Goldman Sachs has cut its year-end target for the S&P 500, predicting the benchmark US stock index will fall 4.2% as the Federal Reserve sticks to its aggressive tightening.
The Wall Street bank dropped the benchmark's three-month target from 4,300 to 3,600, and warned that the US central bank's fast pace of interest rate hikes will likely lead to further stock selloffs before the end of 2022.
"The expected path of interest rates is now higher than we previously assumed, which tilts the distribution of equity market outcomes below our prior forecast," the bank's strategists said in a note to clients Thursday.
"The S&P 500 index actually reached our previous year-end target of 4,300 in mid-August, but the rate complex has subsequently shifted dramatically," added the team, led by chief US equity strategist David Kostin.
US stocks slipped after the Fed on Wednesday hiked interest rates by an outsized 75 basis points for the third time in a row. The S&P 500 closed 0.84% lower at 3,757.99 on Thursday, after hitting a two-month low of 3,749.35 during that session.
Investors have fretted about the interest rate hikes because of their potential impact on economic growth.
The Goldman Sachs team warned the S&P 500 could fall as low as 3,400 if earnings of its listed companies decline and the Fed's attempts to curb red-hot inflation lead to a "hard landing", where the US suffers a recession.
"The outlook is unusually murky. The forward paths of inflation, economic growth, interest rates, earnings, and valuations are all in flux more than usual, with a wider distribution of potential outcomes," they said.
But in the near term, Goldman Sachs expects investors will turn their focus to corporate earnings. In the third-quarter earnings season, record-high profit margins will be closely examined, its team said.
Stock investors have come round to the view that a hard landing for the US economy is inevitable, Goldman Sachs said, based on discussions with clients.
"Most portfolio managers believe that in order to corral inflation, the Fed will have to hike rates sufficiently high that it will result in a US recession at some point during 2023," Kostin's team said.
The bank's strategists said its higher interest rate scenario implies the S&P 500 will still be at 3,600 in six months, but should rise 6% to 4,000 in 12 months.
Goldman Sachs expects another 75 basis point hike at the Fed's November meeting, followed by a 50 basis point rise in December. A hike of 25 basis points in February means policymakers are aiming to raise interest rates to between 4.5% and 4.75%.

Goldman Sachs raised its forecasts for interest rate increases at the Federal Reserve's next two meetings as monetary policy makers have been asserting the view that more rate hikes are needed to bring down inflation.
The investment bank now expects the Federal Open Market Committee to raise the Fed Funds target by 75 basis points in September and by 50 basis points in November. It previously projected increases of 50 and 25 basis points, respectively.
"[Fed] officials have sounded hawkish recently and have seemed to imply that progress toward taming inflation has not been as uniform or as rapid as they would like," Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius said in a late Wednesday note.
He also outpointed a Wednesday report by The Wall Street Journal that said the Fed appears to be on a path to raise interest rates 75 basis points this month following Chairman Jerome Powell's pledge to reduce inflation even if it increases unemployment.
The WSJ report is "a likely hint from the Fed leadership" that a three-quarter-point percentage increase will take place at the September 20-21 meeting, said Hatzius, adding that hawkishness is overriding the case for slowing the pace of tightening that Powell outlined at the July meeting.
Goldman expects another rate hike in December, 25 basis points, which would bring the Fed Funds rate to a range of 3.75% to 4% by the end of 2022. The Fed has already raised interest rates four times, to a range of 2.25% to 2.5%. The Fed raised its key rate by 75 basis points at its past two meetings.
Powell reiterated his anti-inflation message on Thursday at the Cato Institute's 40th Annual Monetary Conference. "I can assure you that my colleagues and I are strongly committed to this project and we will keep at it until the job is done," Powell said, according to CNBC.
Fed Vice Chair Lael Brainard has also been among the Fed's hawkish voices. "We are in this for as long as it takes to get inflation down," she said in a speech in New York on Wednesday. Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester also spoke on Wednesday. "I'm not even convinced that inflation's peaked yet," she reportedly said on a Market News International webcast.
Now pricing in a rate hike path of 75-50-25 points for the next three meetings, Goldman Sachs also said its own financial conditions index has tightened on the hawkish shift in expectations.
"This should be enough to keep growth on a solidly below-potential path in the second half of 2022. How the drag from tighter financial conditions will net out with other key growth impulses in 2023 is more uncertain, and we could imagine the hiking cycle extending beyond this year," said Hatzius.

Laura, 38, was on hand to present the weather from Stroud for the last Good Morning Britain instalment of the week. The forecaster took herself off to a hillside, overlooking beautiful countryside scenery as the sun rose on what could be one of the hottest UK days on record. However, what she and her ITV co-stars Ranvir Singh, 42, and Adil Ray, 46, didn’t expect was a herd of cows to interrupt the report.
