school conservative doing his best to adjust to a changing society. The show’s plots would place him in some of the most preposterous situations one could imagine. And he mostly handled it all with dignity. The dignity of, say, Lady Bird Johnson.

And though the formula for the animated series might be simple, it may have meant more to viewers than its creators ever realized.

Even In Texas, Hank Was A Fish Out Of Water

Mike Judge’s “King of the Hill” is like comfort food. When you turn it on, you know exactly what you’re going to get, and you know it’s going to make you feel good. Like a propane grill that you know is going to light every time and cook evenly.

The show made its fair share of social statements, but to a lesser degree than its animated contemporaries like “South Park” or “Family Guy.” Rather than biting satire, Judge used what has worked for live-action sitcoms for decades — the fish-out-of-water trope and observational comedy. Judge explained his simple formula to IGN, saying, “It’s usually putting Hank up against something really annoying and ridiculous in the modern world and just making it as annoying and ridiculous as possible.”

It helped that Hank was a conservative pragmatist during an era when society began to grow more progressive. In one episode, Hank’s affinity for outdated “traditional values” made it difficult to deal with a “new age” parenting style. Judge took what “new age” parenting might normally look like and made it as absurd as possible.

It’s a surprisingly simple formula for a show that ran for 13 seasons. But the show also used humor to address complex issues that are often difficult for people to talk about. Although there was nothing groundbreaking about the show’s formula, the impact of “King of the Hill” has been extensive.

‘The Last Bipartisan TV Comedy’

The premise for “King of the Hill” was rooted in reality, inspired by real people surrounding Judge in his north Dallas neighborhood. “I just had this image of just four guys with beers standing out in front of the fence, kind of like I used to see when I’d look out my kitchen window,” Judge said. “And I just drew them all saying, ‘Yep, yep, yep.'”

Despite Hank Hill’s conservative bent, the show mostly stayed away from explicit political messages. The legacy of “King of the Hill” isn’t that it avoided politics, but rather that it united viewers amid a rapidly growing political divide. The Atlantic called the show “the last bipartisan TV comedy,” noting that its characters emphasized humanity in a changing world. While the situations Hank Hill faced were absurd, his altruistic response to them made the show a comfort for us all.

How would “King of the Hill” play today, where every topic seems to get absorbed into part of a culture war? We might find out. According to ComicBook.com, Mike Judge and “King of the Hill” co-creator Greg Daniels have formed a new animation company, Bandera Entertainment. One of their projects in development is a “King of the Hill” revival. The show is slated to take place 15 years after the original series ended. In response, I think we can all agree in saying, “Yep, yep, yep.”

Formula E starts season 5 in Saudi Arabia with a faster electric race car https://briefnews.eu/formula-e-starts-season-5-in-saudi-arabia-with-a-faster-electric-race-car/ https://briefnews.eu/formula-e-starts-season-5-in-saudi-arabia-with-a-faster-electric-race-car/#respond Sat, 15 Dec 2018 12:00:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/formula-e-starts-season-5-in-saudi-arabia-with-a-faster-electric-race-car/

Formula E

Most of the motorsports world takes a well-deserved break in December. The long Formula 1 championship is done, as is the even longer NASCAR season. But this weekend, one series is about to get started: it’s time for Formula E, which holds its first race of the 2018/2019 championship on Saturday. This is the fifth season for this electric racing championship, and it represents a new chapter for the sport as Formula E gets all-new cars and adds some new cities to the roster (including this weekend’s race, which takes place in Ad Diriyah, Saudi Arabia).

Here at Ars, we’ve been fans of the all-electric racing series from day one. We were at the first-ever US race in Miami in 2015, and that same year two of the cars even carried our logo at the season finale in London. Since then, we’ve been regulars at the NYC ePrix, a two-day doubleheader that marks the conclusion of the championship. Electric cars racing on temporary street circuits in city centers represented quite a departure from your average racing series, and it’s fair to say that Formula E has had to deal with a lot of skeptics. But we like people who try new things, and, over the course of the past four years, the sport has done a lot to win many naysayers over.

