For the first time, the broader public appear to have backed a second referendum, with 44 percent of people calling for a vote on Prime Minister Theresa May’s final agreement with the EU. The research, conducted by anti-Brexit group Best for Britain, also said that 36 percent reject the idea of a second referendum – a good eight points behind.
The only reasonable scenario for a second referendum to be called would be if MPs reject May’s deal with the EU – but such a disagreement would spell crisis and constitutional turmoil for the UK. The group is using the research to call on MPs to respond to the people’s growing desire for a “final say.”
Best for Britain chief executive Eloise Todd said voters should have the chance to choose between a non-EU future or life within the bloc, once May has hammered out a deal.
“Now there is a decisive majority in favor of a final say for the people of our country on the terms of Brexit. This poll is a turning point moment,” she said.
“The only democratic way to finish this process is to make sure the people of this country – not MPs across Europe – have the final say, giving them an informed choice on the two options available to them: the deal the government brings back and our current terms.
“We now need MPs across Parliament, from [Labour leader Jeremy] Corbyn’s front bench to the moderates of the Conservative Party, to do what’s best for Britain and back a people’s vote on the terms.”
Former Prime Ministers Sir John Major and Tony Blair have been vocal in calling for another referendum, but the Liberal Democrats and the Greens are the only parties in favor of another vote.
Best for Britain said its poll of 813 people indicated that just shy of a quarter of people who voted Leave in the last referendum want another say on the final terms of the Brexit agreement.
Meanwhile, the European Union seems to have accepted that Britain will not change its mind on Brexit following the March 2019 divorce deadline. Ireland’s EU commissioner in Brussels, Phil Hogan, said Monday that EU leaders do not expect any substantive change in the UK’s position before March 2019, even if there is a vote on the Brexit deal in Parliament before then.
“One thing we have already learned from Brexit is that the UK does not have a better idea,” Hogan said. “It does not have a replacement for the union as a way to improve the life quality of its citizens, its businesses and its standing in the world.
“Stepping into global Britain is stepping into a difficult world,” he added. “And there will be a huge gap between hope and experience. One hopes that [Theresa] May’s confidence is not misplaced.”
He also said that the UK’s post-EU landscape will mean that Britons will regain their sovereignty but will have “reduced bargaining power, reduced security of its markets and supply chains,” as well as friction and cost added to trade in Europe.

The UK will battle more snow showers and strong winds today, with some of the heaviest snowfall in the north-east of the country, according to BBC Breakfast.
Meteorologist Carol Kirkwood explained: “This morning it’s a bitterly cold start to the day, some of us won’t see much snow but some of us will see a lot.
“The Met Office has issued an amber warning in areas where we could have 10 to 15 centimetres of snow falling.”
However, the weather will be mainly dry in the south east, although some sunny spells and bitterly cold easterly winds are predicted.
The snow has already caused major disruption for some areas in Britain and it set to continue this morning.
It is expected to be particularly bad on the eastern side of the UK as heavy snow is likely to cause travel disruptions.
In the last few days an icy air from Siberia has swept the UK, this has been dubbed by some as the “Beast from the East”.
This morning heavy snow showers will push through the north east of England and eastern Scotland.
An amber warning has been enforced for the north east of the UK as between five and 15 centimetres of snow is predicted.
As a result there will be a lot of disruption to travel across parts of Scotland and the north-east of England.
Meanwhile, the south is likely to have very little snowfall as it is expected to ease up throughout the day.
Overall it will be severely cold today, with some places barely reaching above freezing. Temperatures will range between minus five and minus 10.
On Thursday Storm Emma is going to hit the UK, bringing with it more heavy, disruptive snow that could affect southern counties in England and south Wales.
Further north there will be frequent snowfall, particularly across central and eastern Scotland as well as Northern Ireland.
A new amber warning is likely to be issued in the south for disruption and problematic conditions.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
BBC Weather has reported the UK will be hit by snow next week, despite temperatures rising through this week.
Winter isn’t over just yet for Britain as snow will cover some ground after a frost over the weekend.
Matt Taylor presented the weather this morning on BBC Breakfast.
Louise Minchin introduced him, saying: “It’s going to be icy in the next few days.”
Matt said: “Yes, winter returns to us all by the end of the weekend and into next week.
“There’s a bit more of a breeze blowing today over yesterday – so temperatures are not quite as high. But still, Glasgow, Belfast are 10C – Cardiff up to an unseasonably warm 12C.
“As we go through into tonight, the cloud across eastern counties of England will drift its way westwards. We’ve got a NE wind developing by this stage.
“That, as it drifts through the midlands, will keep temperatures up in that strip but either side of it with clear skies – the blue colours indicating areas most likely to see a frost. And that will take us through to tomorrow evening.”
He explained the wind strength over the weekend will make temperatures feel colder.
“That’s because a big area of high pressure is setting up stall across Scandinavia. Winds going clockwise around it will bring very cold air off the continent toward us.
“A chilly wind will develop almost UK-wide but actually for the weekend dry weather is dominating with sunny weather and an overnight frost.
“It’s as we go into next week we will feel the real bitter chill of the winter as temperatures drop further – and some parts will see snow. Difficult to say where at this stage and difficult to say how cold…
“Big jacket is back, winter has not gone yet.”
UK weather models this morning confirmed a possibly historic big freeze is about to grip the nation.
Daytime temperatures will struggle to get much above freezing through the weekend and into the start of March.
“Sounds ominous doesn’t it,” Louise said to her co-host Dan Walker.
Health experts have warned vulnerable people to take extra care with extreme cold weather likely to worsen some health conditions.

