Forest bathing: It’s more about mental and physical restoration than it is shampoo and rubber duckies. Amanda Ogle dips her toes into this Japanese-born phenomenon.

I’m holding a sprig of cedar and a small note in my hand as I stand at the edge of a dense forest.

The forest, on Oregon’s coast, is where I’m experiencing forest bathing—or shinrin-yoku as it’s known in Japan: The practice of going into the forest in search of mental and physical healing.

Before entering the forest, or “threshold” as my guide, Erin Bowman, calls it, she encourages us to place an offering of some kind—our sprig of cedar, a tiny pinecone, or whatever speaks to us —on the ground. The offering is a gift to nature for letting us enter. I place my cedar sprig neatly on a pile of greenery in front of me, then step into the forest ahead.

Beneath a canopy of Western red cedar and Douglas fir trees, I listen as Erin gives us advice. “As we walk along, feel free to place the note you chose wherever feels like the best spot for it to be,” she says.

I unfold the note given to me before entering the threshold and see that it’s a quote from Japanese monk, Shunryū Suzuki: “If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything, it is open to everything. In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few.”

RELATED: Can going camera-free make you more mindful?

Erin then tells us to think of something we need guidance on, and to ask nature to help us with it. I think of the “beginner’s mind” quote in my hand and the “many possibilities” ahead, and, as I slowly descend into the forest below, my career-driven brain decides to ask nature to help guide me through the world of book publishing.

Shinrin-yoku began in Japan as the practice of immersing oneself in a forest for meditative purposes. The idea is to use one’s senses to smell, touch, listen, and see the forest in a way like never before.

Listening to a gurgling creek below, Erin instructs us to reach out and feel the air getting cooler as we trek down into the forest. I reach my hand out, wiggle my fingers, and sense the cool air shadowed by trees. Although it feels too silly for me to partake, she encourages us to speak to the trees.

Instead, I quiet my thoughts and immerse myself in the woods. I look up above me and, through the filtered light, see tiny pine needles falling like snow. I smile as Erin says this pine needle shower is the forest’s way of welcoming us.

As I cross a wooden bridge over the creek, I reach out and touch a mossy tree trunk, then examine berries while listening to birds call out to each other. When we reach a ridge, Erin asks us all to pick a spot to sit and meditate at for 10 minutes. She gives us ‘forest breathing’ techniques—inhaling for eight seconds, holding for four, then releasing the breath for 10 seconds—and tells us to calm our minds.

Research has shown that forest bathing increases our count of NK cells long after leaving the forest. Other studies have shown forest bathing aids in stress management and lowers blood pressure, boosts the immune system, reduces cortisol (stress hormone), and improves quality of sleep and concentration.

Feeling serene after 10 minutes of meditating, we’re back on the trail examining a giant skunk cabbage and sword ferns when Erin points out a nurse log—a dead, fallen tree trunk that has new trees growing out from the log.

RELATED: Has the internet killed the joy of discovery?

She tells us to think of it as a metaphor, and I ponder how. Is it a metaphor for life after death? Does she mean that something good can stem from something bad?

Brushing my hands along the log, I start feeling more in tune with my surroundings. I ask Erin about her take on connecting with the woods. “We feel a deep sense of connectedness in the forest,” she says. “We can slip into a more primal, fluid state of being and remember that we are just part of the web.”

How Was Your Day … Forest Firefighter? https://briefnews.eu/how-was-your-day-forest-firefighter/ https://briefnews.eu/how-was-your-day-forest-firefighter/#respond Tue, 20 Nov 2018 12:27:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-was-your-day-forest-firefighter/ In this occasional series, OZY takes to streets and neighborhoods across the globe to ask a simple question: “How was your day?”

Tom Rawlings
Libby, Montana

We’ve been out on a fire in southern Oregon. It’s been crazy hot there — 109 in Medford. It’s hot and dry and in fire danger, and that’s why I’m getting paid overtime. After 8 hours, we’re overtime, and when we are on fires, it’s almost double your wage. Our pay is pretty tied to having an active fire season. So yeah … we want to be busy. We want to make a difference.

I’m a helicopter program manager for the U.S. Forest Service, which means I manage two helicopters and 16 firefighters, but I’m also out there with them on the fires. I’m a firefighter, a rappeller. We drop down from the sky to fight forest fires during the fire season. But it’s not like they drop us into the middle of the fire. We look for a very strategic point. I’ll go down with a crew, and we’ll camp out for three or four days.

At 44, I’m the vet out there with the 20-year-olds. I’ve worked all winter to stay in good shape. I live by a pedal-hard-and-coast philosophy. I work hard April to November during fire season, and then in the winter, I do what I want: ski, travel, see family. I look forward to both seasons.

Tom Rawlings poses for a portrait.

I grew up in Idaho and Montana. I got into this business when I was 25 because I was looking for a way to get paid good money to work in the woods. In the western mountains, unless you’re swinging a hammer or slinging coffee, there aren’t a lot of jobs. My dad and his brothers all fought fire in the summers when they were in college. I knew how much firefighters loved doing what they did. I’m not an adrenaline junkie. I just realized I could make a living and live where I wanted to live. This is good work. It keeps me tied in to good people.

We’re wiping sweat and dirt out of our eyes, trying to keep our vision clear. We’re eating 8,000 calories a day just to keep up.

When I hear there’s a fire and I’m going on it, at first I get excited. Then I get all logistical. I want to know everything I can about it. The call comes over the PA, and we hustle to our lockers and put on our fire-resistant clothing, flight suits and harnesses with belly bags with our survival equipment — so that if we rappel into the fire and then the chopper for some reason can’t get to us, we won’t be stranded out there.

Sometimes they drop us right in the middle of thick trees and we descend through branches. Then we hike into the bottom of the fire, which is typically the safest place to approach one because fires go uphill. It wants to spread in all directions, find its fuel, in the white fir, the huge trunks, the downed logs. Our job is to cut a tree line and take away the fuel from the fire. Right next to the fire is most effective. So we get as close as we can stand. Then we just start sawing. Chips are flying and causing flare-ups. It’s hot and loud. Often there are aircraft roaring above, dropping water. And we’re wiping sweat and dirt out of our eyes, constantly trying to keep our vision clear. We’re eating 8,000 calories a day just to keep up and drinking tons of water.

We usually sleep on the ground, no tent or anything. We build a little fire, find some mushrooms or something local and make some gourmet backcountry cuisine. We joke that our job is Extreme Picnicking. It’s a good time to get to know one another and bond. It annoys boyfriends and girlfriends when we get going about firefighting, so our nights around the fire … that’s our chance to be geeks.

Right now we’re at the peak of our fire season. This year has been a barn burner. There are fires everywhere. We’re trying to manage them until the weather changes. But everyone’s out of resources.

Sure, my parents worry. Moms are meant to worry. I have lost friends. In 2007, one of my best friends was killed. The helicopter was in a smoky, low-visibility situation and crashed into a tree. But that didn’t make me want to quit. I’m OK with the risk that comes with my job. We are well-trained. There are times when I’ve felt in over my head, but each day when I am done, I feel gratitude — not only for myself but for my team.

  • The Delta Fire in Northern California scorched nearly 25,000 acres of dry wildland as it raged on for a third day.
  • Fire officials said they were making progress, but there was no containment as of Friday night.
  • This latest fire comes as California struggles to recover from the worst fire in state history. The Mendocino Complex fire took off in late July and burned nearly 460,000 acres.

Firefighters in Northern California struggled to get the upper hand on a three-day-old wildfire that scorched more than 30,000 acres as of Friday evening.

Warm weather and winds amplified the danger as flames moves through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest region.

Is a hot climate or a dry climate key for forest fire risk? https://briefnews.eu/is-a-hot-climate-or-a-dry-climate-key-for-forest-fire-risk/ https://briefnews.eu/is-a-hot-climate-or-a-dry-climate-key-for-forest-fire-risk/#respond Fri, 24 Aug 2018 14:01:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-a-hot-climate-or-a-dry-climate-key-for-forest-fire-risk/

As smoky, apocalyptic-looking skies spread across western North America, researchers are scrambling to improve their predictions of wildfire risk. A changing climate means not just higher temperatures, but also new patterns of rain and snow, which interact in complex ways to contribute to the risk of fire.

A paper in PNAS this week argues that the role of temperature has been exaggerated, while the importance of rainfall has been overlooked. Zachary Holden and a team of collaborators report finding that, out of a range of different factors, longer dry spells were the best predictor of wildfire risks. Other researchers, however, argue that the paper has overlooked previous research and that its results aren’t definitive. Everyone agrees that wildfire risk is set to increase as a result of climate change—but the gritty details are harder to nail down.