Follow This Simple Success Formula to Stop Feeling Stuck in Life https://briefnews.eu/follow-this-simple-success-formula-to-stop-feeling-stuck-in-life/ https://briefnews.eu/follow-this-simple-success-formula-to-stop-feeling-stuck-in-life/#respond Fri, 12 Oct 2018 13:16:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/follow-this-simple-success-formula-to-stop-feeling-stuck-in-life/ Life can come as a roller coaster sometimes. It is tough to be the best version of yourself as you constantly meet with obstacles and life’s changing dynamisms. To move on to a different plateau, you may need to be more strategic and systematic in your approach to life.

I have been there. I know how it feels to get stuck and having nowhere to go. Yes, you may feel lost and don’t know how to come out from that hole. One thing I know though is that you can always get out and find a solution. It all starts with changing your thoughts and actions.

These steps are not hard but can be a simple success formula which when taken can create lasting changes in your life.

Be realistic

There is nothing that can move you forward in life until you are realistic enough to admit something is broken. Everything is not okay, you don’t need to pretend or butter the truth.

You have to be completely honest with yourself, take full responsibility for your life at this point and push forward.

You have to admit that you’ve made poor decisions, you have made some mistakes and may not be working as hard as you should be. Yet, there is hope if you can be brutally honest with yourself and move forward from there.

Make that choice to be different

Perhaps you are stuck with doing the same routine, going to the same places and being in the wrong circle. It is up to you to point your life in a new direction.

Yes, you could already be disgusted with the current one and need to do things differently. It is important for you to get fed up with the world you are in, so you can make a choice for something better. Making such decisions has a way of changing everything!

Look for something you’re really good at

Your life may be boring in certain areas, but it doesn’t have to be boring in all areas. Y

ou may need to shift your mindset and go back to those things you have always been fond of. When you can find such passion, you should make that decision to become better at it.

Change can be a slow process, but continually putting in the work every day could see your life change full circle.

Ask the right questions

“What could I do to be better?” “How can I make the most of your time?” “Where and when did it go wrong?” “What am I not doing right?”

You can’t take it away, asking the right questions will always lead to great answers.

You really need to be introspective when asking those questions about your life, where it is now and how you can position yourself for it to be better. The answers you get will be what leads you to finding a surer and more certain path to become happier and more successful.

You could also ask others what you are really good at and what role they see you taking on. You don’t need to simply ask anybody, ask the people who are already living the life you desire. Surely, they should be able to point you at the right direction.

At the end of the day, know that it is your duty to seek the life you desire, and perhaps asking smart questions could be what leads you there.

Push your mental powers

Your thoughts have a way of guiding you to living the best life. You become what you think about most of the time. You shouldn’t just accept things the way they are, do something about it.

Don’t complain about how terrible your life has become, rather do something about it. Look for ways to be better at what you do.

By thinking right and positively, you will certainly take charge of your life and respond actively to those things that happen to you.

Remember, to every setback, there is a way out. If you are failing at your career or job, you may need to gain new skills. If you are broke and do not have the money to live the best life, go out there and look for a job or learn something.

There is always a way out of that dead-end job or relationship if you constantly apply yourself to thinking.

Get a mentor

It is an age-old principle of success to find yourself a mentor, someone who will act as a guide in helping you actualize your dreams.

Find someone doing well in a particular area in life, yes, you want to be like them and embrace their tutelage.

Having someone you can look up to inspires you to be better. They certainly would have a thing or two to tell you that would empower you to get out there to accomplish great things.

So go out there, look for positive role models that can certainly have a major impact in your life. Here’s how to find a mentor that fits you:

A Good Mentor Is Hard to Find: What to Look for in a Mentor

Be responsible

Complaining or playing the blame game won’t take you anywhere. If you want to stop feeling stuck, you have to learn to take responsibility for your actions and where you are now.

You don’t have to drain your energy with complaining or any negative vibe. Look at the bright side. Know that if you really act responsibly you will get out of any hole you are in.

Be aware

Knowing yourself helps you win a thousand battles. Self-awareness is pivotal to living the life of your dreams. Such knowledge about yourself helps you find those things that can push you forward to great accomplishments.

Perhaps you have been talked down to or doubt yourself, think about what you could do with your life. The people talking down on you or telling you that you can’t are really not the problem – you are actually.

And if you are the problem, you can also be the solution too. When you know who you are, what you want and where you are going, no one can stop or deter you.

So study yourself, accept your role in the events of your life and see how you can better your strengths to face the challenges that would come your way. Take a look at this guide and learn how to be more self-aware:

Being Self Aware Is the Key to Success: How to Boost Self Awareness

Assume total control of your life

On the path to success, nothing should be left to chance. Your life is your responsibility. You are the one in the driver’s seat. You have control over the decisions you make. You also have control over how you respond to events or other people’s actions.

Certainly, there will be obstacles along the way, however you should have a guiding philosophy or ideology that will take you forward.

How you want to be is what you will be anyways. You may not be able to control a lot of factors in your life, but you can control your destiny if you assume control of your attitude, personality and aspirations.

Improve your circle

Your circle could be a mirror of how you view the world. If you are in a negative circle that robs you of your joy and self-esteem, you are not really going to attain much.

Improve your circle of friends. Focus on quality rather than quantity. People that push you to become the best version of yourself or make you feel good about yourself shouldn’t be traded for anything in the world.

Get motivated

There are a lot of audio materials and self-help books that would help you find direction even when you are lost. Such food for the soul could help you see your strengths and abilities after all.

Yes, no matter how drained and down you are, there is always something you have to offer. Motivate yourself by listening to or reading positive materials. This way you can know that others have been where you are and they survived.

Stop listening to the naysayers, start listening to those who have the “I can” spirit.

The bottom line

No matter how you like it or not, change is a slow process. Not everything you wish for will come all at once. But those consistent daily efforts could make a lot of difference.

It starts with accepting where you are right now and being willing to put in the work to get out of your current position.

Feeling lost is a state of mind anyways. Making those necessary changes could create a lasting change in your life and take you to the right direction after all.

F1 Japanese Grand Prix LIVE STREAM: How to watch Formula One from Suzuka live online https://briefnews.eu/f1-japanese-grand-prix-live-stream-how-to-watch-formula-one-from-suzuka-live-online/ https://briefnews.eu/f1-japanese-grand-prix-live-stream-how-to-watch-formula-one-from-suzuka-live-online/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 06:50:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/f1-japanese-grand-prix-live-stream-how-to-watch-formula-one-from-suzuka-live-online/

Formula One is back with the world’s best drivers about to face off at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Mercedes star and championship leader Lewis Hamilton will be looking to extend his lead at the top of the summit after qualifying on pole.

And the Brit, who is chasing his fifth world title, will be boosted as big rival Sebastian Vettel is starting eighth on the grid.

The Ferrari driver was left struggling in Q3 on Saturday after being sent out on intermediate tyres in dry conditions.

And then when he returned to put on slicks the four-time world champion made a mistake on his sole flying lap on dry tyres.

It’s another blow for Vettel as he looks to make a dent in the 50 point lead Hamilton has with just five races remaining.

Speaking after qualifying, Hamilton said: “The team have done an amazing job all weekend.

“The call at the start of Q3 was probably the most difficult call.

“And that gave us the chance to get pole position.

“It’s my 80th and I can’t believe I’ve got 80.

“We have worked so hard to refine and improve this car and the same for ourselves on the way we work as a team.

“I am so proud to be on this journey with them.

“Every team has smart people, but it is about how you perform together under pressure.”

While Vettel said: “I made a mistake in Spoon and the second run we didn’t get out in time.

“This is not the position we deserve to be in.”

If you want to watch all the action from the Japanese Grand Prix as Hamilton edges closer to a fifth world title then here’s how to tune in online.

HOW TO WATCH THE JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Coverage of today’s Japanese Grand Prix from Spa will be shown live on Sky Sports F1 (Sky 406, Sky HD 860, Virgin 516) and Channel 4.

The pre-race build-up starts at 5.30am on Sky Sports F1 and 6am on Channel 4 before lights out at around 6.10am.

This means that all the action can be followed on your desktop or laptop via the Sky Go and the All 4 on demand service.

Sky Go and All 4 are available to download on iOS and Android smartphone and tablet devices.

Sky Go is also available on a number of platforms including Amazon Fire devices, iPad, Mac computers and laptops, Playstation 3, PS4 and Xbox One.

The Sky Sports app, available to download on iOS and Android devices, will also be providing live text coverage and updates.

If you’re not currently a Sky Sports customer but can’t stand to miss out on the action, you can add the channels to your box via a NOW TV subscription.

Day passes, which let you add Sky Sports channels for 24 hours, start at £7.99 a day, with a weekly pass starting from £12.99, and no locking in to a contract.

NOW TV doesn’t even require a typical television to use, as it is also available on a NOW TV Box, Chromecast, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Roku, LG Smart TV, PC or Mac, and selected mobile and tablet devices.

Here’s what Formula 1 cars may look like in 2021 if the sport gets its way https://briefnews.eu/heres-what-formula-1-cars-may-look-like-in-2021-if-the-sport-gets-its-way/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-what-formula-1-cars-may-look-like-in-2021-if-the-sport-gets-its-way/#respond Sat, 15 Sep 2018 13:13:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-what-formula-1-cars-may-look-like-in-2021-if-the-sport-gets-its-way/

Formula 1 has become quite forward-thinking since getting new owners interested in more than just sucking as much profit out of the sport as possible. That was certainly on display in a series of concept cars for the 2021 season the racing series showed to the world on Friday ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix. All three ideas are much more dramatic in appearance than current F1 machinery, showing how the Halo cockpit protection can be cohesively integrated with the styling. It turns out that 18-inch wheels actually do look pretty damn good.

Of course, the three concepts are about more than just aesthetics. As we’ve previously discussed, the sport’s technical rulebook is going to be thoroughly revised for the 2021 season in an attempt to cure a number of ills including the inability of one car to follow closely behind another due to the effect of turbulent air.

“When we started looking at the 2021 car, the primary objective was to enable the cars to race well together,” said Ross Brawn, F1 motorsport director, in a post on the Formula 1 website. “Once the cars get within a few car lengths of each other, they lose 50 percent of their downforce. That’s a substantial amount of performance lost. So we set about understanding why that was and how we can improve it. I’m pleased to say we’re at about 80 [percent].”

BMW will unveil its Formula E racer next week https://briefnews.eu/bmw-will-unveil-its-formula-e-racer-next-week/ https://briefnews.eu/bmw-will-unveil-its-formula-e-racer-next-week/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 11:51:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bmw-will-unveil-its-formula-e-racer-next-week/

The fifth season of the Formula E championship is scheduled to start on December 15th in Saudi Arabia, and it will be the first one where BMW participates as an official manufacturer. While all of the cars will use the same next-generation Formula E chassis designed by Spark Racing, the components inside (electronics, inverters, gearboxes and motors) and livery are up to the teams.

For this BMW iFE.18 — last seen while testing in Spain this spring — the company said engineers who worked on drive components for its i3 collaborated with its racing team, in a way that should allow information to flow from the track to the street (and vice versa). We’ll find out more about how it looks and works when it’s officially unveiled on September 14th.

Nissan similarly said it leaned on experience from building the second generation Leaf to develop its season five car. This time around, the cars are lighter and feature double the energy storage, so they can complete a race without the driver needing to switch into a backup vehicle. The series has also gone from laps to timed races, added new locations and tossed in activation zones that drivers can pass through to unlock additional power. We’ll find out whose engineers and drivers are standing at the top of the scoring sheets next July in New York.

The mysterious new ‘Fallout’ game is reportedly using the same survival formula that’s seen wide success in other online games https://briefnews.eu/the-mysterious-new-fallout-game-is-reportedly-using-the-same-survival-formula-thats-seen-wide-success-in-other-online-games/ https://briefnews.eu/the-mysterious-new-fallout-game-is-reportedly-using-the-same-survival-formula-thats-seen-wide-success-in-other-online-games/#respond Sun, 03 Jun 2018 15:28:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-mysterious-new-fallout-game-is-reportedly-using-the-same-survival-formula-thats-seen-wide-success-in-other-online-games/ There was a time, around four or five years ago, when it seemed the only games that were being released followed the same formula: early access, open-world, and survival. Games like Day Z and Rust exploded almost overnight, and many copycats followed.

The premise of an open-world survival game is relatively simple —  you’re thrust into a world with other online players, with one goal: survive. There aren’t any quests or missions in those games, and the bulk of memorable experiences come from interactions with other players.

That’s why it’s surprising to hear that the next Fallout game is reportedly following a similar formula. Fallout, known for being a single-player role-playing-game experience, is one of developer Bethesda’s most successful series. However, Kotaku reports that the next iteration, Fallout 76, will be an open-world survival RPG, heavily inspired by games like Day Z and Rust.

Open-world survival games were once constantly at the top of the sales list on Steam, but the genre has thinned out and it seems the bulk of the playerbase has moved on (most likely to battle royale games like PUBG and Fortnite). Thus, Bethesda likely has a real challenge on its hands to produce a game that clicks with players in a genre that they are seemingly already tired of.

Here’s what we know about the next Fallout game, and the games that apparently inspired it:

Day Z

Day Z / Bohemia Interactive

Day Z, developed by Bohemia Interactive, first launched as a modification for the battle-simulation game Arma II. Even with its clunky controls and outdated graphics, the game became an internet sensation. It brought the open-world survival genre to the forefront of gaming, and when the standalone version of the game was released in 2013, over one million copies were quickly sold.

The game is centered around surviving a zombie apocalypse, either by teaming up with other players or going at it alone. Players need to eat, drink, treat wounds, and scavenge supplies — all while avoiding being killed by the walking dead or other players with ill intentions. When your character dies in Day Z, you lose any supplies and gear you had at the time, and start over fresh with an empty inventory.

However, the game suffered a pretty severe decline in popularity, after the playerbase became unsatisfied with the efforts of the developers to update the game and provide new and refreshing content.

Rust

Rust / Facepunch Studios

Rust is a game developed by Facepunch Studios, which was heavily inspired by Day Z. It was released in early access in 2013, and fully released in 2018.

While Rust is also an open-world survival game, the threat comes almost solely from other players instead of zombies. The survival elements are similar, with players required to eat, drink, and tend to wounds, but the addition of a crafting system made the game stand apart from Day Z. Players can craft weapons, clothing, shelters, and other game elements to give them an advantage over the environment and other players.

Since Fallout 4 introduced the concept of shelter building in the Fallout franchise, it’s likely that Bethesda developers pulled from this game for inspiration on how to make that work in a multiplayer setting.

However, Rust’s final release received only average reviews, and by 2018 it seemed that consumers had become tired of the open-world survival genre.

That brings us to Fallout 76.

Fallout / Bethesda

According to the three people with insider knowledge that Kotaku spoke with, Fallout 76 will be an open-world survival RPG game. Fallout 4 introduced base/settlement building to the series in 2015, and the sources confirmed that this gameplay aspect will also be present in Fallout 76.

The survival and RPG elements are nothing new to the series, but Fallout has never had a multiplayer mode before. This is similar to the approach Bethesda took with Elder Scrolls Online, the massively-multiplayer online addition to the Elder Scrolls series, which was also traditionally single-player until that release.

Formula 1 finally launched its livestream—and it was a total mess https://briefnews.eu/formula-1-finally-launched-its-livestream-and-it-was-a-total-mess/ https://briefnews.eu/formula-1-finally-launched-its-livestream-and-it-was-a-total-mess/#respond Sat, 12 May 2018 23:04:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/formula-1-finally-launched-its-livestream-and-it-was-a-total-mess/

This week, Formula 1’s long-anticipated Internet streaming service went live just ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. The introduction of its own online stream was a huge priority for Liberty Media, the sport’s owner, which is trying to bring the 21st century to a series that until now had stoutly ignored the Internet. This new stream probably represents the biggest fan-facing change Liberty has made since buying F1’s commercial rights from a vulture fund, and it’s an offering many of us have been crying out for. Many other racing series have been live-streaming their races for some time now. But I’m not going to sugar coat it—this new F1 viewing option seems really quite mediocre, particularly considering the cost.

You pays your money…

There are actually two different subscription levels on offer. F1 TV Pro—$ 11.99 per month here in the US—gets you the races as well as all the other track sessions live and on-demand after the fact, along with all 20 cars’ onboard feeds, unedited team radio broadcasts, an archive of past F1 races, documentaries, live timing, and a driver tracking map. F1 TV Access—just $ 2.99 in the US—is a little more basic. You still get the archives, documentaries, timing, scoring, and some radio feeds, but this tier only offers replays of each session.