SAN FRANCISCO—Less than a week before a contentious trade secrets trial is set to begin, lawyers from Waymo and Uber squared off one final time in court on Tuesday morning.
US District Judge William Alsup told Waymo that its lawyers could not present projected financial figures for the self-driving car market, lest they influence the jury improperly. Rather, he wants the case to remain focused on the eight specific trade secrets at issue.
“So if we put big numbers out there, there’s a risk that the jury will fall for the big numbers,” he said, comparing it to patent cases. Such a ruling is potentially a large win for Uber if the company is ultimately found liable in the case.

(Reuters) – Lockheed Martin Corp reported fourth-quarter revenue on Monday that beat Wall Street estimates, helped by higher sales from the F-35 fighter jet program, while also forecasting a rise in earnings in 2018.
Shares of the U.S. defense contractor rose 2.4 percent to $ 353.15 in premarket trading.
The U.S. defense contractor took a $ 1.9 billion charge in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, mainly due to the change in U.S. tax law.
Excluding a deferred non-cash gain of $ 122 million or 43 cents per share, and the tax charges, Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S calculations showed Lockheed earned $ 3.87 per share versus analysts estimate of $ 4.07 per share.
Lockheed gave an adjusted figure for earnings from continuing operations of $ 4.30 per share.
Net sales rose to $ 15.14 billion from $ 13.75 billion a year earlier, beating Wall Street estimates of $ 14.72 billion.
Adjusted for new accounting standards from Jan. 1, Lockheed said it expects 2018 net sales in the range of $ 50.00 billion-$ 51.50 billion and earnings per share of $ 15.20-$ 15.50.
Lockheed, like its peers in the United States, is expected to gain from an increase in defense spending under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The U.S. Defense Department expects to spend some $ 391 billion over 15 years to develop and buy 2,456 of the supersonic warplanes.
Lockheed said sales in its aeronautics business, its biggest, grew 11.8 percent to $ 6.05 billion.

Ladies and gentlemen, Nashville‘s Deacon Claybourne is officially back on the market.
And in tonight’s episode (CMT, 9/8c), the Highway 65 chief goes on his first date since Rayna’s death last season — an occasion for mixed feelings, star Charles Esten says, if ever there were one.
“It’s a horrifically hard position he’s in right now,” Esten says during a stop at TVLine’s New York offices,”mourning this woman that you thought you would be with the rest of your life. And then you meet somebody else that had every quality or attribute that you might look for in somebody —but you’re not looking for somebody.”
That “somebody,” of course, is Kaitlin Doubleday’s Jessie, with whom Deacon had a slightly flirty friendship — which paused on a rather ambiguous note — at the end of Season 5.
“They’re both in a place where love is not the first priority, and neither one of them is looking,” he says. “I thought that was great, the way we dealt with that last season and the way we made that clear, because once that was clear, then the friendship was allowed to grow.”
But just because Deke has gotten to a place where he’s ready-ish to give romance another shot doesn’t mean that everyone in his family is on board with the plan, as evidenced by Daphne’s tearful confession in the Season 6 trailer: “I want him to be happy,” she tells sister Maddie, “but I hate this.” Esten acknowledges that unlike the emancipated and nearly adult Maddie, Rayna’s younger daughter is “still right there, she’s still going to school, she’s still right in it” and therefore has even less reprieve from the notion of her stepdad moving on. “I think she’s the voice of a lot of viewers,” he adds. “I get that. We all get that, that she’s like, ‘No. This is not how I want him happy.’ I don’t know if there was intentionality behind that or not, but it serves a purpose.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Juliette gets even deeper into the self-help group she learned about in the premiere. When we bring up the potential problems in Highway 65’s biggest artist joining what seems a lot like a cult, Esten says Deacon’s not overly concerned. (At least, not yet.)
“He starts off, not downplaying it, but going, ‘This is Juliette. This can happen. If you find something that works, as a guy that has been through it, you get a little gung-ho in the moment. It’ll wear off, you know, how things do,’” he says. “So it starts off with [Deacon] being not just the label head, but the friend.”

The TV ad industry is one of the largest ad segments in the US — and it’s ripe for digital disruption. The first TV commercial aired in the US in 1941, and it featured an ad for Bulova watches during a Brooklyn Dodgers baseball game.
While there have been advancements in TV ad buying since Bulova’s commercial, the audiences that TV commercials target are still based on broad demographic data, like age and gender, and are aimed at maximizing reach. Although TV ads remain highly effective, targeting can be greatly improved by introducing more digital data into the mix.
Digital display advertising was disrupted by programmatic technologies because of the operational efficiencies gained from automating manual processes. But TV is a completely different animal. The TV advertising space is entrenched in traditional processes that largely depend on direct negotiations between ad buyers and sellers. By incorporating more data, TV advertisers can fine-tune their targeting beyond broad consumer groups, and potentially see higher returns on their ad spend.
But the way consumers watch TV content is changing, and data collection is getting more expansive. Disrupting an ad industry with a history spanning over eight decades will be a significant hurdle for programmatic TV (PTV) adoption.
A new report by BI Intelligence explores the drivers of programmatic TV adoption and the value advertisers and TV companies can derive from hyper-targeted audiences. It also highlights the key differences and similarities between programmatic TV and digital display, and assesses several potential barriers to PTV adoption.
Here are some of the key takeaways from the report:
