  • Private discussions are underway about a new centrist force in British politics.
  • Sources tell Business Insider that moderate Labour and Conservative MPs who oppose Brexit are involved in confidential discussions.
  • However, insiders say talks are at an early stage, vague and not yet likely to lead to a new party.
  • Sir Vince Cable, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has been “sounding out” MPs from other parties about potentially forming an alliance.
  • However, the Lib Dems have major reforms planned and are unlikely to give up on the party anytime soon.

LONDON —  Politicians from across the political spectrum have been holding secret talks about forging a new centrist political movement, well-placed sources from all the major parties have told Business Insider.

Why Forming a New Good Habit Is Easier Than Breaking a Bad One https://briefnews.eu/why-forming-a-new-good-habit-is-easier-than-breaking-a-bad-one/ https://briefnews.eu/why-forming-a-new-good-habit-is-easier-than-breaking-a-bad-one/#respond Tue, 06 Feb 2018 05:13:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-forming-a-new-good-habit-is-easier-than-breaking-a-bad-one/

We’ve all got a few bad habits. No one’s perfect. Whether it’s eating too much candy, leaving everything until the last minute, watching too much TV, skipping workouts, or letting e-mails pile up at work, we all do things that go against our best interests.

So why don’t we just drop our bad habits? Every year, millions of us make New Year’s resolutions in a bid to change. Unfortunately, as you know, it’s not that simple. Our bad habits become a regular way of life. We start to say things like, “Oh, that’s just how I am!” and “It’s just what I do.” It can feel impossible to break a habit once and for all. In fact, the more you try to resist a habit, the more it can stick.

The science behind bad habits

We all repeat things that feel good, even if we know that they won’t help us in the long run. This is because bad habits such as drinking alcohol, eating too much sugary food, and spending too long in front of the TV trigger the release of dopamine, a feel-good chemical in the brain.[1] When your brain learns that a particular action makes you feel good, it compels you to repeat it in the future. Your bad habits serve a purpose. Although you might not like the end result, they give you a positive outcome in the moment. This is why they are so hard to kick.

If you develop the habit of slumping in front of the TV as soon as you get in from work, you will probably start skipping workouts, which becomes another bad habit. You might also start to snack in front of your favorite shows. Suddenly, you will have slipped into not one, not two, but three bad habits!

It’s human nature to seek out rewards, even if they harm us. For instance, 70% of smokers say that they would like to quit but cannot do so, despite the fact they everyone knows that smoking is terrible for human health.[2]

What should you do instead?

Quite simply, you need to start building better habits and stop wasting time and effort trying to break free from your negative behaviours.

Stop judging yourself

You’ve probably already tried telling yourself to just stop with the bad habits and do better in future. Unfortunately, berating yourself only leads to a negative self-image and self-doubt. This kind of negative thinking can become a bad habit in itself.

Thinking about your own faults isn’t much fun. You may have noticed that when you try to break a bad habit, your mind comes up with all kinds of justifications as to why you should carry on doing the same old thing. Habits make you feel comfortable, remember? It’s hard to give that up. Moreover, if you’ve been engaging in the same old habits for months or even years, they will be firmly entrenched. This makes them hard to shift.

For example, let’s say that you want to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink each week. One of your bad habits is to have a large glass of wine every night just before you sit down for dinner. You could try scolding yourself, reading up on the dangers of drinking too much, and telling yourself sternly that you are “going to stop this week.”

Unfortunately, the most likely outcome in this situation is that you will feel uncomfortable at the prospect of giving up your bad habit, and possibly guilty or ashamed of having the problem in the first place. So how do you deal with these feelings? By carrying on drinking, of course!

Change your focus

You need to take a new approach. Instead of beating yourself up, it’s time to think about developing behaviors that can provide you with a sense of comfort without damaging your physical or psychological health. If you know that your new habits will help you feel better, you will be motivated to start them! This is much easier than trying to break a bad habit.

When identifying your bad habits and adopting new, positive behaviors, you need to think like a detective or scientist. Take a step back and look at the situation from an objective point of view. If this is difficult for you, pretend that you are trying to help someone else. This can provide you with a clearer perspective.

First, think about the root causes of your bad habit. Why did it start, and what triggers keep it going? For instance, if you have fallen into the habit of eating high-fat microwave dinners after work, this may be because you went through a busy time in your life where you didn’t have the energy to cook a healthy meal in the evening. At the time, prepackaged microwave dinners may been an adequate temporary solution.

The next step is to devise new habits that will give you the same level of comfort. Ask yourself how you can make it simple to start putting your new habits in place.

Get into the habit of building better habits

We all know that bad habits are comfortable, but you can change!

Remember, habits become more engrained over time. The more often you repeat an action – whether good or bad – the more likely it is to stick. This also goes for the habit-building habit too.

Once you’ve mastered the art of squeezing out bad habits with more positive behaviours, it will get easier and easier to build the life you want.

  • Women victims of sexual harassment or mistreatment by powerful men in media have begun to band together to form a support network called Press Forward.
  • A rash of powerful men in media have recently been outed for or accused of sexual misconduct with female colleagues.

Women who say they were sexually harassed or mistreated by powerful men in television news have banded together to form a support network aimed at changing a newsroom culture they say has given men a free pass to misbehave for decades.

The women behind the Press Forward initiative tell The Associated Press they want a zero-tolerance policy for sexual misconduct at networks, better awareness of legal rights for women coming into the industry and better accountability for executives to ensure safety and improvements.

“Women should not have to go to work and worry that something like this is going to happen to them,” said Eleanor McManus, who said she was a 21-year-old job seeker when then-ABC News political reporter Mark Halperin tried to kiss her during a meeting in his office. “Women should not worry that mentors may act in an aggressive manner toward them. That’s not fair.”

Press Forward evolved over the last two months after McManus and other women went public with allegations against Halperin, CBS and PBS host Charlie Rose and NBC’s “Today” show host Matt Lauer, and others.

Halperin has said that he is “profoundly sorry for the pain and anguish” he has caused and, in reading the women’s accounts, recognized “conduct for which I feel profound guilt and responsibility.” Rose and Lauer have also offered apologies, while saying some the allegations are untrue. All have been fired.

This was the second wave of an industry-wide reckoning that began at Fox News with the removal last year of Fox News chief Roger Ailes and the dismissal in April of the network’s star host Bill O’Reilly. But the most recent revelations came as many Hollywood and other media executives have faced allegations, and more network women have come forward.

At first, McManus and a small group shared stories and hugs over drinks. They kept in touch via text messages and private Facebook groups, including one called “The Silver Lining.” Now they have reached out to other women with shared experiences to build a growing coalition.

“Nobody here is wallowing in their pain and anger,” said Dianna Goldberg May, a former ABC News researcher who said Halperin demanded she close the door and sit on his lap in his office in the mid-1990s when she was 23. “We are doing something to effect positive change in the workplace.”

The group’s first mission: figuring out what’s needed to make the television news business more equitable and effective. The women say they’ll spend the next six months talking with everyone from interns to executives and designing best practices that tear down the status quo.

After Lauer’s firing, NBC initiated a review of its handling of the matter and implemented in-person training on sexual harassment awareness and appropriate behavior in the workplace.

McManus said some of the networks have already expressed an interest in working with Press Forward.

“There are many reasons to have an industry-wide conversation about how we’re doing and how we’re living up to our norms,” said McManus, a co-founder of the Washington, D.C. public relations firm Trident DMG. “This is, perhaps, the most pressing because this is about the shameful power imbalance that has been in place too long.”

They already have plenty of ideas.

May, now a lawyer, wants the government to give sexual harassment victims more time to file a complaint. Currently, they have up to 300 days.

McManus wants newsrooms to evolve so women at all levels are not afraid to report wrongdoing by a top anchor or producer.

“We stayed silent because we thought we were the only ones,” said McManus. “We didn’t think that this happened to others, and that’s why we stayed silent so long. The cult of silence is finally broken.”

Emily Miller tweeted that Halperin sexually assaulted her while she was a researcher at ABC News. Lara Setrakian was 24 when she says Halperin kissed and touched her while they talked politics in his office.

They said they learned later that some people at the network had been aware of Halperin’s behavior, but that it didn’t stop. Setrakian said Halperin’s treatment of young women was considered an “open secret” in some circles.

“There’s clearly a problem here,” said Setrakian, now the chief executive of the digital media outlet News Deeply. “They should be launching rigorous investigations on how to fix the problem.”

Changing the culture of television news so that men and women are on equal footing — with the same opportunities for advancement — is vital to ensuring its future, Setrakian said. That means not only eliminating the sexual misconduct that has caused scores of women to leave the industry, she said, but getting rid of double standards that judge women on their appearance.

“The current culture is muddling the meritocracy,” Setrakian said. “It’s pushing talented people out. It’s allowing toxic behavior to affect the performance and contribution of certain colleagues. That’s bad for business.”

Marcy McGinnis, who worked her way from secretary to senior vice president at CBS News, said as much as women should be told what resources are available to them if there is an incident, men need to know how to act in the workplace.

“Then we wouldn’t have to train women how to deal with it,” said McGinnis, who now works at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. “Why don’t we go to the source and fix that?”

Trump throws cold water on forming ‘impenetrable Cyber Security unit’ with Russia hours after tweeting about the possibility https://briefnews.eu/trump-throws-cold-water-on-forming-impenetrable-cyber-security-unit-with-russia-hours-after-tweeting-about-the-possibility/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-throws-cold-water-on-forming-impenetrable-cyber-security-unit-with-russia-hours-after-tweeting-about-the-possibility/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2017 05:32:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-throws-cold-water-on-forming-impenetrable-cyber-security-unit-with-russia-hours-after-tweeting-about-the-possibility/ Donald TrumpREUTERS/Yuri Gripas

President Donald Trump suggested on Sunday that he will not pursue a joint cybersecurity task force with Russia, throwing cold water on speculation that sprung from comments he made on Twitter earlier in the day.

“The fact that President Putin and I discussed a Cyber Security unit doesn’t mean I think it can happen. It can’t-but a ceasefire can,& did!” Trump said in a tweet Sunday evening.

The tweet seemed to be an attempt to quell criticism of Trump’s highly publicized meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

After the meeting, conflicting reports emerged over how strongly Trump pressed Putin about Russian interference in the US election and whether Trump accepted Putin’s denials of involvement. Trump then raised eyebrows by revealing on Twitter earlier Sunday that they had discussed forming an “impenetrable Cyber Security unit so that election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded and safe.”

The admission alarmed some politicians, who said it seemed to show Trump trusted Putin’s word over that of senior US intelligence officials. Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida quipped that “partnering with Putin on a ‘Cyber Security Unit’ is akin to partnering with Assad on a ‘Chemical Weapons Unit,'” referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

During their meeting, Trump and Putin also brokered an open-ended cease-fire in southern Syria, earning some praise. However, experts have said that the cease-fire is virtually unenforceable and that no cease-fire during the six-year-old Syrian war has lasted longer than six months.

Army veterans forming human shield to protect NoDAPL protesters at Standing Rock https://briefnews.eu/army-veterans-forming-human-shield-to-protect-nodapl-protesters-at-standing-rock/ https://briefnews.eu/army-veterans-forming-human-shield-to-protect-nodapl-protesters-at-standing-rock/#respond Sun, 12 Feb 2017 00:20:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/army-veterans-forming-human-shield-to-protect-nodapl-protesters-at-standing-rock/

US veterans are returning to Standing Rock to support and protect Native American protesters as the Dakota Access Pipeline continues to meet resistance despite President Trump’s executive order to continue construction of the $ 3.7 billion pipeline.

The veterans are gathering in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, with many on their way.

“We are prepared to put our bodies between Native elders and a privatized military force,” Air Force veteran Elizabeth Williams told the Guardian. “We’ve stood in the face of fire before. We feel a responsibility to use the skills we have.”

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has vowed to fight the president’s order to push ahead with the pipeline despite the US Army Corps of Engineers stating it would cancel its planned environmental impact study and grant a permit for construction of the final phase of the pipeline beneath Lake Oahe to go ahead.

The protest camps are being prepared for flooding that is expected to come as temperatures increase. The veterans’ presence will present a challenge to law enforcement wishing to remove water protectors from the area.

Previous clashes between security officials and protesters have been violent, with police deploying water cannons, rubber bullets and teargas at protesters. Private contractors also set dogs on the demonstrators.

The Veterans Stand group is fundraising for the protesters who continue to resist the pipeline being built by Energy Transfer Partners, and has raised close over $ 220,000 so far. It said the increase in “turmoil and uncertainty” at Standing Rock has inspired them to act.

More than 1,000 veterans came to Standing Rock in December. Whilst there, they apologized to Native Americans for the US government’s treatment of the country’s indigenous people. Veterans Stand doesn’t expect the same veteran presence as before, but it will provide support to the camps through its fundraising.

“The biggest misconception is that Veterans Stand wants to do anything aggressive in response,” Veterans Stand founder Michael Wood Jr told CNN. “People want to do something and they just don’t know what to do. We just want to give people a platform.”

“We’re not coming as fighters, but as protectors,” Jake Pogue, a Marine Corps vet, told the Guardian. “Our role in that situation would be to simply form a barrier between water protectors and the police force and try to take some of that abuse for them.”

“Finally, it’s the US military coming on to Sioux land to help, for the first time in history, instead of coming on to Sioux land to kill natives,” veteran Dan Luker said.