The studio presenters handed the reins over to Laura but as they did, she was nowhere to be seen, instead, the camera was firmly focussed on the intruders.
“What’s happening?” the meteorologist could be heard saying to her cameraman, to which Ranvir asked: “Laura, how far away are you parked?
“Can you make a run for it if you need to?” the host continued before the weather reporter replied: “We can’t – we’re parked right through that part.”
“There’s quite a lot of them,” she added, to which Adil remarked: “There’s quite a lot of them,” with the camera panning to show the entire herd right next to the crew.
“They’re planning something, they’re boxing you in. This will be interesting,” the Ackley Bridge star joked.

“Did we fill out a health and safety form before you went up there, Laura?” Ranvir asked in a jokey tone.
“We’re trying to keep our social distancing but we’re also trying to huddle together – it’s like a herd mentality,” Laura replied.
“Well, good luck this morning Laura that’s all we can say – we’ve loved working with you,” the political reporter quipped.
Adil offered some further reassurance, telling the forecaster: “I’m sure you’ll be absolutely fine. Look after yourselves and we’ll be back with you soon.”
“They’re all looking at us,” the forecaster continued, to which Adil added: “I did see one of the cameras move and wondered, ‘Was that one of the cows?’”
Taking to Twitter, those watching at home commented on the intruders, as one wrote: “Brilliant. Laura, you have the best job in the world.”
Another added on the social media platform in hope to warn the forecaster: “Watch out for bulls, Laura!!”
Despite the mayhem caused by the unexpected guests, Laura still managed to tell viewers what they could expect as the nation is gripped by a heatwave over the next few days.
The meteorologist explained the north is likely to see temperatures hit the high-20s from today and will remain until next Thursday.
Thunderstorms are expected by Tuesday as the warm weather clashes with a colder front as temperatures begin to dip slightly.
For England and Wales, Friday will see highs of 37 degrees and they will drop to the mid-20s by next Wednesday.
Again, storms are forecast as the weather fronts clash and viewers were warned to take extra care when enjoying the sunshine.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
Forecasters expect a band of patchy mist and fog to smother areas in the south and east of the UK.
Southern England and east Wales will bear the brunt of the bad weather during the early hours of Thursday.
Meanwhile, a covering of cloud strikes the far north, resulting in an outbreak of rain across Northern Ireland.
It is going to be a little bit hazy across some northern parts of the UK this Valentine’s Day, with visibility less than 100 metres.
Meteorologist Carol Kirkwood reported the BBC Breakfast weather forecast live from the London Coliseum today.
She told viewers: “I can tell you it is pretty nippy up here and it’s not just cold in London. It’s cold across many parts of England and so Wales this morning.
“So if you’re heading out you might encounter some frost and the other thing to watch out for this morning is some dense fog.”
Despite the unpleasant conditions in parts of the UK today, Thursday is set to be a day brimming with sunshine and clear skies.
The more direct the sunshine is the bluer skies, with warmest conditions across England and Wales.
Temperatures to reach 14 degrees Celsius in some places and it is possible the heat value could hit 15 degrees Celsius around the Moray Firth.
Nearby weather fronts will be kept at bay by an area of high pressure sitting to the south east of the UK.
The southwesterly breeze continues today and into Friday, though they will be lighter.
Britons can look forward to more sunshine tomorrow, although there will be some mist and fog first thing.
But there will be a change in weather, particularly in the northwest of the UK, where cloud and rain will arrive.
Given the UK has achieved above-average temperatures for this season it is unsurprising bookmaker Coral predicts this Valentine’s Day to be the hottest ever.
Coral make it just 6-4 (from 4-1) February 14 goes down in history as the warmest ever. The record for the hottest Feast of Saint Valentine currently stands at 19.1C.
“It’s going to be one of the hottest Valentine’s Day that we have ever seen in the UK,” Coral’s spokesman Harry Aitkenhead said.
“[There are] mild temperatures up and down the country thanks to a warm front coming in from the Azores.”
He continued: “We’ve slashed our odds this week on Thursday breaking the record and all eyes will be on the thermometers as Valentine’s Day heats up, with it a real possibility.”
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
A fierce weather system is heading towards the UK from the north west and will result in the cloud thickening in Scotland and Northern Ireland today.
Carol Kirkwood, who presented the BBC Breakfast weather report this morning, told viewers there would be a lot of cloud around during the early hours of the day.
She said: “We do have a lot of cloud first thing this morning, especially across the central sway of the UK.
“As we go through this week, while it’s going to be cold, by Friday temperatures will recover temporarily before going down hill.”
Today, the winds will pick up around the Western Isles and gusts could move as fast as 60mph.
When the rain arrives it will turn more persistent and heavy through Northern Ireland and western Scotland by the afternoon.
There may also be some hill snow in Scotland, however, much of England and Wales will remain dry and bright.
In fact, forecasters expect it to be quite sunny in Kent this afternoon and temperatures across the UK will range between four and eight degrees Celsius.
For most Britons Monday is going to be a rather frosty day and it may be hazy too in some places due to dense cloud.
As a weather system sweeps the south of the UK this evening it will feel brisk when the winds gain momentum.
What’s more, hill snow is predicted in parts of Scotland and the Pennines, while the white stuff may come out in bursts on lower ground.
Overnight and into Tuesday morning, the heat value will tumble as the winds continue to tear through the UK.
The freezing weather this January has forced leading bookmaker Coral top slash odds on this month being the coldest January on record.
Now, Coral has put odds on at 1-2 from 4-5 this month goes down as the chilliest January in UK history.
Also, the firm is offering odds of 1-10 that there is snow in any major city in the UK by the end of this week.
While it is now 4-5 chance snow will fall in London this week, as the UK is set for the longest cold spell in six years.
“It looks like we are set for one of the coldest spells of weather in six years,” said Coral’s spokesman John Hill.
“Therefore the odds have been slashed on this month ending as the coldest January on record in the UK.”
He added: “Some parts of the country have already seen snow this month and the betting suggests it will fall again next week, with London odds-on to see the white stuff.”
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
Britons will have to bare the bitterly cold weather for some time as temperatures plummet across the UK.
In some regions, the heat value is expected to fall to a staggering -10 degrees Celsius following the arrival of Arctic air.
Also, there is going to be some sleet and snow over the hills, as well as a few outbreaks of rain and grey clouds.
Meteorologist Matt Terry issued an ice warning on BBC Breakfast after explaining how temperatures had drastically fallen.
He said: “A few showers overnight means icy conditions down coastal counties of England. Bright start to the east but lost of cloud in the west.”
This morning there is widespread frost in Scotland and England, with temperatures down to minus seven degrees Celsius.
Elsewhere, there will be some icy patches following the early showers on Friday morning.
Today, a band of cloud travelling across Northern Ireland and into western parts of England, Wales and Scotland is expected to bring more rain, sleet and snow.
Areas likely to be most affected by the troublesome trio includes Cumbria, the higher ground in Wales, the Pennines and the Southern Uplands.
Rain, sleet and snow could also affect lower grounds, as well as The Midlands and the West Country.
It is coldest today in the east where this afternoon temperatures could range between three and five degrees.
In the south and west temperatures are slightly higher, with figures ranging between six and nine degrees Celsius.
Friday is not going to be as sunny as Thursday, but the northerly winds will have calmed down.
As temperatures nosedive, leading bookmaker Coral has put odds on this month being the coldest on record at 5-4.
Also, the firm are offering odds on the capital city to get snow this week as the heat value plunges across the UK.
Coral make is a 4-6 chance snow falls in London by the end of the weekend.
“Winter really has arrived now and most parts of the UK are going to find no escape from the minus temperatures over the next week or so,” Coral’s spokesman Harry Aitkenhead said.
“With snow sweeping down the country too there’s every chance that this January will go down as the coldest on record, and our odds show that possibility is very much alive.”
Having seen forecasters predicting an extension of cold weather, the bookies also make it odds on at 4-5 this winter goes down as the coldest on record.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
Carol Kirkwood delivered the BBC Breakfast weather forecast this morning and warned temperatures would get much colder as the week progresses.
She added there was a yellow weather warning from the Met Office due to strong wings in Scotland and north of England.
Carol told viewers: “This morning it isn’t a particularly cold start to the morning for this time of year.
“But what you will find is increasingly it will turn windier the further north you travel and there is some rain in the forecast.”
She continued: “We have a couple of weather fronts, they’re moving south, bringing rain as they wrap around this area of low pressure, more rain across the north west of Scotland.
“The strongest winds will be the further north you travel the met office has a yellow weather warning in force for parts of Teeside, Fife, the highlands and northern and western isles.”
Carol added the strong winds could lead to “some big waves” in coastal areas.
She continued: “Those gusts could lead to some travel disruption and could be damaging particularly in the far north.”
However, while the day will start of fairly windy, she assured viewers it will “brighten up across northern Ireland, Scotland and England later in the day”.
Carol went on to note temperatures overnight will get colder.
“Overnight, still a fair bit of cloud around, more breaks in the sky so temperatures will be that bit lower than the night just gone but for the time of year, not too bad,” she explained.
“We are clinging on to some milder conditions by the skin of our teeth out towards the west but through the course of the early part of the morning it is still going to feel cold.
“Tomorrow promises to be a sunnier day than today, it will still be note windy but not as windy as today or tonight.”
Carol added temperatures tomorrow will be between five and nine degrees Celsius.
Looking towards the rest of the week, she said Wednesday will have a “frosty start”.
But she concluded: “Still bright days ahead, still a fair bit of cloud coming in with the wind and feeling cold.”
Meanwhile, bookmakers have slashed the odds of this winder to be the coldest on record.
Coral have revealed they have cut odds to just 1/2, with John Hill commenting: “The odds are falling all the time for this to end as the coldest winter on record in the UK and with the outlook all pointing to freezing temperatures over the next couple of weeks.
“We could also be set for the coldest January since records began.”

Britons have been warned another area of low pressure will strike the UK tomorrow, bringing with it an abundance of unsettled weather.
Commuters could see their travel disrupted as winds may reach a whopping 80mph in some areas and most will be battered by the rain.
The worst of the wet weather possibly in north Scotland and Northern Ireland, where the gales could be at its highest.
Today, more places in the north will feel milder due to an area of low pressure spreading across the UK.
However, the weather system swooping the nation is going to be combined by blustery winds and wintry showers.
Carol Kirkwood presented the BBC Breakfast weather forecast live from Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, where she told viewers today would be windy.
She reported: “The forecast for today is a blustery one, we’ve also got some showers and that is after the rain we have in the west moves east and eventually clears away.”
Overnight the low pressure system approached the UK from the west, before landing in Scotland, where the winds will be prominent today.
Although, the gales are relatively low this morning the gusts will be higher, particularly in Scotland.
In the early hours of the day, rain is going to affect Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, The Midlands and East Anglia.
But the showers may push into Wales and the south west quite early on, before sweeping eastwards during the day.
By the afternoon, however, the downpours do turn heavier for northern England, Wales and the south-west.
Thursday is slightly warmer than yesterday, with temperatures ranging between nine and 14 Celsius in the UK.
Compared to Wednesday it will a lot hotter in the far north – perhaps eight degrees up from yesterday in some places.
Through Thursday evening and into Friday another area of low pressure is going to hit the UK, meaning a second spell of very wet weather.
Also, gusts could be higher than 60 or 70mph in Northern Ireland. If that is the case there could be some disruptions in the area.
With freezing conditions expected to hit the UK in the coming weeks, Coral now make it 10-11 chance (from 5-4) this winter is the coldest on record.
Meanwhile, it’s also odds on at 10-11, with the bookies, for any part of the UK to see snowfall on Christmas Day.
Ladbrokes spokesperson Alex Apati said: “It’s looking more likely than ever that this winter breaks records, with a white Christmas being just as likely.”
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
A white Christmas looks more likely than not this year as snow sweeps the Southern Uplands and the Scottish Highlands this morning.
In the north it will be particularly frosty, as patches of freezing fog were highlighted in satellite footage shared on BBC Breakfast.
Also, there is the risk of ice on untreated surfaces, although Wednesday should be milder than previous days.
The milder conditions are down to cloud coming off the Atlantic, which is bringing with it lighter air.
But when the cloud meets the cold air there is going to be a touch of wintriness over the hills of Wales, northern England and parts of Scotland.
Weather reporter Carol Kirkwood told BBC viewers: “Today, what we have are two weather fronts, one heading northeastwards and one heading from the west towards the east.
“All of them are bringing some rain and on higher ground we’ll also see some snow from that too.”
Temperatures in the north first thing this morning are quite low, with the heat value ranging between minus two and four Celsius.
Meanwhile, in the south temperatures are a lot higher and could even reach 12 degrees in places such as Plymouth and St. Helier.
For most Britons Wednesday will be a largely wet affair, however the heaviest downpours are going to move eastward this afternoon.
As a result, late bright spells are likely, especially in the south-east quarter of the UK, where the heat figure could top 13 Celsius.
Areas with the best sunshine include Norwich, London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Plymouth and St Helier.
On Thursday, however, another Atlantic weather system will move into the UK, meaning more rain for much of the country.
Yet conditions are expected to remain mild tomorrow across the board and not just in the southern half of the UK.
However, a yellow wind warning has been issued by the Met Office for Friday due to strong winds, which may cause disruptions.
Areas at risk of flying debris, damages to building and danger to life include north-east England, north-west England’, Northern Ireland, south-west Scotland and Wales.
With snowfall in Scotland this week, leading bookmaker Coral have put odds on it being a white Christmas this year.
The firm is offering bets at 1-2 for snow to fall on Christmas Day in the UK and also have evens for this winter to be coldest in UK history.
“Temperatures are set to drop sharply this week, therefore, we are likely to see some early snow, which gives hope to those dreaming of a White Christmas,” said Coral spokesman’s John Hill.