Hot, dry, and fiery

This research sits in a strange place between the blindingly obvious and the intensely murky. The contributions of rising temperatures to summer wildfire risk are intuitive: less snow, earlier snowmelt, faster evaporation of water from the environment, hotter and drier vegetation. The role of drought in making things hotter and drier is also clear.

The 27-year-old British number one wants to transform a bungalow in Ashdown Forest into a four-bed home for her parents.

But conservation charity the Woodland Trust has branded the plans “insensitive”, fearing the work will destroy some of the ancient woodland.

The Government’s National Planning Policy Framework says any development involving the destruction of ancient woodland should be refused “unless there are wholly exceptional reasons”.

Jack Taylor from the trust said: “The planning authority should call game, set and match on this insensitive application.

“Miss Konta’s desire for a new house in this location can in no way meet the wholly exceptional test.

“It could be sited anywhere within her grounds rather than being lobbed in the middle of precious habitat and we would urge her to reconsider.”

Ashdown Forest in East Sussex inspired author AA Milne’s Hundred Acre Wood, the setting for lovable bear Pooh’s adventures with Christopher Robin.

Miss Konta’s latest plan is her second attempt to build a house in the grounds of the forest.

A previous application was deemed “significantly detrimental and harmful to the character and appearance of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” and rejected.

This time, an ecological assessment submitted to support Miss Konta’s latest proposal claims no trees would be felled and the land is “poor-quality habitat designated ancient woodland site”.

But the Woodland Trust says the forest is home to “one of the most dynamic and wildlife-rich ecosystems in the UK”.

Mr Taylor said: “Given the previous refusal for development on this site, it’s hard to under stand why Miss Konta seems intent on destroying this precious habitat.”

Protection for ancient woodland, defined as land that has been continuously wooded since 1600, was strengthened last month.

A spokesman for Miss Konta, who is competing in the Rogers Cup in Montreal this week, declined to comment.

A spokesman for planning authority Wealden council said: “No decision has been made.

“It’s being looked at and we are getting consultee responses.”

Spain holidays warning: Forest fires devastating popular tourist island of Mallorca https://briefnews.eu/spain-holidays-warning-forest-fires-devastating-popular-tourist-island-of-mallorca/ https://briefnews.eu/spain-holidays-warning-forest-fires-devastating-popular-tourist-island-of-mallorca/#respond Thu, 19 Jul 2018 21:20:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/spain-holidays-warning-forest-fires-devastating-popular-tourist-island-of-mallorca/

Spain holidays to Mallorca have only just been blighted by mini-tsunamis, but now forest fires are threatening the popular tourist island.

The country is currently enduring one of its hottest summers in living memory.

Tourists in Mallorca are now being warned that the forest fires could bring their holidays to a sudden end.

The alarm has been sounded after sixty people had to be evacuated from the town of Pollença in the northern part of the island due to an out-of-control inferno.

A local official told The Sun Online that “a large proportion of the island could go up in flames at any moment.”

Last year 80 fires damaged nearly 170 hectares of land – and authorities fear summer 2018 could be even worse.

As well as Pollença, the other tourist spots at risk are the town of Alcudia  – known for its beaches and Tramuntana – a mountain range which forms the northern backbone of the island, fire officials have said.

A spokesman for the Baleriac Islands’ Ministry of Agriculture told The Sun Online: “In summer, the risk of forest fires in the Mediterranean area is always extreme.

“The fires are becoming more extensive, intense and dangerous.”

Earlier this week Mallorca and Menorca were hit by “mini-tsunamis.”

A number of viral videos have captured the shocking moment popular beach resorts in were hit.

In the videos, water surges from the beaches and flows through the town.

Waves as high as five feet smashed the coast with bars and restaurants being affected.

People watch on as umbrellas and loungers are swept away by the water, and a car attempts to drive through.

The meteotsunamis, also known as meteorological tsunamis, occur when changes in barometric pressure are detected.

This causes the large waves to displace in the water which causes the flooding.

They can be as tall as six feet and despite smaller than regular tsunamis, also cause injuries and deaths.

No-one has been injured in the strong waves to hit the region.

Beaches were also relatively empty at the time as it occurred before tourists flocked to the coast for the day.

The UK Foreign Office has not yet updated its travel advice to the Spanish islands.

On the slopes of northern Ecuador’s Quijo Valley, perpetual clouds shroud the canopy of a seemingly pristine tropical forest. But the beauty of the cloud forest hides a violent, tragic history. A new study of sediments from the valley’s Lake Huila reveals centuries of indigenous agriculture that came to an abrupt end in warfare and fire around 1588.

Population collapse

From about 1400 to 1532, the Quijos Valley marked the eastern frontier of the Incan Empire. Although they were subjects of the empire, the people of the Quijos Valley maintained a distinct cultural identity from the Incas, and historical and archaeological records show that the valley was a conduit for trade between Incan territory and the peoples of the Amazon Basin.

The first Europeans to set foot in the Quijos Valley were Spanish expeditions in 1538 and 1541, who arrived in search of gold and cinnamon. They estimated that about 35,000 indigenous people lived in the region. By 1577, about 11,400 people had clustered around the Spanish town of Baeza, which the colonizers built in 1559 alongside the indigenous community of Hatunquijos. But by 1600, three out of four of these people were dead.

Coconino National Forest

Earlier this week, a 16-inch-by-16-inch, battery-operated hobby drone crashed in Arizona’s Coconino National Forest, several miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona. The drone caught fire when it crashed, igniting a grassland area called Kendrick Park. The Kendrick fire spread more than 300 acres, but it was contained by 30 firefighters within the day.

Coconino National Forest spokesperson George Jozens told Ars on Friday that it was unclear what kind of drone caused the crash, but the pilot had been identified and was charged with starting a wildfire by Forest Services Region 3 Law Enforcement. Ars contacted that department for comment, but we have not yet received a response. Penalties for starting a wildfire can range from fines to community service to jail time.

Forest Bathing: THIS Japanese tradition has arrived in the UK – would you try it? https://briefnews.eu/forest-bathing-this-japanese-tradition-has-arrived-in-the-uk-would-you-try-it/ https://briefnews.eu/forest-bathing-this-japanese-tradition-has-arrived-in-the-uk-would-you-try-it/#respond Fri, 02 Mar 2018 05:02:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/forest-bathing-this-japanese-tradition-has-arrived-in-the-uk-would-you-try-it/

Developed in Japan during the 1980’s, forest bathing has become an integral part of Japanese culture.

Although the Japanese term ‘Shinrin-yoku’ translates to ‘forest bathing’, the practice is probably not what you think.

Similar to other forms of mediation, the idea is to spend time walking through forests, soaking up the atmosphere.

The idea is simple, spend time in a forest and you’ll feel calm, rejuvenated and restored – well supposedly.

On the contrary to how it sounds, this tradition does not involve taking off your clothes to lie naked in the forest – although it is probably no coincidence that nudist communities congregate in woods.

Guided groups and forest bathing leaders take people into the forest to walk, sit or meditate under the trees and, as a form, is now regarded as an important aspect of healthcare and healing.

It is even now recognised by health care professionals who prescribe this form of relaxation a remedy for stress and fatigue.

Further research into the practice has shown spending time in a wooded area has an overall positive effect.

Dr. Saima Latif, Psychologist at Psychology Direct said: “Spending time in a forest, boosts the immune system functioning, reduces blood pressure, reduces stress improves the mood and ability to focus, increases energy levels and sleep, allows deeper and clearer intuition, an increased flow of energy and an overall increased sense of happiness.”

Forest Therapy Guide at Forest Holidays, Charlie Houlder-Moat, goes on to add: “Forest Bathing is a natural wellbeing therapy that utilises the healing power of the forest. Just being in a forest can help to reduce anxiety and boost the immune system”.

Japan is home to a number of sacred forests, including the beautiful forest of Nagi on Mount Mikasa which was awarded World Heritage status in 1998.

However, forest bathing is no longer restricted to Japan. According to Forrest Holidays, the Google searches for the practice in the UK has risen by 247 per cent.

Britons across the country can now also join the wellness craze.

Forest Holidays run guided tours in Hampshire and Norfolk and according to the National Trust, Horner Wood in Devon is a beautiful spot to be at one with the trees.

For the more adventurous, Canopy and Stars have highlighted forest camping spots in Cornwall and Wales, and the RSBP are looking to bring the practice to the Sandwell Valley reserve near Birmingham.

In a comment with the BBC, Samantha Lyster from the RSBP said: “It’s an urban reserve which is densely populated by trees, so it’d be an ideal place to trial it.”
